Dave Roberts Admits He Feared Yankees Returning to L.A. for World Series Game 6

The Los Angeles Dodgers closed out a five-game World Series against the New York Yankees in the Bronx, staging a dramatic comeback in Game 5 to clinch the franchise's eighth championship.

During a Monday appearance on Mookie Betts's podcast, manager Dave Roberts admitted that he's relieved the series didn't shift back to Los Angeles for a Game 6.

Elaborating, Roberts said that he was afraid of the pressure the Dodgers would face if tasked with having to avoid potentially blowing a 3–0 series lead. Roberts, who was part of the Boston Red Sox team that staged a 3–0 comeback in the ALCS against the Yankees in 2004, made it clear he was hoping to avoid ending up on the wrong side of history.

"When you're down 3–0, you're at the point where you have nothing to lose now… When you're down 3–0 everyone is expecting you to lose anyway. So now, that, for me, is freeing. And they played free, won Game 4. And I will tell you this now, publicly, I was so afraid to come back to Los Angeles for Game 6," said Roberts, when asked if he managed Game 5 with more urgency than usual.

"If we were to come back, the noise, the pressure becomes real. Because then, you're going to start potentially being part of history in the wrong way."

Roberts's urgency in Game 5 paid off, as a disastrous series of Yankees defensive miscues gave life to the Dodgers' comeback. They managed to secure the World Series win on the road, much to the relief of their manager.

Howe can fix Gordon blow by unleashing Newcastle "monster" in new position

Newcastle United’s win over Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League on Wednesday evening was much-needed, but Eddie Howe knows his side have not yet responded to the bitter Premier League defeat at West Ham United last weekend.

Now, they have the opportunity to do that against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. This is a tough match, with Keith Andrews’ side rallying after a difficult summer transfer window and defying a few by easing away from the relegation pack so far this season.

The Bees have lost just one of their five home fixtures in the Premier League this term, a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City, and, alarmingly, United have not won away from St. James’ Park, losing three in a row in the top flight. They do, however, have a strong recent record against the Londoners.

With the November international break looming large, this is the perfect opportunity for the Toon to prove they have what it takes to establish consistency both on Tyneside and on the road.

However, they will have to do this without Anthony Gordon, who has been ruled out after injuring his hip in midweek.

The latest on Anthony Gordon's fitness

Gordon has not been in great form for a while. Across his past 19 Premier League outings, the England international has failed to score or assist a goal.

But the 24-year-old is still one of the most talented wingers in the country, and he will be missed against a resilient Brentford outfit.

Howe intimated in his pre-match press conference that Gordon will be unavailable, having suffered a recurrence of the hip injury that has plagued him this year after about an hour of action in the Champions League.

Of course, we can’t ignore the frustrating watch that preceded the setback. Chronicle Live gave Gordon a 5/10 match rating and commented that he didn’t look right down the left channel.

Gordon will be sidelined for this one, but Howe may well have considered replacing him anyway after a tough spell.

Harvey Barnes is the most likely candidate to move onto the left wing, but there’s an even more left-field option that the manager may want to consider, especially after Joelinton found form in the centre of the park several days ago.

Howe can unleash Gordon replacement in new role

Newcastle have enough resources available to find that elusive away win without Gordon in the mix. But it will require a big performance, with players stepping up and kick-starting their season.

Among these is Jacob Ramsey, who joined Newcastle from Aston Villa for £39m plus £4m in add-ons this summer. The Boyhood Villa fan has struggled with injuries over the past few years, but he was a popular and talented figure in the Midlands, and there’s a sense from Newcastle’s rivals that they have lost a potential superstar.

Fitness issues have plagued him at the start of his career in a new setting, and because of this, Ramsey has only featured seven times across all competitions, with just one start in the Premier League.

It was a dour day in the capital for Newcastle last weekend, but Ramsey showed something of his quality when entering the fray after the interval, with Sofascore recording that he completed two dribbles, made three recoveries and won four of six duels throughout the second half.

Given the robustness of Newcastle’s central engine room, it would be foolish to unleash Ramsey in the ten berth against tough-tackling Brentford. However, he has the dribbling ability and creativity to service Woltemade from the left, leaving Howe to pick one of Barnes or Jacob Murphy to play from the right flank.

The former Villan played like a man with a desire to nail down a starting spot at the London Stadium, and while his efforts were to no avail, his commitment cannot be questioned.

This is a versatile playmaker whose skills could damage the home side from the wing. When played out wide, Ramsey has historically had something of a penchant for an evenly spread output.

Hailed as a “monster” of an attacking midfielder by analyst Ryan McKeown, Ramsey’s pace, fluid movement and impressive athleticism – when at full fitness – now need to be channelled into something prolific. Howe signed the player with a vision in his mind, and now he must put that plan into action.

After all, despite a tough year on the Englishman’s part, he has shown his quality through his underlying data, with FBref revealing he ranks among the top 5% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past yerar for pass completion, the top 9% for tackles and the top 6% for success rate when taking on opponents per 90.

Now, the impetus is on building up match fluidity and avoiding another injury setback. Should Ramsey succeed in this, he might even come to pile pressure on Gordon for a place on the left flank.

Newcastle have options as they prepare to take on Brentford at the Gtech, and after signing a talent such as Ramsey for a hefty fee this summer, surely this is the perfect time for him to announce himself in the Premier League under Howe’s wing.

MLB Asks Yankees to Ban Fans Involved With Mookie Betts Interference From Game 5

Major League Baseball has asked the New York Yankees to ban the two fans involved with the Mookie Betts interference in Game 4 from attending Game 5, according to a report from Jesse Rogers of ESPN. The two fans, identified as Austin Capobianco and John Peter, will be refunded for the cost of their tickets.

Capobianco and Peter attempted to yank the baseball out of Betts's glove on a foul ball down the line in right field in the bottom of the first inning in Game 3. The umpires ruled fan interference and Gleyber Torres out.

The two fans were ejected from the game shortly thereafter. When asked about the play afterwards, it's fair to say the two fans were unapologetic.

"We always joke about the ball in our area," said Capobianco, who was the one who pried the ball out of Betts's glove. "We're not going to go out of our way to attack. If it's in our area, we're going to 'D' up. Someone defends, someone knocks the ball. We talk about it. We're willing to do this. I know when I'm in the wrong and as soon as I did it, I was like, 'Boys I'm out of here. I patrol that wall and they know that."

Game 5 is set for Wednesday night in the Bronx, as the Yankees try to keep their season alive and force Game 6 back in Los Angeles.

Man Utd boss Marc Skinner claims rivals City were 'not that far ahead' despite humiliating derby defeat that leaves WSL title hopes in pieces

Manchester United manager Marc Skinner delivered a surprisingly defiant assessment after his side suffered a heavy derby defeat at the Etihad. He insisted that Manchester City were “not that far ahead” despite a humbling 3-0 scoreline that leaves United’s title hopes hanging by a thread. United were outplayed from the first whistle to the last as they registered zero shots on target and struggled to generate any attacking threat. The shocking performance comes just three days after their historic 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Women’s Champions League at Old Trafford.

  • City dominate early before cracking United open

City's aggressive pressing and dominance in central areas immediately forced United onto the back foot. Yet, for the opening half-hour, their superiority lacked an end product, with United managing to survive the early storm. But the resistance fractured shortly after the midpoint of the first half. Lauren Hemp’s pinpoint delivery found Khadija Shaw, whose cushioned header across goal allowed Rebecca Knaak to nod home from close range. The match swung decisively before the interval. United believed a foul had been missed in the build-up to City’s second goal, but Amy Fearn again dismissed their protests. Kerstin Casparij’s driven cross picked out Shaw, who stabbed past Mary Earps to double City’s advantage. Any remaining hope was extinguished minutes later when United gifted possession in a dangerous area. Hemp pounced with ruthless efficiency, sweeping a curling finish into the top corner to put City 3-0 ahead and effectively end the contest before half-time.

    Defiant Skinner offers surprising verdict

Despite the gulf in the scoreline and the lack of genuine openings, Skinner delivered a surprising verdict afterwards.

"It's a strange feeling to have lost the game 3-0 and still feel the opponent wasn't that far ahead of you", he said.

United entered the derby with obvious fatigue after a gruelling week that included their first-ever Champions League match at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, City, who are free from European commitments, benefitted from a less demanding schedule. But Skinner refused to use that as justification.

"We won't use it as an excuse," he said after the game. "We had an advantage on City last year when they were doing the same. It's nothing against City, they did what they had to do today. For us, we've designed the squad, but it needs to be impacted by the winter window, to be clear."

  • Skinner wants reinforcements

However, the United manager made clear that his squad, which is stretched by injuries and the pressure of a busier calendar, urgently needs reinforcements.

"It needs to support these players that are giving absolutely everything," he said. "It wasn't a lack of commitment, the players gave as much as they could, but in moments we switched off. That can be fatigue. Our standards is that we can't accept that, we have to fix it going into Wolfsburg [in the Champions League on Wednesday].

"We've got to fight. We've got a bit more recovery time. We've had to walk through training this week, it's these factors we're getting used to now being in the Champions League. I'm not moaning about that, we have to take the challenge on. That's why in the winter window we have to supply some support for the players."

United’s attack under the microscope after toothless derby display

Perhaps the clearest indictment of United’s performance was their lack of threat in the final third. Skinner wants reinforcements in the attacking department, where depth has been stretched to breaking point.

"If I look at the way we attacked today, I felt we were a bit passive, I'm going to make sure we look at that as an area to support the fantastic work our players are already doing," he said.

However, he made it clear that the management remains adamant to improve the women's team and added: "The club care about the women's team, I'll be clear on that. Us identifying the right talent and bringing them in in the right moment is key. We're working hard behind the scenes to do so. I have no doubt the club care. What we need to do is bring the right people in."

The win moves City four points clear at the top of the Women’s Super League. United, meanwhile, remain in third, now seven points adrift of City and three behind Chelsea. For a team hoping to mount a genuine title challenge, the derby defeat represents a reality check. It is a reminder of the work still required to bridge the divide between themselves and England’s elite.

Brook backs butchered Baker after chastising ODI debut

Harry Brook has promised that the England team will rally around Sonny Baker ahead of the second ODI at Lord’s on Thursday, after the fast bowler endured a debut to forget in a brutally one-sided series opener against South Africa at Headingley.Baker, 22, was taken for 76 runs in seven wicketless overs – the most-expensive figures ever conceded by an England bowler in his first ODI – while his economy rate of 10.85 was the second-worst by any debutant to have bowled a minimum of six overs in the format.Baker’s day arguably peaked before the toss, when, in the presence of his family members, he was presented his England cap by his new team-mate Jos Buttler – a fellow alumnus of King’s College, Taunton. Thereafter, with England being bowled out for 131 inside 25 overs, he was on a hiding to nothing, starting from his own contribution to that scoreline: a first-ball duck courtesy of Keshav Maharaj.Baker was then thrown the ball for the first over of South Africa’s chase. He had come into the game with apparent form and confidence, courtesy of his explosive displays for Manchester Originals in the Hundred, but his combined figures of 6 for 81 in his previous 67 balls proved to be little preparation for Aiden Markram in a serious hurry. His skiddy pace was crashed for three fours in his first five balls, and 56 in his initial four-over spell, as Markram rushed through to a 23-ball half-century.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“It’s not probably the ideal start, having to defend 130,” Brook admitted at the post-match presentations, adding that England had “no excuses” after a batting display that “wasn’t good enough”.”Everybody will get behind him,” Brook added. “That’s the nature of this group. We are such a tight-knit group. We’re all good mates. We spend a lot of time away from the game together as well.”He’s had a tough day, but the way that he just kept on cracking on and digging deep, to keep on running in and try and get wickets there for us, even after getting a little bit of tap, was awesome to see. And that’s exactly what we asked of every bowler.”With the game as good as over after South Africa’s 67-run powerplay, Brook admitted that England treated the remainder of the innings as a de facto practice session, and turned back to Baker for a second spell – down the hill from the Kirkstall Lane End – in the 12th over. He initially fared better, conceding just two runs in his fifth over, but Markram and Ryan Rickelton continued to attack him thereafter as their opening stand reached 121 in 18 overs.Related

“I was just trying to get him a wicket, to be honest,” Brook said. “Obviously we didn’t get off to the greatest of starts with the ball. After the start that they got, I knew that we were never really going to win the game. It was just a matter of trying to get him a pole at that time, and the lads trying to develop and upskill their skills, that they’ve been working on in practice and trying to take them into a game.”The way that they chased that, with Markham coming out and going really ultra-aggressive, was the perfect way to chase a low score, especially in the powerplay, when you’ve only got one or two people out,” he added. “It is tough to defend. So [Baker] might have missed his execution the odd time, but Markram played some extraordinary shots, so hats off to him.”Markram finished with 86 from 55 balls, eventually falling to Adil Rashid with a century just about within his sights.”I definitely didn’t pre-plan anything,” he said of his assault on Baker. “I’ve never faced him before, and there’s some really good talk about him and his abilities. So really I just trying to watch the ball. You want to see the action first, but if you can get a few away early, and you can get ahead of him, then you try and do that. But it won’t always be the case. If he’s got it on a string, he’ll be a really good bowler, for sure.”

'It exploded!' – Micky van de Ven admits he might never score a better goal than 'viral' Champions League effort for Tottenham

Micky van de Ven has admitted he might never top his wonderful solo goal he bagged in Tottenham's 4-0 win over Copenhagen this month. The defender was speaking after Netherlands' disappointing 1-1 draw against Poland in Warsaw on Friday, a tie that saw the 24-year-old take off on another of his patented lung busting sprints forward with the ball.

Van de Ven's patented lung busting runs for club and country

The 24-year-old was responsible for a rare highlight during the Oranje's frustrating evening in Poland. In the 17th minute, he won the ball back deep in his own half, setting off on another length  of the field dribble that saw him ride multiple challenges before eventually winning a free kick in the attacking third.

It inevitably drew comparisons to Van de Ven's exploits for his club, with journalists asking if he thought he could replicate his scarcely believable solo effort from the week prior. That prompted the rapid defender, who was playing as a left back in Ronald Koeman's side, to admit he will likely never top his effort against the Danish champions.

Van de Ven called the reaction to his goal "chaos", revealing that he was inundated with messages after the game.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportVan de Ven: "A better goal will be tough"

When asked whether he thought he could re-create that famous moment, the Tottenham defender replied: "That would have been nice, wouldn't it? I have to say: at one point, when that guy made that sliding tackle, I thought: 'I can keep going.' But it was difficult to maintain that pace. A better goal than the last one will be tough.

He added: "It went viral. It was chaos. It exploded. I got it sent to me by all sorts of people, which was quite nice."

Van de Ven's reaction to Netherlands draw against Poland

Van de Ven did not pull any punches in his assessment of Netherlands' performance in Warsaw. The Oranje fell behind to a Jakub Kaminski goal in the 43rd minute, however, they quickly replied in the opening moments of the second half when Memphis Depay tucked home the rebound after Donyell Malen's header was saved. While the visitors enjoyed 58% of the ball, they struggled to create many meaningful chances, with Poland taking 14 shots compared to their six. Van de Ven said he and his teammates were too slow in their buildup.

"I think we played with too little tempo," he said. "There were few deep runs and few moments where we created anything."

Despite playing most of his club football in the centre of defence, the speedster has typically operated as a left back in Koeman's side. Arsenal's Jurrien Timber got the nod alongside Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the backline against Poland, while Nathan Ake, Mathis de Ligt and Jan Paul van Hecke all started from the bench, demonstrating the quality and depth Netherlands boast at the position. With so many options, Van de Ven is content to start from the left.

"As far as I know, I'm simply considered a left-back," he said.

AFPVan de Ven's pace an asset in any side

The raw speed Van de Ven has exhibited throughout his career makes him a valuable asset to both club and country, regardless of his starting position. While he may never score another goal quite like that effort against Copenhagen, his marauding runs forward have provided other memorable game breaking interventions. Early on his Spurs career, his assist in a 3-0 away win at Manchester United where he reached a top speed of 37.12km/h, the fastest run of any player in the 2024-25 Premier League season, announced him to the English football public in spectacular style. Those moments, plus his reliable defensive performances, have sparked rumours that the Dutchman is set to sign a lucrative new deal in north London.

With Netherlands all but guaranteed of a spot in next summer's World Cup, he will likely have the chance to demonstrate his freakish pace on the game's biggest stage. Oranje can confirm their spot in the tournament with a draw against Lithuania on Monday.

Wolves rejected by up and coming manager as Fosun forced to look elsewhere

Inigo Perez, who currently manages La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, is the latest name “under consideration” by Wolverhampton Wanderers to fill their current vacancy in the dugout.

After picking up just two points from an available 30 in their opening 10 Premier League games, Vitor Pereira was dismissed from his post as manager. Wolves have determined who will take interim charge of the club against Chelsea on Saturday, but will no doubt hope for a swift appointment as James Collins took press conference duties on Friday.

Unsurprisingly, a number of managers have been linked with Wolves and it will take a gargantuan effort to lift the Old Gold out of their current slump. Middlesbrough manager Rob Edwards appears to be their preferred choice, although Boro are hesitant to let go of the head coach who, hired last summer, has made a strong start at the Riverside Stadium.

Reports from Spain, however, have indicated that Wolves were looking to options from abroad to replace Pereira.

Wolves keen on Perez of Rayo Vallecano

Radio Marca, as per Sport Witness, have stated that Inigo Perez has “received calls from Wolves” about becoming their next manager. A former midfielder, Perez spent a season as Rayo Vallecano’s assistant manager under Andoni Iraola, who is now doing brilliant things with Bournemouth.

Returning to the club in 2024 as manager, Perez guided Vallecano to Conference League football through their eighth-placed finish in La Liga last season. The club are unbeaten in Europe after three matches and with 11 league games played, are 10th in the table.

Perez has since acknowledged that he understands comparisons between Iraola, himself and the way their teams play, a brand of football that is clearly effective.

Interest in Perez is understandable, though Diario de Navarra, once again as per Sport Witness, have claimed that Perez “wants to stay at Rayo Vallecano until the end of this season.” As such, he has “rejected the offers” he has received from Wolves and other interested parties.

It feels imperative that Wolves, who are still without a league win this season, soon find a replacement for Pereira, given the predicament they find themselves in. Perez, however, will seemingly not be that man.

If Perez continues to impress as he has done during his reign so far, then he may soon follow Iraola to the Premier League. It would appear that, for now, Wolves will have to turn to an alternative target.

Ex Man Utd manager would be open to talks with Wolves

Amir and Carty play the starring roles as Knight Riders end Falcons jinx

Keacy Carty and Alex Hales put on an 87-run stand for the second wicket in the Knight Riders’ chase after the bowlers had set a modest target for them

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Aug-2025Nicholas Pooran finished the game with a huge six off Jayden Seales with eight balls and eight wickets in the bank, but Trinbago Knight Riders’ jinx-breaking win over Antigua and Barbuda Falcons (they had lost all three games prior to this one) on Wednesday night in CPL 2025 had been all-but confirmed well before that.First, by Mohammad Amir, Andre Russell and Akeal Hosein, who picked up seven wickets between them to set up a chase of 147. And then by a partnership worth 87 runs between Alex Hales and Keacy Carty for the second wicket, which took its time (73 balls), but Knight Riders were never in a hurry.Related

Colin Munro: 'If you don't score, it's not the end of the world'

In between, young McKenny Clarke pulled off a most remarkable catch in the deep, running to intercept a shot off Jewel Andrew, Falcons’ best batter on the night, and then just sticking a hand out and finding the ball in it.It was all rather comprehensive for Knight Riders, who had lost all their three games against Falcons before this one, and gave them a big start to their home leg, while also taking them to No. 2, just behind Falcons, on the points table.Pooran, though, had done exactly what Knight Riders wanted him to at the start, winning the toss and giving Amir & Co a chance to have a go at the Falcons batters. Amir was on the job right away, trapping Rahkeem Cornwall lbw second ball and doing the same to Karima Gore off the fifth ball of the over.

The comeback came from Andrew, in the main, and Andries Gous, as Falcons made 43 runs in the powerplay, giving them a bit of a base to build from. Except that Hosein soon sent back Gous, who made a slow 17-ball 14, and Shakib Al Hasan (13 from 14), and then came that catch from Clarke, which ended Andrew’s stay at 40 from 31 balls. Russell, the bowler, also sent back Fabian Allen in the same over, leaving Falcons at a precarious 71 for 6.Another fightback was in order for the table-toppers, and it came from captain Imad Wasim and his countrymate Usama Mir. Imad ended with 37 not out in 25 balls and Mir 34 in 26, and Falcons had at least something to play with. And when Shakib got rid of the in-form Colin Munro in the fourth over, there was hope in the Falcons camp. But that’s when Hales, slow to start with and then at pace with the requirement, and Carty got together, batted till the middle of the 16th over, and left the rest of the Knight Riders batters with very little to do. Carty got to his half-century first, finishing with 60 from 45 before being the second man out.Hales, though, stayed put, completed his half-century, and remained unbeaten on 55 off 46 balls when Pooran finished the game, himself unbeaten on an 11-ball 23.
