Gary Neville reveals the only two things you need to get a result v Arsenal

Gary Neville has slammed Arsenal and Mikel Arteta’s tactics in the wake of the 1-1 draw against Manchester City on Sunday.

Gunners rescue late draw against Man City

Although the Gunners will be disappointed not to take all three points against Man City, they will be pleased they managed to rescue a late draw, with Gabriel Martinelli equalising in injury time.

However, Arteta’s side have been widely criticised for viewing draws against Premier League title rivals as acceptable results in the past, and they are now five points behind Liverpool, who continued their perfect start to the season in the Merseyside derby.

In fairness, the north Londoners have already had some tough fixtures, but Arteta will be wary of not allowing a sizeable gap to open up too early, given that his side did not manage to recover from a relatively slow start last season.

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast after the game, however, the former Manchester United defender appeared to point the finger at the manager for his tactical approach, which heavily focuses on dominating set-pieces. He claims all you need to deal with Arteta’s methods are tall players and a physically dominant goalkeeper who clears and claims crosses.

Neville said: “They’re a one-trick pony. Set-pieces are just such a large percentage of their chances and goals that you end up in a situation where you’ve just got to have big players in the box and a goalkeeper who comes and punches, and if you don’t you’re gonna get beat up on corners and set-pieces and free-kicks.

“Arsenal are not creating enough chances in these types of games. They’re scoring lots of goals from set-pieces, six out of their nine goals before this game have come from set-pieces, one of them was a penalty. Now that’s great that they’re good at set-pieces, but it’s not good enough.”

Neville right to call Arteta's tactics into question

In the post-match interview, Arteta appeared to suggest his side could have taken more from the match, saying: “At the very least [we deserved a point]. I’m so proud of my players, the way we played, the way we dominated almost every aspect of the game. Very disappointed not to win the game.”

However, it is difficult to agree, given that Viktor Gyokeres was largely anonymous, receiving very little service throughout the match.

Having recorded a total xG of 0.97, compared to 0.96 from City, a draw was probably a fair result, and as pointed out by Neville, Arsenal need to start creating more from open play.

After trailing for so long, Arteta will be happy his side managed to force their way back into the game, but the five-point gap that’s already opened up will be concerning, particularly considering the fixtures don’t get any easier, with Newcastle United away up next in the Premier League.

Everton ready to trigger £26m release clause for int'l full-back in January

Everton are now reportedly willing to trigger the £26m release clause in an “incredibly solid” player’s contract when the January transfer window opens.

Everton look to build on impressive start

The Blues are back in Premier League action this weekend after the September international break, with Aston Villa making the trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

After the disappointment of losing at Leeds United in the opening game of the season, Everton have responded impressively with two wins in the league, with new signing Jack Grealish catching the eye with his performances, and David Moyes continuing to thrive in his second stint as manager.

Villa will pose a greater threat to the Blues than Brighton and Wolves did, however, with Unai Emery’s side among the teams with genuine European aspirations, despite not yet impressing in 2025/26, failing to win any of their opening three matches.

Another win for Everton on Saturday, against strong opposition, would further suggest that an exciting campaign is on the cards for them, and now a player has been linked with a move to the club in January.

Everton willing to trigger £26m release clause for full-back

According to a report from Spain, Everton have decided to trigger Espanyol right-back Omar El Hilali’s £26m release clause in the next transfer window. The clause has now increased to £26m after El Hilali made his debut for Morocco during the international break.

The Blues tried to sign the 22-year-old in the summer window, but failed to get a deal over the line, however, it looks as though he is still a priority target, with The Friedkin Group not messing around when it comes to transfers of late.

El Hilali is a young player with a huge amount of promise, but also someone who could come straight in as a starter for Everton, providing great competition for Jake O’Brien at right-back from the off.

The Morocco international has racked up a total of 90 appearances for Espanyol, and 44 in La Liga, also registering seven assists in that time and showing that he can shine in one of Europe’s toughest leagues.

He's like Grealish: Everton have found their best teen talent since Rooney

ByWill Miller Sep 12, 2025

El Hilali has also been lauded by scout Jacek Kulig, who described him as “incredibly solid” during last season, helping his side finish 14th in La Liga.

Still only 22, Everton would be bringing in a long-term acquisition in El Hilali – one who should only improve as a player as the years pass, and he would be a different option to O’Brien, arguably adding more natural attacking quality than the Irishman, who is still a centre-back by trade.

Bad news for Nuno: Arteta must axe Martinelli & start Arsenal's "magician"

The mood around Arsenal at the moment is a brilliant one.

Mikel Arteta’s side closed the gap on Liverpool atop the Premier League to just two points with their win over Newcastle United last weekend.

Then during the week, they picked up another three points in the Champions League thanks to a steady 2-0 win against Olympiacos.

This weekend brings a fresh challenge as Nuno Espírito Santo’s West Ham United make their way to the Emirates for a game that Arteta can win by boldly dropping Gabriel Martinelli.

Arteta's record against Nuno

This afternoon’s game against West Ham will be the eighth time Arteta has faced off against Nuno since becoming a head coach, and as things stand, the Spaniard has a good record against him.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Of the seven games they’ve already managed, the Gunners’ boss has won four, lost two and drawn one.

Interestingly, all seven games have been in the league, with three against Wolverhampton Wanderers, one against Tottenham Hotspur, and three against Nottingham Forest.

The most recent match between the two managers was a 0-0 draw at the City Ground back in February – a result emblematic of the North Londoners’ title challenge fizzling out.

Unsurprisingly, given the record, the Spaniard’s side has a healthy goal difference against the former Sao Tome-born boss, scoring 12 goals across the seven games and only conceding six.

However, while Arteta has generally gotten the better of Nuno, it would be fair to say that their most notable meeting was a 2-1 Wolves win in February 2021, as both Bernd Leno and David Luiz managed to get themselves sent off.

The Brazilian was handed his marching orders for a foul in the penalty area, and the German for handling the ball outside of it.

Arteta will be hoping for an altogether more straightforward win this afternoon, and one way he can do that is by dropping Martinelli for another attacking star.

The Arsenal star Arteta should start in place of Martinelli

Now, it might seem harsh to drop Martinelli after he scored against Olympiacos during the week, but there are a few reasons why Arteta should do it anyway and start Eberechi Eze in his place.

The first is that, under Nuno, there is a very good chance that West Ham will come to the Emirates and sit back for most of the game, looking to hit the Gunners on the counterattack.

So, to deal with what will likely be a low block, Arteta needs to get as many technicians on the pitch as possible, meaning Eze’s intricate dribbling and ability to play a pinpoint pass will be far more useful than Martinelli’s speed.

This then leads to the second argument, which is that, should the North Londoners find themselves a goal or two up by some point in the second half, the East Londoners will be forced to come out of their shape and stretch the game.

At this point, the speed and directness of the Brazilian will be far more helpful to the manager, and therefore, he could come on for the Englishman.

Now the club have a proper squad and a strong bench, it makes sense for the Spaniard to pick his starting line-ups based on how games are likely to play out, to maximise the team’s effectiveness and ensure players have the chance to play in situations most favourable to their skill set.

Finally, the reason the former Crystal Palace “magician,” as dubbed by Micah Richards, couldn’t just start in the middle of the park is that, over the last two games, Martin Odegaard has shown a level fans haven’t seen for well over a year.

He helped change the game at St James’ Park and was the Man of the Match on Wednesday, so dropping him now would be illogical and potentially damaging.

Ultimately, Martinelli deserves to play more, but given the sort of game it’s likely to be this afternoon and the need to keep Odegaard in midfield, Arteta should start Eze on the left.

Moody: SRH were stubborn to change

The Australian pair of Pat Cummins and Travis Head are likely to rejoin the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) squad ahead of IPL 2025’s resumption on May 17. They were among the contingent of overseas players who had left India once the IPL was suspended on May 9 for one week following cross-border tensions with Pakistan. Both players were named in Australia’s Test squad for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa at Lord’s from June 11, raising questions over whether they would return for the IPL considering SRH are already out of contention for the playoffs. The decision to resume the season was announced on May 11, after the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. It is understood that Cummins, the SRH captain, and Head, have told the franchise they will fly back to India. “Pat has a responsibility as captain of the franchise and is looking at returning,” Cummins’ manager Neil Maxwell told News Corp on Tuesday.Related

'One of the girls again': Heather Knight on moving on from captaincy

Heather Knight is looking forward to “being one of the girls again”, closing nine years’ worth of necessary distance between her and her team over the course of her England captaincy.Speaking for the first time since her long tenure as leader ended more than six weeks ago in the aftermath of England’s 16-0 Ashes defeat, Knight said she was still adjusting to the idea of simply being a player in the side.”Lots has changed,” Knight said. “I’ve just been reflecting on a really enjoyable nine years as captain. I really loved it and I’m really excited for the next chapter as well. I’ve had a bit of time to let the news digest and move forward and am quite excited for what’s to come. I’m looking forward to having a little bit more time on my hands being one of the girls again. I’m feeling pretty positive and obviously looking forward to moving on.”As captain, naturally there’s a little bit of water between you and the sides because you’re involved in decision making and things like that. I have a little bit more time on my hands to hang out with people and things like that, so that’s quite exciting.”There’s certainly bits of the captaincy that I’ll miss, but there’s certainly things I won’t miss as well. I love captaining and I think it brought the best out of me as a person and as a player. So I guess now the new challenge for me is how I get my best out of myself when I’m not captain and when I’m playing.”Related

Nat Sciver-Brunt has replaced Knight as England captain and earlier this week, in her first public engagement since her appointment and returning from maternity leave, said she was keen to pick her predecessor’s brain when the squads convene for their upcoming white-ball series with West Indies.”I’m going to be signing her up for a few coffees when we get onto tour and just getting into a few details of captaincy and how she found it,” Sciver-Brunt said. “We’ve had a great working relationship together, obviously being her vice-captain, and I don’t see that changing really going forward.”Apart from some congratulatory messages, Knight said she had only spoken briefly to Sciver-Brunt, who recently brought baby son Theo into the national performance centre at Loughborough to meet the team he and Sciver-Brunt’s wife Katherine, the former England seamer, will be touring with.Knight said: “I wish her best of luck. I said, ‘do it in your way.’ I’m really pleased for her that she’s got this opportunity. I’m there if she needs me. I’m always there as a voice. I’m very much going to get in the background and be there if needed to be called on by whoever and just look forward to focusing on the batting and supporting Nat and the team in any way that I can.”Knight played under the captaincy of Phoebe Litchfield at Sydney Thunder in the most recent edition of the WBBL and featured in the first six rounds of the Metro Bank One Day Cup domestic competition for Somerset, where Sophie Luff is skipper.Moving to the top of the order, Knight has scored 244 runs at an average of 40.66 and strike rate of 90.37 for her county. She has also taken four wickets with her off-spin, including 3 for 7 against Essex, coming out of bowling “semi-retirement” with new England Women’s head coach Charlotte Edwards’ planning to deploy her more with the ball.Knight could be swung into bowling action early for England. Left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone played her first domestic game of the season for Lancashire on Wednesday following a knee injury which Edwards said had ruled her out of selection for the West Indies series and seamer Sciver-Brunt will play as a batter only for the start of the summer as she continues her recovery from an Achilles problem. Seamers Freya Kemp and Lauren Bell are also out with back and knee injuries respectively and will miss the three T20Is and three ODIs against West Indies starting on May 21.”When I played the first game for Somerset, it was the first time I’d bowled in a match in a year,” Knight said. “I’d sort of semi-retired, I guess. I’ve enjoyed it. It’s another thing to get stuck into in the field.”I’m probably a bit more competitive when I bowl than when I bat. I like to be quite calm when I bat, but when I bowl I probably try and get in a little bit of a battle and a little bit of a fight because that gets the best out of me. I’ll always see myself as a part-timer I think, and try and do a role when I can. But I do enjoy it and I’ve been asked to bowl a little bit more. If I can provide an option and bowl a few overs down, I’ll be completely happy.”Joe Root made a successful transition from Test England captain to batter when he stepped down in 2022 after five years in the role.”He was pretty good as captain, to be honest, had a pretty good record, to be fair,” said Knight during a community event as part of the Net Gains initiative. “I think that gets missed a little bit. I’ll probably have a better record when I was captain – I’ve just done it for a long time – but it is now finding the best way to get the best out of me is a batter.”I’m just looking forward to enjoying my cricket. Not that I didn’t enjoy captaincy, I did really enjoy it, but just being a player and trying to contribute to team wins as much as I can.” IG is the Official Investment Platform of England Cricket. Farke: Leeds "blessed" to have "outstanding" £80,000-a-week star at Elland Road

Daniel Farke said Leeds United were “blessed” to have Sean Longstaff after the midfielder’s man-of-the-match display in Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth.

Longstaff, on £80,000-a-week, volleyed in off a post to put Leeds in front early in the second half at Elland Road after Joe Rodon’s header before the interval had cancelled out Antoine Semenyo’s free-kick for the visitors.

Farke hails Longstaff after Leeds draw vs Bournemouth

The £12million summer signing from Newcastle’s first Leeds goal – he also provided the corner for Rodon’s equaliser – looked to have sealed it for Farke’s side before Bournemouth’s teenage substitute Eli Kroupi struck at the far post in the third minute of stoppage time.

Farke said of Longstaff’s display:

Leeds sit mid-table in the Premier League after taking eight points from their first six games following promotion, while Bournemouth remain in the top six, three points better off.

Cherries skipper Ryan Christie admitted his side were pleased to leave Elland Road with a point, having trailed in time added on, and hailed their resilience. Christie told AFCB TV: “The way it went, we are probably happy with a point to be honest.

“The game went as we thought it would in terms of their physicality and in a high-energy stadium, they feed off that.

“But with this squad, even though you’re away from home, you never feel like you’re out of the game

“There is a resilience throughout the whole squad, which is a credit to the boys, especially when we have had the turnaround of players we’ve had this summer.

“I think everyone is feeding into this mindset of pulling together, the whole squad as one.

“It’s not just the starters and the bench and that’s it – there’s a real togetherness.”

Next up for Leeds is another home game against Tottenham in a lunchtime kick-off on Saturday, while Bournemouth face Fulham on Friday night at the Vitality Stadium.

Frank contacts £426k-a-week star "directly" over joining Tottenham in January

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is weighing in on the club’s January recruitment plans after a solid start to life at N17.

Tottenham put international break curse behind them after Leeds win

Before their latest victory at Leeds United, thanks largely to a Man of the Match display from in-form summer signing Mohammed Kudus, Spurs had suffered defeat in seven of their last seven matches prior to an international break.

A run of two consecutive Premier League draws in the build up to Leeds, not to mention a disappointing share of the spoils away to Norwegian minnows Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League, perhaps told a sign that Frank’s side could’ve been on to extend that bizarre record.

However, a gritty, resilient display on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Yorkshire saw Frank’s side come away with all three points, despite Leeds battling to the very bitter end and ferociously knocking on Spurs’ door.

Tottenham not only put that international break voodoo behind them, but they also became the first side to beat Leeds at Elland Road for over a year in the league.

It took a couple of crucial saves from Guglielmo Vicario to thwart Leeds’ attempts to get on the scoresheet for a second time, and Frank can also give a special nod to Mathys Tel, who opened the scoring after being given the starting nod ahead of Richarlison.

Dominic Solanke’s niggling ankle problem, which required minor surgery, means that Richarlison has started up top in almost every game for Spurs so far, but there are doubts that the hot and cold Brazil international can be relied upon.

Spurs are hopeful Solanke could return just after the October international break, but fitness issues have been a real issue for the Englishman since his move from Bournemouth last year.

As such, the Lilywhites are being linked with a new striker, and it is believed that former Brentford star Ivan Toney is on their radar.

Frank worked with Toney during his peak years at the Gtech Community Stadium, with the 29-year-old bagging 20 Premier League goals in the 2022/2023 season.

Since moving to Al-Ahli in 2024, Toney has scored for fun, racking up 30 strikes in 44 appearances over his debut campaign and eight goals from 10 run outs already this season.

Thomas Frank contacts Ivan Toney over joining Tottenham in January

According to a report from Indy News, Spurs could now offer the £426,000-per-week talisman a chance to make a return to his homeland.

Indeed, it is believed that Frank has personally contacted Toney over joining Tottenham on loan in January, with Chelsea named as another suitor as both sides ponder bringing in a new centre-forward mid-season.

It is unclear whether Al-Ahli would sanction a temporary move away for the number nine who’s been their arguable star player since joining, but Frank has previously lavished praise on Toney as a “remarkable” striker, so it is clear why he’d be keen to reunite with him in North London.

'Harry Kane is so clever' – English striker's strength shocked Mats Hummels but Bayern Munich striker needs a 'more awesome' celebration, says Germany legend

Former Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels waxed lyrical about Harry Kane following his record-breaking start to the 2025-26 season. The ex-Germany international believes that the English striker "will be good for a long time" as "he is so clever." The only flaw Hummels finds in Kane's game is his celebration, which "could be more awesome."

Kane on a record-breaking goal scoring spree for Bayern

Kane needed just 104 matches to set a new record for the least games taken to complete a century of goals for a single club in one of Europe's big five leagues, eclipsing Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland, who needed 105 games each with Real Madrid and Manchester City, respectively. The 32-year-old cannot be stopped at the moment, scoring 18 goals in the opening 10 games. Bayern have won 10 games out of 10, thanks in large part to Kane's exploits in the final third. As if his goal scoring feats weren't incredible enough, he has also shown immaculate application in the second striker/No.10 role behind Nicolas Jackson.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportHummels reveals which area of Kane's game left him shocked

Kane and Hummels locked horns against each other twice in the 2023-24 season, which was the former's debut campaign in the Bundesliga as well as the latter's last.

Speaking on podcast , Hummels said: "He's very strong physically. Before I played against him for the first time, I didn't know that. And I was actually always the stronger one in tackles. But he is… Wow, wow, wow. He doesn't play four players and then chip over the goalkeeper, but instead he shoots the ball rigorously into the bottom left and right corners.

"When Harry Kane has the ball on his right foot within 25 meters of the opponent's goal, you can already hear that Jabadabadu (Bayern's goal anthem). He will be good for a long time to come because he does not rely on his athleticism and he is so clever."

Kane can do better with his celebrations, says Hummels

Hummels reflected on Kane's celebration as the conversation took on a light-hearted turn. "The only issue: His celebration could be more awesome, but somehow it's also awesome because he's so sober," he added.

Kane will be hoping to continue his rich vein of form on Saturday, when Bayern Munich welcome rivals Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena.

Dortmund are looking to extend Schlotterbeck’s contract, which runs until 2027, until 2030. The extension would see his wages triple, taking his earnings close to €8 million. However, Schlotterbeck has remained non-committal about signing a renewal, as he wants to make a decision that aligns with what’s best for his career.
