The new Musiala: Chelsea reaching breakthrough in chase of £35m "superstar"

When it comes to academies, few teams in the Premier League can match Chelsea.

While they do not always make it into the Blues’ first team, the number of top-flight footballers that come out of Cobham is staggering.

However, while the club have made an enormous amount of money from selling their academy stars, they have occasionally seen future superstars slip through their fingers, with Jamal Musiala being an example of this.

Fortunately, while Enzo Maresca is unlikely to ever get his hands on the German superstar, the club are closing in on a player who has won comparisons to him.

Chelsea target their new Musiala

As well as blowing teams away on the pitch, Chelsea have enjoyed a brilliant summer off of it, in the transfer market.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The board have backed Maresca in a big way by signing the likes of Joao Pedro, Jorrel Hato, Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens.

Moreover, with just over two weeks remaining of the window, it looks like the Blues are planning to make at least one more addition to the team in the shape of a player previously compared to Musiala.

Germany star Jamal Musiala

At least that’s according to a recent report from TEAMtalk, which has reaffirmed Chelsea’s intense interest in Alejandro Garnacho.

More than that, the report has revealed that the Blues are approaching a ‘breakthrough’ in negotiations for the Argentine and believe Manchester United will agree to a fee of around £35m before the window closes.

If this really is the case, then the West Londoners would have done incredibly well to sign a player as talented as Garnacho for such a low fee, especially as he’s been compared to Musiala.

How Garnacho compares to Musiala

So, before we get into some of the other positives to signing Garnacho, we should look at where this comparison to Musiala has come from, as some might describe it as a bold shout.

Alejandro Garnarcho for Manchester United.

Well, in this instance, it stems from FBref, which looked at players in similar positions in the 23/24 edition of the Champions League and came to the conclusion that the German star was the eighth most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the United ace in the competition.

While that might not seem right to some, we can gain a better understanding of how this conclusion was reached by taking a look at some of the underlying numbers in which the pair ranked closely.

In this case, those metrics included things like non-penalty expected goals plus assists, shots, goal-creating actions, tackles and more, all per 90.

These numbers point to a player who, when he’s at his best, is capable of being just as much a creator as a scorer of goals, and that is very much how people would describe Musiala today.

However, while comparison to someone as incredibly talented as the German is arguably reason enough to sign the 21-year-old, another reason the West Londoners should go out and get him is his output from last season.

For example, despite playing for a historically poor United side, the future “superstar”, as journalist Liam Canning once dubbed him, was still able to score 11 goals and provide ten assists in 58 appearances.

Ultimately, while Garancho is not on the level of Musiala at the moment, the fact that he’s capable of putting up numbers so similar to his is hugely encouraging, and if Chelsea can get the best out of him, they may just have a world-beater on their hands.

Chelsea make approach to sign £211k-a-week outcast with Simons and Garnacho

Chelsea have enjoyed yet another busy summer transfer window under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, with many more deals expected to be done before the transfer deadline on September 1.

This is both in terms of incomings and outgoings, as UEFA are putting pressure on Chelsea to register a positive transfer balance by next month, or face an inability to register new signings for the Champions League.

UEFA fined Chelsea in July for being in breach of FFP, so this was agreed as part of the settlement.

He'd offer more than Jackson: £50m star only wants to sign for Chelsea

Chelsea are looking to close a few more deals before the end of the summer transfer window.

ByAngus Sinclair Aug 12, 2025

Since this agreement with UEFA, Chelsea have raised nearly £220 million in permanent transfer sales, which nearly balances out their near-£277 million spent on incoming players this month.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, Basir Humphreys, Noni Madueke, Marcus Bettinelli, Mathis Amougou, Djordje Petrovic, João Félix, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Armando Broja and Lesley Ugochukwu have all departed Stamford Bridge, with a few more expected to follow.

Carney Chukwuemeka, Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson are among the high-profile names who appear set to leave Chelsea before the transfer deadline, which will also free up room for RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons and Man United winger Alejandro Garnacho to come in.

Chelsea have been in talks to sign both Simons and Garnacho since last week (Sky Sports), with Enzo Maresca potentially set to be backed with a stunning double which could be worth around £100 million.

The duo are determined to join Maresca, according to credible reports, with Garnacho setting his sights on Chelsea as his “only” preferred destination (David Ornstein).

Simons, meanwhile, is waiting patiently for Leipzig and Chelsea to agree a fee after shaking hands on personal terms with the Blues (Florian Plettenberg).

Interestingly, Chelsea are also still in the market for a new goalkeeper, according to RMC Sport.

Chelsea make approach to sign PSG outcast Gianluigi Donnarumma

As per the French news outlet, £211,000-per-week PSG outcast Gianluigi Donnarumma is on their radar as an alternative to Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen.

The Italy number one won’t sign a new deal with PSG, as widely reported, and he’s since been axed from Luis Enrique’s squad for their looming UEFA Super Cup clash against Tottenham.

This has seemingly alerted Cobham chiefs to an opportunity, with Chelsea making an inquiry over signing Donnarumma alongside Man United.

The 26-year-old is still very young in his goalkeeping years, but already possesses a wealth of top-level know-how- making 412 appearances across his spells at the Parc des Princes and AC Milan.

Donnarumma boasts four Ligue 1 titles, a Champions League winner’s medal, three Goalkeeper of the Season awards and a Euro 2020 triumph with Italy among his many honours, and you could make a serious case that he’s exactly the type of experienced figurehead that Maresca is missing.

Given his deal expires in less than a year and could leave PSG for just £26 million, this deal almost seems like a no-brainer.

Australia to monitor Marsh as incumbents backed after drubbing

“We haven’t won a game this year so we’ve got to put ourselves in a position to potentially risk losing to try and win,” said Tasmania paceman Gabe Bell. “But I think there’s enough in this wicket, as we’ve seen the last three days, to get 10 wickets tomorrow.”In the third session, Ward brought up a third half-century from as many first-class knocks this summer by hitting Australian white-ball spinner Adam Zampa to backward square leg for a single. It came after the 26-year-old top-scored with 92 in the first innings to push Tasmania to their first-innings lead.”Tim’s batted really well this whole match,” Bell said.Beau Webster helped Tasmania beef up their total as he hopes to put himself in the frame as a chance for Test selection later this summer.Despite the hefty loss to India in Perth, Australia coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed he plans to take the same XI to Adelaide. Ideal Antonio replacement: West Ham agree terms to sign £13m "diamond"

Michail Antonio will go down as one of West Ham United’s modern-day greats.

Earlier this week, the club confirmed that the Jamaican international had left the club following the expiration of his contact.

Thus, in need of a new striker, has Graham Potter identified his top target?

West Ham's search for a new striker

Antonio joined the Hammers from Nottingham Forest a decade ago for a reported fee of £7m, initially signed as a right-back, but ultimately transformed into their best centre-forward of the 21st century, scoring 83 goals in claret and blue, making him the club’s record scorer of all-time in the Premier League.

Michail Antonio.

His final appearance for West Ham came in December, suffering a life-threatening car crash soon after, stating himself “I was close to dying”, before returning to competitive football earlier this summer, featuring in all three of Jamaica’s matches at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in June.

Even at 35, Antonio will take some replacing, but have the Irons identified their man?

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Well, according to French outlet wiw Sports, West Ham have reached an agreement in principle on personal terms to sign Idrissa Gueye from Metz, adding that negotiations have reached the final stages.

Elsewhere, a report by Foot Mercato claims that the deal will cost €15m (around £13m), adding that both Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund had previously been interested in the youngster.

Well, if his West Ham career turns out to be even half as successful as the aforementioned Antonio, that’ll prove to be a bargain.

What Idrissa Gueye will bring to West Ham

Given that he is just 18 years old, not a lot is widely known about Gueye, so what do we know?

Well, he came through the famous Génération Foot academy in Senegal, before following the familiar pathway from there to Metz, a path trodden by Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé, Ismaïla Sarr, Pape Matar Sarr and former hammer Diafra Sakho, as well as many others, in recent years.

What makes Gueye interesting is that he only made this jump in January, scoring five goals in 17 regular-season Ligue 2 games, thereby averaging a goal every 222 minutes.

West Ham forward Michail Antonio

This saw les Grenats finish third, subsequently beating both Dunkerque and then Stade Reims in the play-offs as they won promotion back to Ligue 1.

Speaking to French outlet Lesoleil, Metz sporting director Frédéric Arpinon stated that Gueye “reminds me a little” of Olivier Giroud, adding “I hope for him that he will have the same trajectory”.

Elsewhere, Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider labels him ‘one of the hottest properties’ in European football, while Sébastien Denis of Foot Mercato asserts that he is a “diamond” of a striker.

Gueye won Metz’s player of the month, as well as Ligue 2 young player of the month during an eye-catching February, so let’s assess his statistics.

As the table emphasises, Gueye is a player of enormous talent, but one who is still very raw, which shouldn’t be too surprising considering, as recently as January, he was plying his trade in the Senegalese Premier League which, according to the CAF association rankings, is the 17th strongest league in Africa.

So why will he be the ideal Antonio replacement?

Michail Antonio.

Well, West Ham already boast Niclas Füllkrug and have also signed Callum Wilson on a free transfer, both of whom are vastly experienced, allowing Gueye to learn from them, and not demanding that he is a starter from day one.

According to Global Football Rankings, Ligue 2 is the 30th strongest league in the world, making it the fifth best second-tier on the planet, behind the EFL Championship (11th), the Zweite Bundesliga (17th), Serie B (19th) and the Segunda División (24th).

Thus, Gueye has already proven he can score goals at a relatively high level, Ligue 2 is one place above the Saudi Pro League interestingly, and he appears to have all the attributes to thrive in the Premier League.

Dream Ramsey alternative: West Ham plot late move for £50m "massive talent"

Fabrizio Romano: Tottenham working on signing attacker after Gibbs-White blow

Fabrizio Romano has shared an encouraging Tottenham transfer update after the club unfortunately missed out on a deal for Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White.

Tottenham set to make offer for "sensational" £45m star after holding talks

Spurs have been in contact over a deal for a midfielder, with an opening bid now in the works.

Jul 28, 2025

Spurs head coach Thomas Frank was dealt his first blow as Lilywhites manager with the surprise Saturday announcement that Gibbs-White signed a new deal at the City Ground.

Just over two weeks ago, the England international was on the verge of joining Frank’s side. Chairman Daniel Levy was ready to trigger his £60 million release clause in another quick-fire, statement deal right after they signed Mohammmed Kudus for £55 million from West Ham (ESPN).

The move was so advanced, in fact, that Spurs scheduled a medical for the attacking midfielder on July 11 – but Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis somehow managed to block his transfer in unprecedented fashion.

Marinakis threatened legal action against Tottenham for an alleged ‘illegal’ approach for Gibbs-White, accusing them of both tapping up the player and breaching confidentiality rules surrounding his release clause (Sky Sports).

Since then, Marinakis did what he hasn’t been able to do for the last 12 months – convince the 25-year-old to agree a contract extension.

With Gibbs-White now committing his future, Frank, Levy and technical director Johan Lange are now forced to enter the market for an alternative number 10 – which they’re in serious need of.

Tottenham really struggled for creativity against League One side Luton Town last weekend, and while it’s important not to read too much into pre-season preparations, Frank will be hoping it isn’t a sign of things to come.

James Maddison is still coming back from a knee injury which has kept him out of pre-season so far, but the Englishman has been included in Tottenham’s squad list for their imminent tour of Asia.

Tottenham working on signing Morgan Gibbs-White alternative

According to Fabrizio Romano, writing in GiveMeSport’s newsletter, Spurs are very much still on the look-out for another creative midfielder after missing out on Gibbs-White.

Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White

While no names have come up just yet, Romano states that Tottenham are actively “working” on signing a Gibbs-White alternative right now – coming as some much-needed good news after what was a waste of two weeks.

“They’re working on it [alternative targets for Gibbs-White],” said Romano. “As soon as I know, I will tell you.”

In terms of quality candidates, we believe that Spurs should look no further than Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze.

Arsenal are believed to be pursuing a deal for Eze, but nothing is done yet, and Spurs have been credibly linked with the 27-year-old this window (talkSPORT).

The England international, who commands a £60 million release clause which could rise to £68 million through bonuses (Sky Sports), would come at a similar price to what Levy was willing to pay for Gibbs-White.

Eze also bagged 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions last term, including the FA Cup final-winning goal against Man City, would undoubtedly upgrade Frank’s options, and he’s almost a no-brainer to at least consider.

Arteta's new Saka: Berta working to sign "incredible" £86m star for Arsenal

While finally getting over the hill and winning the Premier League is going to require a Herculean effort from the team, it would be fair to say spirits are high around Arsenal at the moment.

Mikel Arteta’s side beat AC Milan in Singapore and then got one over Newcastle United in Hong Kong, and now have a North London derby to look forward to tomorrow.

Unsurprisingly, one of the stars of pre-season so far has been Bukayo Saka, who scored the only goal in the first game and was more than lively in the second.

So, fans should be thrilled about reports linking them with another international superstar who could be Arteta’s new Saka.

Arsenal target their new Saka

While the football in pre-season has been great, it’s been an even better summer for Arsenal off the pitch.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

After years of fans crying out for one, the club have finally signed a new top-quality number nine in Viktor Gyokeres, and that’s not all, as Martin Zubimendi looks like he could be even more consequential at the base of midfield.

Moreover, Arteta won’t have to worry about squad depth quite as much anymore, with Noni Madueke, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard and Cristhian Mosquera all coming in to bolster the squad.

Yet, even with six new faces through the door, the North Londoners want to do more business, business which could see them land their new Saka.

At least that is according to a recent report from Spain, which has claimed Arsenal have a ‘clear name’ in mind when it comes to further improving the squad this summer: Rodrygo.

While the report reveals that the Gunners will likely have to sell a player or two before signing the Brazilian, it does not mention how much he might eventually cost them.

However, multiple stories from earlier this summer indicate that a fee of around £86m could be enough to seal the deal, and while that’s a lot of money, it would be worth it for a player of Rodrygo’s quality, especially as he could be the club’s new Saka.

Why Rodrygo could be Arsenal's new Saka

So, before the pitchforks and torches come out, we aren’t necessarily saying Rodrygo will come in and be just as good as Saka right away, as the Englishman has practically made this team his own over the last few years and is unquestionably now world-class.

However, we are saying that there is every chance the Real Madrid star could come in and end up having a similar impact on the left-hand side, albeit without the homegrown academy product side of things.

Why do we think this? Well, for starters, despite playing out of position for much of the last two seasons, the Brazilian has remained a seriously dangerous attacker.

For example, the “incredible” talent, as dubbed by former manager Carlo Ancelotti, has found the back of the net on 31 occasions and provided 20 assists in 105 appearances, totalling 7159 minutes.

That translates to a brilliant average of a goal involvement every 2.05 games, or every 140.37 minutes across the last two years, which is a level of output the Gunners’ left side could do with.

Second, much in the same way the Hale End icon has taken the club on his back in the past, the former Santos gem has often been the difference maker in big European games for his side.

In 64 Champions League games, the 24-year-old has scored 25 goals and provided 14 assists, but crucially, eight of his goals have come in the knockout rounds and eight have been game-winning.

Finally, despite neither one of them being particularly tall, they’ve proven themselves to be tough to dispossess in recent seasons, be that through sheer strength or an underappreciated ability with the ball at their feet.

Moreover, when given space, both wingers can be quite explosive and an absolute nightmare for backtracking defenders, with FBref placing the Brazilian in the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers in Europe’s top five leagues for carries into the penalty area and the Englishman in the top 11%.

Ultimately, while Saka will likely always be the most popular player at Arsenal thanks to his deep ties with the fans and club, Rodrygo could be almost as effective as him off the left, and therefore, Arteta and Co should be doing all they can to sign him this summer.

49ers lining up Leeds swoop for £17m star who's as exciting as Paixao

Leeds United supporters were hit with a devastating blow on Monday evening when Fabrizio Romano gave Marseille the ‘here we go’ treatment for Igor Paixao.

It had been reported earlier in the day that the Whites were expected to agree a deal in the region of £28m to sign the Brazilian forward from Feyenoord ahead of the French side.

However, as you can see in the post above, Marseille now have a deal ‘in place’ to sign the 25-year-old star, who they have reached an agreement with over a five-year contract.

Romano claims that Paixao ‘wanted’ to sign for the French side despite Leeds United’s attempts to swoop in and convince him to make the move to England.

Given that Lukas Nmecha as a free transfer is the only attacking signing the Whites have made so far this summer, missing out on the winger has come as a big blow for the club.

However, it will be interesting to see how the Feyenoord star handles a move to a top five league in Europe, as Leeds have been burned by Eredivisie stars in the past.

Why Leeds may have dodged a bullet with Igor Paixao

It is, firstly, worth saying that Paixao would have been a very exciting signing for the club, because he enjoyed a phenomenal 2024/25 campaign in the Netherlands.

The 25-year-old star delivered 18 goals and 14 assists in all competitions from the left wing position, which shows that he has the potential to provide a huge threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

However, Leeds once splashed out a fee of £21m to sign left winger Luis Sinisterra from Feyenoord in an eerily similar move in 2022, after his impressive year in the Eredivisie.

As you can see in the table above, Sinisterra and Paixao both delivered plenty of goals and assists in their respective seasons in the Dutch top-flight for Feyenoord.

The former Leeds man, though, has only managed eight goals and three assists in 51 Premier League appearances in his career to date, which shows how hard it can be to translate that form from the Netherlands over to England.

With this in mind, the club’s latest reported target to bolster their attack may be just as exciting as the fallen through deal for Paixao would have been.

Leeds in the race to sign English star

According to Calcio Mercato, Leeds United are one of a number of teams lining up a potential swoop to sign Jonathan Rowe from Marseille this summer.

The report claims that the Whites, Bournemouth, and Roma are all interested in signing the England U21 international, whilst Atalanta may also join the race if they miss out on Ademola Lookman.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

In a funny turn of events, Calcio Mercato explains that the former Norwich City attacker may be available for clubs to snap up this summer because of the pending arrival of Paixao, who would take his place in the squad on the left flank.

The report adds that Leeds are not the only team turning to Rowe as an alternative to the Feyenoord star, as Roma are also looking at him after also missing out on Paixao.

It also reveals that it will take a fee in the region of £17m in order to secure a deal for the English winger, which means that he would be significantly cheaper than the Eredivisie sensation, but he could be just as exciting.

Why Leeds should sign Jonathan Rowe

The Whites should push to win the race to sign Rowe before the summer transfer window slams shut at the start of September because he could be just as exciting as Paixao.

First and foremost, the former Canaries star is three years younger than Paixao and still has plenty of time left before he enters the prime years of his career, which the Brazilian winger is already in.

When the Feyenoord ace was 22, he managed four goals and four assists in 18 games in the Brazilian top-flight and had not played a minute of football in Europe. Rowe, meanwhile, has played 13 Premier League matches and 28 in Ligue 1 in his career already.

The Englishman scored three goals, created eight ‘big chances’, and assisted three goals in 28 games in Ligue 1, but the young forward only started six of those appearances under Roberto De Zerbi.

As you can see in the table above, the £17m-rated star’s underlying statistics, per 90, was very impressive in comparison to his positional peers in the division, which suggests that he could have delivered far more goals and assists if he had been given more game time.

This is why the forward, who scored 13 goals for Norwich in the 2023/24 campaign, could be a very exciting signing for Leeds because he appears to have the potential to explode at the top end of the pitch if given regular starts, which Daniel Farke could offer him at Elland Road.

Whilst he may not have had a season as prolific as the one that Paixao just had, the England U21 international could be a signing that is just as exciting for the Whites because he has shown a lot of promise in a major league and has experience in England, and in the Premier League.

As well as potentially providing quality in the final third as both a scorer and a creator of goals, the 22-year-old is also a versatile forward who can play on either flank or through the middle, scoring the winner as a centre-forward for England at the U21 Euros this summer.

Rowe was once compared to Paris Saint-Germain superstar Ousmane Dembele as talent scout Jacek Kulig called him a “young Dembele” because the winger was “one of the most perfectly two-footed players” he had seen, which is why he is so adept at playing on either flank.

It is now down to Leeds to ensure that they do not lose another race for an exciting left wing target, because the Marseille whiz appears to have all the tools to be a fantastic signing for Farke.

Better signing than Paixao: Leeds in hunt to sign "exceptional" £30m star

Leeds United are reportedly in the hunt to sign an attacking midfielder who would be a better signing than Igor Paixao.
