Alex Hales shows calm after the storm to see off Durham

Durham’s late batting stutter is costly after Ollie Robinson’s half-century

Alex Hales scored an unbeaten 65 to guide Nottinghamshire Outlaws back to winning ways in the Vitality Blast, defeating Durham by five wickets at Seat Unique Riverside. The England opener was in dominant form for the Outlaws bouncing back from a duck against the Lancashire Lightning in his last outing. Hales was aggressive at the start of his knock to put his team ahead of the rate before playing the anchor role, allowing team-mates Tom Moores and Shaheen Afridi to blast Notts over the line with four balls to spare.Earlier in the day, Ollie Robinson scored his second T20 fifty in two days to top score for the hosts in their innings of 168. But, Durham were made to rue a costly end to their innings after scoring only nine from their final two overs, which played a significant role in their first defeat in the competition this season. After losing the toss, Durham’s Graham Clark looked to build on his century in their opener match and found his range in the third over, clattering Afridi for a six and boundary into the leg-side from successive deliveries before just lifting an off-drive over the head Matthew Carter at mid-off to hand the home side impetus.Conor McKerr halted Clark’s onslaught for 29 as the opener picked out Mullaney. But, Michael Jones kept Durham’s strong start alive after surviving an edge past Tom Moores from his first ball. The Scotland international scored five boundaries in a quick-fire 26 from 12 balls, but Mullaney produced a gem to bowl Jones and then prised out Alex Lees for 13.Durham required a response to stem the tide. Turner and Robinson produced a vital stand under pressure worth 57 for the fourth wicket. The two players complemented each other well with the guile of Robinson and the power of Turner providing the foundation of the Durham innings.Turner attempted to push the run rate on but presented Mullaney with his third wicket when Hales took a good low catch at long-off. Robinson pressed on and continued to defy the Nottinghamshire attack, dispatching Afridi for two boundaries to record his second Blast fifty on the bounce following his career-best effort against Yorkshire.Afridi had his revenge to bowl Robinson before he and McKerr bottled up the home side in the final two overs, which cost just nine runs, to restrict Durham to a total of 168 from their 20 overs.Joe Clarke began the Outlaws’ reply with a blistering start, scoring three boundaries and a six. But, Liam Trevaskis displayed great reactions to palm up a powerful drive to remove the opener caught and bowled. Hales answered back for the visitors, smashing 25 off one over from De Leede, including two towering sixes into the leg-side.Ben Raine and Nathan Sowter made inroads into the Nottinghamshire line-up, but Lyndon James offered a useful cameo to take the pressure on Hales to keep the visitors ahead of the required rate before he fell for 20 to Turner.Amid the fall of wickets, Hales altered his approach from aggressor to game manager, reaching his half-century from 33 balls for the 72nd time in T20 cricket. His innings allowed Moores to find his range against Trevaskis, smashing 16 off the 14th over to edge Notts closer to their victory target.Moores became Raine’s second victim of the game for 32, but there was to be no late drama as Afridi smashed two sixes off De Leede and then Trevaskis in the final over to secure the win for the visitors.

Phil Foden, you've been warned! Man City's homegrown hero told potential new signing Rayan Cherki can reach his level after 'difficult season'

Following a remarkable 2023-24 campaign that earned him the Men's PFA Players' Player of the Year, Foden entered the 2024-25 season with lofty hopes. But his output declined sharply, managing only 16 goal contributions in contrast to the 40 he produced the year before.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

With City preparing for a major reshuffle this summer, Foden may soon find increased competition within the squad as a new creative force looks set to arrive in Cherki. With Kevin De Bruyne heading toward the exit and Jack Grealish's future up in the air, Cherki is being earmarked to step into a pivotal creative role. His release clause stands at £25 million ($34m), making him a relatively inexpensive prospect for a player who tallied 12 goals and 20 assists during the 2024/25 campaign.

WHAT DESAILLY SAID

French football legend Marcel Desailly weighed in on the potential of Cherki and the impact he could make at City.

"I was scared that Rayan Cherki was going to choose Manchester United because he needs a team that has a set style," he told

"He needs a team that already has a philosophy where things work, not to ask him to go in and be the main playmaker straight away. With Manchester City, he can adapt to the philosophy of the system they already have, he can reach the level of Bernardo Silva and the level of Phil Foden, who has had a difficult season, but he is in the same bracket of player. He has a talent that has not yet been in lights, but we will see."

AFPWHAT NEXT FOR FODEN?

While Foden remains an integral part of City’s long-term plans, the looming arrival of Cherki adds pressure. The Club World Cup presents a unique opportunity for the Lyon star to immediately stake a claim for a regular place in Guardiola's plans, potentially playing alongside or even ahead of Foden. They are set to kick off their campaign on June 18 against Moroccan champions Wydad AC.

Newcastle now join race for "special" teenage star likened to Cole Palmer

Newcastle United have joined the race for a “special” young star who has been likened to Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, according to a new report.

Newcastle plan for big summer after Carabao Cup success

Newcastle have had quite the season. Not only are the Magpies firmly in the race for Champions League football next season, they also won the Carabao Cup – their first piece of major silverware in 64 years.

To clinch the trophy, Eddie Howe’s side beat Premier League leaders Liverpool 2-1 in the final at Wembley Stadium, with both Alexander Isak and Dan Burn on the scoresheet.

Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle about the club’s open-top bus parade, which took place over the weekend, Burn said: “It’s something I’ll never forget – I knew there would be a lot of people but when we saw the sheer amount of people it was amazing.

“It really hit home, what it means to the region and the city, the achievement that we’ve managed to do. The lads were starting chants all the way round and just being able to take in that moment, it was only an hour but it’s an hour I’ll never forget.”

On his goal in the final, which saw the English defender head home Kieran Trippier’s corner, Burn said: “The first few days, my phone was getting constantly pinged with videos and remixes, when I was away with the England lads it was on TV all the time and I ended up having to switch the TVs off at the end because I was starting to get a bit embarrassed!”

“I will watch it forever, I’ll never tire of it – it was an amazing moment.”

Newcastle join race for Dibling despite huge price tag

Even after such a successful season, Newcastle are expected to bolster their squad in the summer, with Howe keen to push on from this year’s achievements and build more depth. Among those players thought to be interesting the Magpies is Southampton’s Tyler Dibling.

According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle are now one of several clubs keen on the English talent and are “expected to closely monitor” his situation at Southampton in the coming weeks, as the Saints brace for a significant transfer shake-up when they eventually get relegated back to the Championship.

Though previously Southampton put a price tag of £100 million on Dibling’s head, it’s thought that the asking price will significantly drop in the summer to ensure a sale.

Dibling has been one of Southampton’s standout players in an otherwise poor season for the club, and has been heavily lauded for his performances by former Premier League players Danny Murphy and Dion Dublin.

“It is the quality he has got – the belief in himself and the physical power. He just goes past people with ease. He has got a lovely left foot. He is very brave on the ball and his decision-making is good,” Murphy told BBC Sport of the 19-year-old in December.

“It is difficult to get too over the top with these young players, because he has just come on to the scene, but he is going to be something special.”

Dublin added: “Do you know what it is? I don’t want to put any pressure on him, but he plays his game like Cole Palmer, doesn’t he? He plays free and easy, and he gets himself into good positions, rolls players and takes the ball well.”

Blackburn Rovers want to beat Tony Mowbray to seal "quality" free signing

Blackburn Rovers are looking to sign a “quality” new forward on a cut-price transfer as they aim to pip former boss Tony Mowbray to a deal.

Blackburn Rovers racing Mowbray to sign Bobby Wales

According to Football Insider reporter Pete O’Rourke, Blackburn Rovers want to sign Kilmarnock forward Bobby Wales at the end of the campaign on a free transfer when his contract expires.

It is stated that Rovers and West Brom are ‘racing’ to secure Wales’ services as they look at ‘potential long-term options to develop and potentially move on for a significant profit’.

Wales has caught the eye of a number of Championship clubs, but it is only Rovers and the Baggies who are named in the update. Aged 19, Wales is a versatile centre-forward who, after scoring 12 goals in 27 appearances on loan at Alloa Athletic, has featured regularly in 2024/25.

Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes has previously called Wales a player with “quality” and an attacker who has “composure”.

“When we’re looking for a bit of calmness, quality and a bit of composure, I thought Bobby Wales gave us that. It’s a fantastic finish and good on him. We tried to be brave and keep as much attacking threat on the pitch as possible.”

McInnes added: “Bobby still has things he has to improve at. He’s an honest boy and we have conversations. With his back to goal he can still be better but in terms of finding space and manufacturing chances for himself, he’s got that in him.”

He earns more than Ndiaye: Everton must axe Thelwell's "disaster" signing

Everton have undergone an incredible transformation since David Moyes was placed at the wheel, driving up the Premier League table, away from the danger zone and toward the comfy security of mid-table.

But Moyes isn’t going to stop there. He won the Conference League with West Ham United, remember, led the Hammers through three successive campaigns on the continent.

But Merseyside is his home, Everton his club, and he wants to get them back on their perch, having struggled to impress for so long.

With The Friedkin Group replacing Farhad Moshiri at the head of the table, Moyes has been told he will have money to spend this summer, with Kevin Thelwell also exiting his role as Director of Football at the end of the term, succeeded by Leeds United’s Angus Kinnear.

Thelwell has helped to guide Everton through a turbulent period, and though he had his ups and downs, he can leave with his head held high after a promising final transfer window in 2024.

Everton's recent transfer business

Everton emerged from the 2023/24 campaign bruised but not broken. Financial breaches had allowed PSR to clamp down on Merseyside and extract eight hard-earned points from Sean Dyche’s squad, but this wasn’t enough to send them spinning to the second tier.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Thus, spending was always going to be difficult, but the sales of Amadou Onana, Ben Godfrey and homegrown Lewis Dobbin generated finances in the £70m ballpark, allowing for several deals that needed to hit the mark.

Jake O’Brien has come into his own at right-back since Moyes took to the helm, while Orel Mangala was excellent before cruelly seeing his season ended prematurely in January due to injury. He’s a loanee, but Everton have the option to sign him permanently.

Jesper Lindstrom hasn’t been brilliant on the right flank, yet to score, but at least he’s only on loan – and has provided something of a steady and industrious outlet.

Then there’s Iliman Ndiaye, signed from Marseille for £15m. Pure magic on the alternate wing, notching eight goals from 28 matches across all competitions. He’s played 24 times in the Premier League in the Toffees, but three of his six strikes came in the five appearances under Moyes’ leadership.

Thelwell did his best and fans have been receptive to his efforts, thankful for them. However, that’s not to say he invariably hit the mark when shopping, with Everton still needing to get rid of his worst signing despite the flop last kicking a ball for the Blues in 2023.

Thelwell's worst Everton signing must go

Everton have missed the mark on more than a few occasions in the 12 years since Moyes left for Manchester United, picked as Sir Alex Ferguson’s heir.

While he hasn’t been the most costly blunder, Neal Maupay’s got to be down at the nadir, certainly one of Thelwell’s biggest misfires during his time at the decision table.

Everton striker Neal Maupay.

After several decent Premier League campaigns in Brighton, Frank Lampard’s Everton moved to sign Maupay for a £15m fee, but his time at the club quickly devolved into a nightmare.

Maupay bagged just the one goal across 32 appearances in all competitions for Everton. Notorious for his reputation as a wind-up merchant, the French striker endured his most pitiful spell by the banks of the River Mersey.

His revival at Brentford further frustrated the Everton fanbase, but not nearly as much as his remarks last year: “Whenever I’m having a bad day, I just check the Everton score and smile.” A brazen thing to say given he’s still on the books.

With four goals and four assists apiece in Ligue 1 this season, starting only 12 matches under Roberto De Zerbi, Maupay is enjoying something of a renaissance – but that doesn’t mean he’s got a future on Merseyside.

Earning around £48k per week, the 28-year-old Everton player is still earning more than Ndiaye (£45k-per-week), emphasising the woe that cannot be shaken from this deal-that-shouldn’t-have-been.

While Marseille are likely to be covering a portion – if not all – of his salary – it still represents a hefty pack packet that was agreed upon when Everton initially welcomed him to the club with high hopes that he would become their abiding talisman.

Marseille have the option to keep Maupay at the Stade Vélodrome for about £3m, which would be decent business if Everton succeed in recouping at least something for one of their most infamous modern players.

Perhaps Thelwell orchestrated one last piece of good business in the Frenchman’s loan package. Without question, though, Maupay’s signing was a “disaster” – a sentiment shared by journalist Paul Brown – and those of an Everton persuasion just want him off the books.

Everton gem left for £2m, now he's worth more than Branthwaite & Richarlison

It is fair to say, Everton have not been renowned within the Premier League for being the best at recruitment over the last decade.

Huge fees have been paid for players such as Yannick Bolasie, Morgan Schneiderlin, Davy Klaassen, Cenk Tosun, Yerry Mina, André Gomes, Jean-Philippe Gbamin, Moise Kean, Allan, and many, many more, with the vast majority, if not all of those, offering very little return on investment.

Everton squad vs Southampton

However, the Toffees did have a genuinely top-class Premier League full-back on their hands, whom they decided to let go for just £2m.

That’s proven to be one of the Blues’ biggest mistakes in the market given their options on the right and left side of defence now.

How Everton's full-backs are performing in 2024/25

Last Saturday night’s 1-1 draw with Wolves at Molineux, in which Jack Harrison was on target, extended Everton’s unbeaten streak to eight Premier League games, with David Moyes propelling them away from danger and up to 15th.

Everton managerDavidMoyescelebrates after the match

Nevertheless, as the Toffees prepare to move into their brand-new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock in August, they have a poor squad, with former England midfielder Karen Carney telling the Guardian she believes the club’s ‘long-term strategy’ should remain under scrutiny.

This lack of quality certainly extends to the full-back positions where, as outlined by Patrick Boyland of the Athletic, Moyes has a selection of imperfect options, so let’s assess these players.

As the table shows, two of Everton’s full-backs are both in their mid-to-late 30s and out of contract this season, with both Nathan Patterson and Séamus Coleman making very few appearances this season due to injuries.

mathew-mallon-seamus-coleman-everton-opinion-premier-league

This has left Ashley Young, who’ll celebrate his 40th birthday in July, and Vitaliy Mykolenko as the first-choice options, even though Boyland of the Athletic described the Ukrainian as ‘limited’ and ‘unspectacular’, hence why Jake O’Brien, a centre-back by trade, has been deployed on the right in recent weeks.

Mykolenko’s lack of forward threat is in complete contrast to another left-back, on Everton’s books until quite recently, now considered one of the best in the Premier League.

Ex-Everton full-back now thriving in the top-flight

Antonee Robinson joined Everton’s academy at the age of 11, making 27 appearances at U21 level for the Toffees, but never handed his first-team debut, loaned out to both Bolton Wanderers and then Wigan Athletic, before joining the Latics permanently in 2019 for a reported fee of only £2m.

The left-back made 65 appearances for Wigan across two seasons, catching the attention of Serie A giants AC Milan, seemingly set to make a £6m move to San Siro in January 2020, especially considering he travelled to Italy for a medical.

However, speaking on Ben Foster’s podcast, Robinson revealed that the move fell through because, during his medical, it was discovered that he was having ectopic heartbeats.

That prevents him from playing in Serie A, given that the Italian authorities are ‘very stringent’ when it comes to heart health, following the high-profile and tragic deaths of both Davide Astori and Piermario Morosini.

Instead, six months later, he moved to Fulham for £2m, paying his release clause following Wigan’s relegation, while Everton attempted to re-sign him, intending to then sell him straight away to make a quick profit, which Robinson himself said he “wasn’t having that”.

Fulham full-back Antonee Robinson

Now 27, the full-back has made 180 appearances for the Cottagers, featuring in each of their last 60 Premier League fixtures, starting all but one of these matches.

Robinson’s performances have been earning rave reviews, with Jeff Rueter and Andy Jones of the Athletic labelling him the ‘best left-back in the Premier League’, while David O’Brien of BBC Sport describes his displays as ‘outstanding’.

Meantime, Dom Smith of the Evening Standard notes that he has been ‘brilliant’, with Fadumo Olow of Sky Sports praising his ‘speed, defensive resilience, and attacking contribution’.

So, let’s take a look at his statistics this season.

The most eye-catching of the statistics in the table above is the fact Robinson has ten Premier League assists to his name, only Mohamed Salah has more, which is not bad for a full-back.

This has also seen Robinson earn international recognition, named United States men’s national team player of the year for 2024, having won his 50th cap for the USA against Jamaica in November, very much the undisputed first-choice for Mauricio Pochettino ahead of a World Cup on home soil.

Fulham'sAntoneeRobinsonin action with Arsenal's William Saliba

Football Transfers believe Robinson’s current value to be around £31m, which for context, is a higher valuation than anyone in the current Everton squad, even Beto and Jarrad Branthwaite and higher than £29m-rated Richarlison, a man sold by Everton for £60m.

Meanwhile, amidst interest from Liverpool, Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider reports Fulham would only be willing to sell for around £50m.

Thus, Everton must regret letting the American slip through the net, both when they initially sold him and then when they made a seemingly half-hearted attempt to bring him back to Merseyside.

James Rew, Josh Davey complete turnaround as Somerset skittle Notts

James Rew notched his fourth LV= Insurance County Championship century of the season to help Somerset complete a 399-run rout of Nottinghamshire inside three days at Taunton. The 19-year-old wicketkeeper hit a career-best 123 not out as his side ran up 514 for 8 declared in their second innings to set their opponents an unlikely victory target of 492. George Bartlett, unbeaten on 109 overnight, fell for 134, just three short of his career-best score, while Kasey Aldridge weighed in with 50. Lyndon James had the best bowling figures for Notts with 2 for 64 from 18 overs. The visitors then slumped to 92 all out in their second innings, Josh Davey taking 4 for 17, to suffer the heaviest Championship defeat by a margin of runs in their history. They took three points from the game, while their opponents claimed 19.Somerset began the day on 268 for 4, knowing that the second new ball was just an over away. Any hopes Notts had of using it to reestablish their first day advantage soon disappeared.Bartlett and Rew, who set out on 17, batted confidently through the opening hour, taking few risks and eliminating the errors that had cost Somerset dear in their first innings. They had taken their fifth-wicket stand to 89 and the total to 320 when Bartlett, who had begun his innings with his team 43 for 2, was bowled by Dane Paterson, having faced 265 balls and hit 14 fours and a six.Rew has demonstrated a passion for batting long in red-ball cricket since first breaking into Somerset’s side last season. The young left-hander reached a typically unflurried fifty off 105 deliveries and played through the morning session without alarm.By lunch, he had moved to 60 and the lead was 342. Aldridge was on 17 and the afternoon session saw the pair build another substantial stand. Rew unleashed sixes over long-on and midwicket off Matt Carter, whose offspin posed as little threat as the seamers on what was looking a very flat pitch.Aldridge took the lead past 400 with a cover-driven boundary off Brett Hutton before Rew brought up the fifth first-class hundred of his short career off 172 balls, with 10 fours and 2 sixes.Aldridge has grown in confidence with the bat this season. He went to fifty off 88 balls, but was then bowled by James, having hit 5 fours. By then Somerset had posted 447 for 6 and their lead had grown to 424.It was then just a case of when skipper Tom Abell would choose to declare. By the time he did, Craig Overton and Matt Henry had warmed up for their bowling duties with some lusty blows, Henry clearing the ropes twice, while the ever-vigilant Rew had extended his rock solid innings to span 216 balls and just over four-and-three-quarter hours.Tea was taken before Notts began their mammoth task. It became even more mountainous when Haseeb Hammed was run out without scoring, sent back attempting a single to backward point and undone by Bartlett’s direct hit.It was 2 for 2 when Henry, bowling around the wicket, jagged one into left-hander Ben Slater’s pads to pin him lbw and 10 for 3 when Matthew Montgomery edged a defensive shot off Overton to Aldridge at second slip.Notts captain Steven Mullaney found himself walking to the crease at 14 for 4 after Joe Clarke had been snapped up at second slip by Overton to give Henry his eighth wicket of the match. The extra pace of Somerset’s opening bowlers was making the pitch look very different. And when Josh Davey replaced Overton, his first over saw James edge a drive to Tom Lammonby at third slip. Henry, whose bowling on the second morning had changed the course of the game took a rest having taken 2 for 19 from eight overs and his replacement, Aldridge, soon had Mullaney caught behind for 23 to make it 62 for 6.Hutton sportingly walked when inside-edging Davey to wicketkeeper Rew, who claimed another victim when Tom Moores, on 24, nicked a ball from Aldridge. Davey then cleaned up Jake Ball and Dane Paterson to spark joyous celebrations among home supporters.
