Dwayne Bravo has retired from the IPL as a player, and taken over a position as the bowling coach at Chennai Super Kings. L Balaji, Super Kings’ bowling coach till last season, has taken a break for one year for what the franchise called “personal commitments”, but will be involved with the Super Kings Academy.”I’m looking forward to this new journey because it’s something I see myself doing after my playing days is fully over,” Bravo, 39, said in a franchise statement. “I enjoy working with bowlers, and it’s a role I’m excited about. From player to coach, I don’t think I have to adjust much, because while I’m playing, I always work with bowlers and try to come up with plans and ideas on how to have that one step ahead of the batsmen.Related

“The only difference is I will no longer be standing at mid-on or mid-off! I never thought I would be the leading wicket taker in the history of IPL. But I’m just happy to be a part of IPL history!”Bravo has played the IPL every year since it started in 2008 except in 2017, when an injury prevented him from turning out for Gujarat Lions. He had first been signed up by Mumbai Indians in 2008, and was with the team for three seasons before being bought by Super Kings at the 2011 auction. When Super Kings were suspended for two seasons – 2016 and 2017 – Bravo was picked by Lions, before being retained by Super Kings in 2018.He finished with 183 wickets, the highest wicket-taker after 15 seasons of IPL, 13 more than the second-placed Lasith Malinga, and 17 more than the next active bowler with the most success: Yuzvendra Chahal. Bravo’s wickets came at an economy rate of 8.38 over 158 innings in 161 games, with a best of 4 for 22. He also scored 1560 runs at a strike rate of 129.57.One of the great death bowlers in the T20 game, Bravo bowled 1115 balls [36% of all his deliveries] between overs 17 and 20 and took 102 wickets in the phase. No-one else has bowled as many deliveries in the last four overs [Jasprit Bumrah is next with 1026] or taken as many wickets [Lasith Malinga is second on 90].A part of West Indies’ golden generation of T20 superstars, which won the T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016, Bravo joins his long-time international team-mate into IPL retirement, while getting into coaching roles with their teams. Pollard announced his retirement as a player on November 15, and has joined Mumbai Indians, the team he was with throughout his career in the IPL, as a batting coach.Dwayne Bravo won the IPL thrice with Super Kings, in 2011, 2018 and 2021•BCCI

Like Pollard, Bravo hasn’t quit as a player altogether. He is currently playing in the Abu Dhabi T10 with Delhi Bulls and has also been signed up by MI Emirates for the inaugural ILT20 in the UAE next year, where Pollard will be his captain. He was one of eight players Super Kings released by the retention deadline last month. At the time, though, it seemed like they might buy him back at the next auction, scheduled for December 23, as they had in 2021.With Super Kings, the team he became an integral part of – synonymous almost – over the years, Bravo played 144 matches, picking up 168 wickets and scoring 1556 runs. He was involved in three of their four IPL triumphs – in 2011, 2018 and 2021; the only one he missed was in 2010, when he was still with Mumbai. While with Super Kings, he won the Purple Cap for the most wickets in 2013 (32 wickets) and 2015 (26 wickets). He remains one of two players – Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the other – to win the Purple Cap on two occasions.”He has been a crucial member of the Super Kings family for more than a decade, and we are excited to continue the association,” Kasi Viswanathan, the Super Kings chief executive, said. “Bravo’s vast experience will be of immense value to our players and support staff. We are confident that our bowling group will thrive under his guidance.”

Arsenal hit the jackpot on sensational star worth far more than Gordon

Arsenal came into this week on cloud nine.

Mikel Arteta’s side had just hammered Manchester City 5-1 at the Emirates and just about kept themselves in the Premier League title race for another week.

However, the double whammy of no signings on deadline day and another 2-0 humbling away to Newcastle United in the League Cup have sapped all the positive energy building around the club.

What made the defeat to the Toon all the more painful was that the difference between their frontline and the Gunners’ was so stark, with Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon running Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba ragged.

Interestingly, while the Englishman scored the second goal of the night and looked nigh unplayable, one of the Gunners’ starters is worth millions more than him.

Gordon's record against Arsenal

Prior to kick-off, it would be fair to say that most of the attention from fans and pundits alike was on the sensational Isak, which, considering his incredible tally of 19 goals and five assists this season and the constant links to Arsenal, made perfect sense.

Anthony Gordon

However, once the first ball was kicked, it became instantly apparent that Gordon would be just as much of a problem for Arteta’s men.

Alongside constantly beating Jurrien Timber down the Toon’s left, the former Everton gem was also in the perfect place to exploit Fabian Schar’s interception of David Raya’s hospital pass to Declan Rice early in the second half, giving the hosts an unassailable lead.

The 23-year-old has become a real problem for the North Londoners in recent seasons, scoring in the first leg, providing the assist for Isak’s goal in the league earlier this season and scoring the winner at home last year.

In all, the Liverpool-born dynmao has become an incredibly dangerous winger over the last couple of years and is more than deserving of his lofty valuation from Football Transfers, which goes up to €49.5m, or £41.4m.

However, even though Gordon tore Arsenal asunder on Wednesday night, one of their starting attackers is still worth millions more than him.

The Arsenal star worth millions more than Gordon

It’s no secret that Arsenal’s best attacker and most likely their best player overall is the sensational Bukayo Saka, but due to the hamstring injury he sustained away to Crystal Palace in December, the team had to do without him against Newcastle.

Following his incredible goal against Manchester City on the weekend, some were calling for Arteta to start Ethan Nwaneri in his place on Wednesday night, but the manager opted to go unchanged from the team who beat the Champions and started Gabriel Martinelli on the right, who is the man with a higher valuation than Gordon.

The 23-year-old winger joined the North Londoners from Brazilian outfit Ituano for just £6m in the summer of 2019, but according to Football Transfers, he is now worth up to a whopping €65m, which is about £54.3m, or a massive £12.9m more than the Englishman’s valuation.

Now, some of you may dispute this price tag as, over the last season and a half, the Guarulhos-born ace hasn’t been all that effective, racking up a haul of 13 goal involvements last year and 11 this year.

However, while that is a fair point to raise, the valuation is also likely taking into consideration his age and the fact that in the 22/23 campaign, he was practically “unplayable” at times, per pundit Owen Hargreaves.

For example, in 46 appearances that year, the “sensational” attacker, as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, scored 15 goals and provided six assists, which comes to an average of a goal involvement every 1.85 games.

Ultimately, the price from Football Transfers might still be too generous, but Martinelli is an undeniably talented footballer, and perhaps when the club finally add a new striker to the team, we might see him back at his best.

Man City hold talks to sign "incredible" goalkeeper to replace Ederson

Manchester City still have plenty of work to do under Pep Guardiola as the season nears a conclusion, but the 54-year-old already has an eye on potential arrivals at the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Manchester City's core of serial winners at a crossroads

Despite emerging as the Premier League title favourites at the beginning of the campaign, City lie 20 points behind leaders Liverpool and won’t be celebrating a record-shattering fifth English top-flight triumph come the close of play.

Enacting a mini-rebuild in January, Pep Guardiola brought in Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Nico Gonzalez, Vitor Reis and Juma Bah to ease the pressure on an underperforming squad containing a core of ageing serial winners that may be ready for a new challenge elsewhere come the summer.

ManchesterCity's Kevin De Bruyne celebrates scoring their second goal

Kevin De Bruyne has been heavily linked with a move to San Diego FC, while Kyle Walker departed for AC Milan last month and is likely to bring the curtain down on his spell permanently sooner rather than later.

In truth, some of Manchester City’s most-cherished heroes are now beginning to depreciate in value. That isn’t a criticism, but merely a reality as time can become a ruthless commodity if you aren’t careful.

That isn’t to say their ability to produce magic moments has waned. However, anyone who has watched the Citizens this term can understand that a mix of injury issues and inconsistent form has seeped away at their collective hunger to win another title.

Nothing lasts forever despite the level of sentiment attached to any situation. Still, Manchester City could be involved in a transfer saga that will attract global attention this summer.

Manchester City hold talks over potential Ederson successor

According to CaughtOffside, Manchester City have held talks over signing Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa as a potential replacement for Ederson, who could be set for a move to the Saudi Pro League this summer.

Last year, the Brazil international came close to sealing a switch to the Middle East and may see the opportunity open up again. In response, the Blues have held ‘initial’ discussions regarding the Swiss-born Portugal international, who has kept 15 clean sheets in 37 appearances this term across all competitions.

Man City hit the jackpot on £76m ace who has genuine Ballon d'Or potential

Referencing his one-on-one save to deny Benjamin Sesko during his side’s penalty shootout victory against Slovakia at Euro 2024, Roberto Martinez commended Costa’s ‘incredible’ reflexes to deny the RB Leipzig striker during extra-time.

Nevertheless, Ederson’s monumental contribution during Manchester City’s modern-day history has cemented a legacy few could replicate. During his eight-year spell between the sticks, the reigning English champions have won 18 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.

Understandably, he may have designs on a money-spinning move before the twilight of his career. Either way, Ederson would be an extremely difficult influence to replace inside the Etihad dressing room.

Emery must axe Ramsey to unleash Aston Villa’s next Morgan Rogers

Fresh off the back of a 2-1 triumph over Chelsea in the Premier League, Aston Villa will be looking to clinch back-to-back wins in the elite division when travelling to Crystal Palace later today.

That slim victory over Enzo Maresca’s Blues was Unai Emery’s first win in league action in five matches, with a worry that a defeat on the road at Selhurst Park will place the West Midlands side right back at square one.

Aston Villa manager UnaiEmery

On the flip side, another win would really put the Villans back in top-four contention, with the boss hopeful that Morgan Rogers can cause Oliver Glasner’s Eagles all sorts of bother tonight if back to his electric best.

Morgan Rogers' slight drop in form

It could be argued that the ex-Middlesbrough attacking midfielder has dropped off slightly in recent matches, with no goals or assists coming his way across his last six Premier League outings.

But, there were glimmers of what he is truly capable of in the 2-1 win over Chelsea, with all three of his dribbles successfully pulled off on the night, on top of valiantly winning seven duels.

Rogers wouldn’t be basking in the limelight come full-time, however, as Marco Asensio grabbed all the headlines from the number ten spot with the standout loanee’s two strikes securing the dramatic victory, as his late effort somehow beat a shaky Filip Jorgensen.

Both the England international and the Spaniard are likely to be nailed-on starters for the trip to the Eagles, but there could be a change to the line-up down the right flank, with Jacob Ramsey dropping to the substitutes bench for this ace to shine brightly once more.

Emery must unleash Aston Villa's next Rogers

Of course, ex-Real Madrid man Asensio wasn’t the only statement loan addition to the ranks towards the end of a hectic winter transfer window.

The other bold attacker who has now joined the ranks temporarily is Marcus Rashford, with the Manchester United outcast turned new Villa star putting in a stunning cameo off the bench versus the Blues to steer his team to a much-needed three points.

Rashford would walk off at the end of his 45-minute stint on the Villa Park turf with two sublime assists next to his name, with his vital contributions gifting Asensio his first two strikes in claret and blue too, which more than raised the spirits of the home masses.

As it happens, Emery could have the next Rogers on his hands with the “fantastic” Manchester-born forward – as he was labelled at full-time of the Chelsea win by pundit Jamie Redknapp – a similar style of player to the 22-year-old in terms of their tricky movements when bursting forward.

Rogers is the most similar player to Rashford in Europe’s big five leagues this season according to FBRef, and the numbers certainly showcase that.

Despite having his confidence knocked back at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim, it’s clear from the numbers above that Rashford is a top-quality attacker on his day, with his statistics very similar to that of Rogers over the last year even as his United career has been put on life support.

After all, the once-regular Three Lions international hasn’t fluked his bumper total of 138 goals and 63 assists from 426 appearances when back at the Theatre of Dreams, with potentially lots more to come from Rashford when donning his new colours.

Rodgers must now drop Kuhn to unleash Celtic ace who’s a "revelation"

Celtic suffered only their second defeat of the 2024/25 Scottish Premiership season when they travelled to Hibernian and lost 2-1 on Saturday.

The Hoops had only lost one of their opening 26 matches in the division, a 3-0 loss to Rangers at Ibrox, but were stunned by a first-half double from Josh Cameron.

Hibernian’s attacking midfielder got the better of Cameron Carter-Vickers to finish past Kasper Schmeichel for his first, before he beat Auston Trusty in the air to head in his second.

A second-half poacher’s finish from Daizen Maeda, who scored his 23rd goal of the season in all competitions, was not enough to spark a comeback for the league leaders.

The Japan international has been in sensational form in the current campaign, as shown by his incredible goal return, and he should, absolutely, be in the starting line-up this evening.

However, Brendan Rodgers must consider dropping German winger Nicolas Kuhn to the bench for this evening’s clash with Aberdeen at Paradise after his off-colour performance against Hibernian last time out.

Why Nicolas Kuhn should be dropped

There is no doubt that the former Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig youngster has enjoyed a sensational season at Parkhead in his first full year as a Hoops player.

The left-footed magician has racked up 18 goals and 12 assists in 37 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish giants, which shows that he has provided a regular threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals at the top end of the pitch for Rodgers.

Kuhn, who scored three goals in the club’s ten-match Champions League campaign, has been a revelation for the Bhoys and they may have to battle to keep hold of him in the summer if his impressive form attracts attention from clubs across Europe.

However, all of this does not mean that the 25-year-old star is immune to criticism or that he is undroppable. In fact, Rodgers should ruthlessly ditch the forward from the starting XI for tonight’s clash with Aberdeen after his display against Hibernian.

As you can see in the table above, Kuhn played the full 90 minutes last time out and struggled badly with his use of the ball in the final third against Hibs, as he did not cause many problems at all for the opposition defenders.

The Hibernian players found it far too easy to stop him, ending three of his four attempted dribbles, and Jordan Smith did not have to make a single save from the German attacker.

Kuhn has now scored one goal and provided zero assists in his last five matches in all competitions and should be dropped to the bench for tonight’s game to provide him with a rest ahead of the weekend.

Chalkboard

Despite being substituted at half-time in the loss to Hibernian, Rodgers should, however, keep Ireland international Adam Idah in the centre-forward position.

Why Adam Idah should start

Like Kuhn, the former Norwich City marksman endured a frustrating afternoon last time out in the Premiership, so much so that the manager opted to withdraw him from the action at the break.

Idah missed one ‘big chance’ and only completed two of his five attempted passes, without creating a chance for any of his teammates, in the first half before being taken off by Rodgers, as he failed to offer much to the team in the first half.

Despite that showing, the 6 foot 3 centre-forward should be provided with another chance to impress against Aberdeen this evening, as his recent form has been impressive – with five goals in six games before the loss to Hibs.

Idah is the only senior, recognised, centre-forward at the club, although Maeda can play there, after Kyogo Furuhashi’s move to Rennes in January, and Rodgers should hand him as many chances as possible to build his confidence and rhythm as the first-choice number nine.

So, instead of dropping Idah and Kuhn, the Hoops head coach should only ditch the German forward from the starting XI in order to bring Jota back into the side.

Why Jota should be unleashed

The January signing from Rennes, who returned to Parkhead 18 months on from his move to Al-Ittihad, should be brought back into the starting line-up against Aberdeen on the left wing this evening, with Idah in the middle and Maeda on the right.

Although it did not lead to any goals, the Portuguese speedster did provide a threat off the bench against Hibernian with one shot on target and two chances created – more than Kuhn managed in 90 minutes – in the second half.

The Celtic wizard, who was described as a “revelation” by Alex McLeish during his first spell at Parkhead, started the previous game against Bayern Munich in the Champions League and was incredibly unfortunate not to register an assist.

Jota created a ‘big chance’ for the team when he cut inside on the left flank and produced a fantastic cross for Kuhn, who brought the ball down and saw his weak cleared off the line.

As you can see in the table above, the former Benfica starlet has made a fast start to his return to the Premiership with two goals and two ‘big chances’ created in four outings.

His statistics in the league this season, as well as his form in his first two years at the club in the graphic above, show that he is a terrific option for Rodgers to call upon, and a player who could be perfect for Idah at the top end of the pitch.

The Irish centre-forward struggled against Hibernian but he did not play a single minute with Jota in that game, which is why the manager should unleash both of them from the start this evening to see how they fare alongside each other in the final third against Aberdeen.

De Bruyne's former Chelsea team-mate Florent Malouda has listed three players he believes would be ideal replacements for the legendary Belgian – stating Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White or Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz would be the 'obvious' answer, while he personally would target Aston Villa's Youri Tielemans. Wirtz is unlikely to end up in Manchester as he has instead reportedly agreed a deal with Bayern Munich.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

De Bruyne has become one of the world's best at City, notching 108 goals and 177 assists in 418 games for the club. Pep Guardiola's side have won it all during his time there, with De Bruyne an irreplaceable part of six Premier League title wins and the club's first-ever Champions League triumph in 2023.

  • WHAT MALOUDA SAID

Malouda said in an exclusive interview with Racing Tipster: "(City's) scouts can find treasures in a host of countries, but on European soil, Gibbs-White and Wirtz are the most obvious choices to replace Kevin De Bruyne.

"Manchester City will really struggle to replace De Bruyne. I don’t think City had prepared well enough for him reaching the end of his time at the Etihad. The squad is overcrowded in some places but not ready to replace him.

"I think they should go for a player who already has Premier League experience. I would. I would go for the Belgian player, Youri Tielemans, who is at Aston Villa. I think in the midfield at Manchester City, they need the kind of player he is."

Prithvi Shaw smashed his career-best score in first-class cricket – 240 not out off 283 balls – on the first day of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy game against Assam in Guwahati. The opener hit 33 fours and a six, adding 123 runs for the first wicket with Musheer Khan and an unbeaten 200 for the third with Ajinkya Rahane, as Mumbai went into stumps on 397 for 2. Shaw was severe on Roshan Alam, thumping the left-arm spinner for 76 runs at a run-a-ball.Related

This was Shaw’s first hundred in this season of the Ranji Trophy. He came into the game with just 160 runs in his previous seven innings at an average of 22.85 and high score of 68.Shaw has been omitted from various India squads in recent months. The 23-year-old last played for India in a T20I in July 2021, and has not been picked despite consistent scores in the domestic circuit. He was the second highest run-getter in this season’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, with 332 runs at a strike rate of 181.42 and a highest score of 134 against Assam. He had a middling Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring 217 runs in seven innings, but averages in excess of 50 in List A cricket.Shaw recently found support from former India batter Gautam Gambhir, who put the onus on coaches and selectors to guide him and keep him in their plans.”Someone like a Prithvi Shaw, the kind of start he had to his international career and the kind of talent he has, you back a player on talent,” Gambhir said. “Yes, you have to look at the upbringing as well – where he comes from and the challenges he’s had as well. It makes even more sense for the management and the selectors to keep him around the mix, and help him get on the right track.”If he’s willing to put in the hard yards – and I know how destructive he can be; if he can go on to win games for you, whether it’s trainers, management, head coach or chairman of selectors, all these guys should take the onus to try and get these young boys to walk on the right path.”

"Brilliant" £120k-p/w player left gutted as Newcastle reject bid for him

A “brilliant” Newcastle United player has been left fuming with the club’s decision to knock back a bid for him, a new report has claimed.

Newcastle book second Wembley trip in three years

Things are looking up at St. James’ Park right now, with Newcastle in a strong position to push for Champions League qualification, while they have also booked their place at Wembley for the second time in three years.

The Magpies will be hoping to right the wrongs of the 2023 EFL Cup final when they travel to the capital in March, with Eddie Howe’s side set to take on either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur.

Howe’s side defeated Arsenal 2-0 last night to rack up a 4-0 aggregate victory, with Alexander Isak running the Gunners’ defence ragged at times, although it was a solid all-round performance, with the defence deserving credit for keeping another clean sheet.

Kieran Trippier played the full 90 minutes and dealt with everything the game asked of him, however, a new report has suggested the right-back is extremely unhappy with the fact Newcastle have knocked back a loan bid from Galatasaray.

Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon celebrates scoring their second goal with KieranTrippier

Trippier was said to be open to an exit in the January transfer window, despite remaining an important player for Howe’s side, and his morale has been “seriously damaged” by the recent decision to turn down a bid.

The Turkish side wanted to sign the right-back on a straight loan deal, rather than including a buy option, which may be the reason the offer was deemed unsatisfactory by the Tyneside club.

Newcastle and PIF expected to pursue summer move for "incredible" £75m star

The Magpies are planning to spend big when the transfer market reopens.

By
Dominic Lund

Feb 5, 2025

With the Turkish transfer window still open for a few more days, the situation could still change, but it is now becoming more unlikely the 34-year-old will leave this winter.

Trippier could be a history-maker at Newcastle

If the report is to be believed, it is strange the England international is so determined to move to Galatasaray this winter, especially fresh off the back of last night.

The full-back is now just one game away from making history by helping Newcastle win their first major trophy since 1969, which would also be the second major honour of his career, having won the La Liga title with Atletico Madrid.

The £120k-per-week defender has not been as prominent a member of the first team as he would’ve liked to be this season, however, and he would stand a good chance of winning the Turkish title if he completed a move, with Galatasaray six points clear.

Although he has been lauded as “brilliant” by members of the media, the former Spurs man’s best days are arguably behind him, with Tino Livramento making the right-back position his own this season.

However, Trippier proved last night that he still has a lot to give, so it is probably a wise move to block his departure, particularly considering it is now too late to bring in a replacement.
