Simeone really wants Tottenham star with Atletico prepared to pay 8 figures

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has personally set his sights on signing a member of Ange Postecoglou's squad at Tottenham this summer.

Exits will be just as crucial as incomings amid the Premier League's clamp down on financial firepower, with Everton, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City all bearing the brunt of Profit and Sustainability sanctions after alleged breaches.

While Spurs are rumoured to be one of the sides sitting pretty in this regard, despite announcing a loss in their latest financial accounts, chairman Daniel Levy will be very eager to balance the books by offloading surplus assets when the window reopens.

Joe Rodon is apparently likely to join Leeds on a permanent deal, according to reports, while Levy is personally ready to accept a £15 million offer for Bryan Gil if clubs come calling for that amount.

Finding buyers for the plethora of senior Tottenham players out on loan will be a top priority, with club-record flop Tanguy Ndombele set to return from Galatasaray alongside others elsewhere like Sergio Reguilon, Djed Spence, Troy Parrott and Japhet Tanganga.

Alongside the players out on temporary spells elsewhere, members of Postecoglou's current crop like Gil, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso have all suffered from a serious lack of opportunities in the Tottenham starting eleven this season.

Hojbjerg's only started a handful of league matches, despite featuring in nearly every top flight encounter, while Lo Celso appears out of favour despite a brief run in the first team mid-season.

The latter has been heavily linked with an exit all season, with Sky Sports even claiming Xavi wanted to sign Lo Celso for Barcelona in January. However, it now appears another big name coach has the Argentine on his radar.

Simeone expresses desire to sign Lo Celso at Atletico

According to Tutto Juve this week, Atletico boss Simeone has expressed his desire to sign Lo Celso from Tottenham this summer, and the La Liga side already have a price in mind.

Giovani Lo Celso celebrates for Tottenham

It is believed they're willing to pay around £17 million to steal him away from N17, but it's unclear whether this is an offer they would accept. During Lo Celso's brief run in the team this season, Postecoglou did hold praise for the midfielder.

"Gio was great," said Postecoglou on Lo Celso one of his performances this season. "He's been great the last two or three weeks. With the amount of injuries we've had and absences we've had, we've needed everyone in the group and everybody who has come in has stepped up.

"Gio was very good today, not just with his work rate but you could see his quality on the ball. His passes through and the one through to Sonny was outstanding. We needed him today and we're going to need him going forward because Sonny goes away now, Biss goes away, Pape goes away. So I thought he was a good contributor."

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Senegalese forward scored his second goal of the 2024/25 season as he handed Chelsea the lead against Crystal Palace on Sunday at Stamford Bridge. In the 25th minute of the match, Noni Madueke initiated a quick counter-attack down the right flank before he found Cole Palmer with a through ball. The England international then squared the ball towards his left as Jackson found the back of the net with a simple tap-in.

After breaking the deadlock, the 23-year-old imitated Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec – while celebrating the goal. Dikec went viral for his relaxed style of competition which won him the silver medal at the 10m air pistol mixed team event at the Paris Olympics 2024.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Jackson, who joined the Blues from Villarreal last summer, enjoyed an impressive debut campaign at Stamford Bridge. He was the club's second-highest scorer after Cole Palmer with 17 strikes to his name across all competitions. The forward picked up where he left off last season as after scoring in Chelsea's big win over Wolves last week, he has again managed to find the back of the net against the Eagles.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

While the West London side finally announced Jadon Sancho's arrival from Manchester United on Sunday, the English winger was not included in Enzo Maresca's matchday squad. Sancho, though, was unveiled on the pitch before kick off.

Tottenham have sat down to discuss signing £26m ace likened to Gibbs-White

Tottenham have "sat down at the table" to discuss signing a £26 million player who's been called "similar" to Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White.

Spurs targeting new midfielder and attacker this summer

As reported by reliable media sources, like football.london correspondent Alasdair Gold, Spurs are targeting a new number six and attacker for Ange Postecoglou this summer.

Specific names are already being shortlisted ahead of the next transfer window, and there have been many mentioned this week alone. RB Leipzig ace Dani Olmo has played his way onto Tottenham's transfer agenda, among others, as the north Londoners seek more threatening options.

Tottenham have an option to make Timo Werner's signing permanent for around £15 million, but while the German has got off to a good start overall, some have expressed doubt over his ability to chip in significantly long-term.

"I’m sorry, he misses so many good chances. And those chances that he missed, they can change games. Technically, he’s one of the worst players in the Premier League. I’m going to say that, because I honestly believe that," said pundit Jay Bothroyd to Optus Sport in a harsh assessment of Werner.

“He doesn’t cross the ball well, he hits it as hard as he can across the face of the goal all the time. He never picks anybody out. His finishing’s poor. His passing’s poor.

“And yes, you can say that he’s effective. But then I’m saying, okay, he’s an athlete. In this day and age, I look at him and I say he’s effective because of his athleticism. As he gets older and he loses that athleticism, how effective is he going to be then?”

Fabrizio Romano also says Tottenham want a player who can add more goals and assists to Postecoglou's side, and one astute option could be Genoa's Albert Gudmundsson.

The Iceland international has bagged 13 goals and three assists in 30 Serie A starts under Albert Gilardino this term, leading to reported interest from N17.

Tottenham sit down to discuss signing Albert Gudmundsson

According to a report from Italy this week, specifically newspaper Tuttosport, Tottenham have "sat down at the table" to discuss signing Gudmundsson this summer, and so have Inter Milan.

However, they could be better placed to seal a move for the attacking midfielder than Inter, as agent Oscar Damiani told FCInterNews that Italian clubs most likely won't reach the potential £26 million asking price for Gudmundsson.

Called "similar" to Forest star Gibbs-White by Football Transfers, the 26-year-old has also been likened to Liverpool star Mohamed Salah by teammate Kevin Strootman.

“He reminds me of Salah when he was at Roma, in that every now and then he disappears. Much like Salah then, he would have four or five chances per match and only score at most one," said Strootman.

“They used to say that if Salah was more clinical, he would be playing for Liverpool, and that is exactly what happened. All joking aside, Gudmundsson is a devastating player and also an exemplary professional.”

Arsenal can solve Saka problem by unleashing £265k-p/w "game-changer"

It's been an unbelievable season for Arsenal so far this year, and with two games to go, there is a real chance the club could end its two-decade wait for a Premier League title.

Mikel Arteta has created a truly brilliant team that has pushed Manchester City all the way this season, although, based on recent news, the Gunners' upcoming game against Manchester United could be about to get a lot harder.

In his pre-match press conference on Friday, Arteta confirmed that star winger Bukayo Saka is a doubt for the game at Old Trafford.

While it's not the end of the world for the north Londoners, the Englishman is arguably the most essential player in the team, although there might be a way to solve the problem if he cannot play.

Bukayo Saka's importance to Arsenal this season

With Arsenal's impressive campaign this year, several starters could legitimately claim to be their most important player, such as Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, or even Ben White, but it's impossible to look past Saka.

In his 46 appearances this season, the Hale End superstar has scored 20 goals and provided 14 assists, meaning he is currently averaging a goal involvement every 1.35 games despite being just 22 years old.

Moreover, he isn't just the team's top goalscorer this season; he is also the top assist provider, showing just how essential he is to Arteta's system. To top it off, he has started 94% of Premier League games in 23/24.

Overall, the Ealing-born sensation is irreplaceable as an individual, but that doesn't mean there isn't a solution to this problem, a solution that could also give another star some much-needed game time.

The player to replace Saka

The man that could help Arteta solve this problem is Gabriel Jesus, as the former Manchester City ace has previous experience of playing out on the right.

In fact, while there isn't an enormous amount of data to base too much on, the £265k-per-week star actually has a better rate of return when starting out on the right than in any other position.

For example, in his 24 games on the right, he has scored eight goals and provided ten assists, meaning he averages a goal involvement every 1.33 games. In comparison, he averages a goal involvement every 1.6 games when starting in the middle and every other game when starting on the left.

The 27-year-old "game-changer", as described by Alan Shearer, would also benefit from more game time as he has been relegated to a bench role in the last few months, with Havertz firmly establishing himself as the number one striker.

Ultimately, with United likely to field a centre-back pairing of Casemiro and Jonny Evans, Arsenal should feel confident with whatever frontline they play with.

However, the prospect of Jesus and Leandro Trossard dancing around the Red Devils' defence alongside the marauding Havertz should put to bed any concerns Arteta had about missing Saka for this must-win clash.

Wolves enquire over £5k-p/w "monster" goalscorer who is cheaper than Broja

Wolves could be set to finally address their longstanding striker issues this summer, after making an enquiry about a goalscoring phenom.

O'Neil misses out on Broja

Wolves boss Gary O'Neil has done an excellent job in keeping his side well out of a relegation battle this season, steering them into the calm waters of Premier League midtable. But injuries have been a consistent problem, to the extent that young striker Leon Chiwome was promoted from the PL2 to start twice for O'Neil's side.

Wolves under Gary O'Neil Goals scored per game 1.51 Goals conceded per game 1.6 Win percentage 40% Points per game 1.37 O'Neil called for a striker to be signed in the January transfer window, but financial fair play issues meant that they couldn't get a deal over the line, with Chelsea attacker Armando Broja the man that they had set their sights on.‌“Finances are an issue. I was speaking to Chelsea about Armando Broja for a lot of the day.‌ We couldn’t afford to do it financially," O'Neil explained.“We weren’t able to go to the places others were. And that’s the position. It’s the position the club said they were in when they spoke to me. I was hopeful that clearing some wages would enable me to act. It turns out that wages weren’t a problem, the fees were."Eventually Broja moved to Fulham, where he has been starved of game time, and it has since emerged that Chelsea are looking to sell him this summer. But, having demanded a massive £50m for him in January, their stance is unlikely to have softened much and he would still be an expensive addition. Now, Wolves may have found a man available for much less. Wolves enquire for goalscoring machine

That comes in the shape of Union Saint-Gilloise striker Mohamed Amoura, who has been scoring goals for fun in Belgium's top flight this season. So far, the Algerian marksman has managed 23 goals and seven assists across all competitions, which includes 18 goals in the Pro League.

As per L'Equipe, Wolves are one of the clubs to have enquired about potentially signing him this summer, and he is set to be available for around 20m euros (£17m), which would make him a far cheaper option than a return for Broja, especially given his wages only amount to £5k-a-week currently. Club chief appears to admit Wolves are trying to sign "interesting" winger

He’s keen to keep hold of the Wolves target.

ByTom Cunningham May 3, 2024

Teammate Alessio Castro-Montes spoke in glowing terms about the goalscoring phenom, dubbing him "a monster in front of goal".

“He is really super fast, but his biggest advantage is his efficiency. He really is a monster in front of goal, even though he doesn’t even get that many playing minutes. In a match like today you can see his impact.”

The Old Gold would likely have to fight off significant competition for his signature, with Tottenham and Arsenal having both been linked with a move, while Liverpool are also thought to be keen.

But, should they do so, his arrival would ease the attacking woes that O'Neil has suffered this season, and set them up for a potential push for European football next year.

Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi has not taken in a club appearance since mid-June, when he left Tata Martino’s camp in Florida and linked up with the Argentina national team for Copa America duty. He lifted the trophy at the end of that competition, but suffered an unfortunate ankle injury in the final.

Messi has been eased back to fitness since returning to Chase Stadium, with no risks being taken, and Inter Miami have continued to fare admirably without him. Martino has, however, indicated that his talismanic No.10 could return to action against the Philadelphia Union on September 14.

GettyWHAT GRESSEL SAID

Argentina left Messi out of their latest World Cup qualification squad, giving him time to work on his recovery in the United States, and Gressel has told of welcoming the all-time great back: “It’s Lionel Messi, I don’t think I really need to say much on what contribution he brings here. We’ve been very good without him, now you add a player like him into this team, and I’m sure other teams are looking at that and are a little bit scared of us. He has a couple of weeks to get back to game fitness, and hopefully he can join us on the field for the next game.”

£22 million player asks to leave Tottenham as club make out-of-window offer

A £22 million player has now asked to leave Tottenham this summer, and it is believed that one club have already made an out-of-window offer for him.

Postecoglou rebuild needed as Spurs face crucial summer

After a phenomenal start to the 2023/24 Premier League season, manager Ange Postecoglou and co have crashed right back down to earth in the last month.

Ange and Levy hold internal Spurs talks as £13m Werner alternative emerges

The Tottenham chiefs are holding meetings over this summer window.

ByEmilio Galantini May 3, 2024

Reminded of the frailties which still very much exist in Spurs' eleven, their last three consecutive Premier League defeats to Newcastle United, Arsenal and Chelsea highlight that Postecoglou's got a lot of work to do ahead of 2024/2025.

"They didn't win individual battles, didn't win enough second balls, they were so passive, especially in the first half in a derby game where you have to win those battles, play forward and look to pass with a bit of urgency. They didn't do all the basics," said pundit Jamie Redknapp on Tottenham's defeat to Chelsea.

Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham

Tottenham 2-3 Arsenal

Newcastle United 4-0 Tottenham

Tottenham 3-1 Nottingham Forest

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

"When Ange took over, I was watching the football thinking, 'this is almost revolutionary'. You've got two men coming into midfield, the two full-backs looking fantastic, people playing at such a high level. But they've fallen off a cliff now. They've won two out of their last seven since they beat Aston Villa away in one of the best performances I've seen this season.

"The other thing, they've only played 37 games this year. They lost in the Carabao Cup in the second round and lost in the fourth round of the FA Cup to Manchester City. There's no fatigue involved. I look at the manager and he looks beaten."

With Champions League football looking like an ever-so-distant prospect as Aston Villa take full control of the race for fourth, the next summer transfer window will be crucial. Tottenham want to sign a new centre-back for Postecoglou, alongside a new striker and number six (Matt Law), and a few players could also go the other way.

Young forward Bryan Gil, who doesn't feature in Postecoglou's plans going by his lack of game time, is one man nominated for the axe. Feyenoord have been displaying serious interest in Gil, but the Eredivisie side are by no means alone.

Gil asks to leave Tottenham as Sevilla make proposal

According to Vamos Mi Sevilla FC, via Sport Witness, Gil has "requested" to leave Tottenham permanently, and Sevilla have made a proposal for the Spaniard.

richarlison-bryan-gil-tottenham-opinion

While the La Liga side can't afford to take him on an outright permanent deal, the offer they've made is one of a loan with the obligation to make it permanent next year.

Signed by Fabio Paratici for around £22 million from Sevilla in a part-exchange deal including Erik Lamela, it remains to be seen if the "very, very exciting" player can seal a move back to his former club.

Tim Paine: Australian cricket 'can get very excited' about Cameron Green

Tim Paine believes Australian cricket “can get very excited” at the potential of Western Australia allrounder Cameron Green, after having witnessed first-hand what the 21-year-old is capable of.Green was prevented from bowling for the majority of the 2019-2020 season due to back problems but is expected to be able to resume his full all-round role in time for this coming summer. His early numbers in first-class cricket are eye-catching with a batting average of 43.84 and bowling returns of 21.53.ALSO READ: Nathan Coulter-Nile and AJ Tye cut by Western Australia; Cameron Gannon joinsHe scored all three of his centuries last season – the most by any batsman in the 2019-20 Sheffield Shield – becoming just the second player after Doug Walters to have three hundreds and two five-wicket hauls before the age of 21. One of those centuries, an unbeaten 158, came against a Tasmania team featuring Paine, towards the back-end of last season. And the Australia Test captain also came up against Green with the ball in Perth earlier in the summer before the back problems intervened.”I don’t want to put too much pressure on him, but I think all Australian cricket fans can get very excited about the prospect of Cam Green,” Paine said. “I’ve played a few Shield games against him and the first one all the senior guys noticed him bowling first and we thought ‘geez he’s a bit quicker and a bit better than I thought he’d be’ and all the young blokes are saying ‘just wait until you see him bat’, and we thought ‘there’s no way he’s going to be able to bat like he bowls’ and then he came out and hit a hundred.”Australia have long-searched for an allrounder to balance the Test side, particularly on flatter pitches or overseas when two spinners could be required. Paine was able to study Green’s batting closely from behind the stumps, especially during the match in Hobart where he faced 366 balls across the two innings.”He’s an exceptional talent,” Paine said. “Certainly playing against him he was really impressive out in the middle, looked like he was in complete control of his game and really knew what he was trying to do, and to see him moving around the crease, there were a couple of little things I noticed when I was keeping against him where I thought ‘he’s pretty impressive’, not only is he talented, but he looks like he really knows what he’s doing. It’s an exciting thing for an Australian cricket fan to have someone like that on the horizon.”

In a recent feature for ESPNcricinfo, where two teams were selected for the hypothetical notion of Australia playing a Test and T20I on the same day, former Australia selector Greg Chappell picked Green in his 12-man Test squad.”To me, Cameron Green is the next superstar of Australian cricket,” Chappell said. “He is a genuine prospect with bat and ball, but I think his future is as a batsman who can offer some quality overs. Cameron is a batsman of rare talent. At 6ft 7in, he could become something very special. I would bat him at No. 6 to start with, but I reckon No. 4 is his long-term position. The sooner he gets to play at this level, the sooner he will become the player that he should be.”Australia won’t be picking their next Test squad until November at the earliest – they are due to play Afghanistan in Perth from November 21 – although there remains a change the limited-overs teams could still return to action with a tour to England in September. If the T20 World Cup is postponed, as looks all-but certain, and a rescheduled IPL played in the same time frame, there is the likelihood that some of Australia’s contracted players will be absent from domestic cricket. But Paine believes that the national set-up will be well prepared by being able to have a long pre-season with Covid-19 restrictions lifting in most of the country.”The next Test we’ll play is our summer, so we’re really lucky here that we’ll have a pre-season, all our nationally contracted players have gone back to their states, which is a great thing for both them and all our young domestic players in the country to be learning off Steve Smith, Marnus [Labuschagne], Pat Cummins and all these guys,” he said. “You get a mental freshen up, which your David Warners and Pats and Steves never get, but also these guys are getting to do a full pre-season, getting their bodies right, which they haven’t been able to do for a number of years.”I think our Australian cricketers will be as well prepared as they’ve ever been come their first game, whether that’s Test cricket, one-day cricket or T20.”
