Rangers on alert over signing "quality" player on a free after new update

Rangers could have just been handed a boost in their transfer planning this summer following the latest update surrounding a star they have held a long-term interest in.

Philippe Clement's side set for change

Currently neck and neck in the Scottish Premiership with their Glasgow rivals, Rangers will have their full attention on finishing the season strongly, knowing that they still have two Old Firm clashes this term, which could have major ramifications for where the title eventually ends up.

Beyond that, however, there is plenty of uncertainty around the Scottish giants, with a major squad rebuild set to occur.

"Been a development" – Rangers injury potentially much worse than expected

A Gers star could miss a large chunk of the title run-in.

ByBen Browning Mar 28, 2024

Kemar Roofe, John Lundstram, Ryan Jack, Leon Balogun, Borna Barisic and Jon McLaughlin will all be out of contract come the end of the campaign, and although Philippe Clement is keen to keep some of them, it is out of his hands at this point, with all six free to negotiate with clubs from around Europe.

Also among those who could leave this summer are goalkeeper Jack Butland and captain James Tavernier, both of whom have been linked with moves away from Ibrox ahead of the new season, while Ben Davies and Sam Lammers are also free to leave should offers come in for their services.

Jack Butland

It means that attention will have to turn to incomings, with plenty of gaps to fill in the Gers squad ahead of the new season. The latest update from the continent may have handed Clement and co. a boost, though.

Potential Rangers boost over free transfer

FC Twente have confirmed that full-back Gijs Smal will leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season.

"Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Joshua Brenet and Gijs Smal have expiring contracts. Gis Smal has indicated that he will not renew his contract at FC Twente and will, in principle, leave the club at the end of the season", they wrote in a club statement.

Rangers and Celtic have both been linked with a move for the Dutchman, and he has been mooted as the replacement at Ibrox for Barisic, who is among those likely to leave this summer as things stand.

He has plenty of admirers in Scotland already, with Rangers Journal founder Kai Watson describing his ability to provide "quality deliveries" among other things.

“Smal would provide quality deliveries from the left-hand side while also being willing to actually run to the byline. He’s 5 years younger than Barisic and offers a bit more pace and aggression on that side,” Watson explained.

It had previously been reported that Smal was on the verge of agreeing a move to Feyenoord when his contract ended, but with no official confirmation yet forthcoming, Rangers will be hoping that they can convince him into an 11th-hour change of heart.

Everton now forced to accept offers for "terrific" player who Dyche loves

After facing the consequences for their financial wrongdoings, Everton are now set to suffer once more when the transfer window opens in a move that will arguably weaken Sean Dyche's side.

Everton transfer news

It's a big few months for the Toffees. Not only must they comply with the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules, but they must also ensure that Dyche's squad are ready to push past the fight for relegation and into the comforts of mid-table both this season and next. Of course, they would have been well on course for survival by now and in those aforementioned mid-table places if it wasn't for two deductions culminating in the loss of eight points.

Everton made to regret signing flop whose value has plummeted £17.5m

He’s only shown glimpses since his move to Goodison Park.

ByEthan Lamb Apr 19, 2024

With 777 Partners yet to complete their takeover too, Everton may need to be more careful than ever with their spending, which has seen them linked with free deals for both Ben Johnson and Wilfred Ndidi in two deals that could represent wise business. Welcoming Ndidi would be particularly impressive, especially after the latest Amadou Onana update.

According to Sport in Spain, Everton have been left with no choice but to sell Onana this summer in an attempt to balance the books at Goodison Park. The Toffees have 'finally given in' amid reported interest from Barcelona and Chelsea in a deal that could be worth up to €70m (£60m) in the coming months.

If Everton saw their price tag matched this summer, then Onana's sale could go a long way towards avoiding another FFP punishment next season, but the sale may still leave Dyche frustrated nonetheless.

The former Burnley boss has been full of praise for the midfielder during his time at Everton, including when he told the club's official website back in December: "I thought Amadou [Onana] was terrific today, not just his goal but the ugly side of the game with his hard work and positional sense.

"There was a lot to adapt to and they've had almost no time, we had a 10-minute walkthrough so for them to take it on like that today with that performance, particularly in the second half in a different way with control and tactical understanding to see it through, was very, very pleasing."

"Terrific" Onana will need replacing

It's all well and good if Everton manage to balance the books, but that won't take away from the need to replace Onana this summer. Recent links to Ndidi is a positive sign that those at Goodison Park will do just that, however, in a move that wouldn't cost them a transfer fee and could hand Dyche an adequate option in the middle of the park.

So, whilst the idea of selling Onana this summer sounds far from ideal, Everton may be better off in the long-term if it means they avoid another point deduction next season and bring a player in like Ndidi as a far cheaper alternative to the Belgian.

Sean Williams' century makes it Zimbabwe's day

Sean Williams produced a consummate captain’s knock, scoring his second Test century, and Zimbabwe, with cameos from Brendan Taylor and Sikandar Raza, seized control of proceedings on the first day of the second Harare Test. While Williams’ dismissal in the final hour of play gave a slightly more balanced look to proceedings, the hosts still ended the day on 352 for 6 with Regis Chakabva and debutant Tinotenda Mutombodzi at the crease, their partnership unbeaten on 28.For Sri Lanka, on a flat, dry surface that offered little assistance to their trio of seamers, it was the dependable Suranga Lakmal that was nevertheless the catalyst for their most incisive period of play, as he ended the day with two wickets. Dhananjaya de Silva too picked up a pair.Williams was aided for a majority of his stay by Raza, the pair coming together with Zimbabwe in a spot of bother at 133 for 4. Lakmal’s probing lines and ability to seam the ball both ways caused them a few problems early on, but once they weathered that storm they found runs easier to come by. Both Williams and Raza utilised the sweep to good effect, while they were also unafraid to use their feet to smother spin and play down the ground. It helped that early on in their partnership – which would eventually yield 159 runs – Lasith Embuldeniya was forced off the field, having copped a blow on his bowling hand attempting to take a difficult chance offered up by Raza. Embuldeniya would later return to bowl, seemingly without much discomfort.During this period, it was Williams who was by far the more aggressive of the two, regularly using his feat against the spinners, with the nature of the pitch such that anything full was there to be driven. Williams lofted Embuldeniya down the ground for six more than once in this manner.Raza for his part was more selective. Though an entertaining period of play did see him attempt a series of pulls off Lahiru Kumara to varying degrees of success, culminating in one being creamed for six over the midwicket boundary. It was Kumara, however, that got the last laugh, as one pull too many saw Raza find an onrushing Angelo Mathews in the deep, who completed a good diving catch.Williams though would continue to hold firm putting on 32 more runs with Chakabva, before a tired attempt at a slog sweep against Dhananjaya saw his stumps rattled, bringing a disappointing end to what had been an outstanding innings.Brendan Taylor sweeps one fine•Associated Press

Earlier, Brendan Taylor’s run-a-ball 62 had resurrected Zimbabwe’s innings after they had crawled to 50 for 2 at the end of the 20th over, in danger of squandering the best of the batting conditions. Off just his sixth delivery Taylor signalled his intent, coming down the track to Embuldeniya, and lofting him for six over long-off.On a pitch that had shown some bite and turn, most of the Zimbabwean batters had for the most part done well to prevent Sri Lanka’s spinners from settling. It was first Craig Ervine, then Taylor, and eventually Williams who took it upon themselves to play the role of aggressor, either coming down the track, sweeping or cutting. It didn’t help Sri Lanka’s cause that the pitch seemed to slow quite a bit as the day wore on with the seamers gradually losing their potency. It raised the question as to whether the think tank had missed a trick in choosing to bring in an extra seamer in Vishwa Fernando, as opposed to the spin of Lakshan Sandakan. It also looked to be a concerted plan from Zimbabwe to target Sri Lanka’s spinners – and Embuldeniya in particular – as Ervine, in his brief cameo had also launched the young left-arm spinner down the ground for six and a four.Ervine had looked in good touch, but was dismissed after failing to read a slider from Dhananjaya that caught the inside edge of his bat on the way to short leg.Prince Masvaure had nicked a wide one from Kumara through to the keeper, to give Sri Lanka their first breakthrough of the day.Despite the fall of wickets, Taylor would proceed to sweep and reverse sweep frequently as Zimbabwe continued their counter-attack. This tactic, though, may well have been his downfall had the umpire not failed to spot Taylor gloving a reverse sweep to the keeper when he was on 7. With DRS not available for this series, Zimbabwe’s most experienced player survived.Taylor fell shortly after the lunch interval, when Lakmal was causing all sorts of trouble. Unerring in his examination of the area outside off stump, Lakmal would tail a fuller delivery in towards leg stump, catching Taylor flush on the pads.Kevin Kasuza, meanwhile, had looked uncertain throughout his innings, which ended with an ill-advised leave off Lakmal as the ball to jagged back in from outside off and hit the top of off stump. At that point Sri Lanka’s bowlers would’ve been looking to scythe through Zimbabwe’s middle order, but Williams and Raza had other ideas.

Leeds have held talks with agent over move to sign "deadly" 22-goal forward

It is hard for Leeds United to make concrete plans for their upcoming business in the summer transfer window when they do not know what division they will be in.

The Whites are still competing to secure promotion back to the Premier League, having been relegated from the top flight at the end of last term, and are currently third in the table.

Leicester City and Ipswich Town are ahead of them as it stands, with two points separating the three teams and three matches left to play in the regular season.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

Daniel Farke's side will have to go through the lottery of the play-offs if they fall short of the top two, and the German boss has no prior experience of that route – having gone up automatically twice whilst with Norwich City.

Leeds, meanwhile, are already eyeing up a possible signing to bolster their attack should they return to the Premier League…

Leeds hold talks over striker signing

According to reports in Turkey, as relayed by Sport Witness, the Whites are keen on a summer swoop for Fenerbahce centre-forward Michy Batshuayi if they are in the top flight next term, which is why promotion is key in this particular deal.

The report claims that the Yorkshire-based outfit have made their first move to secure his services by holding a meeting with his representatives.

Leeds, who have also been linked with Southampton's Che Adams this month, have held talks with his agents to learn about his current situation and assess the viability of a transfer to Elland Road at the end of the season, should they make it out of the Championship.

Michy Batshuayi in action for Fenerbahce.

Fenerbahce have extended the Belgium international's contract through to the summer of 2025, and it remains to be seen how much they would demand from Farke's side to allow him to leave on a permanent deal.

It states that the Turkish giants want to hold talks with the player's representatives in an attempt to extend his deal by a further two years, whilst Leeds will be hoping that their interest puts an end to that idea.

Why Leeds should sign Michy Batshuayi

Farke may want to bring the 30-year-old to Yorkshire to be an upgrade on current number nine Patrick Bamford, who has struggled at times this season.

He has not provided a reliable presence in the final third with his wasteful finishing at times. His return of seven goals from an xG (Expected Goals) of 10.2 means that he has underperformed his expected tally by 3.2.

Batshuayi's form for Fenerbahce this season suggests that the experienced forward could provide more quality at the top end of the pitch if he can carry his current finishing rate over to Leeds.

The former Chelsea forward was once hailed as "deadly" by journalist Josh Bunting during his time with Borussia Dortmund, and that still rings true in the present day.

As you can see in the table above, Batshuayi has been an efficient finisher with 14 goals from an xG of 12.69 in the Super Lig and Europa Conference League combined this term, to go along with two goals in five European qualifiers and six goals in three domestic cup matches.

Career-best 6 for 16 'a fantastic feeling' for Sandeep Lamichhane

His effort helped Nepal bowl USA out for just 35, the joint-lowest total in ODIs

Peter Della Penna in Kathmandu12-Feb-2020Nepal’s teenage legspinner Sandeep Lamichhane played a central role in a history-making day at Tribhuvan University Stadium on Wednesday morning, turning in the second-best ever figures by an Associate bowler in ODIs. His career-best 6 for 16 in just six overs helped Nepal bowl USA out for just 35. It was the joint-lowest total in ODIs and the shortest completed innings in ODI cricket, wrapped up in just 12 overs.”It’s a fantastic feeling to be on that list [of best figures in ODI cricket],” Lamichhane said after the match that lasted less than two hours. “But if you talk about 6 for 16, it’s for the team and the team is important for us. Two wins out of four [matches], still 32 games to go [in the World Cup League 2] and beating the top team in the league so far, I think it’s a positive sign for us.”USA had entered the ODI tri-series in Nepal – that also includes Oman – as the table leaders in the seven-team WCL 2 tournament that continues until 2022. But the USA team leaves Kathmandu licking their wounds with four consecutive losses. Oman won their four matches to jump over USA to be at the top of the table. It also continues a historic trend of Nepal spinners having tremendous success against USA. On USA’s last visit to Nepal in 2010 for the WCL Division 5, teenage left-arm spinner Rahul Vishwakarma took 7 for 15 to lead a win for Nepal in the tournament final. Left-arm spinner Basant Regmi also took back-to-back five-wicket hauls against USA in twin victories at 2012 WCL Division 4 in Malaysia. However, none of those tournaments had ODI status as they were played long before both nations attained their current ODI status.Among Associate players, Lamichhane’s figures are behind only Rashid Khan’s 7 for 18 against West Indies, just weeks before Afghanistan were granted Test status. Lamichhane jokingly responded at the post-match press conference that Rashid is “a Test player now, so forget that! Number One!” as he pointed to himself, sparking laughter from the assembled media.Lamichhane’s performance was also noteworthy because he did it with the new ball after Nepal chose to field first. The spinner has had a regular habit of bowling in the powerplay in franchise T20 cricket and said his experiences in various competitions bowling with a hard new ball helped him in his record performance in what was the shorted completed ODI in history, lasting a total of 17.2 overs.”I’ve been bowling for the last two years with the new ball. So I’ve got that experience how to give that rip with the new ball. It’s all about the backing you get from the captain as well and the kind of response he is giving to my bowling as well. So the belief and trust from the captain, that was the thing that helped me to perform like that today.”

Jaiswal, Ankolekar, Tyagi put India in semi-final as Under-19s show great character

Sam Harper’s half-century goes in vain as defending champions overcome Australia’s fight

Sreshth Shah in Potchefstroom28-Jan-2020In their chase of 234, Australia received a punch to the gut right at the start, when their in-form opener Jake Fraser-McGurk was run-out for a diamond duck. After that India’s right-arm quick Kartik Tyagi delivered three blows in his first two overs to put Australia down for the count which they couldn’t ever recover from, eventually losing to the defending champions by 74 runs at the first quarter-final in Potchefstroom. India’s win sets them up for a semi-final clash against the winners of the quarter-final between Afghanistan and Pakistan, while Australia can now, at best, finish fifth in the tournament.Tyagi, consistently clocking speeds in upwards of 135kph, was given the responsibility of beginning India’s defense. His first delivery was driven by Sam Fanning to mid-off, but he took off for a single while Fraser-McGurk was watching the ball and as a result was run-out without facing a ball. By the end of the over, Australia’s misery had compounded thrice over, with their captain Mackenzie Harvey lbw to a full delivery – although it pitched outside leg stump – and Lachlan Hearne bowled for a first-ball duck to Tyagi’s yorker.Tyagi’s second over was equally menacing albeit only half as rewarding, with the Australia batsmen playing and missing before No. 5 Oliver Davies edged a drive into the hands of Yashasvi Jaiswal in the slips. From 14 for 4, it was going to be a mammoth effort for Australia to win the game, especially after Tyagi struck again in his second spell, dismissing Patrick Rowe in the 21st over as his fourth scalp, to reduce the batting side to 68 for 5.But Australia were not willing to give up just yet. Fanning and No. 7 Liam Scott – who wasn’t in the XI but was batting as a concussion substitute following Corey Kelly’s injury while fielding – put on 81 for the sixth wicket. The partnership made India nervous, with India captain Priyam Garg shouting “body language, guys” to keep his team-mates zoned into the game. Fanning held up one end while Scott played more freely, but soon after the latter hit a six over midwicket, he was out caught-behind by legspinner Ravi Bishnoi in the 41st over. The score of 149 for 6, however, soon became 155 for 9 following a team hat-trick.Sam Fanning cuts•ICC via GettyIn the 42th over, Fanning was dismissed by an Akash Singh short ball for 75. The next ball Australia were eight down as Tanveer Sangha’s attempted jab-and-run didn’t pay off. Wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel picked the stray ball and aimed at the stumps with an underarm throw, effecting his fourth dismissal of the day, running Connor Sully out. Singh then cranked up the pace to No. 10 Todd Murphy to bowl him for a duck. It wasn’t long before Australia folded for 159, igniting celebrations from the handful of India fans who were present at the ground. In the first innings, India – asked to bat – had begun steadily but lost three wickets in the space of 21 runs to be reduced from 35 for 0 to 54 for 3 inside 16 overs. Seamers Kelly and Sully dismissed opener Divyaansh Saxena and Garg cheaply, while offspinner Murphy removed the No. 3 Tilak Verma.A brief recovery from India followed. Opener Jaiswal, scoring his third fifty in four World Cup games, combined in a 48-run fourth-wicket with Siddhesh Veer, but he was bowled by Sangha’s legspin just after the team crossed 100 in the 26th over. Murphy then deceived wicketkeeper-batsman Jurel with a loopy delivery that took his outside edge to take his second wicket, and when Veer’s attempted pull was top-edged to third man, India were at 144 for 6 with 12 overs to go.At that stage, it looked like India wouldn’t last the full 50 overs with Australia’s bowlers having exposed the lower order, but allrounder Atharva Ankolekar got together with Bishnoi to drag India past 200. Bishnoi, who made 30 in 31 balls, was eventually run-out in the 48th over with India searching for quick runs, but Ankolekar provided a flourishing finish for India, reaching his half-century with a six in the last over.Ankolekar and Bishnoi ran their twos hard and found the occasional boundaries. Their 61-run stand for the seventh wicket came in 59 deliveries and raised India’s run-rate significantly. In their last two overs, Ankolekar and the last two batsmen scored 24 runs and India finished on 233 for 9. India had wrested the momentum from Australia by the end of the innings and after Tyagi’s three wickets in the first two overs of the chase, they always remained ahead in the game.

"Very likely" – Agent drops Osimhen clue amid Arsenal and Chelsea interest

An Italian agent has shared what he knows about the future of Victor Osimhen amid links to Premier League giants Chelsea and Arsenal.

Osimhen in hot demand

Both London clubs are keen on Nigeria star Osimhen this summer, as the Napoli man seems set to leave Italy come the end of the season. The Gunners are on the hunt for a new striker following another injury-hit season for Gabriel Jesus, which has seen them forced to use both Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz as their no.9 at various points through the season.

Arsenal plotting to hijack £205,000-a-week Barcelona target this summer

Though they have scored the most goals of any English top flight side this season, there is obviously a gap at the top of the pitch for Mikel Arteta's side which needs filling, and it is expected to be a priority this summer amid continued expectation that Eddie Nketiah will leave the club.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are crying out for a goalscorer. Though Nicolas Jackson shows plenty of promise, he is far from clinical and the Blues have suffered as a result this season, currently sitting 12th in the Premier League and staring down the barrel of another season with no European football at Stamford Bridge, just three years after they were crowned European champions in Porto.

It is largely their inability in front of goal that has stopped the Blues progressing up the table this season, despite Mauricio Pochettino's assertion that "if you look at all the data, in the table we should be in fourth position".

Osimhen decision may already be made

According to Italian agent Dario Canovi, who represents Bologna boss Thiago Motta, Osimhen will turn down Premier League interest in order to make a move back to France and turn out for Paris Saint Germain, who are on the hunt for a talismanic figure to replace Real Madrid bound Kylian Mbappe.

Napoli strikerVictor Osimhen.

“In my view, it is very likely he will play for Paris Saint-Germain,” Canovi told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli. “It would be the smartest signing to replace Kylian Mbappé, who has been a Real Madrid player for months and it’s a farce that they are trying to avoid telling us.”

It would be an odd choice for the Parisians, who signed striking pair Goncalo Ramos and Randal Kolo-Muani just last summer. But, with a release clause in Osimhen's contract reportedly set at 130m euros (£111m), it could become a formality for whoever activates that clause.

It has been a poor season for Napoli, but the Nigerian has remained a bright spark. The 25-year-old has struck 11 goals and grabbed 3 assists in just 18 Serie A outings, and will forever be remembered fondly for helping deliver the title to Naples last season for the first time since Diego Maradona graced the Italian side.

New Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor reveals why Blues will 'rely' on Lionesses star Millie Bright this season

New Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor admits the team will "rely" on Millie Bright's leadership and experience in a post-Emma Hayes era.

  • Hayes leaves Chelsea for USA job
  • Bompastor replaces Blues legend
  • Says they will rely on Bright this season
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Lyon manager Bompastor has hailed the leadership qualities of England captain Bright ahead of the new Women's Super League season. The Frenchwoman has big shoes to fill following Hayes' exit, but having players like centre-back Bright will make her job a lot easier.

  • Getty

    WHAT SONIA BOMPASTOR SAID

She told Chelsea's website: "I think it’s really important to have leaders in the team. Millie has been one of those leaders and I think you can tell from those conversations I had with her on the phone that she’s such a great athlete, but also such a great person. She is for sure one of the players in the squad who I will rely on. She’s not the only one, but she is a leader in this squad."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea clinched their fifth-straight WSL title in Hayes' last season in charge of the club before taking the USWNT job. Bompastor could be an excellent successor for Hayes after winning a heap of trophies at Lyon but coming into a new team is never easy and she will need her new players to get behind her if they want to hold off challengers Manchester City and Arsenal.
