Alpine driver Gasly has told the : “I've been a massive PSG fan since I was five years old. I remember the days of Pauleta. There was Ronaldinho; Ibra came over, Beckham came over. You can name all the superstars – Messi, Neymar, Mbappe. I've supported every single season and I will always support the team, no matter what. But this is football, anything can happen. Look at the Euros… as much as we like to predict the outcome of matches, how can we be sure? That's the beauty of sport – anything is possible. So long as you get a shot, you have to believe in it. Maybe, then, next year will be the one for the Champions League trophy.”

Gasly added when asked to pick his PSG hero, having had to pick between football and racing in his younger years: “It's tough but if I need to pick one out, it will be Pauleta. I looked up to him when I was a kid. I played football from when I was five until I was 11 and Pauleta was very iconic. Then I had to take a decision between football and racing, basically. I think I picked the right sport for my life!”

Potential Sunderland manager option emerges in interesting report

With Sunderland in free fall this season, attention has quickly turned to the summer and the top of the in-tray will be to find a new man to fill the dugout.

Sunderland's managerial merry-go-round

After just falling short of a trip to Wembley last season, Sunderland looked ready to do one better this campaign and push for promotion. Unfortunately for fans of the Black Cats, a crisis in the dugout has left their side miles away from the Championship top six.

December 2023 saw the Wearside outfit part company with Tony Mowbray. The 60-year-old had guided Sunderland to sixth last season, however a run of just one win from five games brought an end to his 461-day stint at the club. Sitting three points adrift of the playoffs, assistant coach Mike Dodds took interim charge whilst a replacement was found.

Sunderland's former manager Tony Mowbray.

Two weeks after the departure of Mowbray, Sunderland found their replacement in the form of Michael Beale. Recently sacked by Rangers, the Englishman had seen success in the second tier during his time in charge at QPR. However, fans were uninspired by the appointment.

Sunderland man who earns double Hume's wages could be given the boot

Sunderland will have to think about ditching this high earner soon.

ByKelan Sarson Feb 28, 2024

Fans' skepticisms was warranted as Beale plunged Sunderland down the table, picking up just fourteen points from the eleven league games he managed. The final nail in the coffin was a 2-1 defeat to Birmingham, now managed by Mowbray. In the post for just 63 days, Beales suffered his second sacking of the season and Sunderland went back to the drawing board for a new manager.

With Dodds given the keys until the end of the season, attention has now turned to who will get Sunderland back on track and put the failures of this season firmly in the rear-view.

Sunderland's next manager may move "to prove himself"

According to L'Equipe (as per Sport Witness), an agent "well established" in the United Kingdom has told the French press that Will Still's next move could be to a Championship club.

Speaking to the outlet, the agent said that “Premier League clubs are now a bit more reticent to hire young unexperienced managers, as brilliant as they may be. For now, logic dictates that he signs in a Championship club first to prove himself”.

The report from Sports Witness also mentions Sunderland, due to the fact they'll be managerless come the end of the season.

This follows a recent trend in managerial appointments with Championship sides opting for promising managers from the continent as opposed to the traditional faces seen in the second tier. The appointments of Marti Cifuentes and Danny Rohl by QPR and Sheffield Wednesday respectively has seen them turn their seasons around after poor starts.

Still has been in the dugout at French side Stade Reims since October 2022 and as it stands is just two points away from the European places. The 31-year-old has a release clause of €5million that could be exercised this summer by any number of sides on the lookout for a new manager.

With Jack Clarke likely to leave the Stadium of Light, Sunderland could be in for a significant windfall this summer. Whilst a replacement on the pitch could be the first port of call, there would be few better places to spend the money than on one of Europe's most promising managers.

Derby made a mistake selling “first-class” star who’s now worth 200% more

Derby County would have breathed a major sigh of relief that Eiran Cashin stayed put this January at Pride Park, despite fervent interest from a number of higher up suitors trying to tempt the highly regarded Rams talent away.

Putting pen on paper to a new deal until 2027 to further show his commitment to the League One club, Cashin's main focus – alongside his fellow Derby teammates – will be now on clinching promotion come the end of the season back up to the second tier.

If Paul Warne's side aren't successful in achieving this goal, regardless of new contracts or not, they will again face an uphill battle to keep a firm grip on the 22-year-old defender.

Derby will lose Max Bird at the end of the season for sure to Bristol City, with a move confirmed to happen in the summer this January, but there's one midfielder already at the Robins that evokes regret from a Rams perspective with Warne's men offloading the player in question for what now feels like a cut-price fee.

The fee Derby County sold Jason Knight for

Coming through the youth ranks in Derbyshire around the same time as both Cashin and Bird were beginning to gain plaudits, Jason Knight could well have demanded a bigger fee to win his services in retrospect.

Making 166 appearances for his boyhood club before the Robins came calling, Knight's final season in Derby colours saw the now 22-year-old bag two goals and pick up three assists in League One.

Taken aback by the allure of playing in the division above, Knight would move to Ashton Gate for what now looks like a bargain price of £2m after the season had concluded.

Knight hasn't looked back since, coming on leaps and bounds at Bristol City with his importance to the Robins cause only being elevated under Liam Manning this season.

As a direct consequence, the versatile midfielder's transfer value has increased only to further pile on the misery from a Derby point of view.

Jason Knight's increased transfer value

As it stands, Knight's transfer value has increased by 200% since leaving Derby behind last year – the 22-year-old now boasting a boosted worth of €7.5m (£6.3m), according to Football Transfers.

This is down to Knight becoming a key first-teamer under Manning at Ashton Gate this campaign to date, netting six goals in all competitions for his new employers from 39 appearances.

Playing in a whole host of different positions – which has even included the ex-Derby man playing as a centre-forward from time to time – Knight has predominantly excelled in an attacking midfield spot where he's picked up three goals and three goals from 21 games.

Showcasing his class for Bristol over Derby's arch-rivals Nottingham Forest recently with a dinked goal, Knight will have his mind set on continuing to excel to try and help his side mount a serious charge for the playoff positions in the Championship.

It seems Wayne Rooney was justified when he waxed lyrical about Knight being "first class" when he was Rams manager, the former Derby youth product making the step-up to the second tier look effortless this campaign.

Bird will reconnect with Knight at Ashton Gate next season hoping he can copy what the 22-year-old has managed to accomplish, with Warne's side praying that Bristol City don't make Derby look foolish again for letting go of another top young talent for too little.

Ban or not, David Warner a T20 leader for Australia

Whatever the letter of David Warner’s lifetime ban from leadership positions in Australian cricket, he was never going to be left out of the team’s tactical thinking.Apart from the fact it is nigh on impossible to picture Warner sitting quietly in the corner minding his own business while the national team’s campaign for next year’s T20 World Cup is constructed, he is one of the squad’s most agile minds in the shortest format. After all, only one current Australian cricketer can boast of captaining a winning IPL team, and that is Warner with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016. His thoughts on Australia’s build up are many.To that end Warner has taken a central role in discussing the many and varied permutations for the team led by captain Aaron Finch and coach Justin Langer. As one of several members of the team to play all three formats consistently, he has ample opportunities to do so.ALSO READ: After the boos, Warner returns home to love and adulationThe reality of the higgledy piggledy international schedule is such that planning for one format must often take place while playing another, meaning that Warner’s rich source of experience and ideas has been useful to Australia’s’ T20 planners for quite some time before the squad assembled in Adelaide last week.”It’s massive for us all these games for us leading into the World Cup,” Warner said after his first T20I hundred. “The thing we can take out of this is sticking to our game plans and we’re going to be playing at all those venues. So you’ve got to work out where you’re going to hit the ball, the boundaries, what gaps you’re going to hit, what bowlers you’re going to take on in the first six overs. Those are the things you got to think about when you’re out there.”Same with our bowlers, with how they structure. There’s going to be a lot of off-pace into the wicket, and a lot of short balls into the wicket, and it’s about us as batters work out and learning off our bowlers as well about how they’re trying to bowl at the opposition because we’re going to get that as well.”Among the most intriguing elements of the T20 scenario confronting Australia and the rest next year is that by its nature, the type of cricket required to succeed at home will contrast markedly to that of the IPL, even if it is the world’s pre-eminent tournament in the format. Warner summed this up by noting how much more critical it was to maintain a high fitness level in Australia, where bigger grounds and slower outfields mean that strong running between the wickets, particularly in search of twos, is vital.David Warner sends one over the leg side•Getty Images

“As a batter, it’s pretty simple. You have to have at the back of your mind a plan when you’re going out there. For me, it’s targeting straight, the sightscreen, not try and play too many cross-batted shots and being positive running between wickets,” he said. “That’s the element to our game here in Australia if you want to win the World Cup next year, you’ve got to run really hard between the wickets. We’ve got big boundaries here. It’s not like in the IPL where if you don’t want to run, you can stand and deliver. But in my game I have a strong emphasis on running between wickets and rotating the strike. I think that’s very important.”The flip side of this need for fitness and running is how, given a good start, it is relatively simple in Australia to get into a rhythm on true pitches and hit with something approaching impunity, big boundaries or not. The ease with which the hosts entered “beast mode” against Sri Lanka’s bowlers at Adelaide Oval, pummelling their way to the highest ever T20I score for Australia at home, was pointed out by Warner as an example of how a steady build with wickets in hand would generally work well.”I think you saw it out there first-hand if you are 0 for 60 then you can post a big total without taking too many risks. You saw the ease with which Maxi came in and used the pace of the wicket. There’re going to be very good wickets so as batters you don’t need to over-hit the ball here in Australia.”At the same time, Warner acknowledged the balance he strikes each innings with Finch, who at a career strike rate of 156.58 has proven himself some 15 runs per 100 balls more effective at taking the bowlers on than his longtime opening partner. Not getting too caught up in catching up, in a manner of speaking, is vital to Warner’s method.”It’s not a conscious effort. But if he gets three or four away, and I get only one ball at the other end, then I’ve only faced only a couple of balls,” Warner said. “It’s very hard to get rhythm. If I get the ball there that I can put away, I can obviously do that. But you’ve got to play that situation. If he’s hit two or three boundaries and gets off strike, you’ve already won the over.”There’s no need for me to go hammer and tongs. I can just play the way I do and get him on strike and that’s how it pans out. That’s the natural game plan if I get out, he bats deep. If he gets out, I’ll try and bat deep. That’s how the top-order always thinks.”Of course, should the quick and wickets-in-hand start not eventuate, Warner had an apt descriptor for Steven Smith, who on Sunday spent most of his time shuffling down the batting order while bigger hitters took precedence.”I call him the fixer. He can just sit there and do what he wants. If anything goes wrong then he comes in,” Warner said. “Everyone’s got their roles and he knows his role very well. It’s a bit similar to Rooty [Joe Root] in the one-dayers for England. You’ve obviously got to have someone to come in and steer the ship.”Warner, it is clear, is not permitted to captain Australia again. But that edict does not preclude him from the ability to lead.

Arsenal struck gold on sensational star whose wages have risen by £125k

Things are looking rosy in the red half of north London this season.

Arsenal picked themselves up after last year's title race heartbreak and have fought their way to the top of the Premier League table.

Mikel Arteta's side have also booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in 14 years following their dramatic win over Porto on Tuesday night.

The club's recent success has been built off of signing underrated talents in the transfer market, including one whose weekly wage has risen by £125k.

Martin Odegaard's salary rise at Arsenal

The man in question is Arsenal and Norway captain Martin Odegaard.

The Drammen-born maestro first joined the Gunners on a six-month loan deal from Real Madrid in January 2021, at a time when fans weren't sure if he'd be the next big thing or just another failed wonderkid, hyped up by the media.

Unfortunately, the loan didn't really clear that up for fans. While undeniably talented, with brilliant ball control and wonderfully timed passes, the Real man finished the campaign with just two goals and two assists in 20 appearances.

However, Arteta and Edu had seen enough, so the club signed the then-22-year-old dynamo for just £34m, which two and a half years later looks like daylight robbery.

The club was so confident in the 5-foot-10 gem's ability and potential that they offered him a £115k-per-week contract right off the bat. While it was a lot of money for a midfielder of his age, he's since repaid the club tenfold.

In his first year after signing the deal, he returned seven goals and five assists in 40 appearances, but in his second year at the Emirates, he exploded and scored 15 goals and provided eight assists in just 45 games.

By this point, the "sensational" star, as dubbed by Jamie Carragher, was already the club captain, and with his output continuing to improve, the Londoners tied him down to a new deal, a deal that saw his wages rise by £125k-per-week, up to £240k-per-week.

Martin Odegaard's season in numbers

Arsenal have had a rotten run of luck in recent years, with star players earning a bumper raise and then falling off the face of a cliff – Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang spring to mind – but this time, it was different.

Now, much like the team as a whole, Odegaard wasn't playing his most free-flowing and aesthetically pleasing football at the start of the campaign, but in the last few months, he has gone up another level and currently has nine goals and eight assists to his name in 36 games.

However, the zenith – thus far – of his Arsenal career came on Tuesday night, when he stood above his teammates and dragged the club through their tie against Porto.

The Norwegian superstar was far and away the Gunners' best outfield player on the night, and while Leandro Trossard scored the goal to level the tie, it was made possible by some truly mesmerising play from the captain.

It was a showing that left an impression on the press, as football.london's Kaya Kaynak awarded the 24-year-old an 8/10 on the night and described his display as 'a real captain's performance on a big night for Arsenal', which was topped off by his ice-cold demeanour as he scored his penalty.

David Raya certainly deserves the acclaim he's received for his brilliant efforts in the penalty shootout, but there can be no doubt that the only reason he was in the position to win the game for the club was thanks to his captain.

Arsenal's brilliant form could see 5/10 star lose his pace in the team

The Gunners could be moving past the need for one of their stars.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Mar 14, 2024

Ultimately, a pay rise of £125k-per-week in such a short space of time might be hard to justify for the majority of players, but Odegaard is not like the majority of players, and if Arsenal do go on to win anything this season, it'll be in large part thanks to him.

Gareth Southgate's critics told to 'eat humble pie' after England's run to Euro 2024 final as Three Lions legend David Seaman brands negativity 'a joke' ahead of Spain clash

Gareth Southgate's critics have been told to "eat humble pie" ahead of Sunday's Euro 2024 final between England and Spain.

Southgate has dealt with criticismEngland into second consecutive Euros finalSeaman hails Three Lions bossWHAT HAPPENED?

Southgate has had to deal with plenty of outside noise throughout the tournament, as England limped through the group stage with one win and two draws against Serbia, Denmark, and Slovenia. They have grown into the tournament, however, beating Slovakia in extra time, Switzerland on penalties, and Netherlands thanks to a brilliant last-minute Ollie Watkins goal.

AdvertisementGetty THE BIGGER PICTURE

Southgate has also been criticised at times for his propensity to use substitutions late in games – he introduced Watkins with just 10 minutes to go – but Seaman maintains that the former Middlesbrough boss deserves far more credit than he is receiving, and hopes he can cap eight years of forward momentum by winning the trophy on Sunday and shutting up his critics.

WHAT SEAMAN SAID

Seaman told Betway: "England are in the Euro 2024 final, and I’m delighted for Gareth Southgate.

"We saw a big jump in performance against the Netherlands, and there are a lot of people who are going to eat some humble pie because the stick they were giving Gareth was a joke. He has ignored all the criticism and done it his way.

"People have called on him to bring substitutes on earlier, but he makes changes when he feels they’re going to have an impact. Bringing Luke Shaw on at half-time was a masterstroke because he gave us the width we miss when Kieran Trippier comes inside onto his right foot. With Shaw on the left, we seemed a lot better. It will be interesting to see who Gareth goes with in the final.

"I was surprised that Phil Foden came off in the second half, but Cole Palmer came on and set up Ollie Watkins’ winner. Gareth is making decisions that we’re not all seeing, and they’re paying off.

"There have been no knee-jerk reactions. When I watch Gareth, it seems like he’s always in control, apart from his celebrations when he properly goes for it! I think a lot of people have realised that they don’t know what they’re talking about. People were slating him, but we’ve now reached back-to-back European Championship finals.

"Winning the tournament would put a cherry on top of the cake for Gareth as England manager, because what he’s built has been massive."
