Liverpool and Spurs battling for “intelligent” Wolves star Hwang Hee-Chan

Liverpool and Tottenham are both battling to sign an "intelligent" Premier League attacker who's currently having a breakout season, according to a new transfer update.

Liverpool transfer news

It's fair to say that Liverpool have been linked with plenty of players ahead of the January transfer window, with Sporting CP central defender Goncalo Inacio one who continues to be backed to move to Anfield. Both Newcastle United and Manchester United are also believed to be in the mix, though.

There have also been calls for the Merseysiders to acquire the services of a defensive midfielder, with Fulham's Joao Palhinha mooted as someone who can make a big difference in that area of the pitch.

There is also a chance that Jurgen Klopp could add to his attack, even though he has five great options in Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo, and it looks as though another Premier League ace could be on his agenda in the near future.

Liverpool to battle Spurs for Hwang Hee-chan

According to a new update from Football Insider, Liverpool are interested in signing Wolves star Hwang Hee-chan, joining Spurs in the race to snap him up even despite the player having recently signed a new contract at Molineux.

"Liverpool and Tottenham are monitoring red-hot Wolves star Hwang Hee-chan, sources have told Football Insider. It is believed the two Premier League giants are assessing the 27-year-old with a summer move in mind and are unlikely to swoop this month.

"Scouts have been blown away by Hwang‘s performances for Wolves this season since his move into a centre-forward role. The South Korea international, who will play at the Asian Cup this month, can play on the left, right and through the middle, and has particularly impressed in a more central role."

Hwang is enjoying a brilliant season for Wolves, already scoring ten times in the Premier League in 2023/24 to date, including a winner against Manchester City and a brace in the recent 4-1 victory away to Brentford. Wanderers manager Gary O'Neil is clearly an admirer of the 27-year-old, saying of him recently:

"The main thing is his goals, and the second thing is his understanding of the game, the structure and how we try and do things. He has a really good intelligence around what we ask him to do, which is helpful when you’re trying to implement something new."

Fabrizio Romano says Southampton want to sign “unbelievable” talent

But he’s barely played this season…

ByHenry Jackson Jan 1, 2024

Granted, Hwang moving to Liverpool wouldn't guarantee him regular playing time, given the calibre of players at Klopp's disposal, but there is always the risk that Salah will leave at the end of the season, which could afford the South Korean a prominent role in the Reds' attack.

Hwang has scored and assisted regularly in the Premier League and Bundesliga for a sustained period now, with 46 and 22 coming his way respectively in total, and there is no reason why he can't find another gear in a Reds shirt if he joins this summer.

Steven Croft leads Lancashire win, with handy cameo from Graham Onions

Lancashire secure fourth straight victory with four balls to spare, despite Alex Lees ton for Durham

It comes as something of a jolt to see it is nearly a decade since Lancashire last reached the knockout stage of this competition. Time was when their place at such junkets could be all but laid at the start of the season. Yet if they maintain their present form – this was their fourth successive victory – the last Lord’s final may be graced by a county who once made St John’s Wood their weekend home. But in a match that featured a fine hundred by Alex Lees and a no less excellent 99 by Steven Croft, there was the spiciest of ironies that Lancashire’s win, which was sealed with just four balls to spare, was achieved largely thanks to two sixes by Graham Onions, the architect of so many great days in Durham’s history. With his side’s success suddenly in the hazard – they had needed 21 off the final three overs – Onions capitalised on being dropped by Jack Burnham and thumped successive balls from Ben Raine over the rope on the leg side to bring his side within a handful of runs of their target. In the moment of victory Rob Jones, who had made a rather cool 33, punched the air and leapt about a lot. Onions quietly shook hands with his former team mates; he is the classiest of cricketers in so many ways and it still seems odd to see him in a Lancashire shirt. Then again, it is a little strange to see Lees sporting anything other than the White Rose. Halifax-born, Lees joined Durham last August and his career-best 115 against Lancashire was a poignant reminder of a talent which utterly lost its way at Headingley. It was his fourth successive score above fifty and also the first limited-overs hundred scored by a Durham cricketer against these opponents since Dean Jones reached three figures in 1992.Lees anchored his side’s innings as firmly as the mighty merchantmen used to be secured when once they docked on the coaly Tyne. His caution was vital given many of his colleagues were rudderless skiffs by comparison. Only when Raine and Matty Potts joined him in partnerships of 54 and 32 for the seventh and ninth wickets did Durham seem likely to mount their clearly competitive total. More typical of the earlier stages of the innings was the dismissal of Michael Richardson, caught at the wicket for 2 when fencing at Onions; or that of Burnham, who holed out at deep midwicket when slog-sweeping Glenn Maxwell with his side on 77 for 5 in the 21st over.Durham batsman Alex Lees picks up some runs•Getty Images

As a result of such irresponsibility Lancashire’s bowlers could go about their work safe in the knowledge they were unlikely to be butchered whereas Lees’ range of shot was circumscribed by the game’s situation. He reached his fifty off 77 balls having hit one four, a cover drive off Saqib Mahmood, and one six, a straight driven effort off James Anderson when Durham were only two down. By the time he was caught by Jones off Mahmood, Lees had belted two more sixes, both of them in Anderson’s final over, and added five more fours but the majority of these were hit in the final ten overs when he had increasing licence to welly a few.It all made a sharp contrast to the opening exchanges when Graham Clark had lost his middle stump to Mahmood and Scott Steel had been run out by a sharp piece of work by Keaton Jennings. Half an hour later Cameron Bancroft, perhaps discomfited by the pitch, played too early and gave Maxwell a gentle return catch. Had the Durham skipper been batting in the opposite crease we could have understood his dismissal even better. There was blackthorn blossom above the sightscreen at the Grove End and perhaps that distracted some batsmen as much as it delighted the rest of us. Either way, Durham’s captain was out for 22 and their dressing room was hardly a place of jollity and merriment. By the end of the day it was glummer still.Between innings, Durham’s corporate hospitality moved into the fullest of swings. Devoted during most of the year to the cultivation of athletic skill, South North’s five-lane indoor school was given over to satisfying the appetites of guests, many of whom were hardly lean but still looked formidably hungry. Geoff Miller entertained them and Sir Ian Botham offered his thoughts during the third or fourth luncheon. The visitors’ pursuit of 230 on a slowish pitch began badly when Haseeb Hameed appeared to call Jennings for a single only to see his partner run out by Burnham’s direct hit off the fifth ball of the innings. Jennings, in case you have not met him, is comfortably the nicest man in the world. One imagines him waiting in his local high street each morning on the off chance an old lady will need escorting across the road to her luncheon club. So when one says he looked disgusted by what seemed to have been Hameed’s call for one to backward point, you may get a rough idea of his strength of feeling. He managed to stalk slowly off the ground and was replaced by Croft who put bat to ball in an utterly uncomplicated fashion. That, of course, is Croft’s way and it is serving him well in the late summer of a career which seems to have begun just a couple of years ago. His scores in this competition before this match were 110, 97 and 37 not out and now he added 99 more runs before he was pinned on the back foot by Matt Salisbury with his side 41 away from victory. The important thing, though, was that each of his first three partners helped Croft add at least 45 runs to the total. One or two were no less culpable than their Durham counterparts; Dane Vilas holing out at deep square leg for 20 was a good example.Croft meanwhile, cashed in on his good form like a thrifty old pro. He pulled Salisbury over square leg for six early in his innings and drove the same bowler for three successive fours in the next over when he overpitched. There were other boundaries but for the most part, Croft, like Lees, understood that this was a wicket which would cause grief to batsmen attempting big shots to blameless balls. Durham’s seamers, especially Raine and Matty Potts, applied the pressure after Croft was out and some Lancastrians buckled under it. But Onions did not buckle. He hit two sixes instead. Nae bother, as they say in this wonderful, warm and generous part of the world.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Earlier this year, Bayern announced their decision to mutually part ways with Tuchel after just two seasons in charge. However, following rejections from the likes of Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso and Ralf Rangnick the Bavarians sought to renew Tuchel's deal. Ultimately, the former Chelsea boss turned down the offer and announced that he would indeed be leaving the club at the end of the season.

  • WHAT TUCHEL SAID

Speaking to Sky Germany, Tuchel said: "My decision to not renew? From Wednesday, he [Max Eberl] knew it. We talked everything through again. But no agreement was reached. What was the reason for not renewing? It stays behind closed doors."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With renewal talks underway, Tuchel reportedly made demands for Der Roten to strengthen in two key areas. Recruitment was something he was criticised for by the Bayern board, namely Uli Hoeness, who claimed Tuchel wanting new players was because he can't develop existing talent.

During his interview, Tuchel also mentioned the words of Hoeness, and that he didn't expect an apology from him. "No, he doesn’t have to. But I don’t hold grudges," he said.

    WHAT NEXT FOR BAYERN?

With the Bavarians having ended their season with a 4-2 loss to Hoffenheim, the Bavarians' board will now be free to focus their energies on the search for a new coach. A potential option may have opened up for them after Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi, who had been on Bayern's shortlist, announced his departure from the Seagulls this summer.

According to , Gareth Southgate has left Rashford out of his 30-man provisional squad for the European Championship in Germany, which kicks off next month. The 26-year-old has endured a nightmare club campaign at United, scoring just eight goals across all competitions, and now looks set to miss out on another major tournament appearance with his country.

Southgate will whittle his squad down to 26 players before the final UEFA deadline on June 7. Rashford won't be making the cut, but it has been reported that his United team-mate Kobbie Mainoo will be named on the provisional list alongside Manchester City's Jack Grealish, with England boasting great depth in midfield and wide areas.

GettyDID YOU KNOW?

Rashford has scored 17 goals in 60 appearances for England to date, having initially made his international debut back in 2016. Three of those efforts came during the Three Lions' run to the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup as he featured in all five games, but he has fallen down the pecking order as a result of his poor form at club level.

WHAT NEXT FOR RASHFORD?

Rashford is still under contract at Old Trafford until 2028, but it has been suggested that United will consider a summer sale if the right offer comes in amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain. For now he will be focused on finishing the season on a high, with the Red Devils set to face off against arch-rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

Man Utd eyeing £69m Maguire upgrade who’s "one of the best in the world"

Manchester United returned to Premier League action by putting in another mixed display at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday evening, with the Red Devils twice being pegged back despite a pair of fabulous finishes from Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford.

On a day where a typically limp frontline showed signs of life, it was the defensive unit that came under the microscope, having softly conceded from a corner inside the first half, while having also allowed Rodrigo Bentancur to waltz into the penalty area with ease just after the break.

Although the return of Lisandro Martinez has lifted spirits, it remains to be seen who will be his long-term partner at the heart of the defence, with Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans both out of contract this summer, while it wasn't too long ago that Harry Maguire looked set for a summer exit.

With that in mind, it is no surprise that the Old Trafford outfit are looking for a potential upgrade in that position at present…

Man Utd want to sign LaLiga sensation

According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, United have lodged an enquiry to Barcelona regarding the potential signing of Ronald Araujo, in order to ascertain the potential cost of landing the Uruguayan star in 2024.

The report indicates that any deal is likely to cost around €80m (£69m) this month, hence why a summer move is the more likely scenario, with the player himself seemingly keen to stay put at Camp Nou beyond the current window.

If Ten Hag is to get his man at the end of the season, he will also face competition from German giants Bayern Munich, who are said to view the 24-year-old as a "top target"

How Ronaldo Araujo compares to Harry Maguire

Prior to sustaining a cruel injury blow last month, it was Maguire who had cemented himself as the leading presence in Ten Hag's defence, even winning the Premier League's Player of the Month award for November as a marker of his fine resurgence.

As alluded to previously, however, the 30-year-old was believed to be up for grabs over the summer after being stripped of the captaincy, with the United boss viewing his 'sluggish pace' as a key issue in the backline.

Snapping up Araujo, therefore, could prove the final nail in the coffin for Maguire's time in Manchester, with the 6 foot 2 titan arguably "one of the best in the world" in his position, according to Barca boss, Xavi Hernandez.

Barcelona defenderRonald Araujo.

The 16-cap international – who has been hailed as a "Rolls-Royce" by talent scout Jacek Kulig – is particularly impressive with regard to his ability to play out from the back, notably ranking in the top 7% among his European peers for successful take-ons per 90, as well as in the top 13% for progressive passes per 90.

Maguire, meanwhile, ranks in just the top 60% and the top 21% for those same two metrics, respectively, across the last 365 days, proving himself far less adept at carrying the ball forward from deep.

1- Jules Kounde

2 – Levi Colwill

3 – Ben Davies

4 – Niklas Sule

5 – Josko Gvardiol

6 – Mohamed Simakan

7 – Facundo Medina

8 – Nico Schlotterback

9 – Lewis Dunk

10 – Piero Hincapie

That contrast in quality can also be seen by Araujo's defensive prowess, as he has won 64% of his total duels in LaLiga so far this term, as well as winning 58% of his ground duels, while the ex-United skipper has won just 60% of his total duels and only 43% of his ground duels.

With Araujo also a figure who gives off "prime [Virgil] Van Dijk vibes" – according to Kulig – he could prove to be a transformational signing for those at Old Trafford, helping to also offer a more youthful, long-term solution in a largely ageing department.

Arsenal could make "exciting" £43m signing to be their next Cazorla

Crisis, what crisis? Arsenal bounced back from a wretched run of three games without a win and just one goal in that period to trounce Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The Gunners needed to find a goalscorer and they found an unexpected one in Gabriel who thought he'd scored twice, only for one to cruelly go down as an own goal instead.

Gabriel Martinelli popped up late to score two of his own after his rival on the left-hand side Leandro Trossard had ended his own goal drought. A 5-0 win was precisely what the doctor ordered as Mikel Arteta's men put themselves back into title contention.

However, with the January transfer window still open for business, they could further boost their hopes of bringing home the Premier League for the first time in 20 years.

Arsenal's midfield targets

On the agenda at some point this year is strengthening the midfield. Arsenal have been all over Aston Villa's Douglas Luiz like a rash since 2022 with three bids, the maximum of which was £25m, turned down.

Since that offer, Luiz's valuation has skyrocketed after some sterling displays for Unai Emery's charges, now reportedly valued at £100m. Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad is another to be targeted while rumours linking the Gunners with a £60m move for Everton star Amadou Onana persist.

No Martinelli or Havertz in Arsenal's dream lineup after Jan if Toney signs

The Gunners are seemingly in desperate need of a fresh face to lead the line.

ByRobbie Walls Jan 13, 2024

Yet, last week, a new name appeared, that of Dutch sensation Xavi Simons. Currently plying his trade at RB Leipzig on loan from PSG, Arsenal are one interested party should the Parisians wish to make a quick profit on their midfield man after activating a buyback clause last summer.

That's according to German publication BILD, via Sport Witness, who claim the north Londoners are 'in the picture' to acquire the 20-year-old's signature.

Barcelona, where Simons learned his trade in La Masia, and Inter Milan are also interested in a move that according to prior reports could cost around £43m.

How Xavi Simons compares to Santi Cazorla

As analyst Ben Mattinson said before Simons turned 20, he was "one of the most exciting teenagers in world football".

PSV's Xavi Simons

That came off the back of a campaign where no teenager in Europe bettered his tally of 28 goal involvements in league action, topping the tree ahead of Jamal Musiala on 25. In total, Simons registered a mammoth 22 goals and 12 assists in all competitions throughout a breakout 2022/23 season at PSV Eindhoven.

Coincidentally, he also starred against Arsenal in the Europa League, putting in a delightful performance from an attacking midfield position when Arteta's side tasted defeat in the Netherlands.

The youngster who is evidently "really exciting to watch" – as proclaimed by the earlier-mentioned Mattinson – has continued to motor along nicely this season, bagging seven goals and supplying nine assists in Germany.

It's that ability to score and assist on a regular basis that has drawn comparisons from an Arsenal perspective to a certain Santi Cazorla.

The Spaniard was a diminutive figure but married class with aggressive attacking play that made him an instant fan favourite at the Emirates Stadium. Indeed, his best term saw him produce 24 goal involvements in the Premier League in 2012/13.

In-depth numbers are not available for that time period via FBref so instead we've compared his 2019/20 season at Villarreal with Simons in 2023/24 to establish the similarities.

While Cazorla was far more progressive in his passing play and took fewer shots, when it comes to general creativity and goal-scoring there's not a lot between the duo.

Their key pass rate is nearly identical, as is their ability to recover and subsequently carry the ball. It's of course important to state as well that this is Simons at the start of his career vs an ageing Cazorla. If he can get close to the Spaniard at this point in his career, there is surely no stopping the young Dutchman as he gets older.

Newcastle eyeing move to sign "fantastic" Dedic ahead of Chelsea for Howe

With the second half of the season left to salvage a disappointing campaign, Newcastle United could look to splash the cash in the January transfer window to make up for their summer failure. Out of all of Eddie Howe's arrivals, only Tino Livramento is a consistent feature in his Premier League side, to sum up just how poor the Magpies' recruitment was in preparation for the current campaign.

Of course, injuries haven't helped, but the injuries have only been allowed to play their part due to Newcastle's insufficient squad depth. The winter window gives those at St James' Park the chance to finally solve that problem, however, starting with the potential arrival of an in-demand right-back.

Newcastle transfer news

Speaking on potential January arrivals at the start of the month, Howe made a surprise admissions following Nick Pope's long-term injury, saying via The Independent: “I’ve seen a lot of the media headlines and press speculation regarding goalkeepers and other players. We’ve not made any enquiries about January in any position. If that was the case, we’d be recruiting in every position given the injuries we have in the squad. Hopefully that changes by January. This is an opportunity for our goalkeepers to cement their positions.”

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

As January approaches, however, that may have changed. According to The Sun, Newcastle are eyeing a move to sign Red Bull Salzburg right-back Amar Dedic, who has been scouted by the Magpies. If Newcastle do want to land the 21-year-old though, they will reportedly have to fend off interest from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Arsenal, as well as Barcelona, AS Roma and Inter Milan during the winter window.

It also remains to be seen whether Salzburg would sanction a sale next month, given that they reportedly rejected a £21.5m bid from Roma last summer. What could hand Newcastle an advantage in negotiating with Dedic is the fact that Joelinton's agent is the same as the Salzburg gem, which could smooth any negotiations.

"Fantastic" Dedic is the perfect Trippier successor

When the transfer window swings open, it looks as though Dedic will have the world at his feet with a number of Europe's best reportedly interested in landing his signature. Among those, Newcastle could secure themselves an upgrade on Kieran Tripper.

Trippier's mistakes have recently cost the Magpies dearly, in a sign that the 33-year-old could be nearing the beginning of a decline, meaning that turning to a younger, better model would be smart business from Newcastle, especially with Livramento seemingly capable of thriving on either side. Dedic's stats show that he would be exactly that too.
