Arsenal could land Ben White upgrade in £34m "monster"

Having splashed out over £200m on new recruits over the summer, Arsenal could well look to strengthen once again in 2024, amid their desire to keep pace with title rivals Manchester City at the summit.

One area that manager Mikel Arteta is believed to be keen to strengthen is at right-back, with recent reports indicating that Bayer Leverkusen star, Jeremie Frimpong is among those being targeted by the north London outfit.

Arsenal transfer news – Jeremie Frimpong

According to a report from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano earlier this week, the Gunners are believed to be keeping a close eye on the former Celtic man, ahead of a potential move next year – either in January or at the end of the season.

Jeremie-Frimpong celebrates with Bayer Leverkusen.

Speaking to CaughtOffside in his Daily Briefing column, Romano revealed: “Arsenal have been scouting Jeremie Frimpong, as reported yesterday, and a new right-back is one of the positions they are exploring, for sure.

“It’s not something imminent but they are keeping close eye on right-backs for 2024. We’ll have to see soon who the concrete names end up being, but my opinion remains that Joao Cancelo is one of the best in the business in that role and a bargain for Barcelona this season.”

As Romano has also revealed, the 22-year-old could be available for just £34m due to the presence of a release clause in his current contract, although that is likely to only come into play in the summer.

How Jeremie Frimpong compares to Ben White

Over the last two years or so, Arteta's favoured option at right-back has been former Brighton and Hove Albion man, Ben White, with the versatile asset – who typically operated at centre-back earlier in his career – offering a solid defensive option in that role.

Hailed as an "underrated" member of the side by pundit Michael Owen last season, White has now racked up 104 appearances for the club in all competitions, albeit while scoring just three goals and contributing only five assists in that time.

It is in that regard, in particular, that Frimpong could represent a notable upgrade as far as the title-chasing outfit are concerned, with the Netherlands international an undoubted "monster" in the final third, as per the United Stand's Beth.

The one-time Manchester City youth star has been in electric form under Xabi Alonso in Germany this season, having chipped in with six goals and seven assists in all competitions so far.

While that has come with the emerging sensation operating in an advanced wing-back position, it is still remarkable that such a tally is better than most Arsenal players so far this term, including a certain Gabriel Martinelli – who has just three goals and three assists to his name in 2023/24.

Such devastating attacking quality is also emphasised by the fact that Frimpong ranks in the top 1% among his European peers for progressive carries and the top 2% for successful take-ons per 90, with White, by contrast, ranking in just the bottom 24% and the bottom 7% for those same two metrics, respectively.

To have such a weapon overlapping Bukayo Saka down the right flank is a mouthwatering thought, ensuring Arteta can find a more forward-thinking upgrade on the steady, yet unspectacular presence of White.

Bangladesh tick most boxes in dominating first ODI victory

Mashrafe led the way as West Indies were kept to 195, and Mushfiqur’s unbeaten half-century then helmed a straightforward chase

The Report by Mohammad Isam09-Dec-2018

Mashrafe Mortaza is pumped after getting a wicket•AFP

Spin, pace and sagacious batting took Bangladesh to a five-wicket win over West Indies in the first ODI in Dhaka. The only plan the visiting side seemed to have when defending a below-par 195 for 9 was to blow the home batsmen away with pace. But that wasn’t a very useful ploy on a slow and low pitch. After Mashrafe Mortaza and Mustafizur Rahman took three wickets each to restrict West Indies, Mushfiqur Rahim’s unbeaten 55 ensured victory with 14.5 overs to spare.Mushfiqur, who came in to bat after two quick wickets, struck five fours in his 70-ball stay. He let Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan dictate their partnerships with him. He relied on reverse sweeps for early boundaries before getting two past both sides of the wicketkeeper and one through the covers.Bangladesh’s reply had started nervously when Liton, batting on five, flicked Kemar Roach right down deep square-leg’s throat in the seventh over. But after several replays, it was ascertained that Roach had overstepped.Liton responded by sweeping Roston Chase for two fours but then saw Tamim Iqbal fall to the same bowler later in the over, caught at cover. Imrul Kayes, whose previous ODI series fetched 349 runs, fell second ball to Oshane Thomas who blazed an inswinger through his bat and pad.Liton took a step back but soon after the first Powerplay, he struck fours with a square-cut, a cover drive and a deliberate outside edge. He added 47 runs for the third wicket with Mushfiqur before missing a hoick off Keemo Paul, throwing away a good start after having worked hard for his 41. He had struck five fours in his 57-ball stay.Mushfiqur then added 57 for the fourth wicket with Shakib, who struck four boundaries in his 26-ball 30. After hammering Paul for a pulled four, Shakib struck the pace bowler for consecutive fours through cover and mid-on with easy drives. However, he was caught behind trying to blast Rovman Powell back over his head.Soumya Sarkar, batting at No. 6 for a change, entertained with two upper-cuts off Thomas for a four and a six, but fell to Chase in the next over with 21 runs needed for victory.West Indies were earlier tied down by Mortaza, who was playing his 200th ODI, and Mustafizur. Mortaza removed Darren Bravo, who made a laboured 19 off 51 balls upon his return to ODIs after more than two years. Bravo had enjoyed reprieves on 13, with substitute Ariful Haque shelling a chance at point, and on 18, with Mushfiqur failing to hold on to one to his left. When he eventually fell, it was to a spectacular catch by Tamim, who dived full-length forward while running in from long-off.Mortaza then had Shai Hope, who top-scored with 43 off 59 balls, caught at point before removing his opposite number Rovman Powell, caught at mid-off.Mustafizur was excellent in the last five overs, breaking a sprightly 51-run stand for the seventh wicket when he had Chase skying to point in the 48th over. Paul, who struck two big sixes and a four in his 28-ball 36, also fell to Mustafizur in the last over, before the seamer had Devendra Bishoo caught and bowled one ball later. The partnership between Chase and Paul was the only time West Indies had a measure of dominance with the bat, and played a role in getting them towards 200.Bangladesh had strangled West Indies initially with spin, when Shakib and Mehidy Hasan Miraz limited the strokeplay of Kieran Powell and Hope. Almost everything worked in Bangladesh’s favour in the game, culminating in one of their easier wins over West Indies.

Newcastle keen on "decisive" player who has been compared to Lionel Messi

Newcastle United are now one of the biggest spending clubs in the Premier League and Eddie Howe looks set to open their chequebook once again in the January window, according to reports.

Newcastle United transfer updates…

Newcastle United once again spent big in the summer transfer window as ambition levels in the North East continue to get loftier, with Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, Yankuba Minteh, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall all arriving at St James' Park.

Despite performing slightly below expectations according to some in footballing circles, the Magpies sit seventh in the Premier League table with 20 points from their opening 12 fixtures. Nevertheless, they have won just two of their last six matches in all competitions and a recent spate of injuries has complicated matters as they aim to once again challenge for Champions League qualification.

Bringing in some additional quality in January will be an important endeavour for Howe as he tries to bolster key areas; nevertheless, Al Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves, who has been mooted as a target for Newcastle United in recent times, is unlikely to arrive at the club in January as the Premier League considers implementing a ban on teams who loan players from sides they have an association with, as per Football Insider.

Reports in Denmark indicate that Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande is someone who is in Newcastle United's sights and a bid believed to be in the region of £58 million is being readied for the Ivory Coast international by Howe and company.

Now, a fresh report has indicated that the Toon could also look to strengthen their options in the final third by initiating a transcontinental swoop for a talented winger.

Newcastle United track Benjamin Rollheiser

According to reports from Argentina via Sport Witness, Newcastle United are keen on Estudiantes winger Benjamin Rollheiser once again after previous links with the 23-year-old in the summer transfer window.

The outlet claim that Estudiantes only own 50% of his rights, with the other half being retained by Rollheiser himself, alongside his entourage. Former Argentina Under-23 international Rollheiser is expected to move clubs in January after rejecting offers from clubs in England, Brazil and the United States in the summer to continue his time at the Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi.

Estudiantes de La Plata'sBenjaminRollheiserin action with Red Bull Bragantino's Matheus Fernandes

Speaking earlier this year, Estudiantes manager Eduardo Dominguez revealed that he sees aspects of football legend Lionel Messi's game in Rollheiser, as he stated via Ole: "The comparison has to be with the maximum expression. It seems to me that he has things, if we understand that it is not that he is Messi. I don't know when another (player with Rollheiser's attributes) one will come out.

"Of course, today he is one of the most decisive players in Argentine football and he has to learn to take care of what he is achieving. I don't care what he is experiencing."

Casting their net across the globe, Newcastle look to be utilising their reach to the full extent as Howe eyes more talented players from far and wide to boost the depth and quality in his squad.

Mandhana signs for Hobart Hurricanes in WBBL 2018-19

India opener Smriti Mandhana will turn out for Hobart Hurricanes in the fourth season of the Women’s Big Bash League, having previously played for Brisbane Heat in season two. Meanwhile, Harmanpreet Kaur has extended her deal with Sydney Thunder and will return for her third successive season in the tournament. While Mandhana had a lukewarm 2016-17 season in the Big Bash League with just 89 runs in 10 innings for Heat, she is known for her explosive batting at the top of the order and finished as the third highest run-scorer in the recently concluded World T20 with 178 runs in five innings. Her 55-ball 83 against Australia handed the eventual champions their only defeat in the tournament.Mandhana said she was looking forward to her stint with the new team. “I’ve heard from many players that the Hurricanes group is a great squad to be around and I can’t wait to get to Tasmania for the matches,” Mandhana said. Hurricanes’ coach Salliann Briggs said that she was delighted with the new signing. “Mandhana is a proven performer on the world stage, we saw that just last week with her knock against the Aussies,” she said. “I can’t wait to see her in purple, she’s an exciting addition not only for us but for the whole competition.”Harmanpreet and Mandhana also played in England’s Kia Super League this year, where Mandhana topped the batting charts with 421 runs in nine innings at 60.14 average. They were also the captains of the two teams at the first-ever women’s IPL exhibition match played earlier this year, where Harmanpreet’s Supernovas beat Mandhana’s Trailblazers at the Wankhede Stadium.

Tottenham star now back from injury in December after training return

A member of Ange Postecoglou's squad is expected back in December after a return to light training at Tottenham, according to reports.

Postecoglou's injury problems at Spurs

A fortnight ago, Spurs' lack of options behind their traditional starting eleven was laid bare for all to see with the injuries to both James Maddison and Micky van de Ven.

The star summer signings were hauled off against Chelsea, with Maddison suffering ankle ligament damage and van de Ven pulling his hamstring. The diagnosis for both men was an absence till after the new year, with Postecoglou now having to cope without two players who are crucial to his Spurs system.

Maddison's provides real ingenuity in the midfield area, while van de Ven's pace alongside Cristian Romero allows Spurs to succeed with Postecogloiu's bold high line.

The pair join Ivan Perisic, who is expected to miss most of the Premier League season with an ACL injury, and fellow summer recruit Manor Solomon on the treatment table.

Ivan Perisic for Tottenham.

Another player currently sidelined is left-back Ryan Sessegnon, who is actually yet to feature for Postecoglou since the Australian took charge in June.

Signed by Mauricio Pochettino in 2019, the defender has been very unlucky with injuries throughout his Tottenham career, and it will be interesting to see whether Sessegnon can eventually fight his way into Postecoglou's plans.

When the Englishman does return, he will be set for a battle with the in-form Destiny Udogie at left-back, but it appears that's a match up which could actually take place pretty soon.

Sessegnon expected back in December

The former Fulham star, according to The Evening Standard, could return to the Spurs squad next month. Indeed, Sessegnon is expected back from injury in December after a return to light training, with the 23-year-old undergoing surgery on his hamstring over the summer.

Emerson Royal

Still pretty young, we believe he could still have a future at Spurs and there are hardly any better managers to nurture his development than Postecoglou.

Tottenham's boss has shown real faith in his crop of young players since joining from Celtic, and perhaps he could hand Sessegnon a fresh opportunity to prove himself. Fitness issues are big point of contention, but the defender has displayed quality on various occasions. Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan, once speaking to Football Insider, even tipped the "outstanding" ace to become a £50 million player.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Ryan Sessegnon.

"I saw a lot of him at Fulham and he was outstanding for them, probably the best player in the Championship a few years ago,” he said in 2020.

“He’s young and has time on his side. I expected him to make a quicker impact at Spurs, but you often get these teething troubles with young players, especially when they’re competing with top internationals.

“Once he has a run of matches under his belt and gets his confidence, there’s no doubt he’s an outstanding player. I think he is a £50million player in the making, and Spurs and Mourinho will, too.”

Report: Sheffield Wednesday sign exciting up-and-coming teenager on trial

Sheffield Wednesday have signed an exciting teenager on trial with a view to offering him a permanent professional contract should he succeed, according to a fresh report.

Danny Rohl's young squad showing signs of life

The Owls currently have Djeidi Gassama as their youngest first-team player at the age of 20, closely followed by Anthony Musaba at 22, alongside Di'Shon Bernard and Ciaran Brennan who are both 23 in the Championship.

Danny Rohl clearly isn’t afraid to hand an opportunity to up-and-coming talents to showcase what they are capable of should they deserve a chance to prove their worth at a senior level, but first, the club need to bolster their youth ranks with fresh faces who would be up for attempting the task.

Ahead of January, Chippenham Town centre-back Dan Ellison has emerged as a potential candidate who falls into that bracket, with the defender currently plying his trade in the National League South, so he will be keen to make the move to a high-profile outfit.

The Hillsborough Stadium target’s contract expiry date is unknown as it stands, but that hasn’t stopped the hierarchy from wanting to get the 18-year-old in the building to take a look at his performances, and he’s already played his first game in South Yorkshire.

Sheffield Wednesday chiefs assessing Dan Ellison

According to The Star, Ellison is on trial at Sheffield Wednesday and could earn himself a professional deal should he impress the board during his time up north.

"Sheffield Wednesday are having a look at defender, Dan Ellison, as they consider reinforcing their youth ranks. Ellison, an 18-year-old who is currently on the books of National League South outfit, Chippenham Town, was handed a starting berth when the young Owls took on Hull City on Tuesday evening.

"The former Westbury United man already has three goals in six games in the league this season, and he’ll be hoping that he can do enough during his time with the Owls to secure a deal at Middlewood Road.”

Sheffield Wednesday's home stadium, Hillsborough.

Ellison is a promising player for the future

Whilst Ellison is still only a teenager, he’s got a clean record when it comes to carrying out his job having received zero yellow or red cards since the start of the season, which paints the picture of a calm and composed young defender (Transfermarkt – Ellison statistics).

Standing at 6 foot 2, the young colossus will also provide a real physical presence at the heart of the backline with his height, making him a handful for the opposition to deal with, whether that’s in his own box or at the top end of the pitch when it comes to set pieces.

Ellison has proved to be a threat offensively having scored three goals in six games this campaign in the National League South, so for all of the positive attributes that he possesses, it should be a no-brainer of a decision for the club to offer him the chance to make the permanent move to Hillsborough.

January 22Perth Scorchers import David Willey has been ruled out of the remainder of the Big Bash League with a left shoulder injury. He will fly home on Tuesday night for further assessment and treatment in the UK.It is understood the injury is not serious at this stage but has been bothering Willey, the England allrounder, since the Scorchers’ loss to the Hobart Hurricanes on December 30 in Launceston. He was ruled out of the Scorchers latest match against the Hurricanes last Friday night and the ECB medical staff have advised him to return home.Willey has endured a frustrating tournament form-wise with both bat and ball coming off limited cricket in the lead-up. He was shuffled through multiple roles with both bat and ball. He batted in three different spots in four innings, including opening the batting, and his bowling role changed regularly in the games he played.Willey has not played for England since the India series last July after a back injury ruled him out of the tour of Sri Lanka. The Scorchers do welcome back some key Australian internationals for their next match against the Sydney Thunder on Thursday at Perth Stadium. January 11Sydney Sixers have roped in James Vince for the remainder of the season as a like-for-like replacement for fellow England batsman Joe Denly, who has been called up by England for the Test series in the West Indies later this month.Vince, who recently played for Auckland in the Super Smash in New Zealand, had earlier turned out in the 2017-18 BBL season for the Sydney Thunder. The guys are playing some great cricket at the minute and are in a strong position heading into the second half of the tournament.”Hopefully I can hit the ground running and make some good contributions that will help us go all the way this year. Sydney is a fantastic place and the SCG is an incredible ground, I can’t wait to get started.”The Sixers are currently third on the points table and have seven more games left in the league stage.Mark Waugh hits at BBL batting
January 4The quality of batting in this year’s BBL has provoked debate. Melbourne Renegades have yet to register an individual half-century in five matches and on Thursday limped to 9 for 126 against Adelaide Strikers. Not for the first time it was spin causing the major problems as Liam O’Connor, Rashid Khan and Colin Ingram proved a handful. It was enough for Mark Waugh to term the standard of batting against spin as “embarrassing” although he had also noted a couple of days previously that the state of some of the wickets wasn’t helping.

Australia had an awful time against spin in the UAE last year when they played three T20Is then struggled against Kuldeep Yadav in the India series in November. Their next T20Is are set to be in India during the limited-overs tour which starts next month so life is unlikely to get easier.Maddinson nears comeback
January 4Nic Maddinson is closing in on a comeback from the broken arm he suffered in the Sheffield Shield last month having surprised himself at the speed of his recovery.Maddinson needed surgery after being struck by a short ball from Jhye Richardson and was unsure whether he would hit the surgeon’s timescale of a return in around four weeks. But he appears on course for that with a comeback looking likely when Melbourne Stars face Perth Scorchers at the MCG on Wednesday.”It seems to be pulling up better and better after everything I do,” he told the . So I thought, why not push it a bit harder and try and play.”

'We got away with it' – Erik ten Hag admits Man Utd 'let themselves down' as they avoided complete humiliation against plucky Coventry with fortunate FA Cup semi-final shootout victory

Bruno Fernandes' 58th-minute goal gave Man Utd their third goal of the evening and almost sent the Red Devils on their way. However, a late fight from the Championship side took the game to extra-time at Wembley. In the 123rd minute of extra time, Coventry scored their fourth goal of the night, however, the goal was ruled out by VAR for offside. In the shootout, Callum O'Hare and Ben Sheaf missed their spot kicks and gave the Red Devils the right of passage to the FA Cup final.

AdvertisementWHAT TEN HAG SAID

Speaking after the match, Ten Hag said [via The Athletic]: "We have to do better in such occasions but the difficult thing to do is put ourselves in a winning position, the last thing is much easier. On several occasions, we let ourselves down and let the result slip away but we got away with it.

"So mixed feelings is clear. It's a huge achievement to be twice in an FA Cup final in two years. In the last 20 years, United was in five times. Now two times in two years, a huge achievement.

"But when you are so in control in a game, dominating, you should bring it over the finish. The way we did was not good. From the 70th minute to the end, we made mistakes and it shouldn't have happened."

The match pretty much summarised the inconsistencies of the season for the Dutchman's side as they struggled to get the result across the line. The former Ajax manager's job has been under threat this season and the 54-year-old could very well be on his way out of Old Trafford as Sir Jim Ratcliffe has not backed the Dutchman publicly to keep his job for next season.
