Jason Roy ready to counter early trial by spin

Sri Lanka opted for two quicks with the new ball in the opening ODI but it would be no surprise to see that tactic change

Sri Lanka didn’t start with spin against England’s openers in the abandoned first ODI in Dambulla, but even if they had, Jason Roy feels he would have been ready.Throwing a spinner the new ball has long been a tried-and-tested Sri Lankan mode of attack, particularly when teams from South Africa, Australia, New Zealand or England are in town. In fact, on England’s last tour in 2014, Sri Lanka had deployed the offspin of Tillakaratne Dilshan against England’s openers – a move that brought significant dividends. And it might just have made some sense against Roy – a batsman who before the first ODI, averaged a mammoth 65.25 against seam bowlers in Asia, compared to 35.20 against spinners on the continent. But instead Sri Lanka opted for a more conventional double-seam opening combination, and only brought on allsorts offspinner Akila Dananjaya after Lasith Malinga had started leaking runs.Roy didn’t exactly pass his first spin test in Sri Lanka. He scored two singles off the first three balls he had faced against Dananjaya, before he misread an offbreak and miscued an aggressive shot high into the air, leaving mid-off with a straightforward catch. Despite that, he said he would be unfazed if Sri Lanka began targeting him with spin early in the innings through the remainder of the series.”It is something we have been working on in the nets – the first thing I face is spin so I am ready for whatever they throw at me to be honest,” Roy said. “It’s not anything new. Other teams have tried to do that in the past, it’s the way they game is.”In the Powerplay, bowling spin is quite a risky thing. I know I got out to a spinner in the Powerplay but it’s a pretty risky technique, especially if the ball might be swinging a touch for the seamers.”One challenge Roy had not faced before, however, was facing Malinga’s round-arm action, though in this test he did excel He scored 13 off the 13 deliveries he faced from Malinga, with 12 off those coming in boundaries. He was almost fooled by one of Malinga’s slower balls, but managed to react quickly enough to the lack of pace, and got enough bat on the ball to send it skidding to the fine leg boundary.”He’s very different. I’ve only faced him once before but he doesn’t give you much angle to work with so you a have got to be set pretty early and wait for his bad ones,” Roy said. “He almost did me with his slowie but we’ll see – it is a long series. I’ll probably do some work against the sidearm to try and combat that lack of angle. We’re used to bowlers bowling wide of the crease to give you that angle but he doesn’t give you a huge amount.”Though it’s true that Roy has been much better against pace than spin in Asia, his record on the continent overall is actually very good. In fact, his average of 46.10 is significantly higher than his average of 40.25 at home. But despite that good record, Roy’s conversion rate of four fifties to one hundred across 10 innings is something that he feels needs improvement.”Before in the subcontinent I have got 70, 80 and 90 and got out. Getting some scores in the subcontinent will put me in good stead for the next few years. In this series it’s about batting as long as possible, learning different techniques, and learning different ways of going about my batting once I’m in.”

'That hurt' – Man Utd star Ella Toone reveals how Arsenal fans broke her heart by changing lyrics to iconic Alessia Russo chant during WSL clash

England star Ella Toone has revealed how she felt when she heard Arsenal's revised lyrics of the chant for her and best friend, Alessia Russo.

  • Man Utd team-mates Toone & Russo had famous song
  • But Russo left for Arsenal last summer
  • Toone recalls 'hurt' at Gunners' fans new lyrics
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

During the Lionesses' triumphant European Championship campaign in 2022, the fans' song for Toone and Russo, sang to the tune of Rockin' All Over the World by Status Quo, became incredibly popular. It would be heard at Manchester United games during the 2022-23 season too, as the England pair helped the club sustain an unlikely title challenge to the final day, and throughout the 2023 World Cup in Australia.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

However, Russo departed Man Utd last summer and joined Women's Super League rivals Arsenal, so Gunners fans acted quickly to adopt their own version of the song, replacing Toone with Lotte Wubben-Moy, the England defender, in the lyrics.

  • WHAT TOONE SAID

Speaking on the podcast this week, Toone was asked for the worst thing someone has shouted at her during a game. After first recalling some fans telling her she was "rubbish" at the World Cup, the England star then described Arsenal's new song as the one that "got" her.

"There was a chant and it was, 'Tooney and Lessi Russo', that was our chant," she explained. "People were chanting it through the Euros, at United, the World Cup and anyway, Less left to Arsenal and then when we played Arsenal, they were chanting, 'Lotte and Lessi Russo', and it wasn't me. They changed my name out. That hurt."

Asked later in the show how difficult it was when her best friend left for the London club, Toone added: "It was really sad but that's football, people move on and stuff. We text every single day, we FaceTime a lot and then when I come to London, I get to see her, which is nice."

Toone and Russo have been best friends since meeting in the England youth teams at Under-15 level. The pair progressed through the Lionesses' set-up together before enjoying their breakthroughs with the senior team at the same time, most notably as super subs during Euro 2022 to help their country win a first major tournament on the women's side.

Chelsea have a "huge" academy star who’s scoring at a faster rate than Palmer

Over the years, Chelsea have unearthed a long list of stars from their academy who have gone on to establish themselves in the first-team picture.

It is a testament to the excellent facilities at Cobham that enable the Blues to continuously streamline talent into the senior setup year after year.

It is also remarkable that current first-team stars Levi Colwill, Reece James and Conor Gallagher don't scratch the surface of the obscene amount of quality that started crafting their legacy at Stamford Bridge.

Of course, the most famed world-beating talent known for beginning their careers in the underage groups at Chelsea are Jamal Musiala and Declan Rice; two players who would have perhaps helped the Premier League giants dominate for over a decade.

declan-rice-arsenal-arteta-edu-thomas-partey-injury-jorginho

Those two are the biggest examples of ones that got away and while the Blues are prolific at unearthing more homegrown talent, they are also astute at poaching talent from lower league clubs in England – as has been the case with current academy sensation, Leo Castledine.

Leo Castledine's statistics at youth level

Chelsea poached the promising playmaker from AFC Wimbledon in 2020 after scouring the football league for the next potential star in the making.

'An attacking midfield player who has the ability to play box-to-box, he likes to create and score goals and is very tenacious in the tackle', as described by Chelsea's official website, Castledine's exceptional all-round attributes have seen him make a rapid rise through the underage groups at Stamford Bridge.

During the 2022/23 campaign, the 18-year-old showcased his versatility by operating in a number of positions, including as a deep-lying player, an attack-minded midfielder and even as a centre-back.

It is therefore impressive that the youngster managed 11 goals and two assists in 27 appearances after making the jump to under-21 level last term.

Dubbed a "huge talent" by journalist Felix Johnston, the teenager has continued making huge strides towards a first-team call-up this term by posting sensational numbers in Premier League 2.

In eight appearances, Castledine has chalked up an impressive four goals and six assists, including a glut of goals in victories over Blackburn Rovers and Fulham, with Mauricio Pochettino rewarding that form with a place on the bench in their 2-0 victory over Rovers in the Carabao Cup.

The above statistics also illuminate his prominence even further knowing he's currently supplying goals at a faster rate than first-team star Cole Palmer.

Cole Palmer's statistics this season

The 21-year-old starlet, who arrived from Manchester City in the summer, has become instrumental to the Blues creativity in the final third this term, much like Castledine.

With three goals and two assists in the Premier League, which means he's tied on five goal contributions with Nicolas Jackson, the Englishman has seamlessly slotted into various roles in Pochettino's system, namely cutting in from the right or floating in behind the Senegalese hitman.

The Argentine emboldened the above statement by offering huge adulation towards the youngster, praising him for how he's quickly adapted to life at Stamford Bridge.

He said: "He showed a great performance with character and personality,

"We are happy with the way he has arrived. He arrived on the last day of the transfer window but is playing like he’s been here ten years, showing his character and personality."

Palmer's close control and willingness to receive the ball in tight spaces have delighted the masses since he arrived at the club, with the youngster showing Pep Guardiola what he's missing out on.

Indeed, the £75k per-week whiz has now remarkably played more Premier League minutes for Chelsea than he did for Man City and while that's an impressive statistic on its own, the fact Castledine is outscoring such a talent is a testament to his boundless potential that Pochettino must unlock sooner rather than later.

Man City keen to sign “interesting” teenager who they watched on weekend

Manchester City have deployed chiefs to assess the performances of a new teenage talent, but they reportedly aren’t the only club who are looking to bring him to the Premier League.

Man City's season so far

Pep Guardiola’s side have made a remarkable start to the new campaign having won nine, drawn one and lost just two of their opening 12 games meaning that they currently find themselves at the top of the table heading into the international break.

Burnley (3-0)

Chelsea (4-4)

Wolves (2-1)

Newcastle (1-0)

Arsenal (1-0)

Sheffield United (2-1)

Fulham (5-1)

West Ham (3-1)

Nottingham Forest (2-0)

Brighton (2-1)

Manchester United (3-0)

Bournemouth (6-1)

The Sky Blues will be extremely confident that they are able to achieve big things this term given their positive form and results, but that hasn’t stopped chiefs from assessing their options in the market to see who they could bolster their ranks with in January.

Those at the Etihad Stadium have highlighted St. Patrick's Athletic central midfielder Adam Murphy as a possible candidate, with the 18-year-old having made a total of 40 senior appearances since being promoted to their first-team (Transfermarkt – Murphy statistics).

The Ireland youth international’s deal is set to expire at the end of this month, as per the above outlet, so he is able to sign a pre-contract agreement with any potential suitors at the start of next year, and it’s believed that it would take a fee of only £200k in order to secure his services.

Man City scout Adam Murphy

According to TEAMtalk, Man City deployed scouts to watch Murphy live in action last weekend, but they are far from alone in their pursuit of the up-and-coming prospect at St. Patrick's Athletic.

Manchester City and Crystal Palace are among the clubs who have been scouting Irish youngster Adam Murphy who has enjoyed a breakthrough season at St. Patricks.

"One young player has attracted a lot of interest and was watched by a number of clubs at the weekend including Man City. Sources say at least 10 clubs had a representative in attendance.

"Man City have been confirmed to TEAMtalk as one of those clubs and are looking to add more Irish talent into their ranks. They have watched the 18-year-old on several occasions this season and are understood to be keen on his signature.”

Manchester City's Etihad Stadium.

Murphy could be one for the future

Despite being 18, Murphy has already posted seven contributions (four assists and three goals) in 40 senior outings for St. Patrick's Athletic, so having shown glimpses of his potential, he could be a promising signing for the long-term future of Man City.

The Dublin native is also a versatile operator having been utilised in five different positions over the pitch since the start of his career, including four roles in the centre of the park and even as a striker, so he really is an “interesting” player for any manager to have available, according to football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Additionally, Murphy has had a small taste of success having been crowned Irish Cup Winner for 2022/23, so the fact that he will possess the same winning mentality as the current squad under Guardiola, a move could be a shrewd one in years to come.

"Proved me wrong" – Pundit U-turns over "wonderful" West Ham ace he doubted

Pundit Frank McAvennie has U-turned over a "wonderful" West Ham United player, after originally calling his signing a "stupid" one by manager David Moyes.

West Ham fixtures and results

The east Londoners, over a mixed start to this new Premier League season, have sealed impressive results against the likes of in-form Brighton and big-spending Chelsea but appeared to fall by the wayside in their most recent domestic encounter against Aston Villa. Moyes' 4-1 defeat away to Unai Emery attracted real criticism, especially given the hapless nature of West Ham's defending at times.

Overall, West Ham have won four, lost three and drawn two in the league. However, they've only reigned victorious once in their last five games domestically. That is a record Moyes will be keen to rectify and very quickly, as he seeks to build upon the club's historic Europa Conference League triumph at the back end of last term.

That being said, there are certain members of the Hammers starting eleven which have stood out as real success stories so far. Jarrod Bowen, who recently signed a new contract at West Ham, has been absolutely excellent alongside summer signing James Ward-Prowse. The latter has been called one of the bargains of the summer, with Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards praising the "amazing" midfielder recently:

“I’ve banged on about Ward-Prowse now for so long and nobody was taking me seriously," said the Sky pundit.

"I was literally saying, he’s in a struggling team that don’t have a style of play and once he goes somewhere where he can express himself more, he’s got more than just taking free-kicks. He’s a comfortable footballer.

“When he’s played for England he’s not really took his chance so everyone sort of questions is he good enough for the highest level. But he is. He’s an amazing player."

There's also been praise for Lucas Paqueta by McAvennie, but the former West Ham striker has now moved to admit he was very wrong about one player who hasn't even started that many games for Moyes this season.

McAvennie U-turns over "wonderful" Benrahma

Irons midfielder Said Benrahma, who's made seven league appearances for West Ham, but mostly off the bench, possesses just one assist to show for his efforts so far this season. The Algeria international, signed from Brentford in 2020, has racked up over 140 appearances all competitions over his spell at the London Stadium, scoring more than 20 goals and bagging nearly as many assists.

Said-Benrahma-in-action

A tricky dribbler, the ex-Brentford star can be easy on the eye when at his very best, with McAvennie praising Benrahma for his contribution overall – admitting he was wrong to call his signing "stupid".

“At the time I thought it was stupid because there was a young player everyone was raving about in the exact same position, and they sold him and brought in Benrahma and I’m thinking really," said the pundit to West Ham Zone.

“But he proved me wrong, he’s a great talent, a wonderful, wonderful talent. So it just shows you David Moyes knows what he’s doing.”

Ange could unearth Spurs’ Kane heir in prodigy with more G/A than Son in 2023

Tottenham Hotspur are very much aware of the success that can be found in the formative ranks, owing much of their exploits over the past decade to the free-scoring brilliance of Harry Kane.

Ange Postecoglou arrived in the summer to take hold of an outfit bereft of confidence and awaiting a campaign without European football. Antonio Conte had been dismissed in March and a late-season purple patch under interim boss Ryan Mason did not materialise.

Spurs trod to an eighth-placed finish, and with Kane entering the final year of his contract in north London, he was sold to Bayern Munich in August having decided, aged 30 and still without a first taste of silverware, to search for pastures new.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

Even the most sanguine of supporters would have been worried about the future, but Postecoglou has transformed the club in a short time to reestablish Spurs as a force in the Premier League.

11 matches in, Tottenham are second in the table, one point off Manchester City, and only suffered defeat for the first time on Monday night in a chaotic match against Chelsea, fighting valiantly despite a two-man disadvantage and having opportunities to level the game late on.

There is renewed optimism at the club, and despite the loss being compounded by injuries to key players – summer signings Micky van de Ven and James Maddison – there is a belief that a successful season can be achieved.

It's remarkable that Postecoglou has implemented his exciting system with such aplomb, all the while without Tottenham's record goalscorer Kane, who has been replaced by newly-appointed captain Heung-min Son as the starring centre-forward.

Harry Kane's Tottenham career

Bursting onto the scene in the Premier League after several loan spells across the different tiers of English professional football, Kane's first full season in the English top flight saw him plunder 29 goals from 49 outings during the 2014/15 campaign.

The £418k-per-week sensation got English football talking, and despite famously earning the tag of 'one season wonder', he is now England's record goalscorer as well as his club's, where he departed having netted 278 times from 430 appearances, also supplying 64 assists.

To say that he's thriving in Germany would be a vicious understatement. After just 15 matches across all competitions, the 30-year-old has posted 19 goals and seven assists, including a goal and assist apiece against Manchester United in the Champions League.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola stated earlier this year that Kane is "one of the best strikers I have ever seen in my life", and it's hard to dispute that he has been a staggering, all-action force for club and country for many years now.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 6% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 10% for assists, the top 16% for shot-creating actions and the top 5% for progressive passes per 90, very much one of the most effective strikers in world football.

Replacing him at Tottenham is a daunting task, though Son's prolific feats this term have been pivotal for the success of Postecoglou's system.

In the long run, however, Spurs could find the dream new talisman and successor to one of the club's greatest ever players in Mikey Moore, who is catching the eye and then some at youth level.

Mikey Moore's statistics at youth level

Aged just 16, Moore has snatched the headlines recently after a stunning performance for England against Croatia U17s, bagging a hat-trick.

Since signing a new deal with Tottenham in the summer, Moore has clinched 17 goals and 11 assists from just 14 matches for club and country. Truly, this is form not too dissimilar to that of Kane in Germany.

A versatile player capable of thriving both on the left flank and in a central offensive position, Moore has scored seven goals and provided four assists from only six outings in the U18 Premier League this term, belying his youthful years with some sensational performances.

Previously hailed for his "outstanding" displays by Spurs expert John Wenham, the teenage prodigy has been utterly astounding and if he can maintain his growth then there is every possibility that he will bloom into a Premier League calibre player worthy of leading the line down the N17.

His prolific performances for club and country have surpassed even that of Son this season, who is leading the line formidably under Postecoglou's guidance.

How Mikey Moore compares to Heung-min Son

Finding the back of the net at youth level is a very different game to sustaining success at the highest level in the Premier League, but all footballing phenomenons begin their journey on the bottom rung of the ladder, and Son is no different.

Signing for Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen for around £22m in 2015, the South Korean captain has been described as a "killer" in attacking movements by former Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Typically a left winger, Son has indeed shifted into the role of focal frontman this year and has posted eight goals from as many matches up front, one of the most clinical players the Premier League has to offer.

florian-wirtz-heung-min-son-liverpool-opinion

With one assist as well, Son's nine direct goal contributions for Tottenham this term are actually surpassed by Moore's 11 at youth level, and while the two players' circumstances differ, this is good news for supporters.

The fact that Moore is also competent out wide suggests that he could absorb the fruits of the senior captain's labours, honing his craft and learning from one of the very best.

Postecoglou will be delighted with the progress of his team but, looking toward sustainability in the long-term, his eye will already be on Moore and ensuring that he is aptly nurtured to the fore. He might just be the club's next big thing.

BBC pundit says Tottenham "need" to back Ange with £65m signing

Tottenham have been told the £65 million star they "need" with manager Ange Postecoglou soon getting the chance to strengthen his squad in January.

Ange handed more problems at Spurs

The last three weeks has been a nightmare for Postecoglou and co, as Spurs are forced to cope with a plethora of injuries and suspensions which have hit their squad.

Tottenham currently have ten players either nursing injury problems or suspended from match action, James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Ryan Sessegnon, Manor Solomon, Ashley Phillips, Pape Matar Sarr and, potentially, Rodrigo Bentancur all unavailable right now.

It's an issue which has laid Postecoglou's squad bare for the festive period, and it's safe to say they quite simply need to bring in reinforcements in January.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

While a fair few of the aforementioned squad members will be back by the new year, long-term injuries to Maddison, van de Ven, Solomon and Perisic have brought attention to Spurs' glaring lack of depth in certain areas.

If the north Londoners wish to compete for a Champions League place, or silverware, they'll require quality alternatives to their preferred starters.

Spurs eyeing new centre-back and new striker

According to recent reports, Spurs want a new centre-back and replacement for Harry Kane over the next two transfer windows.

Tottenham have been linked with Feyenoord forward Santiago Gimenez, with rumours suggesting Postecoglou could make a move for defender Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth as well. Another striker to be linked with a move to N17, alongside the likes of Gimenez, is Brentford star Ivan Toney.

Ivan Toney

The Englishman, who could cost around £65 million according to Fabrizio Romano, has been widely tipped to leave Brentford pretty soon.

Aaron Lennon urges Toney move

Taking to X, former Spurs winger and BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Aaron Lennon has told Tottenham to make a move for Toney. In their latest loss, a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday, the Lilywhites missed a host of chances and could've arguably ran out comfortable winners if not for their wastefulness in front of goal.

Lennon seems to suggest a swoop for Toney would solve this issue, hinting a bid for the 27-year-old in January is what's needed for Postecoglou.

"Knew Villa couldn’t play any worse," said Lennon. "Tielemans was very good when he came on got them playing and calmed the game down. A lot of positives for spurs in the performance especially with all the injuries out. But need a striker to finish these chances. Ivan Toney in January."

The forward has proven top flight experience, having scored 20 league goals prior to his ban for alleged gambling breaches. He's also been called "amazing" by his manager, Thomas Frank.

“Ivan is amazing in many, many aspects,” Frank told Brentford's official website. “The way he copes with pressure and distractions is amazing. He’s been scoring goals, performing for the team and driving the team. He’s remarkable.

“I can only talk about the Ivan that I see every day around the place and he’s a fantastic person around the group. He’s got that unique emotional intelligence to be aware of all the players, and every staff member."
