Sri Lanka's bowlers grab the initiative with bat and ball

Sri Lanka’s bowlers, no doubt wary of another ear bashing from Sanath Jayasuriya, who has become increasingly agitated by their ill-discipline in recent weeks, reasserted the home team’s dominance in this ACL Cables Test series on Monday

Charlie Austin29-Jul-2002Sri Lanka’s bowlers, no doubt wary of another ear bashing from Sanath Jayasuriya, who has become increasingly agitated by their ill-discipline in recent weeks, reasserted the home team’s dominance in this ACL Cables Test series on Monday. The absence of Muttiah Muralitharan proved less of a handicap than had been expected, as the inexperienced attack cut through Bangladesh’s equally youthful batting. Bowling out the tourists for 164, Jayasuriya then declined to enforce the follow on, rewarding his bowlers instead with some well-earned rest. For Sri Lanka, the most encouraging aspect of the bowlers’ performance was Chamila Gamage, a 23-year-old pace bowler making his debut. Gamage (also known as Lakshitha), who plays for the Air Force, was the highest domestic wicket-taker last year, claiming 64 victims at 11.64.And today he was the pick of the seamers, grabbing his chance to impress the national selectors. He announced his presence in emphatic fashion, clipping the top of Mohammad Ashraful’s off-stump with his first ball in Test cricket, the 13th player in Test history to achieve such a feat and the first Sri Lankan. Also the quickest bowler on show, he then trapped Tushar Imran lbw with an inswinger, his stock delivery, finishing the day with two for 33 from 12 vigorous overs.Coach Dav Whatmore was impressed: “I can see why he has been picking up wickets in domestic cricket: he’s got a big heart, natural pace and his effort cannot be questioned. If he keeps directing it in the right areas, he could be a bit of a handful for batsmen in the future.”Speaking afterwards, Gamage was estatic: "I can not express in words how I felt inside me when I got a wicket of the first ball. It’s something I will treasure throughout my life time."Gamage also contributed with the bat. Coming to the crease at the fall of the ninth wicket he contributed 40 runs to a 64 run last wicket partnership with Buddika Fernando (29*). Striking the ball cleanly he capitalised on Bangladesh’s strange reluctance to take the second new ball until it was well overdue. The partnership transformed a moderate total into a good one, frustrating the tourists, who would have been only too mindful of the fact that they had not passed 200 in the last nine innings. And although Fernando and Sajeewa de Silva started waywardly, Sri Lanka quickly tightened their grip on the game, as they grabbed two wickets during a short 39 minute session before the interval: Fernando trapped Hannan Sarkar (5) with a full-length outswinger and Jayasuriya won a dubious appeal for a catch behind against Al Sahariar (12).After the break, Bangladesh slipped further into the mire, as Gamage and Fernando reduced them to 51 for five. The situation deteriorated when captain Khaled Mashud (15) edged an off-break from Thilan Samaraweera into the hands of Hashan Tillakaratne at slip. Fahim Muntasir offered up a simple return catch to the same bowler 14 minutes later.Suddenly, on 86 for seven, a three figure score appeared unlikely, but Bangladesh did manage to fight back. Debutante Kapali scored 39 from 72 balls and Tapash Baisya cobbled together an unbeaten 52 from 103 balls, his first first-class fifty.Progress was painfully slow, but gradually Bangladesh crawled to within touching distance of the 173 run follow on target. However, they fell just short as Jayasuriya, who picked up three for 17 with his orthodox slow left-arm, finally ended a fine stonewalling effort from Monjural Islam; the left-hander recording a 72-minute duck before being caught behind.Five minutes later leg-spinner Upul Chandana finished of the innings as last man Talha Jubair slashed to slip, but Bangladesh had at least done enough to persuade Jayasuriya not to enforce the follow on.Openers Michael Vandort (18*) and Jehan Mubarak (2*) survived till the close, finishing on 25 without loss, which leaves them with a 234 run lead.

Worcestershire still on course to sign Allan Donald despite UCBSA doubts

Reports coming from South Africa that Worcestershire’s attempts to sign Allan Donald as a replacement for their overseas player Andy Bichel had run into trouble have been dismissed by the county as no more than a technical hitch. Worcestershire have gone through the right channels, but the information had not permeated to all levels of the United Cricket Board of South Africa’s administration.Bichel was selected for Australia’s proposed series against Pakistan in June and Donald has been signed on a short-term contract as his replacement. However, Gerald Majola, chief executive of the UCBSA, admitted that he had been unaware of the situation with Worcestershire until the announcement that Donald had signed for them.”There is a very specific clause in the players contracts that precludes them from working for another employer without permission, and Allan hasn’t spoken to me,” Majola said.He was also unaware that Donald has been turning out for Birmingham League club Knowle and Dorridge as a professional. “That’s news to me. He should have sought permission,” Majola said before conceding that it is not out of the question that the bowler might yet play county cricket.”If he asks permission then I will consult the national physiotherapist Craig Smith to get a report on his physical fitness. If Craig says he is fit then we would consider releasing him.”The main concern of the South Africans is that Donald, at 36 years of age, should conserve his energies to spearhead their attack in the World Cup that takes place on home soil in 2003. Similar concerns were expressed when captain Shaun Pollock was allowed to play for Warwickshire this season.Speaking to CricInfo, Worcestershire chief executive Mark Newton is confident that the matter will be resolved shortly. “We have done everything we were supposed to do and expect confirmation of Allan’s availability at any time now.”It appears that Donald himself spoke to the new chairman of selectors, Omar Henry, while the club contacted Brian Basson, the director of cricket operations in South Africa. However, a breakdown in communications at the UCBSA meant that the chief executive was not fully apprised of the situation when making his comments.

Jairo Riedewald played badly for Palace

Crystal Palace failed to give Roy Hodgson a memorable send-off in his last game in charge of the Eagles, losing 2-0 away to Liverpool.

The 73-year-old manager is calling time on his four-year spell at Selhurst Park but lost to one of his former sides following an underwhelming performance from the capital club.

It means that Palace have recorded consecutive 14th-placed finishes in Hodgson’s final two campaign’s at the club, leaving a solid foundation for any potential successor.

However, the ex-England boss would have wanted his final 90 minutes to be a rather more noteworthy affair, not the disappointing display that his team produced at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

One player who was particularly guilty of letting Hodgson down was midfielder Jairo Riedewald. The former Ajax man recorded a meagre 6.4/10 rating, the joint-lowest score received by anyone on the pitch, as per SofaScore.

Remarkably, the 24-year-old had just 25 touches of the ball against Jurgen Klopp’s charges, despite playing the full 90 minutes, 19 fewer touchces than the 44 goalkeeper Vicente Guaita managed.

None of the Palace players covered themselves in glory in what was a below-par showing from the south London outfit, but Riedewald was arguably the worst out of a bad bunch.

The three-cap Netherlands ace has often struggled since arriving on English shores, only making 72 Palace appearances in four seasons, but this was amongst his most ineffective outings.

He won just one of his three duels, made only 14 accurate passes and failed to make a single tackle. It’s set to be a summer of big changes at Selhurst Park, and Reidewald may have to convince the new boss that he’s worth keeping after this shocking performance.

If that was Hodgson’s last game in management, Riedewald was one of the Palace players who let the departing boss down on his exit from the game.

Palmer expects Diagne to leave West Brom

Former West Brom midfielder Carlton Palmer has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that he expects Mbaye Diagne and the Baggies to part ways this summer.

Diagne, who joined West Brom from Galatasaray at the end of January, is only at the Hawthorns on loan, but the Midlands club do have an option to buy.

However, following West Brom’s relegation to the Championship, the 29-year-old striker is now being linked with other Premier League sides.

According to Football Insider, the likes of Wolves and Crystal Palace are currently interested, with his parent club said to have slapped an £8m price tag on his head.

When asked by FFC whether there was any chance of Diagne remaining at West Brom next season, Palmer said:

“I think a lot of the problem is going to be the salaries. Remember the Premier League salaries, even though the Championship salaries are good, the Premier League salaries are a lot higher than the Championship.

“Will West Brom think that they can get somebody in a lot cheaper to get them promotion?

“I’m sure there’ll be some movement because these players, you know, if you’ve got ambitions of international honours and whatever, you need to be playing in the top league.”

While Diagne has not been at his prolific best since joining West Brom, he has shown glimpses of being a very capable forward in the Premier League.

The Senegal international has delivered a couple of big goals, bagging in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United and that incredible 5-2 win over Chelsea.

Spurs’ Winks facing axe vs Sheff Utd?

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to bounce back after a dismal few weeks when they welcome already-relegated Sheffield United to North London this evening.

Last weekend, Spurs were defeated in yet another final as they were completely played off the park by Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, continuing a 13-year wait for silverware.

It came less than a week after Jose Mourinho’s surprise sacking, the Super League fiasco and supporter protests, so interim boss Ryan Mason could certainly do with another league victory today.

Spurs remain eight points behind the top four, so Champions League qualification seems a less than likely outcome in these final few games but they can put the pressure on West Ham and Liverpool for that fifth-place spot with a win over the Blades.

Mason will have to make some alterations from the starting XI that tasted defeat last Sunday and with Football FanCast already suggesting the inclusion of Tanguy Ndombele this weekend, one player needs to make way to accompany him.

The 29-year-old former midfielder must now do the reverse and axe Harry Winks for the Frenchman.

Winks had become a forgotten man under Mourinho, featuring in just six league games under him since November but Mason trusted him to start – and play the full 90 – against the rampant league leaders.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-managerial-update-transfer-rumours-levy-mourinho-sacked-gossip” title= “Read the latest Spurs manager updates, transfer news, gossip and more!”]

The intention to start him did have logic, as Spurs really needed to keep hold of possession against Pep Guardiola’s attacking riches but ultimately, it failed to pay dividends as it results in the north London outfit managing just one shot on target all game, whilst City enjoyed 62% possession.

It may have only been 1-0 but it was a rout for City.

Winks was sub-par in the middle, failing to register a key chance created, managing just one tackle and he lost 60% of his battles. It’s no wonder he couldn’t get in the side under the ‘Special One.’

Once dubbed a “perfect midfield player” and compared to the likes of Xavi and Andres Iniesta by Mauricio Pochettino, the Englishman is now at a career crossroad and has even been linked with a summer departure.

Currently, the £26m-rated midfielder – who earns a reported £75k-per-week – ranks as Spurs’ worst-performing player (of those that have started five or more games), with an average WhoScored rating of 6.35.

The alternatives, namely Giovani Lo Celso (6.55) and Ndombele (6.93) evidently offer up more consistency than Winks and furthermore, the former Lyon star has the ability to drive Mason’s squad forward from midfield.

He is averaging a squad-high 2.4 dribbles per game, in comparison to Winks’ squad-low 0.1 dribbles per match, via WhoScored.

Axing Winks for Ndombele seems like a no-brainer ahead of kick-off, especially after the 24-year-old’s masterclass against the Blades last time out.

If Mason wants to get Spurs back on track, then he must show no mercy and drop the Englishman from his starting XI tonight. He’s just no longer good enough for the Lilywhites.

AND in other news, the next Spurs boss may already have perfect Skipp partner in 19 y/o gem dubbed “a coach’s dream”…
