Crystal Palace should be glad late Marcos Rojo move fell through

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

The Athletic recently reported that Crystal Palace saw a late loan move for Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo collapse this summer, and there’s one reason why the Eagles should be glad that their swoop failed.

Having seemed keen to add to their defensive ranks, the south Londoners identified the Argentina international as a potential signing to compete with Mamadou Sakho, James Tomkins, Scott Dann and Martin Kelly.

However, for reasons that The Athletic do not specify, the deal fell through and Palace ended up signing Gary Cahill on a free transfer instead.

This is why Palace should be glad the deal collapsed. Rojo only managed five league appearances last season due to injuries, as well as finding it hard to get into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side when fit.

The former Sporting man – signed by United for £16m – has endured a terrible time with injuries in recent years, missing a combined total of 53 games since the start of the 2017/18 season in which he ruptured a cruciate ligament.

As aforementioned, the south Londoners signed 33-year-old Cahill on a free transfer instead, and that decision is looking like a blessing in disguise with each passing day.

In stark contrast to Rojo, capped 59 times by Argentina, Cahill is a naturally fit footballer who has admirably managed to avoid picking up any injuries over the last few years, keeping himself in tip-top condition – the fact that he was almost immediately ready to make his Palace debut despite having no pre-season proves that.

Since moving for Cahill instead, the man who Roy Hodgson handed the captain’s armband to whilst on England duty has been immense for the south Londoners – he shone on his Palace debut in a 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

Loads of Palace fans also recently expressed their enjoyment at a clip of Cahill passionately celebrating Jordan Ayew’s goal against Aston Villa, and it feels as if the former Chelsea man is proving to be an inspired capture already despite playing just two games.

The former Bolton man’s arrival has gone down a treat with a section of the Palace fanbase and his performances are proving that his arrival was an inspired one – the Eagles should be extremely thankful that a move for Rojo never materialised.

Rangers fans drooling over Nikola Katic’s form after dominant EL display

Rangers came up trumps against a difficult opponent on Thursday to gain entry into the Europa League group stages, and the performance of Nikola Katic has fans running out of superlatives for the towering Croatian.

The Gers faced a huge task after failing to find an away goal in the first leg in Poland, but earned a 1-0 win thanks to Alfredo Morelos’ late glancing header.

Of course, the Colombian’s big moment will steal all the newspaper headlines, but Katic is the man fans are all talking about.

The 22 year-old started last season impressively, but was left out of the side for a long period of time, with Steven Gerrard clearly thinking the break would do him good.

And it’s done exactly that, as he’s started this campaign in fine form, capping it off with an utterly dominant performance on Thursday night.

He received an 8.5 out of 10 in Football Scotland’s player ratings, with the outlet making reference to one particularly crucial intervention he made that lifted Ibrox to its feet.

Have a look at the best Twitter reactions down below, where fans are blown away by the 6 foot 4 ace…

Tottenham’s Lucas Moura takes to Instagram to share some personal news

The winger has named his second child Pedro, and although he’s less than a week old it’s fair to say that we could see quite a lot of him over the next few years.

Lucas’ eldest child, Miguel, became a bit of a cult hero last season, after the Brazilian netted a hat-trick against Huddersfield Town.

Of course, the winger was allowed to keep the match ball after netting three goals against the Terriers, and he wasted no time in getting his kid onto the pitch for a bit of fun with the ball.

Fans cheered every touch the youngster took after the game in a very sweet moment.

Now, the next time the 27-year-old nets a hat-trick we could see the newest addition to the Moura family step onto the pitch with him, or crawl perhaps.

From Prospect To Party Boy: Photos That Perfectly Encapsulate The Life And Times Of George Best

George Best will go down as one a Manchester United legend and even more than that as one of Britain’s finest ever footballers.

The Northern Irish phenomenon scored 251 goals throughout his career, including 179 for the Red Devils which is the joint fourth highest in the club’s history – only trumped by Wayne Rooney, Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and Jack Rowley.

The man was an incredibly gifted player while also enjoying himself off the field when it came to drinking and partying.

Best’s ability to turn up and play such high-quality football despite not living the life a professional sportsman should be quite remarkable and has made him something of a cult hero.

Here we are going to look at some of the photos which best sum up just what a maverick and what a magician he was., starting with him as a fresh-faced teenager who had not long before been given his big break at Old Trafford…

Zouma would be the perfect signing for Everton

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Everton have made signing Kurt Zouma permanently their “top transfer priority” this summer, reports the BBC.

What’s the story?

According to the report, the Toffees will now turn their attentions to Zouma after penning Andre Gomes to a five-year deal.

The French international of course spent last season on loan with the Toffees, impressing fans with his physicality and technical ability.

The report claims the 24 year-old is likely to cost the Toffees upwards of £30m, and that the player is happy to join if he does not receive assurances about his playing time at Chelsea.

Watch the best fails from the world of indoor football in the video below…

No brainer

Do it. Do it now. Pull the trigger, sign him up! This is the biggest no brainer in the history of no brainers for Everton, and if Chelsea are foolish enough to sell a promising talent with Premier League experience then that’s their problem.

Zouma was superb in his debut campaign at Goodison, scoring twice and assisting twice, while winning 3.1 aerial duels per game and one tackle per game (Whoscored).

The Toffees have already lost Phil Jagielka this summer as the veteran will depart when his contract officially expires at the end of this week, so bringing Zouma back on a permanent basis makes perfect sense.

On top of that, £30m is a surprisingly reasonable fee for a 24 year-old who already has four major trophies to his name, over 100 Premier League appearances and experience at a huge club like Chelsea.

To give you an idea of just how highly-rated the centre-back was not too long ago, he made his first-team debut for Saint-Etienne aged just 16, and was named in 2014 as one of the top young talents in Europe alongside names like Paul Pogba and Raphael Varane.

If the Toffees truly want to make a dent in the top six under Marco Silva, then securing a player of this calibre, still with his best years ahead of him, is exactly the type of move they should be making.

Liverpool: Ryan Fraser the kind of addition the club need to make

Liverpool have all the attacking talent in the world, yet it’s imperative that they continue to improve heading into next season. We’ve seen in before with Manchester City, winning the league and following it up with the £60m purchase of Riyad Mahrez.

Frankly, Liverpool actually don’t have significant depth up front, on paper anyway, despite their success. Yes, Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri did provide some memorable moments in a season which saw the Reds crowned Kings of Europe for a sixth time, but the best teams do strive to improve every summer.

So, Liverpool have, in recent weeks, been linked with a potential £30m deal for Bournemouth winger Ryan Fraser (as per the Sun towards the end of May). Indeed, that obviously sounds rather pricey but perhaps if he had a Spanish name and played for Sevilla we’d be thinking slightly differently.

The Scot was simply on fire last season, scoring seven and assisting 14 in 38 Premier League games. Impressively, only Eden Hazard claimed more assists with 15 and he’s just sealed a move to Madrid in a deal that could eventually reach £130m.

To directly compare Fraser with Hazard would be too much but, playing in a significantly team with far superior teammates will get you those figures. Additionally, according to Premier League stats, Fraser actually created 10 more ‘big chances’, which could help the Reds bring more goals throughout the team, aside from the attacking trident of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

Let’s put his stats into perspective quickly. Where Fraser claimed 14 assists this season alone, Shaqiri has 18 in 108 Premier League games, which is a pretty staggering difference.

With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain operating in a more central role than while at Arsenal, and Adam Lallana struggling to replicate the kind of form that made him such a key player in the early days under Klopp, Liverpool are certainly in need of attacking reinforcements.

Linked back in May, Fraser would be ideal in that role.

Liverpool fans, what would you think about a potential £30m signing of the Bournemouth man? Would he be a good squad player, or should Liverpool be looking for a higher calibre of signing? Comment below.

Leeds United: Brandon Barker can be the next Jack Harrison at Elland Road

We are of the opinion that Leeds United need to add more direct attacking to their squad next season and Brandon Barker can be that man to get Elland Road on its feet.

Football Insider have reported that Leeds are interested in bringing the Man City youngster and Preston North End loanee up to Yorkshire. The left-winger impressed this season, particularly when fans hailed him after his goal against the Whites in August, and he could follow in Jack Harrison’s footsteps by swapping the City Football Academy for Elland Road.

The 22-year-old planned to break into his parent club’s team when he signed a five-year-deal in 2015, according to the MEN, but he’s been loaned out three times since then and has only made one 37-minute substitute appearance for City. However, his two goals and two assists in just six Championship starts this season has shown just how impactful he can be.

Despite his average of 0.8 dribbles and 0.8 shots per game this season, according to Who Scored, anyone who’s seen the Englishman cut in from the left and smash a goal in would know he could give Leeds’ front-line the unpredictability it’s missed for much of the second half of the season.

Yes, his talent is pretty raw right now and there’s no guarantee but just look at what he can do:

Now, basing opinions off of YouTube videos is probably where thousands of ill-informed football fans fall down but such a natural attacking outlet does seem like a good idea for a Whites side who struggled to breakdown the opposition towards the end of the season. For example, they bossed the passing stats against the likes of Aston Villa, Derby and Brentford, yet couldn’t find a way to capitalise and make the most of it.

Indeed, the kind of genuine pace Barker boasts could at least ask more questions of the opposition.

Barker can have a bright future ahead if he’s given the opportunity to show what he can do on a permanent basis. He can’t keep being sent out on loan forever, so they should take a chance on him just as they did with Jack Harrison, and that didn’t work out too badly, did it?
