Palace made a mistake over Townsend sale

Crystal Palace’s summer overhaul appears to have been a considerable success in the opening weeks of the new campaign, with Patrick Vieira’s charges impressing so far.

With Odsonne Edouard scoring a brace on his debut, Conor Gallagher already becoming a fan’s favourite, and the centre-back pairing of Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen growing stronger by the game, it’s hard to criticise the south London outfit’s business in the transfer window.

However, while the arrivals at Selhurst Park have settled quickly, proving themselves to be sensible purchases, it’s one of their former stars who was allowed to depart that has raised several eyebrows.

Winger Andros Townsend was amongst several experienced campaigners to be released by the capital club in the previous window, although he revealed back in June that negotiations over a new deal were taking place with Palace’s hierarchy.

“We’re still having brief discussions,” Townsend told talkSPORT (as reported by Football.London). “The club have told all of us that there’s no decisions being made until a manager has been appointed.

“Since then, Christian Benteke has signed a new deal, so… (laughs). So I don’t know. I want to be somewhere on July 1st.

“My agent is in the background now getting as much interest put into an offer, and then I’ll sit down with my agent, and around July 1st (we’ll) see which one is the best for me at this time in my career.”

However, just a month later, the Evening Standard reported that a change in circumstances meant that the former England international would not be returning to Palace, leaving the door open for Everton to swoop.

And now chairman Steve Parish must be regretting his decision to allow the £58,000-per-week gem to depart after watching Townsend flourish at Goodison Park.

In just nine appearances for the Toffees, Townsend has bagged five goals and laid on a further three assists for his teammates, highlighting his ability to still produce at the highest level despite turning 30 in July. He even scored at Old Trafford against Manchester United, mimicking Cristiano Ronaldo’s celebration in the process.

The flying winger joined Palace in a £13m deal back in 2016, and the club’s chief will surely be gutted that such a talented star walked away for free over the summer, condemning them to their first transfer nightmare of Vieira’s new era.

And, in other news…Crystal Palace could be set for surprise injury boost, Vieira will be delighted

Auckland had to survive some nervy moments before clinching their fourth State Championship in eight years at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln. Central Districts put up spirited resistance as Auckland started chasing the 188 needed for the title.Auckland were wobbling at 41 for 3 and 104 for 5 before their last recognised pair, Gareth Hopkins and Colin de Grandhomme, put on an unbroken 84 runs to seal the victory. de Grandhomme made a cavalier 54, which had six fours and a six while Hopkins was more watchful in scoring 48. Auckland had been crawling towards their target at just over two runs an over before No. 7 de Grandhomme’s breezy knock injected some momentum into the chase.Earlier in the day, Central Districts’ disciplined bowlers dismissed four of the Auckland top five for less than 20, allowing only captain and opener Richard Jones to make a significant contribution. It continued Central Districts’ strong showing in the match after a limp performance on the first two days but Hopkins and Grandhomme ended their hopes of a fairytale comeback.Auckland coach Paul Strang admitted he was nervous as Central Districts gradually whittled down his side’s advantage. “We got a long way ahead but CD really chipped away at us for four days and it really came down to us today, how much we wanted it,” he said. “At one stage it started to get a bit dodgy but it was always about getting one good partnership.”It was Central Districts who had set the early pace in the tournament, and were ahead of third-placed Auckland by 14 points at the halfway stage, before Auckland put together a string of victories to finish the league phase on top.”You develop an aura that you’re always going to come out on top, and that happened with us,” Strang said. “There’s a lot of self-belief and once you get a happy camp and allow players to express themselves, good things happen.”

A slow yet absorbing day

There were ten wickets and two hundreds on the first day of the Hamilton Test. The second day was always going to struggle to live up to such excitement and sure enough, India scored only 249 runs and lost just the four wickets. But what the second day lacked in drama, it made up in intensity. If it was fun watching Daniel Vettori’s punchy drives on Wednesday, it was interesting today to watch Gautam Gambhir walk out to pace bowlers to counter the swing. Where it was heart-stopping to watch the minutes before Jesse Ryder reached his century, there was typical sedateness in how Rahul Dravid reached his half-century. The return of the square-cut in the classical mould was an added bonus. If there were several twists and turns on day one, it took a determined effort from Sachin Tendulkar to prevent any towards the end of day two.The second day had few surprises, but nevertheless it kept the spectator involved. The batsmen were prepared to not play at balls outside off stump. The bowlers realised wickets were not easy to get and were prepared to toil according to their fields. That said, had Virender Sehwag not got out early – and it needed an almost freakish direct hit – we could have been in for a completely different day. Gambhir, however, put that mix-up behind him and focused on the testing conditions. He might have been given out lbw off the first ball of the day had Kyle Mills not over-stepped. Gambhir was rarely caught on the crease by a swinging ball after that. He was beaten at times when he stepped out and he was slow in the first half of his innings. However he stuck at it and finished with a strike-rate of over 50 after scoring only 11 runs off his first 40 balls.Dravid displayed immaculate judgment about the location of his off stump and showed that while his kind of batting might be becoming rarer by the day, it is still very important for his team. Dravid left seven out of his first eight balls, two of them close to off and another that moved in, getting close to the line whenever he did so. His second instinct was to take singles, the short boundaries and the fast outfield could wait. Between them Gambhir and Dravid took 33 singles and wore the bowlers down. When the pitch became easier for batting in the second session, and just when the second-wicket partnership seemed like putting it beyond New Zealand, the bowlers reaped rewards for disciplined bowling. Gambhir got out to a delivery that moved away from round the stumps. Dravid was allowed only two runs off his last 15 balls.New Zealand utilised their limited resources excellently and did not allow India to run away with the game. If they could be faulted it was for being a touch on the shorter side, especially when the ball lost its hardness. Their other blip was the two difficult chances they failed to take either side of the tea break. One of the beneficiaries, Sachin Tendulkar, made them pay. He was not his fluent self at the start but was not beaten often either; it was just that New Zealand made it hard for him to score. But Tendulkar waited, taking 11 balls to get off the mark, and once he was settled he played lovely shots. The straight drive off Vettori, the flick off Kyle Mills, and the backfoot punch off Chris Martin to bring up his fifty were his best.Tendulkar’s real test came against Jesse Ryder, who provided New Zealand with imagination when they were running short of ideas. Ryder gave nothing away, got the ball to move a bit, and almost had Tendulkar lbw but for an inside edge.Tendulkar survived that period, and after Laxman fell in the first over with the second new ball, he stepped up a gear. He hit the new ball six times to the boundary, scoring 30 off 29, and provided India with the decisive edge, which was expected at the start of the day. In achieving that goal though, a new – in terms of this series – route had to be taken. New Zealand made India work hard for runs, India showed they were prepared to do so.

Maharoof ruled out of series

Farveez Maharoof, the Sri Lanka bowling allrounder, has been ruled out of the two-Test series in Pakistan with a groin injury. Maharoof, who had been overlooked for the first Test currently in progress in Karachi, will fly home and in his place the selectors have called up Nuwan Kulasekara.Maharoof sustained the injury during a practice session before the first Test at Karachi’s National Stadium. “Maharoof is suffering from a groin injury and the doctors have advised him to rest,” a team official told .Sri Lanka’s coach Trevor Bayliss said Kulasekara would join the team before the second Test in Lahore starting March 1.Maharoof, 24, has represented Sri Lanka in 20 Tests and 91 ODIs since his debut in April 2004. After the Test series in Pakistan, Sri Lanka are scheduled to play five ODIs against Zimbabwe in March and then the World Twenty20 in June.Maharoof, however, is contracted to the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL. The second season of the Indian Twenty20 league runs from April 10 to May 24.

Kate Blackwell dropped for World Cup

Kate Blackwell, the Australian middle-order batsman, has been dropped from the squad for next month’s Rose Bowl Series in New Zealand and the World Cup in March. Blackwell was part of the 30 probables announced earlier but could not find a place in the final 15-member squad which includes seven of her New South Wales team-mates.She scored 39 runs in five matches against India and had an ordinary domestic season, averaging 35 from eight games, with one half-century. Marg Jennings, the chairperson of the selection panel, said Blackwell, along with Sarah Edwards, was unlucky to miss out. “Kate Blackwell and Sarah Edwards have been regular members of the Australian team in previous seasons and while it’s obviously disappointing for both to miss selection for such an important tournament, the WNSP [selection panel] feels it has chosen well-balanced squad for the defence of the World Cup.”Erin Osborne, the New South Wales offspinner who is leading the National Cricket League’s wicket-takers list, earned her first call-up to the national side. The squad also includes Jessica Cameron, the only Australia Under-21 player from among five in the probables to make the final cut. Cameron impressed with half-centuries against the senior team and the touring Indians last October. Rene Farrell, who played two ODIs in 2007 and was part of the squad announced for the 2008-09 season, finds a place as well. Jodie Fields and Leonie Coleman are the two wicketkeepers in the squad.Melissa Bulow, Kris Britt and Clea Smith, who were named among the probables despite not having played for Australia for over a year, were overlooked. Kirsten Pike missed out on selection after a foot injury cut short her domestic season.Australia women squad: Karen Rolton (capt), Lisa Sthalekar, Emma Sampson, Alex Blackwell, Jodie Fields, Leonie Coleman, Shelley Nitschke, Lauren Ebsary, Leah Poulton, Ellyse Perry, Delissa Kimmince, Jessica Cameron, Rene Farrell, Erin Osborne, Sarah Andrews.

Fulham confirm Chalobah and Quina deals

Fulham have completed deals to bring both Nathaniel Chalobah and Domingos Quina to Craven Cottage.

What’s the latest?

In a statement posted on the Fulham website in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the club confirmed that Quina had signed for the Cottagers, with the Watford forward joining on a season-long loan deal and the west London side holding an option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.

Shortly after this announcement, the club revealed in a second statement on their website that Chalobah would be following Quina from Watford to Fulham, with the defensive midfielder joining Marco Silva’s side on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee.

Silva will be buzzing

With Andre-Frank Anguissa joining Napoli on a season-long loan deal on Tuesday, and the Serie A side having an option to purchase the midfielder for €15m (£12.9m) at the end of the current campaign, it appeared clear that Fulham were in need of a replacement for the Cameroon international.

And, following the last-minute swoop for Chalobah, it would appear as if Silva has his man, with the 26-year-old looking to be a very solid replacement for the departed defensive midfielder.

Indeed, over his 38 Championship appearances for Watford last season, the £4.5m-rated man made an average of 1.4 interceptions, 1.6 tackles, 1.4 clearances and won 5.2 duels per game.

He also chipped in for his side in an attacking capacity, scoring three goals, registering one assist and creating one big chance for his teammates, in addition to making an average of 0.3 key passes per game.

These returns saw the England international earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.85, with the midfielder playing a key role in the club securing automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, the signing of Quina brings further depth in both the central and attacking midfield positions within Silva’s squad, with his addition appearing to be a sensible signing when taking into account the fact that Tom Cairney does not look likely to recover from his knee injury any time soon.

As such, the last-minute signings are sure to have left the Portuguese manager buzzing, as both Chalobah and Quina look to be players who strengthen what seems to already be a very strong Fulham side, who will undoubtedly be one of the favourites for the league title following their summer transfer business and impressive start to the campaign.

Hutton concerned over Newcastle transfers

Alan Hutton has shared his concern with Newcastle United and their transfer business so far.

The Lowdown: No more signings?

As per Luke Edwards, it is ‘unlikely’ that the St. James’ Park faithful will make any more signings before the summer window ends, with Joe Willock being their only permanent addition from Arsenal so far.

The Daily Telegraph journalist explains that someone from the 25-man squad would have to drop out first of all, and they have spent their entire budget on bringing the central midfield player in.

However, he did not rule out the ‘possibility’ that somebody could yet come to the North East on a loan deal.

The Latest: Hutton concern

Speaking to Football Insider, former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton has voiced his concern with the Tyneside club’s transfer business so far, but thinks that they will survive relegation down to the EFL Championship:

“I still think Newcastle have a decent squad.

“But they haven’t added to it and that is a big problem.

“You can never stand still. If you look at all the clubs who are out there spending money year on year, even during the pandemic.

“The worrying thing about it is the results. Two games, two defeats and conceding a lot of goals.

“You always have to be on the front foot and looking to the future.

“I love Steve Bruce to bits; he gets a hard time up there, but it won’t get any better for him if results don’t improve.

“Fans want to see signings and progression, but it just hasn’t happened.

“I think they’ll survive easily enough but to progress, they just need more in the transfer market.”

The Verdict: Worrying

As Hutton points out, it is certainly worrying for Steve Bruce’s team that they have not brought in more players to help out the squad, especially given the start that they have made to the 2021/22 season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-5/” title=”Newcastle updates! (5)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They may not be as lucky to survive in this campaign if more additions are not brought in, and so the next few days are vital for them.

Nonetheless, time is running out, and more clubs will be reluctant to let players go so late on in the window with them looking to finalise their own squads ahead of the deadline.

Shuvo's ten bowls Rajshahi to big win

National Four-Day League

Farhad Hossain scored 88 in Rajshahi’s 438 © TigerCricket.com

As far as early indications go Rajshahi have shown they have lost nothing of the team spirit and resilience from last season and a strong batting display helped them outplay Chittagong by an innings and 22 runs in Rajshahi and move to top of the table. Dhaka were indebted to left-arm spinner Elias Sunny, whose one-man show in Sylhet literally turned the match for them against Sylhet. Barisal continued to be resolute and went joint second with Dhaka following a hard-fought draw against defending champions Khulna in Fatullah.Khaled Mashud chose to bat at Rajshahi’s fortress, the Divisional Stadium. Alongside solid innings from Farhad Hossain (88) and Anisur Rahman (142), Mashud’s 72 allowed him to declare at 438 for 9 after tea on the second day. In the 24 overs remaining before the close Chittagong were rocked by left-arm spinner Shuvo, who took two quick wickets before Chittagong closed on 54 for 3. Nafees Iqbal, the captain, was caught by Shuvo off pace bowler Alamgir Kabir for 43 in the fourth over and Chittagong were all out for 120 before lunch.Shuvo ran through the late order and finished with 5 for 34. Following on, Chittagong opener Gazi Salahuddin made an aggressive 78 with 11 fours but wickets fell at regular intervals. At stumps, Chittagong were 207 for 7 still needing 111 to make the hosts bat again. It was all over inside the first session the next day, with Shuvo taking his tenth wicket. Farhad Hossain chipped in with four wickets to dismiss Chittagong for 296. The inevitable was delayed by Tariq Ahmed (54) and Mukhtar Ali (40 not out).A depleted Dhaka batted first and four of the top seven batsmen hit fifties – Golam Rahman (71), Mithun Ali (69), Kamrul Islam (62) and Ezaz Ahmed (88) blasting nine sixes and 26 fours in a total of 343. At one stage Sylhet were 309 for 5 on day two, and it could have been a lot worse for Dhaka without a hat-trick from Sunny. Off the third ball of the 109th over Kamrul attempted a slog-sweep and Javed Omar dived to his right at square leg to take a fine catch; next ball Taposh Ghosh fell leg-before; and then Nazmul Hossain was trapped lbw to complete the hat-trick, the second in NCL history following Dolar Mahmud’s last season. Sunny went on to take 7 for 79.Shamsur Rahman played a typically fluent 78 and Dhaka’s innings showed promise with Marshall Ayub and Nazmul Hossain completing half-centuries. But the last four batsmen did not score. Sylhet’s opening bowlers, Nazmul and Rashedur Rahman, shared eight wickets and Dhaka folded for 254 on the third day to concede a first-innings lead of 89. Sylhet’s ploy to attack Sunny from the onset in their second innings did not work on a slow and low third-day pitch. They paid the price over a session and a half and were bundled out for 113 with Sunny claiming 6 for 28 and a match haul of 13 for 107. With the pitch unsuitable for playing strokes, openers Omar (43) and Anwar Hossain gave Dhaka a cautious but solid start by putting on 73 in 39.2 overs. Mahmudullah then made an unbeaten 56 off 100 balls to take Dhaka home by six wickets. At Fatullah, Robiul Islam’s 5 for 86 restricted Barisal to 288, which would have been a lot poorer if not for an eight-wicket stand of 137 between Nasir Hossain (67) and Sajidul Islam (52). Khulna’s innings capitulated under the sustained pressure from Talha Jubair (4 for 43) and Sajidul (3 for 51) and they were bowled out for 210. Barisal could not capitalise on the 78-run lead, however, and were dismissed for 81. With 260 to get ,Tushar’s 56 gave Khulna hope Sajidul bowled him to leave them 167 for 6. Khulnga batted out 17 overs to finished on 207 for 8. Tariqul Islam took 5 for 83 for Barisal.Player of the week: Elias Sunny
Living up to the standards set by Rafique is an unenviable task, especially if you are a left-arm spinner. In Bangladesh it is easy to get lost in the slow-lefties crowd with so many involved in domestic cricket. If Rafique and Musharraf were still available Sunny might never have got a chance to play for Dhaka but when the opportunity presented itself he was there to grab it with both hands. Bowling in the classical mould he mixed his deliveries, generally at a slow speed. Importantly he gave the ball flight and extracted spin. The relentless guile was too much for the Sylhet batsmen and Sunny returned 13 wickets in the match, which included only the second hat-trick in National Cricket League’s history.

Jemson drops Nottingham Forest transfer claim ahead of deadline

Former Nottingham Forest star Nigel Jemson insists that the club need new signings before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

The Championship club have struggled immensely at the start of the season.

Under the management of Chris Hughton, they are rooted to the bottom of the Championship table and did not win any of their opening four games of the season.

They have been active in the transfer window but have yet to actually invest in a player.

Loan deals for Watford’s Philip Zinckernagel, Arsenal’s Jordi Osei-Tutu, and Manchester United’s James Garner have been struck, as has a free transfer to sign goalkeeper Ethan Horvath.

Jemson insists that Forest will need to splash the cash before Tuesday if they are to ensure that they do not spend the season struggling at the base of the table, especially given the age profile of the current squad.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “For sure, there has to be new players coming in.

“I’ll be perfectly honest, I’ll be worried if we don’t get any more signings in, about how the season will pan out. It is imperative that we get new signings in, it relieves a little bit of pressure on other people, certainly the younger players because you get new signings and it gives everyone a lift.”

Jemson played for the club between 1988 and 1991.
