Watson on target to secure cup allrounder role

COLOMBO – If Shane Watson is feeling the pressure of being theall-rounder hope of Australian cricket, he isn’t showing it.

Michael Donaldson24-Sep-2002COLOMBO – If Shane Watson is feeling the pressure of being theall-rounder hope of Australian cricket, he isn’t showing it.The 22-year-old Queensland-born Tasmanian is set to be one ofAustralia’s key players in the Champions Trophy semi-final against SriLanka here on Friday, easily be the most intense match he’s played. After that there’s a summer at home and, if he continues his currentprogress, a spot at next year’s World Cup.So far he seems unfazed by what’s been asked of him and actually appearsto be thriving on the challenges.”I’m very happy with the way things have been going,” Watson said inColombo.”I’ve been working really hard to develop my one-day game andeverything’s going to plan at the moment.”Watson, 22, has improved as a bowler since he’s been on tour this seasonand he’s shown with the bat that he can smash quick runs as well andalso occupy the crease if necessary.”With my bowling I’ve been working on bowling smart to get my runs perover down, that’s my role – just tie it up and let other guys take thewickets,’ Watson said. With the bat, his biggest problem – if it can be called a problem – islearning to hit the ball in the air.As a natural no.4 batsman, Watson has spent his life playing thepercentages, keeping the ball on the deck and making technically correctscores. But as an all-rounder for Australia, he’s often required to blastboundaries off very few balls at the end of an innings.”Since I’ve been a little fella I’ve concentrated on not hitting theball in the air – that’s been a really important thing because the moreyou hit the ball in the air the higher chance you have of getting out.”That’s something I’ve had to develop – the confidence to hit over thetop and to pick the areas to hit.”So far, Watson appears to have achieved his goals. On this tour he’s only batted three times but has yet to get out. On theway he’s made a match-saving 77 not out off 113 balls to win the matchagainst Kenya in Nairobi while his other knocks have been 10 not out offsix balls against Pakistan in Nairobi and 19 not out off nine ballsagainst New Zealand here.In the bowling department, he’s taken six wickets in seven games sincethe start of this tour, while conceding only 3.09 runs per over.It all points to Watson being the man to finally nail Australia’stroublesome all-rounder spot, something Andrew Symonds and Ian Harveyhaven’t been able to do.”It is a very difficult role because you have be very flexible,” saidWatson.”You either have to come and do what Andrew Symonds or Ian Harvey can do- strike the ball very cleanly – but then there’s other times when yougo in at 5-60 and get the team out of trouble, that’s something I thinkI’m strongest at and I’m trying to develop my hitting to get balls tothe boundary.”Ian Harvey’s proven to be a great one-day bowler.”But I guess it’s the all-round package the team’s been looking for …hopefully I can become that genuine allrounder.”Australia resumed full training today after a break in the Maldives, while the tournament had a rest day mode ahead of Wednesday’s firstsemifinal between South Africa and India.

Vaughan to sit out tour opener

PERTH, Oct 21 AAP – England’s form batsman Michael Vaughan will sit out his team’s tour opener, but insists his knee injury will not stop him playing in the upcoming Ashes series starting next month. The Yorkshireman enjoyed a remarkable northern summer in which he registered four Test centuries including scores of 195 and 197 against India. But his right knee, which he had a minor operation on last month, has pulled up sore forcing him out of the match against an ACB Chairman’s XI at Lilac Hill tomorrow. His knee will be of an enormous concern for the England team as it already has some major injury worries in the 16-strong squad. But the 27-year-old said he hoped to be fit in time for the two-day match against Western Australia starting at the WACA ground on Thursday.Allrounder Andrew Flintoff and Darren Gough will also miss the Lilac Hill fixture as they try to recover from respective hernia and knee operations. But Vaughan will arguably be the tourists’ biggest concern as his partnership with Marcus Trescothick at the top of the order is seen as pivotal to England’s hopes of winning an Ashes series for the first time in 16 years.Vaughan has scored 1710 runs in 23 Tests and his average of 47.50 is easily the best in the England team. The only other batsman with an average of more than 40 is Trescothick.”A bit of dehydration from the flight and obviously a little bit of swelling (of the knee) but it has gone really well the past 48 hours,” Vaughan said today. The right-hander is one of the great unknowns for Australia as he missed the 2001 Ashes series also because of a knee injury.Vaughan has only played one match against Australia in a one-day encounter at Old Trafford last year but was bowled first ball by quick Jason Gillespie.”I have played one game so far and only lasted one ball, so things can only get better,” he said. And despite averaging an impressive 90 in six Tests over the northern summer he also conceded he was also dismissed first ball by Australian paceman Glenn McGrath in their only encounter in a county match. However the amiable Vaughan didn’t appear very concerned about his previous efforts against Australia’s pace attack. He said he and Trescothick would try to play in a positive fashion against McGrath who reached the 400 Test wicket mark in Sharjah today.Vaughan said the openers probably wouldn’t follow New Zealand’s tactic against Australia last summer of leaving anything slightly outside of off stump.”If it is there to leave you have got to leave it, but I think the positive approach is the best approach,” he said.”Marcus and I are the type of guys who go out looking to be positive.”But Glenn McGrath is going to have periods of play where he’s bowling very well and leaving the ball might be the best option.”But we’ll have to judge the wicket and the best way to play on the day.”The first Ashes Test starts on November 7 in Brisbane.Meanwhile the ACB Chairman’s XI made one change with West Australian batsman Chris Rogers replacing teammate Scott Meuleman who has a thigh injury. The England team is: Nasser Hussain (c), Mark Butcher, Andrew Caddick, John Crawley, Richard Dawson, Ashley Giles, Matthew Hoggard, Stephen Harmison, Simon Jones, Robert Key, Alec Stewart, Marcus Trescothick, James Foster. The ACB Chairman’s XI is: Michael Hussey (c), Ryan Campbell(v-c), Michael Clark, Kade Harvey, Brad Hogg, Chris Rogers, Matthew Nicholson, Marcus North, Callum Thorp, Paul Wilson, Kim Hughes, David Hookes, Wayne Clark.

'We just have to win' says Shine ahead of Sabres game against the Bears

Despite his side having to settle for a draw after dominating their championship match against Warwickshire, the Somerset coach Kevin Shine was in upbeat mood at the end of the day at the Taunton.Looking forward to the NUL game tomorrow against Warwickshire Bears he told me: “It’s quite simple we just have to win. Mathematically we could still stay up so we must get a result from the game tomorrow.”There will be two changes to the championship side that has faced Warwickshire over the last four days.Steffan Jones, who performed the twelfth man duties today comes in to replace Richard Johnson and Piran Holloway replaces Peter Bowler.

Likes and dislikes ruining cricket team's performance

With talent in abundance, Pakistan cricket team which is perhaps the best on paper in the world looks demoralised because of the total mess in the management

Ali Kabir12-Sep-2002With talent in abundance, Pakistan cricket team which is perhaps the best on paper in the world looks demoralised because of the total mess in the management. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is being run simply on personal whims of the establishment totally ignoring the potential of the players and selection or appointment of team officials who are simply either incompetent or have no say whatsoever in its functioning or policy making decisions. Whatever may be the reason, in nutshell the team’s performance is proof enough of all-round deterioration. The team’s performance at Tangiers (Morocco) and Nairobi in the just concluded tri-nation competition exposed the intentions and calibre of all those who are associated with the team and those who are at the helm of affairs. The responsibility cannot be put only on the team management or the establishment. If one cares to do postmortem of the recent events, which is a must and if someone cares to improve the things, it is evident that there is unnecessary interference from some quarters which is adversely affecting the team’s performance. The role in the overall performance of the team shows that personal likes and dislikes is governing the policy of the PCB. If national interest is dear to anyone, this factor should never be allowed to creep in. The problem is that it has become the governing factor. Those who talk of merit are living in a fool’s paradise at least in the present PCB setup.Every move of the establishment is manoeuvred which has plagued the board. Nobody in the PCB seems to be sincere or loyal to the game. If there would have been sincere people, they would not have allowed sports vultures to hang around. What is the contribution of individuals like Zakir Hussain Syed to cricket. He was offered a lucrative job of secretary, Asian Cricket Council and unconfirmed reports suggest that a situation is being created to adjust him somewhere in the PCB hierarchy.Presence of a few shady characters in Morocco has given new dimensions to rumours that Pakistan lost some of the matches in Tangiers under suspicious circumstances. May be someone sensing rift in the team and being present on the scene made full use of the situation. The Kenya episode, which resulted in Yousuf Youhana being sent home was the overflow of happening in Morocco which was covered up under the guise of fitness problem of the batsman. Can the PCB explain how come Youhana went for an MRI test without the consent of the team doctor. It was all doctored and nothing else. The present PCB setup has a set plan to have only ‘yes’ men or paid employees who dare not raise their finger on any issue. It adopted the policy of having paid selectors and perhaps the PCB chief himself was the worst sufferer when his yes men dare not pinpoint the fault of Junaid Zia’s bowling action. The result was that Junaid was called for chucking on four occasions. Team coach Haroon Rasheed failed to show any wisdom by not pointing out the problem with Junaid’s action after the first call. But, Haroon was more interested in his bread and butter than anything else. The present chairman of the selection committee, Wasim Bari, a gentleman cricketer, just cannot afford to put his foot down and at times he is not even aware of team selection. The PCB is in dire need of men of the stature of Haseeb Ahsan who despite having best relations with the then BCCP chief, Air Marshal (Retd) Nur Khan refused to select, player of the calibre of former Pakistan captain, Imran Khan, purely on medical grounds and stepped down, totally ignoring his relationship with Nur Khan. When Haseeb toured England with the Pakistan team as manager, the British press which is always out to run down visiting teams was perhaps most respectful. Then we have a man in Naushad Ali, who is a clean man and has managed the Pakistan team, is a former Chairman of the Selection Committee and a former ICC match referee with good reputation. But such people cannot be inducted in the board as they are men of principle and would work with full freedom without any interference. Nobody can doubt their credibility and credentials. There are some other people but they do not suit the present management who want to meddle in everything and are responsible for the present mess up.The latest action of the PCB in retaining Shoaib Malik and sending back Azhar Mahmood is simply disgusting. Shoaib Malik is being rated as a better off-spinner than Saqlain Mushtaq and a better batsman than Saeed Anwar. So much so that the PCB toyed with the idea of promoting him as an opener. Shoaib Malik scored two hundreds in one-dayer which gave boost to the manipulators to promote him in the batting order. The whole effort fired back as whenever he went to open the innings he played dot balls, resulting in increased pressure on the team. He only wanted to secure his place in the team caring hoots for the team interest. He failed as a bowler when in three matches he just bowled one over for 15 runs. In the last match against Australia he scored 37 from 94 balls which totally belied the PCB hierarchy’s doctrine. If anyone from Nairobi had to be sent home, it should have been Shoaib Malik, the worst performer on the present form and not Azhar Mahmood who has been declared unfit, a reasoning which is hard to challenge as neither the player nor the team doctor will support for obvious reasons. Those who follow the game must be surprised with the way the present management is handling Shahid Afridi, who holds the world record of scoring fastest century in one-day. The team management is toying with his batting position. He has batted at No. 3, 5, 6, 8, 9 and last time he was sent to open the innings. Can anybody in his senses ever make such decision unless there is some motive behind it.Misbah-ul-Haq, who has been unlucky in the past at last got a chance when the team management was left with no option and he slapped in the face of the establishment by scoring 50, 39 and 50. What was the team of so many experts travelling with the squad doing all along. All the team officials should be kicked out and fresh team of management should be inducted. But nothing will change as long there is interference from the top. Unless everyone who is given a particular assignment has a free hand which at the moment seems impossible. What has been the benefit of specialist, trainers imported from Australia for batting, bowling and fielding.Pakistan sports in general and cricket in particular is on decline and one cannot expect any improvement unless we do away with the politics of regionalism, nepotism and ‘sifarish’ and work with the sole aim of promoting national interest, keeping personal interest at a distance. No doubt it is easy to preach than practice but nothing is impossible if there is sincerity and loyalty to the nation which should not be compromised.

Roberts says Kane should be Spurs skipper

Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Graham Roberts believes that Harry Kane should be the club’s skipper and claims that having the armband would have stopped the prospect of him asking to leave.

Sky Sports have reported that Kane has asked to leave the club this summer amid interest from a number of Premier League clubs.

Manchester United and Manchester City have both been touted with an interest, as have Chelsea.

It remains to be seen, though, if he will leave the club this summer, as any deal to sign him would be hugely expensive because he has three years remaining on his current contract.

Roberts, who lifted the UEFA Cup as captain of Spurs back in the 1980s, believes that Kane should have the armband permanently instead of Hugo Lloris.

And he believes that if he were, he would not have any inclination to push for a move away from the north London club.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Roberts said: “Make him captain next year. He’s captain of England, alright we’ve got Hugo, who’s captain of France, but Harry Kane is captain of England.

“You play in England, so why is he not captain of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club? He’s a homegrown lad, he deserves to be the captain.

“If he’d have been captain now, I don’t think anything would have been said because it’s very hard for a captain to ask for a transfer.”

Cumming century sets foundation for Otago to dictate terms

A monster second-wicket partnership between Mark Richardson (97) and Craig Cumming, who ended unbeaten on 125, a tea declaration and three wickets in the last session left Otago in firm control of their Shell Trophy match against Northern Districts with one day to play.Otago declared at 238 for two, 83 runs ahead of Northern on the first innings. By the end of the day, the home side were 61 for three, still 22 in arrears and looking in danger of coming off worst in the points battle at the top of the table. The 220-run partnership for the second wicket was a beast of startling contrast. Cumming and Richardson spent the morning being most circumspect, 86 runs coming from the first 140 minutes’ play. The Northern bowlers were tight and the Otago pair were content to make use of whatever loose balls came their way. There were not many. What was served at lunch? It might have been two different batsmen on duty after the break, reflected in the 151 runs bludgeoned in the 130 minutes until the declaration at tea. Cumming showed particular preference for anything on his legs; Richardson’s innings was best expressed with the left-handers’ classic straight drive. The day certainly did not start like one that would produce two short of 300 runs. Another night of Hamilton dampness, this time heavy dew, ensured a delayed start. Otago resumed half an hour late under high overcast skies at one without loss in response to Northern’s 155. After the early departure of their captain, Matt Horne (1), Richardson and Cumming settled in for what appeared to be the long haul. With an industrious approach that made little room for adventure, they took the score through to 87 for one in the face of Northern bowling that was generally accurate, induced the occasional false shot but offered just enough for the Otago pair to suggest they were doing more than occupying the crease. They certainly did more than that after lunch – although inititally runs tended to come in bursts, eight off an over here, ten off another there, then a pause, then another burst, 12 here, 15 there. However, once past the Northern first innings score, they took to the bowlers. None was immune, the straight drive and the pull in particular doing the damage.New Northern medium pacer Simon Andrews gained particular experience of the split personality of the innings, his first five overs in first-class cricket going for just 11, the four in his second spell contributing 43 to the Otago cause. The rest of his colleagues were similarly dealt to, Simon Doull and Grant Bradburn picking up the only two wickets to fall.Northern’s progress during the final session was slow, just five boundaries, only one in the last hour. Michael Parlane went early, driving outside off and giving Duncan Drew his fourth catch in his first match behind the stumps. That seemed a signal that all Northern batsmen were vulnerable outside off. Certainly, that was where the Otago bowlers, Bradley Scott and Paul Wiseman excepted, bowled again and again and that was where the Northern batsmen ignored them – again and again.David Sewell was rewarded for one straight over, Drew getting his fifth catch of the innings to remove James Marshall (29), but the left-armer’s figures of one for five off 11 were very flattering. On the other hand, Scott’s catching Mark Bailey (23) in front was just recompense for bowling straight.Bailey’s wicket ended a 52-run partnership with Marshall, Northern’s highest of the match. They will need to improve that dismal record if they are to have any chance of coming out of this match with some profit. With Wiseman looking in demanding form, that prospect looks increasingly slim.
