Spurs could yet target ten Hag

According to a report by the Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur held a video call with Ajax boss Erik ten Hag before he signed a new contract and he could yet come back on to the club’s radar.

The Lowdown: Spurs manager chase…

Spurs have suffered repeated managerial blows over this last fortnight.

Firstly, the Athletic broke news of Tottenham and their talks with former boss Mauricio Pochettino – but his current club PSG refused to budge on their stance of letting the Argentine leave.

Afterwards, Spurs turned their focus to former Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte, but those talks eventually broke down – leaving the Lilywhites back at square one.

The Latest: Spurs could turn to ten Hag…

Now, the Telegraph claim that Erik ten Hag could still come back into focus amid Fabio Paratici’s impending appointment as sporting director/general manager.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news/” title=”Spurs latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, Spurs will apparently be starting fresh with a new shortlist and the Italian is said to be overseeing it.

One man who could retain his place as a Tottenham managerial target, though, is ten Hag – with journalist Matt Law stating that Spurs held a video call with the Dutchman before he signed his new deal at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Even though a new candidate list will need to be drawn up amid Paratici’s arrival, it is believed ten Hag could still come back on to Tottenham’s radar.

However, if they are to make a move for him, Spurs would now be forced to pay compensation.

The Verdict: Do it Paratici…

After blows involving Conte and Pochettino, you could make the argument that ten Hag is now Tottenham’s best possible managerial solution factoring in chairman Daniel Levy’s requirements.

Even though pundit Kevin Campbell has doubts over whether he would succeed in the Premier League, despite calling him ‘brilliant’ in his role at Ajax, ten Hag does have one big admirer in Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Indeed, Klopp dubbed him ‘one of the most exciting coaching talents in world football’ (Planet Football), and it’s hard to argue given his impressive career average of 2.07 points per match (Transfermarkt).

He may just be Tottenham’s best hope.

Glasgow Rangers legend Ronald de Boer has suggested it could be difficult for the Gers to hold on to manager Steven Gerrard this summer.

The Lowdown: Gerrard linked with exit

Gerrard has enjoyed a hugely successful campaign with the Gers as he led to them to the Premiership title after an unbeaten league season (BBC).

He has therefore attracted interest from sides in the Premier League such as Wolves (The Athletic) and Everton.

The Latest: De Boer worried

De Boer has revealed he is worried about Gerrard leaving Ibrox this summer. He said (via The Daily Record):

“He has done so well and he has improved so many players, guys like Alfredo Morelos, who has done well over two or three years.

“I’m sure he will be on the list of the big Premier League and big clubs across Europe. I’m sure they will be eager to get him and it will be difficult for Rangers to keep him.

“However, Rangers are also a massive club and hopefully he still has ambitions with them.”

The Verdict: Still something to prove

A return to England will be on the cards for Gerrard at some point. After all, he is an Englishman, and as a Liverpool legend, he has been heavily linked with a return to the club (The Mirror). The Premier League in itself is a more attractive proposition than the Premiership.

Having said that, Gerrard has enjoyed success in Glasgow and, after winning the league title, the Gers will have a chance of qualifying for the Champions League group stages. Given all the hard work needed to reach that stage, the 41-year-old will surely want to see how far his side can go in Europe’s elite club competition.

In other news, Rangers have been urged to sign this striker.

Sanchez surprised Bruce hasn’t managed MUFC

Former Premier League manager Lawrie Sanchez has exclusively told Football FanCast that he’s surprised Steve Bruce has never been given the opportunity to manage Manchester United.

The 60-year-old is approaching 1000 games in management in England during a career that spans over four decades.

Bruce has won promotion to the Premier League on numerous occasions, taken Hull to an FA Cup final and last month won his first ever Manager of the Month award in the top-flight.

But despite a glistening managerial career, Bruce has never been in the running to manage the Red Devils.

Bruce won 12 major trophies with United during his playing career, including three FA Cups, and was part of the side that won the first ever Premier League crown back in 1993.

And given that he was a popular face with the United faithful, Sanchez told Football FanCast that he’s surprised Bruce has never managed the club:

“You forget what an influential figure he was at United. Him coming to United probably won them the league. Him and Pallister as centre-halves were the final piece of the jigsaw.

“As much as people write about Cantona and Schmeichel, but for Bruce and Pallister they wouldn’t have won the league.

“I am surprised that Bruce, who has so many games under his belt, wasn’t given a chance at the United job.”

Reed says Levy could appoint Parker

Les Reed told Football FanCast that Daniel Levy would not be scared to appoint Scott Parker as the next Tottenham manager.

The Spurs chairman is reportedly a fan of the Fulham boss, and has been watching his progress at Craven Cottage over recent months.

Parker might have two relegations on his CV but has produced some impressive work in west London despite his failure to guide the Cottagers to Premier League safety this season.

At one stage, his Fulham side looked good to avoid the drop, but two points from their previous 10 matches saw them made an immediate return to the Championship.

Those two points came at Old Trafford and the Emirates, whilst Fulham’s last league victory came at Anfield, proof that Parker can rub it with the best.

High-profile names like Mauricio Pochettino and Antonio Conte appear ahead of Parker in the pecking order to replace Jose Mourinho, but Reed exclusively told Football FanCast that Fulham’s struggle this season won’t put off Levy:

“I could see Daniel putting faith in Scott Parker.

“Daniel is brave, so I could see him not worrying about Fulham, but looking at how did Fulham play? They got off to a bad start, what changes did he make? He changed the entire back four. I think he would look at that and say ‘he’s not afraid of making decisions’.

“All of those things will be really positive because he was a popular player, popular coach and did really well, which is why Daniel was comfortable with Ryan Mason holding the reins.”

Ex-Southampton star questions Bertrand exit

Ryan Bertrand will not start at Leicester City or Arsenal, claims former Southampton midfielder Carlton Palmer.

Bertrand, who was earning £70,000 a week at St. Mary’s, is a free agent this summer and continues to be linked with various clubs.

Arsenal and AC Milan are both said to have an interest in the 31-year-old left-back, but Leicester look to be leading the race for his signature. In fact, according to Football Insider, he has already agreed to join the FA Cup winners.

Palmer, however, is not convinced that a move to any of those teams is a good decision in regards to playing time. He told FFC in an exclusive interview:

“He’s leaving, probably his last big contract, to go and get big money, but he’s not guaranteed first-team football. Why would you do that? Why would you do that?

“I don’t see him playing at any of those places. Any of those teams, he’s just cover and very good cover. But surely you’d want to play?”

As a free transfer, Bertrand has the chance to pick up a large signing-on fee. And at Leicester, he will also have the chance to play in Europe and compete for trophies if this season is anything to go by.

But up against Timothy Castagne, Luke Thomas and James Justin once he is fit again, there certainly are no guarantees that he will be starting week in, week out at the King Power.

Fry’s big Liverpool transfer claim

Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry has told Football FanCast Liverpool only need three additions to challenge at the top end of the Premier League next season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have struggled immensely at times this season.

The Reds drew 1-1 with Newcastle United at the weekend, as Joe Willock scored a last-gasp equaliser to snatch a point for Steve Bruce’s side.

The result has left the club sixth in the Premier League table, four points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, who beat top-four rivals West Ham United on Saturday.

They are 23 points behind leaders Manchester City, a staggering climbdown from last season, when the Reds dropped points in just six games.

The result versus Newcastle means Liverpool have dropped points in 18 games, drawing nine and losing nine.

But Fry believes that the club only have to be active in the transfer window to climb back to where they were last term.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, he said: “I think all Liverpool players have played below the standards they’ve set themselves over the last two years but they’ve had two unbelievable, outstanding years, so they’ve all fallen short of that but I still feel with three or four additions they’ll be challenging for all the things next season.”

Liverpool will not be winning a trophy this season, having been eliminated from the Champions League and the FA Cup, while City won the League Cup over the weekend.
