West Ham fans not confident ahead of Everton clash

Whilst Everton still have an outside chance of finishing in the top four this season, West Ham United continue to look over their shoulder in the Premier League table.

It would take some collapse from this position for the Hammers to be relegated, although defeat against Everton at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon would leave Slaven Bilic’s side vulnerable to the teams below them.

West Ham have struggled to keep strikers fit all season, but in Romelu Lukaku, Everton have the leading marksman in the division this season, with the Belgian international scoring finding the back of the net on 24 occasions in England’s top flight this term.

Everton will also enter the match having won four of their last six in the league, whilst West Ham have lost five of their last seven during a difficult period for the London outfit.

On Friday, West Ham’s official Twitter account posted a tweet asking supporters to ‘make their predictions’ for the clash at the London Stadium this weekend.

There was not a great deal of confidence among the home fans, however, with many predicting that Lukaku would register in an Everton win.

Three strikers West Ham should target before Deadline Day…

Despite Europa League football now out of the question for West Ham, the club still needs to be looking at ways of strengthening the side as much as possible before the closing of the Summer transfer window, especially if they are to ensure they don’t suffer the same fate in domestic competitions.

However, there should still be no issue trying to attract new players. The club has a brand new stadium to show off and with stars like Dimitri Payet plenty of recruitments are going to be interested in signing.

Their Croatian manager has already been busy in the market but with time left in this window, it’ll be a shock if there’s no more incomings.

We certainly think there’s more to come from West Ham this summer and reckon these THREE strikers should be of real interest to the men in claret and blue…

Simone Zaza

The man with the ridiculous penalty run – up at Euro 2016. He may not have done himself many favours with the Italian fans after that showing but Zaza clearly has some talent given the fact he is on Juventus’ books.

How long he stays in Turin is up for debate though especially with Gonzalo Higuain’s arrival, and Slaven Bilic has already admitted a deal for the Italian is very close to being completed.

West Ham like to have a powerful forward up top and look a much more threatening side when Andy Carroll is there to bully defenders.

This occurs far too infrequently for the liking of Hammers fans though and so it would make sense for the club to look for a more reliable powerhouse.

Bony could be ideal, he has Premier League quality and would surely jump at leaving Manchester City.

Mario Mandzukic

The Croatian is similar to Andy Carroll in build but is a better player and has less fitness doubts too.

It would be a real statement concerning West Ham’s ambitions if they could get a man who’s played for Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Juventus in, especially as they aim to crack Europe.

Any move may just be helped by the Hammers’ manager Slaven Bilic as he comes from the same country as the target man.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The Reds headed to Wembley nursing a serious injury headache, with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Darwin Nunez among those ruled out of Jurgen Klopp’s plans. A collection of young stars stepped up to the plate, with eight academy graduates picking up a winners’ medal.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

It was, however, experienced club captain Van Dijk that led by example, with the commanding Dutch defender netting the only goal of the game deep into extra-time. He had already seen one effort chalked off prior to that, but the Netherlands international was not to be denied as he lifted a first piece of silverware as skipper at Anfield.

  • WHAT BELLINGHAM SAID ABOUT VAN DIJK

Several players, many with ties to Liverpool, were quick to salute Van Dijk’s man-of-the-match performance in north London. Wataru Endo and Ibrahima Konate featured in the comments section of a social media post from the towering centre-half, while Real midfielder Bellingham said: “What a player.”

Missing out on signing Brighton star Moises Caicedo should be a massive wake-up call for Man Utd

The Red Devils pursued the Ecuador midfielder when he was 19 but walked away from a potential deal in what now looks like a terrible oversight

Manchester United will come up against Moises Caicedo for the fourth time when they visit Brighton on Thursday, and the midfielder will no doubt be relishing the opportunity having dominated the Red Devils on each previous occasion.

The Ecuador international scored the opening goal in the Seagulls' rampant 4-0 win towards the end of last season, and on the opening day of 2022-23, he masterminded Brighton's 2-1 win at Old Trafford that spoiled Erik ten Hag's competitive debut in charge of United.

He put in another excellent display at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final as Roberto De Zerbi’s side dominated the ball and had the better chances in the 0-0 draw before narrowly losing on penalties.

Watching those matches must have been particularly hard for United’s recruitment department, as the club had followed Caicedo since he was a teenager and were on the verge of signing him from Independiente del Valle in 2021.

GettyMissing out on a star of the future

United eventually backed away from the the deal three weeks before the January transfer window shut, allowing Brighton to roll in on deadline day, paying just £4.5 million to bring the youngster to England.

Two years on, and after Brighton rejected a £70 million bid from Arsenal for the midfielder, it looks like an inspired piece of business, who are the envy of European football when it comes to recruiting top players for low fees.

United, meanwhile, yet again failed to follow their instincts and take a gamble, missing out on a star of the future who could have ran their midfield for the next decade.

AdvertisementGettyPut off by agents' commissions

At the time, United felt the transfer was too complicated to complete as it involved a host of intermediaries and agents all demanding commissions. More than one agency claimed to represent the midfielder, and it was unclear who truly represented him and who was just looking to make a small fortune off the deal. The reported that United felt the deal was “too messy” and described it as a “clusterf*ck”.

While United are not immune to paying large commissions to agents, they do not pay out nearly as much as their rivals. They spent £24m on agents’ fees last year, less than half the amount of Manchester City, and considerably less than Chelsea and Liverpool.

It is perhaps understandable that they were unwilling to pay through the nose on commissions for an untested player who they would likely have had to send out on loan, as Brighton did when they signed him and then promptly sent him to join Belgian side Beerschot.

GettyPaying for their mistake in the long run

Brighton made the most of their previous connections with Independiente, having signed Billy Arce from the Ecuadorian side in 2018. And the agents' fees can’t have been that high. Brighton spent the fourth-lowest amount on agent fees in the Premier League in 2021, a total of £6.2m, contrasting with the £29m United spent that year.

And whatever fee was involved pales in comparison to the amount of money United have paid in overspending on players. The same month they turned down Caicedo, they signed Amad Diallo for £37m. The Ivorian forward has made only three appearances for United since and had a highly disappointing loan spell at Rangers, although he has impressed while on loan at Sunderland in the Championship this season.

United's failure to get a proper holding midfielder after missing out on Caicedo led them to accepting two-and-a-half more years of the infamous Fred and Scott McTominay midfield partnership, until they were left scrambling around for a proper midfielder towards the end of the 2022 summer window, leading them to sign Casemiro for £60 million.

While United fans have fallen in love with the serial winner from Brazil, he turned 31 in February and realistically only has two or three more seasons left at the peak of his powers. When he does leave, he will have little sell-on value. The opposite, though, can be said of Caicedo, who signed a new deal with Brighton until 2027 and could command a transfer fee as high as £80m when he eventually moves on.

Getty ImagesSimilarities with missing out on Haaland

Caicedo is far from the only high-profile youngster United have pursued but failed to land. They had followed Erling Haaland since 2018 when he was playing for Molde, where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was manager, but were too slow to act, and the precociously talented striker, advised by Mino Raiola, went to Red Bull Salzburg instead.

When Solskjaer was managing United a year later, the club made a big move to sign him, with the Norwegian coach meeting his compatriot Haaland and his representatives in December 2019. Two weeks later, though, Borussia Dortmund won the race for the striker, signing him for around £17m.

United had bad memories of dealing with Raiola from their experience with Paul Pogba, and according to reports the agent insisted on inserting a buyout clause into any potential deal, allowing the representatives to control any future sale, rather than United.

Dortmund were more flexible about inserting a buyout clause into their transfer, which led to Man City signing Haaland for only £51m in the summer of 2021. Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke later admitted the clause was a determining factor in Haaland heading to Germany rather than Manchester at the time.

– Sentimento triste. Ainda bem que está acontecendo no começo do ano. Campeonato estadual.

West Indies Women determined to break semi-final hoodoo

Both New Zealand Women and West Indies Women know the feeling of having dominated the Women’s World T20 for most parts, only to falter when it matters most. But it’s a record they are desperate to shed, West Indies a bit more than their opponents after having missed a berth in the final on three previous occasions.”Today at training I actually said in the meeting that this is the fourth time we are in the semi-finals but this time around it is not actually against Australia, so that’s maybe a plus for us,” Stafanie Taylor, the West Indies captain, said when reminded of their unenviable record. “We definitely want to cross this barrier. We’ve been here so many times to know how to approach it. Today in training, the vibes were fantastic and that’s what I want to see, going into tomorrow’s game. We just hope that we can put our best foot forward and go with all the heart.”Taylor and Deandra Dottin were at the forefront of West Indies’ batting revival, against India, which played a big part in securing their semi-final berth. The batting has revolved around these two, even as the others haven’t exactly set the stage alight. It was the same pair that was instrumental in handing West Indies a win in their only match against New Zealand at the World T20, in 2012, even though New Zealand lead the head-to-head 8-3.Taylor wasn’t too perturbed by the record, and insisted the only thing in their focus was to emulate the Under-19 boys. “We’ve been talking about it from the time the U-19 team won the tournament,” Taylor said. “It’s more like an inspiration for us. This is like more drive to go out there and actually do the job. That both the men’s and the women’s team are in the semi-final and playing at the same ground is actually fantastic. Everybody is just behind us a hundred percent and given us good feedback. It is going to be a mental thing tomorrow. 75 percent of the game is actually played there and I think, on that day whoever is calmer and more composed will win. If we try to do that, we definitely can pull this off.”New Zealand are in red-hot form, having bossed their way in the group stages with four wins in as many matches. In the previous World T20 in Bangladesh, they missed the semi-finals on net run rate, but this group under Suzie Bates seems to have found a successful formula based around spin, even as their batting line-up have put together tall scores on sluggish wickets. On Thursday, they could relish batting on a Wankhede deck that has been a bowler’s nightmare in the competition so far.”We’ve actually been pretty fortunate with the grounds we’ve played on,” Bates, the second-highest run-getter in the competition, said. “The wickets have been great to bat on and we’ve shown that with some of our scores. I’ve heard that Mumbai is a good batting track, but we haven’t played here before. So, just really excited. Hopefully, it’s fast and has a bit of pace on it. Hopefully, there are some big scores out there. I haven’t had any issues with the wickets we’ve played on. We’ve been able to play our shots and hit across the line. Hopefully, tomorrow will be the same as well.”A feature of this New Zealand side is their ruthlessness that has brought about a different dimension to their already robust game. With nine wins in their last 10 T20Is, they are the form side, but are well aware that while a place in the final has eluded them since 2010. Haidee Tiffin, the coach, explained why the brand of cricket, inspired by Brendon McCullum, has played a key role in their rise.New Zealand captain Suzie Bates is the second-highest run-getter in the tournament•IDI/Getty Images

“As the coach, it’s the brand of cricket we want to play. Like the men – an attractive, aggressive style,” Tiffin explained. “We’ve got players who can do that, whether with bat, ball or on the field. It’s about not only doing the basics well, but also expressing ourselves and allowing the girls to be free. As Kiwis, we’re a sporting nation, we get inspired by being out and playing any sport, to be honest. We’re here to do a job and I really want to girls to express themselves.”For some players, it’s not about hitting over the top. It’s more about finesse and accessing areas of the ground in their style. We’ve got players who can put up a good total, or defend a good total. I certainly encourage the girls to express themselves. We’re not looking too far ahead. We’ve got a job to do, and both teams are staring at zero.”Looking ahead to the clash, Bates also underlined the importance of not being sucked into the occasion, but insisted her team was on a mission to do the country proud. “This team dedicates any performance to the country. We’re representing our country,” she said. “There’s been amazing number of people who’ve represented both the White Ferns and Black Caps and certainly Martin Crowe, who recently passed away.”We’ve certainly drawn upon inspiration from players that have gone before. We certainly respect the past, but with regards to whom we dedicate our performance to, it’s pretty easy to say that we are representing our country and we are very proud to do that.”She also revealed tips from McCullum could serve as an inspiration for her team to emulate. “Brendon is from Otago, and I’m from Otago, so he’s always been, over the years, willing to talk about cricket and his leadership style,” Bates said. “A number of girls, during the New Zealand cricket awards, spoke to him briefly and the way he went about his cricket at the end his career and during the World Cup campaign was an inspiration. We had drawn upon a little bit of inspiration from the way he got the guys to go out there and express themselves, and we’re trying to do that in this tournament.”

Starc and Hazlewood polish off Essex

Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood shared seven wickets between them as the Australians won by 169 runs on the fourth afternoon in Chelmsford

Australia quicks lift after news of Harris retirement

As confirmation of Ryan Harris’ retirement filtered around Chelmsford, Jesse Ryder was collaring Josh Hazlewood for 26 runs from the young paceman’s first over. The Australians looked understandably flat, having taken in an emotional address from Harris barely an hour before.Professional sport, though, is about pushing through all distractions and preparing for what lies ahead. The fact that Harris will not be going there with them made it imperative for others to step forward, and Hazlewood duly regathered himself after Ryder’s early blows to help round up Essex and complete a second comfortable Australian victory in as many tour matches.Mitchell Starc was also effective, and if there was a slightly apologetic air about the way the Australians celebrated their wickets, it was at least partly because they arrived with increasing regularity in the afternoon. Even Nathan Lyon managed to winkle out the last man Aron Nijjar, albeit after he had been struck into the radio commentary box by Tom Moore and finished the match with figures of 1 for 201.Michael Clarke, who took a tremendously sharp slips catch to dismiss James Foster, also gave equal bowling time to his two allrounders Shane Watson and Mitchell Marsh. As in the first innings, Watson looked the more miserly, Marsh potentially the more explosive. It will be up to the selection chairman Rod Marsh and coach Darren Lehmann to deliberate on how to split the pair ahead of the Cardiff Test.Ryder’s early fireworks obscured the fact that Essex had two players unable to bat. In addition to Nick Browne, the first-innings centurion Tom Westley was nursing bruised ribs sustained during his 144 on day two. That innings provided some of Ryder’s motivation but, after Hazlewood struck first by pinning Jaik Mickleburgh in front of the stumps, Starc proved the unsustainable nature of the New Zealander’s assault by plucking out middle stump.Ravi Bopara and Ryan ten Doeschate prospered for a time, again targeting Lyon’s spin, but when Starc struck Essex’s captain so palpably lbw that he virtually walked, the match tilted swiftly. Hazlewood was able to exploit a modicum of variable bounce in a manner that any tall seamer would have been proud of, and the end arrived before tea.Clarke, who had made some useful second-innings runs to complete his own preparation for Cardiff, declared the Australians to be in fine fettle. They had of course played two Tests in the West Indies before reaching English shores, and there is no question about the 2015 Australians having a better lead-in than those of 2013.”I think we’re as well prepared as we can be for this first Test match,” Clarke said. “I think individuals have got what they needed and I think the build up now is really exciting for the players. We’ve needed these two tour games, they’ve both been a success, we’ve had two wins in two games in the UK so far, so that’s a real positive and that was our main focus, so we can grab this momentum and take it into the first Test match now.”
