AVFC: Sky Sports share Todd Cantwell update

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth believes it could cost Aston Villa upwards of £40m-£50m for Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell.

The Lowdown: Grealish exit

Villa are expected to go after Cantwell due to Jack Grealish’s pending Villa exit.

Fabrizio Romano tweeted late on Wednesday evening that the 25-year-old will have a Manchester City medical on Thursday morning ahead of a £100m move.

Grealish has signed a contract until 2026 with City and a move is set to be the most expensive player in Premier League history.

The Latest: Cantwell claim

Sheth was speaking live on Sky Sports on Wednesday, cited by Football Daily, where he addressed a potential swoop for Cantwell.

He admitted this summer would be the optimum time for Norwich to maximise Cantwell’s valuation, should he not wish to sign a new Carrow Road deal.

Sheth then said ‘I’ve heard’ it would take a figure of upwards of £40m-£50m before Norwich would consider selling the 23-year-old.

The Verdict: Villa need to make their minds up

If Villa are happy to smash their club record for Cantwell, then they should make their move relatively quickly, especially with the new season just around the corner.

However, if they aren’t, perhaps it would be wise to explore the European market, as they did for Leon Bailey.

Time could be crucial when it comes to landing Grealish’s replacement, so that’s why Villa need to act relatively quickly over the coming days – the longer it drags on, the more desperate they become and selling clubs’ negotiating stances will get tougher and tougher.

Pundit expects Wilfried Zaha to stay at Crystal Palace

Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge has told Football FanCast that he’d be surprised to see Wilfried Zaha leave Crystal Palace this summer.

Palace’s talisman, who scored a career-best 11 Premier League goals last term and is already off the mark in pre-season, was the subject of interest from Tottenham and Everton earlier this summer.

Zaha has been linked away from the club in each of the previous two years, and in an interview with The Times, the 28-year-old once more expressed his desire to leave the Selhurst Park outfit this window.

With just two years remaining on his contract, Zaha could be available to sign at a cut-price, but has already knuckled down since the arrival of Patrick Vieira and looks likely to get a move.

The Eagles boss has been a busy man in the transfer window, making three impressive signings, including Joachim Andersen from Lyon.

And whilst Palace are highly unlikely to be challenging for a European place next season, Bridge reckons that the arrival of a new ambitious manager with fresh faces could meet Zaha’s demands.

He told FFC:

“I’d be very surprised to see Zaha leave, he would probably like a new challenge, but at the same time, he’s kind of got one.

“He’s got Patrick Vieira coming in, Joachim Andersen has just joined from Lyon, Olise, they want to sign more players.”

Villa ready to make record Grealish offer

An update has emerged on Jack Grealish, regarding Aston Villa’s attempts to keep him at the club.

What’s the talk?

According to The Sun, Aston Villa are ready to make Jack Grealish the highest-paid player in the history of the club by offering him £200k-per-week. The report claims Villa are prepared to make him one of the highest earners in the Premier League to tie him down to a new deal.

Manchester City are keen on signing him this summer and are willing to offer a British record £100m bid for his services, with the champions said to be hopeful of securing an agreement with the Villans.

Fans will surely be buzzing

Villa fans will surely be buzzing following this big update. The club are showing that they are serious about keeping Grealish at the club and are not going to be bullied by Manchester City into parting ways with him. They are set to flex their financial muscle with this record contract offer and, hopefully, it will be enough to convince the local lad to commit his future to Villa Park.

If Johan Lange and Dean Smith harbour any ambitions of challenging for Europa League or Champions League football next season then keeping hold of the mercurial midfielder could hold the key. He was sensational for the club last term in the Premier League, providing six goals and 10 assists from out wide despite only starting 24 matches.

Ex-Villa midfielder Kieran Richardson once lauded the “phenomenal” wizard and highlighted the size of his legs as something that caught his eye training with him.

He said: “Jack Grealish, he’s a phenomenal talent. When I was there (Villa) playing he was coming through and you could see from the get-go he was a top, top player. The way he can just ghost past players, he’s so strong, he rides challenges. Even if you knock him down he’ll get back up and keep going, he won’t shy away from anything.

“He’s very confident on the ball, he’ll take the ball whenever he can. He’s a top player and the way he’s built as well, he’s massive, his legs are absolutely massive. Even when I first saw him I was like ‘This guy’s a unit’.”

The England international averaged a sublime WhoScored rating of 7.56 for Villa in the Premier League. Ollie Watkins’ score of 7.18 was the closest any other claret and blue player came to him, which emphasises just how important he is to the team.

This is why fans will be over the moon with the club’s perseverance over a deal to keep Grealish in the long-term, rather than bowing down to Pep Guardiola’s team. It is now down to the player himself to decide what he wants to do before the end of the window, but Villa have done all they can so far.

England’s forthcoming series against South Africa, the most enticing contest in the near future, has been given an extra edge after the teams swapped places in the latest ICC rankings. After their 2-0 series victory over New Zealand, England have leapfrogged their next opponent into third place in the table. They were on 108 points at the start of the series but the draw at Lord’s followed by victories at Old Trafford and Trent Bridge boosted them to 110, just one point behind India, who retain second spot. Australia, currently 1-0 up against West Indies, remain well ahead of the chasing pack.England could have ended this series in second position had they won all three Tests, but can still finish the season ahead of India if they beat South Africa and India do not win the series in Sri Lanka starting next month. However, if South Africa edge the four-match series, beginning at Lord’s on July 10, they could be the one to go into second depending on how the Sri Lanka-India contest pans out.New Zealand remain in seventh place, 11 points ahead of West Indies, but that gap could close if West Indies can level the series against Australia with victory in the final Test in Barbados.

Celtic: Postecoglou wants Christie’s contract extended

Ange Postecoglou wants Ryan Christie’s Celtic contract to be extended, according to journalist Ekrem Konur.

The Lowdown: Christie’s situation

It emerged back in April that Christie has less time on his Hoops contract than many thought. The 26-year-old penned a Parkhead extension back in 2018, however, that deal expires in January, not next summer.

That means that the attacking midfielder can now talk to clubs outside of Scotland ahead of a potential pre-contract agreement.

As we know, that is yet to materialise and Christie’s situation remains the same, but it seems as if Postecoglou wants to tie the Scot down to a new Celtic Park contract.

The Latest: Konur’s claim

According to Konur, who was the first to share Celtic’s interest in Aurelio Buta last week, ‘Postecoglou wants Christie’s contract extended’.

Konur adds that talks have been held with Christie’s representatives. The midfielder’s current deal is worth £12,000-a-week.

The Verdict: All down to Christie…

Christie appears to be a man in demand this summer, and ultimately, he’ll decide what he wants to do with his contract running down.

Reports earlier this month suggested that Al-Hilal were poised to offer the midfielder a life-changing deal, whereas rumours before then claimed Sampdoria were keen on his services.

Celtic could do with knowing Christie’s stance on his future as soon as possible, as the Hoops could then look at selling this summer instead of losing him on a free in January.

وحسب شبكة “ESPN” العالمية، فإن آرسنال أجرى مُحادثات مع ممثلي ديبالا في الساعات القليلة الماضية.

Paratici now wants Nuno for Spurs

According to talkSPORT, Tottenham Hotspur have now set their sights on appointing former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo, with Fabio Paratici specifically favouring a move for the 47-year-old.

The Lowdown: Spurs manager quest, will it ever end?

Since Jose Mourinho’s dismissal from the job in April, Spurs have been on the quest to appoint a new manager as his eventual replacement.

Many names have entered and duly exited the fray over the last two months, with Julian Nagelsmann and Brendan Rodgers the early favourites.

Repeated Spurs manager talks have broken down in the last few weeks, with moves for Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso all failing to result in an appointment.

The Latest: Nuno on the radar…

As per talkSPORT, the club’s new managing director Paratici, who has been tasked with ending the managerial circus at Tottenham, has now set his sights on Nuno, who left Wolves a month ago.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-2/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Portuguese guided Wolves to the Europa League quarter-finals in 2019/20 as well as helping the Molineux outfit to two seventh-placed Premier League finishes during his tenure.

Paratici is now an admirer and is eyeing an appointment for the 47-year-old in north London, but fellow Spurs chiefs aren’t in agreement, with talkSPORT claiming that those within the club prefer a renewed attempt for former club favourite Pochettino.

The Verdict: Very credible candidate…

Nuno worked wonders at Wolves during his time in the Midlands and shaped them into a very competitive team, despite an underwhelming 2020/21 campaign when they finished 13th.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is among his many admirers, with the Spaniard calling him ‘excellent’ back in 2018 (Express and Star). Also, talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan tipped Nuno as a fantastic candidate for the role  at the very beginning of Tottenham’s manager search, branding him an ‘outstanding manager’.

We believe he should, at the very least, be considered by the Tottenham hierarchy.

Styris inspires New Zealand to thrilling victory at Sharjah

Sri Lanka will not often lose games when Muttiah Muralitharan takes five wickets for nine runs, but they did lose one such match against New Zealand at Sharjah on Tuesday.New Zealand started less than ideally, the in-form Nathan Astle being caught behind off Nuwan Zoysa’s first delivery. Chris Nevin, the other opener, brushed aside the setback and proceeded to cut and drive Chaminda Vaas with panache. Zoysa, far more impressive on the day, pulled things back by having Craig McMillan caught off a mistimed pull at long leg.Stephen Fleming started shakily but soon settled down, steering his side past those two initial hiccups and fabricating a stand with Nevin. But Sri Lanka, after the drinks break, brought a dual-pronged spin attack into play, and since one of those prongs was Muttiah Muralitharan, something was bound to snap. The batsmen started to look suspect against spin, pushing and prodding indecisively. Muralitharan feeds insatiably on such mindsets, and he had Fleming (34, 46b, 4×4) in his second over. Extracting his customary prodigious turn, Muralitharan completely foxed Fleming. The southpaw could not withdraw his bat in time and almost guided the ball to slip, ending a partnership of 55.In his next over, Murali induced a pull from Scott Styris, the ball turning enough to balloon into the air and then down the throat of Vaas on the mid-wicket fence. New Zealand were 92 for four, struggling to keep afloat.Nevin, who had played seam with calm elan, had appeared in obvious discomfort against Murali. He fell in an unfortunate manner, though. A bat-pad appeal was referred to the third umpire; the replay showed that the catch was cleanly taken, but that the ball had missed the bat. The third umpire, however, was required to rule only upon the legality of the catch, so Nevin (45, 5bb, 5×5) trudged back to the pavilion.More drama reared its head. In the 26th over, Sri Lanka appealed for a catch against Mathew Sinclair, and umpire Srinivas Venkataraghavan acceded. But Sinclair stood his ground, indicating that the ball had hit his arm, whereupon Venkataraghavan called over the Sri Lankan skipper and reversed his decision – a phenomenon as common as hen’s teeth in cricket. Sanath Jayasuriya, to his credit, took the reversal sportingly. The overs between 30 and 40 tumbled past in a hurry, the spinners delivering the ball and striding quickly back to their mark. The batsmen found themselves unable to force the pace; 34 runs and one wicket came off those 10 overs, the wicket that of Matthew Sinclair (28, 55b), caught at short third man trying the reverse-sweep.A late charge came from Jacob Oram, who struck 46 (33b, 5×4, 2×6) and helped New Zealand past the 200-run mark to 218 for eight. For Sri Lanka, the undisputed star was one familiar to that role – Muralitharan, whose figures of 10-3-9-5 were, to put it mildly, fantastic.Sri Lanka lost Jayasuriya early to Daryl Tuffey, but Sangakkara and Marvan Atapattu played sensible cricket, rotating the strike and dispatching poor bowling for four. Atapattu in particular played with elegant fluidity, merely stroking the ball for it to reach the fence.Sangakkara’s dismissal thus came against the run of play. Having just hit Ian Butler for four, Sangakkara (23, 41b, 4×4) looked to pull a short ball on leg-stump. The timing, however, was off, and Tuffey took a simple catch at square leg.The runs continued to flow, steadily rather than spectacularly. Atapattu, who has played the sheet-anchor role for his side so many times, appeared to don the mantle again today. He survived a sharp chance at point, and Fleming not only grassed it but injured himself in the process. Barring that minor blip, Atapattu batted sedately, playing according to the need of the situation.Mahela Jayawardene (38, 51b, 4×4) was dismissed with the score on 125, caught at long-off in going for an expansive drive. The really big wicket, however, was that of Atapattu, the set batsman. Trying to go for an over-the-top shot in the 36th over, he only succeeded in spooning it for Ian Butler at mid-on to hold a fine catch. The required run-rate, at this stage, had crept past the six-per-over mark, and when Romesh Kaluwitharana and Russell Arnold entered the final 10-over stretch, they needed 7.2 runs per over. The pressure, unsurprisingly, got to the batsmen, and Kaluwitharana was the one to succumb, playing across the line to be leg-before-wicket to Astle. The 45th over saw both Upul Chandana and Vaas fall to Styris in trying to go for the big hit, and when Arnold (24, 44b, 2×4) was caught behind in the next over, Sri Lanka were staring down the barrel. Muralitharan holed out soon after, and Sri Lanka had 12 to get off the final over with just one wicket standing. It was the wicket that fell ultimately, giving New Zealand a slender 11-run win that looked improbable earlier in the day. Sri Lanka still top the points table after this win on the basis of Net Run Rate, and Pakistan are now under even more pressure to win their next outing in this Sharjah Cup.
