Reports coming from South Africa that Worcestershire’s attempts to sign Allan Donald as a replacement for their overseas player Andy Bichel had run into trouble have been dismissed by the county as no more than a technical hitch. Worcestershire have gone through the right channels, but the information had not permeated to all levels of the United Cricket Board of South Africa’s administration.Bichel was selected for Australia’s proposed series against Pakistan in June and Donald has been signed on a short-term contract as his replacement. However, Gerald Majola, chief executive of the UCBSA, admitted that he had been unaware of the situation with Worcestershire until the announcement that Donald had signed for them.”There is a very specific clause in the players contracts that precludes them from working for another employer without permission, and Allan hasn’t spoken to me,” Majola said.He was also unaware that Donald has been turning out for Birmingham League club Knowle and Dorridge as a professional. “That’s news to me. He should have sought permission,” Majola said before conceding that it is not out of the question that the bowler might yet play county cricket.”If he asks permission then I will consult the national physiotherapist Craig Smith to get a report on his physical fitness. If Craig says he is fit then we would consider releasing him.”The main concern of the South Africans is that Donald, at 36 years of age, should conserve his energies to spearhead their attack in the World Cup that takes place on home soil in 2003. Similar concerns were expressed when captain Shaun Pollock was allowed to play for Warwickshire this season.Speaking to CricInfo, Worcestershire chief executive Mark Newton is confident that the matter will be resolved shortly. “We have done everything we were supposed to do and expect confirmation of Allan’s availability at any time now.”It appears that Donald himself spoke to the new chairman of selectors, Omar Henry, while the club contacted Brian Basson, the director of cricket operations in South Africa. However, a breakdown in communications at the UCBSA meant that the chief executive was not fully apprised of the situation when making his comments.

Lyanco completa 20 anos nesta quarta-feira.

O jogador quer fazer história no clube:

Klopp instrumental in Van Dijk decision

Jurgen Klopp ‘increased the pressure’ on Virgil van Dijk to sit out this summer’s European Championships.

That’s according to Friday’s print edition of Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

Former PFA Player of the Year Van Dijk has been out of action since mid-October after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Liverpool initially coped well in his absence, topping the Premier League at Christmas, but Klopp’s side unravelled at the turn of the year and now trail Manchester City, who have regained their title, by a whopping 23 points.

However, the Reds were boosted this week by the news that Van Dijk has abandoned his Euro 2020 hopes in favour of readying himself for pre-season.

The latest

De Telegraaf claimed (via Sport Witness) that Klopp helped to force Van Dijk’s decision and adopted a deliberate media strategy of raising doubts about the centre-back’s availability.

Whilst it was unlikely that he would feature in the group stage of the competition, which will see the Oranje face Ukraine, Austria and North Macedonia, he could have been in contention for the knockout stages if Frank de Boer’s side made it that far.

The verdict

This was clearly a difficult decision for Van Dijk as the captain of his country, who have not been to a major tournament since the 2014 World Cup, but the nightmare scenario for Liverpool was the 29-year-old’s progress being undone by an all-too-hasty return to action.

The Netherlands, for their part, can still call upon the likes of Matthijs de Ligt, Stefan de Vrij and Nathan Ake at centre-back, but they may sorely miss Van Dijk’s leadership during the summer showcase.

In other news, Liverpool are set to do battle with another Premier League club for this player’s signature.

Ex-Aston Villa star shares Davis experience

In an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern, former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has shared his experience of seeing Keinan Davis up close for the first time in training after returning to Bodymoor Heath.

Davis, a product of Bodymoor Heath, has worked his way into Villa’s first team and has been Dean Smith’s second-choice striker this season.

With Wesley having been unavailable following the serious injury he picked up last term, Davis has been deputising for Ollie Watkins.

And, in that deputy role, the 23-year-old has managed to come up with a couple of important contributions of late, including a goal against West Brom and assist versus Fulham.

For Hendrie, he is a player who has always had talent, talent which Villa supporters are now starting to see.

Speaking exclusively to TT about what he remembers from the first time he had a good look at Davis, the ex-Villa player said:

“I went back, a few years back now, and I went in and just watched. It was actually when Steve Bruce was managing and I watched the training.

“Kevin MacDonald was at the club at the time and he was working with a lot of the younger lads that were certainly pushing for first-team recognition. And Keinan was one of those players.

“I went and watched a game. It was the first time I’d actually seen Keinan and I thought to myself, ‘certainly with lots of coaching and guidance, he’ll be a player. He will be a player.’ “

If Davis’ last few performances are anything to go by, then the 23-year-old is a player who certainly has something to offer.

Villa ace Bertrand Traore was awful vs Man City

After the whole debacle of the European Super League, attentions turned back to matters on the pitch on Wednesday night when Aston Villa took on Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Dean Smith’s side came into the game on the back of a 2-1 defeat to champions Liverpool last time out, but any notion of poor form or a lack of confidence went straight out the window after John McGinn struck inside about 20 seconds.

But City turned things around with goals in either half, and Matty Cash’s reckless sending off for two yellow cards certainly put a dampener on any hopes of Villa claiming a huge victory.

While Cash certainly let Smith down by getting himself sent off when Villa had the man advantage following John Stones’ own red card, Bertrand Traore also produced a shocking display.

The winger was urged to be dropped for the game against Pep Guardiola’s side here on FFC, but the Villa boss kept faith in him, and sadly it didn’t pay off.

While City unsurprisingly dominated the ball, Traore just couldn’t get himself involved in the game, ending the match with fewer touches of the ball than goalkeeper Emi Martinez.

As per Sofascore, he had no shots on target, provided no crosses, and completed just ten passes in the 75 minutes that he was on the pitch – essentially, Traore was just a passenger that Villa carried, and his frustrating tendency to keep wanting the ball on his left foot really limited both him and his side going forward.

And, writing in his post-match player ratings for The Birmingham Mail, Ashley Preece gave him the second-lowest score of a five, saying: “Worked well with Cash after Villa had scored with the pair doubling up on Zinchenko. However, it was a real struggle for Traore as it was for most of Villa’s players after their opener.

“Traore showed some flashes with cross-field passes and some neat touches but City were always in control with El Ghazi drafted on for him on 75 minutes. Lacked a cutting edge again, sadly.”

With no goals in his last eight Premier League games now, it’s surely become time for Smith to make a ruthless call on Traore and drop him from the team and just take him out the firing line.

Meanwhile, Villa have been handed a major transfer boost over this player…

John Terry to Sheffield United a risk

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Sheffield United striker Brian Deane has questioned his old club’s reported interest in John Terry.

The Yorkshire outfit are on the lookout for a permanent successor to Chris Wilder following his exit last month and it appears their search has taken them to Terry.

According to the Mirror, the Aston Villa assistant head coach is on Sheffield United’s shortlist to replace their former boss as the club prepares for life back in the Championship.

Terry has spoken in the past about his desire to become a manager, meaning this opportunity in the Bramall Lane dugout may appeal to him.

Deane, however, has sent a word of warning to his old side, picking up on Terry’s lack of managerial experience. On the subject, Deane told FFC:

“The club has to decide what direction they want to go in and part of that direction is, you know, do they want to go down a route where more of the club structure and infrastructure is club owned?

“Do they want to go down the route of kind of giving somebody an opportunity to come in and manage their club, you know, with relatively no understanding or no experience of the area, of what the fans expect, what kind of football? I don’t know what kind of football John Terry likes.”

The Mirror also reports that Villa are well aware of Terry’s ambitions to manage one day and will support him in his efforts to land the top job in a dugout, so it should not be too hard for Sheffield United to get him out of Villa Park.
