West Brom fans upset after Louie Barry update

[ad_pod ]Express & Star confirmed on Friday afternoon that 16-year-old Louie Barry had left the club after rejecting the offer of a three-year contract. The same publication revealed towards the end of last month that a new deal was on the table for the youngster and the club apparently remained confident that he’d stay. However, their worst fears have now been realised with the youngster departing. And reacting to the news on Twitter, fans were absolutely enraged that he was leaving the Hawthorns. One supporter claimed they may as well close the academy whilst another said it was pointless considering the compensation fees received for players was so low.Other supporters took fire at the player as one suggested Barry had no loyalty. A further fan took issue by suggesting that money talks and he was moving simply for a higher salary.

The teenager has been linked with a move to PSG in the past and if he goes abroad, Albion would receive a sum of £235,000.

Barry has also been attracting the interest of Barcelona and now he’s left, will be free to play elsewhere.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Leeds set to make poor Wilks decision

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to reports from Football Insider, Leeds United are willing to let Mallik Wilks join Barnsley this summer if they land their preferred targets.

The young winger spent last season out on loan at Doncaster Rovers, where he was mightily impressive as he contributed to 22 goals.

What’s the story then?

Football Insider are reporting that Leeds are willing to allow the 20-year-old to leave Elland Road before next season.

This would allow him to hone his skills at a higher level, but his performances for Doncaster last term suggest that he is ready to play for the Elland Road outfit in 2019/20.

Should keep him

It’s no secret that Marcelo Bielsa wants to strengthen the wide areas this summer, and letting Wilks leave is seemingly counter-productive.

Rumours have been rampant that the Whites are targeting Ryan Kent and Jack Harrison as potential solutions to their left-wing problem, but they’ve both already proven that they aren’t that effective in the Championship.

Harrison only contributed to seven goals last term, while Kent’s numbers during his previous spell in the Championship were far from impressive.

These two loan targets may be proven quantities, but the only thing they’ve proven at this level is mediocrity.

On the other hand, Wilks flourished in League One and if he can carry those types of performances through to the Championship he could be a key man for the Whites.

It makes next to no sense for Bielsa to overlook a 20-year-old who had a phenomenal season last time out. 14 goals and eight assists speak for themselves, and Wilks was one of the most potent attacking threats in League One as well as one of the most effective dribblers.

The Argentine hasn’t been hesitant to bring players in from out of the cold in the past. Mateusz Klich was out of favour at Leeds when he was loaned to FC Utrecht in 2018, but last term he was the only player to start every league game following the arrival of the South American manager.

The Verdict: Should Everton pursue Diego Llorente or focus on Kurt Zouma?

[ad_pod ]

It has been reported by Basque news outlet noticias de Gipuzkoa that Everton are the club most interested in Real Sociedad centre-back Diego Llorente, who is also on the radar of Merseyside rivals Liverpool.

The report states that the 25-year-old has a €50m release clause in his contract with the Spanish side, although Real Sociedad won’t ‘refer’ to it as he seeks a move away from La Liga.

The Toffees are seemingly in the market for a centre-back with veteran Phil Jagielka’s contract set to expire soon, and loan hero Kurt Zouma returning to Chelsea.

It may be hard to get the Frenchman back on a permanent deal as the Blues have been hit with a transfer ban, but it isn’t impossible.

So, should Everton push on with their pursuit of Llorente, or put all their eggs into the Zouma basket? Football FanCast’s writers have their say…

Matt Dawson

“I’ve heard some very good things about Llorente but it remains to be seen whether he’d cut in the Premier League. Zouma, on the other hand, is a proven top-flight central defender. He improved Everton’s defence significantly this term and developed a solid partnership alongside Michael Keane. Therefore, the Toffees must do everything they can to bring him back to Goodison.”

Jack Saville

“With a history of playing for Real Madrid, it’s clear that Llorente fits the Brands profile. We’ve already seen through Zouma, Andre Gomes and Lucas Digne that he is keen on targeting players with rich footballing backgrounds, so it’s no surprise to see him lining up another coup for the club. But after watching Zouma enjoy such a brilliant season at Goodison, the club must do everything in their power to land him on a permanent basis. If Chelsea refuse to sell due to the restrictions of their transfer ban, however, Llorente would be a perfect alternative.”

Harry Sherlock

“Zouma knows Everton inside out and Everton know him. The only drawback here is Chelsea’s potential transfer ban, with the Blues potentially deciding to keep him in their squad for the 2019-20 season. As it is, he’d be the better addition than Llorente but there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a back-up. If Maurizio Sarri and co decide to play hardball, Everton may have no other choice but to land the Spaniard.”

Levy time: Sessegnon sets heart on Tottenham move

[ad_pod ]

Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon has told the club he wants to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer, per The Guardian.

What’s the word?

The versatile full-back, who can also play as a winger, has a contract that expires next summer.

And the report claims that he has told the Cottagers he will not be renewing that deal following their relegation to the Championship and has instead set his heart on linking up with Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs.

The Argentine, who guided his club to a top-four finish in the Premier League and to the Champions League final, hopes that the club can complete a deal for the 19-year-old by the beginning of July, as he wants Sessegnon to play a part in pre-season training.

Levy time

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is about to take Fulham to task.

With the England Under-21 international showing his hand, Spurs have a unique opportunity to drive the price down.

The report claims that Fulham hope to receive £45m for the youngster, who made a total of 38 appearances in 2018/19.

However, Spurs are not said to be willing to pay over £25m and one feels that even that price could fall following his declaration that he will be moving on.

It is harsh for Fulham, who face a season in the Championship without perhaps their most saleable asset.

But this is where Levy thrives, in securing deals for knockdown prices.

Expect that to happen here; Fulham, really, are powerless. If they resist Spurs’ overtures they risk Sessegnon leaving on a free transfer next summer.

They had better take whatever Levy offers them, then, or have him snatch the star away for absolutely nothing in a season’s time.

Matias Vecino would be a top summer signing for Tottenham

Wow, Tottenham Hotspur are in a Champions League final. You’ll probably still be celebrating that while reading this but just to read that sentence again must be nice. Milk it, ladies and gentlemen, milk it for literally all you can.

Obviously, it now seems churlish to even talk about the problems in play at the club right now after a fairly disappointing domestic campaign but, clearly, there are issues.

Indeed, Spurs are known for struggling without talisman Harry Kane and Heung Min-Son, which is something they will look to work on this summer. With that in mind, reports suggest that Tottenham will have a tasty budget to utilise during the summer period as Mauricio Pochettino may finally be entrusted to make a real difference to the club.

Clearly, he is in search of a number of top players this summer, those fitting to make Tottenham genuine contenders in every competition they play in next season.

So the March rumour linking (as per CalcioMercato) Inter Milan’s Matias Vecino in that case, makes complete sense, given the midfield quality he possesses. Vecino, who was signed for £21.6 million back in 2017 (as per Transfermarkt), will be a familiar name to Tottenham fans seeing as he scored against them in the Champions League earlier on this season.

Back then, it was suggested that Spurs were put off by the Serie A giants’ asking price but the report from the Sun recently claiming the club would have a lot more money to spend this summer might indeed change things. Who knows, really, but he’s exactly the kind of player Tottenham should be targetting.

That performance alone from Vecino may have been enough to encourage Tottenham to spend big on the 27-year-old this summer, given how much he could improve their midfield.

Whilst Moussa Sissoko has hit new heights this season, the likes of Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama have really failed to make an impact and hence could be leaving this summer. So, perhaps Vecino could be the man to line up alongside Sissoko in the middle of the park, with the perfect balance of attack and defence.

In what is bound to be a period of change for Tottenham, the capture of Matias Vecino could leave fans very happy, especially after seeing the season he has had. From the centre of midfield, he has played 37 times, scoring five goals and assisting a further four as well.

Tottenham’s engine room just needs a refresh and we can’t think of a player more suited to the project currently in play in North London.

In terms of contribution, it is clear to see that the Uruguay international could fit very nicely into Tottenham’s squad.

The Chalkboard: Nuno Santo’s stubbornness will hold back Wolves

[ad_pod ]

Since joining Wolves, Nuno Santo has had wave after wave of praise. But does he actually still have a lot to prove?

There’s no denying his achievements in the English game so far. He took Wolves up in some style last term and they’ve had a tremendous first campaign back in the Premier League.

At the moment they sit seventh and were just moments away from reaching an FA Cup final too.

However, there are some clear issues Nuno has to iron out if Wolves are to ensure they don’t have a bitter reality check and suffer from second season syndrome in 2019/20.

What’s the issue?

In short, Nuno is too stubborn and if Maurizio Sarri has been receiving criticism for something similar then the Portuguese boss deserves the same.

Yes, Wolves have achieved some outstanding results this season but it overshadows some major problems. The Midlands club only have one plan and there is a serious lack of any tactical alternative.

That has never been so evident than in their defeat to Watford last Sunday. Plan A was going swimmingly well, but once the game turned they had nothing to combat their opponents.

They went defensive, so defensive in fact that it cost them the game. They invited pressure and then after conceding Gerard Deulofeu’s second goal had no answer.

Nuno struggles to adapt when the going gets tough and although they’ve claimed 13 points against top six sides, there have been some questionable performances on the road. Molineux may be a fortress but it’s a place they can afford to play an attractive brand of football at.

A major problem in having no plan B is that they have to set up the same on the road and their display against Burnley at Turf Moor two weekends ago was indicative of this.

A Wolves fan shares his most gutting moment of the last 10 years supporting the club in the video below…

Nuno’s substitutes are also largely ineffective and provide further evidence of a lack of an alternative plan. At Wembley, the changes he made had no difference, whilst regular rotation options Adama Traore and Ivan Cavaleiro have only contributed six goals between them.

Wolves’ coveted 45-year-old has been uttered as one of the managers of the season, but perhaps pundits ought to look at the man who outfought him last weekend, Javi Gracia, instead.

Tottenham fans are not interested in signing Ayoze Perez

[ad_pod ]

Well, it would be fair to say that the Tottenham Hotspur fans do not want their club to move for Newcastle United attacker Ayoze Perez in this summer’s transfer window.

In a recent interview with Marca, Perez admitted that he will return to Spain before the end of his career, whilst he also discussed reported interest from the likes of Tottenham and Everton.

The 25-year-old was brilliant against Everton last weekend, scoring twice and providing an assist in Newcastle’s 3-2 win at St James’ Park.

In total, the forward has scored seven times and registered four assists in 33 appearances in all competitions for his English club this season.

The Tottenham fans have been discussing a potential move for the Spaniard and it would be fair to say that not too many are interested in chairman Daniel Levy signing Perez.

The Chalkboard: Darren Moore bringing Montero on could have saved West Brom job

[ad_pod ]

Darren Moore was sacked as West Bromwich Albion manager on Saturday evening following the 1-1 draw at home to Championship strugglers Ipswich Town, but it could have been so different if he had made an obvious substitution.

On the chalkboard

Well, the 44-year-old’s reign at The Hawthorns came to an end at the weekend after the Baggies took just one point from the previous nine available, leaving them nine points adrift of the automatic promotion spots ahead of the latest round of midweek fixtures.

The heavy 4-0 defeat against Leeds United would have been a huge concern for the Albion hierarchy, but you would assume that they would have stuck with their former centre-back for at least another game had he taken all three points against the Tractor Boys.

That scenario looked on the cards when Stefan Johansen gave them the lead in the fourth minute, but following Jon Nolan’s equaliser just after the interval they were unable to find a way through.

Where was Jefferson Montero?

Moore switched things up against Town with a lot more freedom handed to some players in a 4-3-3/3-5-2 system, but it actually seemed to affect them negatively as they were unclear where they should be on occasions.

Who do you want to see promoted this year? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have picked their 3 favoured teams in the video below…

Given they were 42 minutes plus stoppage-time to find another breakthrough against a team that look destined for League One, it is baffling why the Swansea City loanee remained an unused substitute.

Instead, the 44-year-old boss brought on central midfielders Sam Field and James Morrison instead, while the relatively inexperienced Jonathan Leko also came on the pitch ahead of him.

He has goals – as he showed against QPR last month – in him as well as the ability to inject some pace and creative threat in the final third, and he could have helped West Brom get the three points needed to save Moore – for the time being at least.
