In the letter, Aditya Verma has expressed his anguish at the ICC’s silence “on the issue of the IPL scam”•The Indian Express

Aditya Verma, the Cricket Association of Bihar secretary whose petition following the IPL corruption scandal has led to an upheaval in Indian cricket, has questioned the ICC’s silence over the scandal and its decision to allow BCCI’s stepped-aside president N Srinivasan to attend the ICC Executive board meeting in Dubai last month. In an email that Verma claims to have sent to all the ICC office-bearers, he has expressed his anguish at the ICC’s silence “on the issue of the IPL scam”. “Cricket is a great sport and it’s the duty of ICC and BCCI to maintain the credibility of cricket and players,” the letter stated. The letter has also questioned the decision to let Srinivasan attend the ICC Board meeting in Dubai last month despite Srinivasan in an “affidavit filed to the court had said he was stepping aside as the BCCI president till the probe concludes”.Verma had filed a petition in the Bombay High Court last July questioning the legality of a two-member panel appointed by the BCCI to inquire the allegations against Gurunath Meiyappan, Srinivasan’s son-in-law, his team Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and one of its co-owners Raj Kundra. The matter has escalated to the Supreme Court stepping in to initiate a cleansing act in Indian cricket.During the last hearing of the case last week, CAB’s lawyers requested the court to bar Srinivasan, who is supposed to take over as the ICC chairman in July, from attending ICC meetings. Though the court didn’t entertain the plea during its last hearing, the apex court has decided to ask Justice Mukul Mudgal – whose earlier report concluded that Meiyappan was a CSK official and had recommended further recommendations against 13 personalities involved in cricket – to continue the probe into the allegations. The court is likely to issue an interim order in the coming week.

CSA offers Test to Zimbabwe

CSA has proposed a Test between South Africa and Zimbabwe to be played before they host Australia for a Test and Twenty20 series that begins on February 12, ESPNcricinfo has learned.Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) is unlikely to be able to commit to the fixture because of their impasse with their players: they are on strike over non-payment and their domestic competitions have also been put on hold. With no end in sight to the boycott, one player, who asked not to be named, said he thought “the chances of the match happening are very slim because we have not been playing any cricket at all”.A second source from Zimbabwe said even though some players “welcomed the opportunity”, others are wary of visiting South Africa given the team’s long break from competitive cricket.Zimbabwe’s last outing was almost four months ago, against Pakistan in September. Since then, a tour by Sri Lanka was cancelled for financial reasons and although the domestic four and one-day competitions kicked off, they were stalled after one round of the former and three matches of the latter. In case Zimbabwe are unable to make the trip, CSA are also considering an alternative. Members of South Africa’s Test squad would play against a Zimbabwe A side in Johannesburg in early February. That would most likely coincide with the Australians’ tour match in Potchefstroom against a South African Invitation XI. The Invitation team will probably not consist of South Africa’s ‘next best’ as was the case on 2011, but promising players in the set up.CSA insisted that the offer has been made for cricketing reasons and is not an attempt to build support in the ICC crisis over the future make-up of international cricket.Zimbabwe’s players went on strike in mid-December over non-payment. They also refused to restart the fixtures in January, insisting they will stick to the “no pay, no cricket” policy. Their stance led to the limited-overs incoming tour of Afghanistan, which was scheduled for January, also being cancelled.Salaries are outstanding as of November last year and ZC’s financial situation has meant they cannot provide any guarantee as to when they will be able to pay their players. It is understood they are currently in talks with a local corporate to sign sponsorship and if they manage to secure the deal, domestic cricket could resume by next week. That would be the only practice Zimbabwe get ahead of the World Twenty20, unless they take up South Africa’s offer to play a Test, which could be staged at the Wanderers. There is a possibility that this sudden move by CSA is to gain ZC’s support when the draft proposal for a revamp of the ICC’s administrative structure comes to vote at the Executive Board’s quarterly meeting in Dubai on January 28 and 29. CSA’s position on the draft, which will concentrate power with the BCCI, ECB and CA, is that the idea was “fundamentally flawed” and “in breach of the ICC constitution.”CSA rejected suggestions of using the match to gain Zimbabwe’s backing, saying tat as they have not played Tests since the Boxing Day fixture against India, and with the first-class competition on hold because of the domestic T20 tournament, team management wanted an additional fixture ahead of the Australia series.”The request to play Zimbabwe is purely for cricket reasons,” a CSA official said. “Our team are notoriously slow starters and the request was made long before the ICC revamp proposal came.”ZC have made no comment on the proposal but are understood to traditionally vote in favour of the BCCI. One insider questioned whether the match would be enough to sway Zimbabwe to endorse South Africa’s position. “I can’t see how Zimbabwe would benefit from a match against South Africa. They won’t earn any money from coming here. Maybe if CSA had suggested going to play in Zimbabwe and ZC they could sell television rights, they may be interested.”South Africa are also due to tour Zimbabwe in July but the possibility of that series going ahead is in doubt, because of ZC’s financial situation. This story was updated with additional information at 1800 GMT on January 23

Trego re-signs with Central Districts

Peter Trego, the Somerset allrounder, has re-signed with Central Districts for the coming HRV Cup in New Zealand. He will also participate in the opening five rounds of the Plunket Shield. This is Trego’s second season with the domestic side, with his first season being cut short due to injury.”It was bitterly disappointing to get injured last year and miss most of the HRV Twenty20,” Trego said. “I was really keen to get another opportunity so when the invitation came to come back out to New Zealand I jumped at it.”While Trego only featured in three matches for Central Districts last season, scoring just 21 runs, he hopes to bank on his current form. He enjoyed a sterling run in the Yorkshire Bank 40 this past season, finishing on top of the run-scorers list with 745 runs at an average of 82.77, which included two hundreds and five fifties. He will hope to carry this form into the HRV Cup, which is scheduled to begin on November 1 with a match against Canterbury in Christchurch.

Rahmat, bowlers take Afghanistan closer to win

ScorecardRahmat Shah’s maiden century helped Afghanistan to an important 72-run first-innings lead•ICC/Saleem Sanghati

Afghanistan took firm control of the Intercontinental match against Kenya in Dubai after a maiden century from Rahmat Shah and quick wickets by their bowlers. With two days left, they are now in touching distance of a win with Kenya only 21 runs ahead with their last two wickets remaining.Sixteen wickets had fallen on the first day and 12 went down on the second, most of them in quick succession. But the difference between the situation of the two teams was due to a 122-run stand for the seventh wicket between Rahmat and Mohammad Nasim Baras. Rahmat, who had only one half-century in first-class cricket before this match, did the bulk of the scoring and went past the 100-mark for the first time in his career. He got ample support from Baras who played out 125 deliveries for his 32 in the partnership.Once the stand was broken, the remaining batsmen didn’t survive for long. Rahmat was the last batsman to be dismissed after scoring 144, that included five sixes, but his innings had ensured an important 72-run lead.Kenya’s second innings started the same way as their first: they lost their first two wickets within the first four overs and never recovered from that position. Their innings never really got going as the Afghanistan bowlers made regular strikes to put the team within sight of a huge win. Collins Obuya was the top-scorer in the innings with only 16 as four bowlers picked up a couple of wickets each.

Yorks find silver lining through rain

Rain brought a damp end to Thursday’s Yorkshire Bank 40 game between Yorkshire and Middlesex at Headingley, but the silver lining for the home side was that they pulled off their first win of the season against county opposition. After Middlesex had been restricted to 217 for 8 from their 40 overs in the Group C fixture, Yorkshire reached 54 without loss in 13 overs in reply before a 26-minute break for rain reduced their Duckworth-Lewis target to 197 off 35 overs. And when the rain returned, openers Andrew Gale and Adam Lyth had taken the score to 81 in 17.2 overs, Yorkshire winning by the comfortable margin of 17 runs under the D/L system. It was Yorkshire’s best start to an innings in the competition this season, skipper Gale ending unbeaten on 34 from 56 balls with two fours and Lyth 38 off 50 deliveries with three fours and a six. Before this game Yorkshire’s only success in seven outings had been against Unicorns, their six other matches all being lost.Middlesex’s modest total meant Gale and Lyth were under little pressure when they began the reply and their main concern in the increasing gloom was to make sure that they were always comfortably ahead of the required rate. Gale led the way for a while but Lyth moved ahead by hooking Toby Roland-Jones for four and cracking his next ball for a flat six over midwicket. After the first stoppage for rain, the batsmen had sufficient time to make it Yorkshire’s best opening stand of the season, overtaking the 61 by Gale and Phil Jaques against Leicestershire at Scarborough, Jaques not being selected because of an abdominal strain.Having been put in to bat, most of the action came inside the first nine overs of the Middlesex innings as Paul Stirling lashed a rapid 32 from 20 balls with five fours and a six and paceman Iain Wardlaw knocked over three of the first four batsmen to claim career-best figures of 3 for 39.Stirling set the tone by cover-driving Wardlaw’s first ball for four and he took seven off the over before tearing into 15-year-old Matt Fisher, striking him for three fours and a six in his initial over to score the visitors’ first 25 runs from a dozen deliveries. But Wardlaw replied with a perfect yorker to knock over Stirling’s stumps for 32 from 20 balls and end an opening partnership of 42 in five overs with Dawid Malan.Joe Denly then chopped Wardlaw into his stumps which meant that the seamer had bowled his last five victims in the competition and in the following over Sam Robson suffered a similar fate against Ryan Gibson, whose next two balls were leg-glanced and cover-driven for boundaries by new batsman, Adam Rossington. It became 65 for 4 as Malan cut loosely at Wardlaw and was caught behind by Andy Hodd, leaving the Middlesex middle order to rebuild the innings – a job chiefly done by Rossington (42) and Gareth Berg (43) before both became victims of Yorkshire’s leading YB40 League bowler Richard Pyrah, who ended up with figures of 3 for 33.

BCCI working committee to meet next week

BCCI president N Srinivasan has agreed to call for a working committee meeting next week to discuss the corruption issues plaguing the IPL

ESPNcricinfo staff31-May-2013BCCI president N Srinivasan has agreed to call for a working committee meeting next week to discuss the corruption issues plaguing the IPL, following the arrest of Gurunath Meiyappan, his son-in-law and a top official of the Chennai Super Kings. The date of the meeting is yet to be confirmed. It was initially planned for the next weekend but following the resignations of the BCCI secretary and treasurer on Friday, ESPNcricinfo understands it is now likely to be held mid-week, “either Tuesday or Wednesday.”On Friday, Anurag Thakur, the president of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association and a BJP member of parliament, had joined the chorus of BCCI officials asking for a meeting to deal with the problems facing Indian cricket after the arrests of three Rajasthan Royals players on charges of spot-fixing and Gurunath on charges of betting. Thakur had not yet spoken out on the issue until today.”We are talking to various members of the board and I have spoken to the president to convene a meeting and discuss all these issues in the meeting,” Thakur, who is also a joint-secretary of the BCCI, had said. “I think it’s very important to convene a meeting, I have spoken to the president and the secretary asking them to convene a meeting and I think they will convene a meeting over the next few days.”I have spoken to Mr Ajay Shirke (BCCI treasurer), he is also keen to have a meeting. Let there be a meeting where everyone can come and speak their opinion.” Thakur’s comments came a day after Shirke said he would consider resigning as BCCI treasurer because of the manner in which the board had handled the corruption scandal.Earlier today, Sachin Tendulkar broke his silence via a statement, saying he was shocked and disappointed by the developments in Indian cricket over the last fortnight.ESPNcricinfo understands that senior BCCI officials have been in constant discussion with Srinivasan, asking him to step aside from his office as board president until the three-man commission completes its inquiry into his son-in-law Gurunath, the Super Kings owners India Cements and the owners of Rajasthan Royals. Srinivasan, however, had paid no heed to their advice. The working committee does not have constitutional authority to ask the president to step down. What it can do, however, is pass the resolution calling for a special general body meeting and, with that, set in motion the procedure required for the impeachment of the BCCI president. It would require ten BCCI members to send out written requests before the special general body meeting commences in order to begin impeachment proceedings against the president. The working committee, which is responsible for the board’s functioning, constitutes of 24 members at the moment. Besides the nine office-bearers, it includes a representative from each of the five permanent Test centres, another representative from an association from the five zones by rotation, and those from the affiliated units who have hosted a Test match in the last two years.*14.00GMT May 31: This article has been updated after news of the BCCI calling for a working committee meeting came in

Practice helped me master spin – Laxman

VVS Laxman, in his 16-year Test career, established himself as one of the best players of spin bowling in the world but, by his own admission, it wasn’t a talent he had acquired when he first picked up the bat

VVS Laxman, in a discussion with Harsha Bhogle and ESPNcricinfo editor Sambit Bal, at the launch of in Hyderabad•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

VVS Laxman, in his 16-year Test career, established himself as one of the best players of spin bowling in the world but, by his own admission, it wasn’t a talent he had acquired when he first picked up the bat. Failures early in his career taught him to respect spin bowling more and after hours of practice his batting had evolved to the point where he could master any attack.Laxman was speaking at the launch of , a compilation of the best Q&A long-form interviews published by ESPNcricinfo and Walt Disney. The book features 22 interviews with current and former players speaking on specific topics such as captaincy, swing bowling, commentary, batting etc. Those interviewed include Sachin Tendulkar, Ian Chappell, Mahela Jayawardene, Barry Richards, and Laxman himself.”I never got to play quality spin bowling when I was growing up,” Laxman said in a discussion with Harsha Bhogle and ESPNcricinfo editor Sambit Bal, responding to an extract from an earlier interview. “As a kid I always enjoyed playing fast bowling. I neglected playing spinners. At the end of the practice session I got extra throw-downs, asking the coaches to throw from ten yards so I could play quicker bowling. I used to practice on cement wickets using a plastic ball or a wet tennis ball.”When I started playing the Ranji Trophy, there were some quality spinners in domestic cricket and I remember I would invariably get out to Sairaj Bahutule (former Mumbai legspinner), playing against the spin and getting caught at midwicket. That’s when I came back to the nets and luckily Hyderabad had some quality spinners like Arshad Ayub, Venkatapathy Raju, Kanwaljit Singh. I practiced hard at the nets against them and I always felt that the hard work you put in the nets will reap results. Within a span of six months to one year I became an excellent player of spin. In domestic cricket we used to get tough wickets, like the one in Chennai for the Test (against Australia), and my confidence grew.”Laxman’s admissions could be a lesson for the touring Australian team, whose batsmen struggled against spin in Chennai. “You react to the ball that is coming at you,” he said. “If you focus on the guy holding the ball, your thought process changes. You should remove things like the state of the pitch from your thought process and only react to the ball. If you think too much about the wicket, you’re only expecting a certain kind of delivery and in the bargain you lose out on the shot you could have played.”Laxman also spoke at length about how it’s a bigger challenge for youngsters today to strike the balance between their game and their personality, compared to the scenario at the time he was growing up. He felt it is a challenge for the modern cricketer to manage distractions better, given that players nowadays have plenty on their plate to deal with.”It’s not just about distractions. It’s the amount of options available to you. For example, when I chose not to become a doctor and chose cricket as my career path, there was nothing in my life except cricket. When my friends went to movies etc, I used to go home, so I could be fresh in the morning for practice. Now, there are so many options. If you are not successful as a cricketer you could be successful in any other field. That is why now it is very important how you communicate with the youngsters. You cannot be negative with them. You have to be positive so that their interest in the game always remains.”There is so much of fame, adulation, scrutiny, and money [these days]. It is very important for any young cricketer to be as balanced as possible. It is very difficult to do so and I feel for them.”While he agreed that mentorship is important to a player’s growth, he insisted that a youngster should be educated on what his priorities should be at an early age.”What was the one thing that kept me going? It was the pride of playing for your country,” Laxman said. “That can be ingrained at a young age. [Money] is a danger. For young cricketers, their priorities should be emphasised. They should know that money is a by-product of what you’re trying to achieve. Pride and passion should be the first priority. I have noticed in the same coaching camps I used to attend as a kid, the parents now say ‘I don’t care if my son plays for India or not but I want him to get into one of the IPL franchises.’ There has to be a balance. That will happen in the ages of 16-19. The coaches at camps like at the NCA have to address the issue.”Coaching youngsters, he says, also needs to be handled with caution. “After my retirement my son suddenly became interested in the game, I don’t know why,” Laxman said, which was followed by laughter. “I just tell him to hit the ball. My nephew goes to a coaching camp and one day I was playing with the two of them. It was strange. My son was only hitting the ball without bothering about his head position etc, but my nephew would come to me as ask, ‘uncle, how is my elbow position?’ They are just aged 6 and 7. What structured coaching sometimes does is it removes the natural instincts of a player. Till a cricketer is mature, one should not load too much information on him. I notice spinners are at their best till they are 15, but they vanish. The coaches try to correct them and the player gets confused.”

Buttler told Tewatia 'don't look at my hundred'

With ten needed off the last over, Rahul Tewatia took down Mitchell Starc to seal GT’s victory

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Apr-202510:24

Boucher: Buttler’s takedown of Starc sealed it for GT

The Gujarat Titans (GT) top order has been so prolific this season that it is easy to forget the previous time Rahul Tewatia had much to do in IPL 2025. In fact, he had batted in each of GT’s previous three games and made an impactful 24 not out off 12 against Rajasthan Royals (RR).On Saturday, Tewatia came in at No. 5 with GT needing 11 off 7 against Delhi Capitals (DC) in Ahmedabad, and Mitchell Starc to bowl six of those balls. Only a game ago, Starc had successfully defended eight runs in the final over against RR with a barrage of reverse-swinging yorkers to take the game into a Super Over, where he bowled DC to victory.Tewatia’s first ball was the last of the 19th over and he took a single to retain strike for the 20th, with Jos Buttler on 97 off 54 balls at the other end. He then slog-swept Starc over midwicket for six and got an inside edge to go between his legs for four to complete the chase of 204 with seven wickets in hand and four balls to spare.Related

“It was not as if I expected him to bowl just yorkers,” Tewatia said after sealing the win that took GT to the top of the points table with five wins in seven games. “But the way he bowled yorkers in the last match and defended nine [eight], I expected him to back his yorkers. My aim was to see the ball and hit, whether he bowled length or yorker.”Tewatia said Buttler had backed him to go for his shots in the last over instead of thinking of handing over the strike to the set batter. He had batted with Buttler only once previously before Saturday, for RR in IPL 2020.”He told me just one thing when we needed ten off the last over – don’t look at my hundred,” Tewatia said. “He told me ‘I know you are very clear in your mind – so just execute your plan and not at my hundred, just look at winning the game’.”GT had won the toss on a hot afternoon in Ahmedabad and all the DC batters got rapid starts, which kept them on course for a 220-plus score. They were 105 for 3 after ten overs and 163 for 4 after 16, but got 40 for 4 at the death to finish on 203 for 8. GT captain Shubman Gill credited his bowlers for fighting back.Rahul Tewatia hits Mitchell Starc for a maximum•BCCI

“The way we pulled back in the game, at one point it was like the total is going to be around 220-230,” Gill said. “But in the last overs, the way we pulled back in the game, credit to the bowlers for that. Before this match, we talked about [having] back-to-back games tonight and then the day after tomorrow at Eden [Gardens against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)]. These two games, we thought, would decide where we will stand in the points table and we are very happy to get this one.”Despite DC scoring at a high rate, GT’s reluctance to bowl left-arm spinnerR Sai Kishore came as a surprise considering his performances this season. Rashid Khan was brought on after the powerplay and, for most of the innings, was the lone spinner used. With Ashutosh Sharma finding pace on the ball easy, Gill turned to Sai Kishore for the final over of the innings. He gave away just nine runs and dismissed Ashutosh, his 11th wicket in IPL 2025.”They were ahead in the game and we didn’t want them to get too much ahead,” Gill said. “The thought process was it was difficult to hit the fast bowlers in the middle. So we thought let’s continue with them.”One of the factors that went against Sai Kishore’s introduction was the presence of the left-handed Axar Patel almost through the middle overs of DC’s innings. “The way the game was going on, [Sai Kishore] was not needed,” Tewatia said. “Ashutosh had hit medium-pacers for sixes, so coach and captain felt we need to go to spin. That last over went for just eight or nine, so it worked in our favour. It was not a miscalculation; it was all as per match situation and batters in the middle.”
