Abraham deal is shades of Pelle for Saints

It has been suggested recently that Southampton could look to sign Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham in the summer transfer window and if he were to join the Saints, it would be a deal similar to the one that saw Graziano Pelle join the club in 2014.

According to EuroSport, both West Ham and Southampton have made tentative enquiries about signing the England international, who has struggled for game time under Thomas Tuchel since the German was appointed manager of the Stamford Bridge outfit.

The report suggests that with Chelsea targeting Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland ahead of the summer window, opportunities would be few and far in between for Abraham next season.

Therefore, a move away could be on the cards for the £36 million-rated forward, and Southampton would presumably be able to offer him regular football if he were to make the move to St Mary’s.

Southampton have had some great target men strikers in the past decade, with Rickie Lambert and Pelle two of the very best, but it is something they have arguably lacked under Hasenhuttl.

Danny Ings and Che Adams have lead the line for the majority of the past two seasons, and whilst both work extremely hard, neither are particularly strong in the air, so Abraham would definitely offer something different if he were to join.

The 6 foot 3 striker has been prolific in recent seasons, first on loan with Bristol City in the 2016/17 campaign, where he hit 26 goals in 48 appearances for the Robins.

After a disappointing spell with Swansea in the Premier League, he found his shooting boots once again with Aston Villa, notching 25 goals in 37 appearances on their way to promotion.

He then grabbed 15 Premier League goals with Chelsea last season under Frank Lampard and has now made six appearances for England as he continues to impress in the top-flight.

Therefore, there seems little doubt that he would score goals should he join Southampton in the summer, and he could prove to be similarly effective to the 6 foot 4 Pelle, who was superb in his time on the South Coast.

The Italian contributed 30 goals and 10 assists in 80 appearances for the Saints, before moving to China in 2016, so he is fondly remembered by a lot of Southampton fans.

So, if Martin Semmens can convince Abraham to join this summer, then it would be a deal reminiscent of the one that saw them sign Pelle, and hopefully, the 23-year-old would be as impressive as his Italian predecessor was in Southampton colours.

Garner sends Man Utd timely reminder

Manchester United prospect James Garner sent Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a timely reminder of his obvious potential after scoring his first goal for Nottingham Forest against Derby County in the East Midlands derby on Friday night.

Garner scored his first senior goal in only his seventh appearance for Chris Hughton’s side since swapping Old Trafford for the City Ground on loan until the end of the season last month following an unsuccessful spell with Watford.

Hughton threw Garner in at the deep end by handing him his first start in the 2-1 win over Coventry City at the start of the year, helping his side end a winless run of three games in the Championship.

Since then, he has gone on to make seven appearances in the English second division with his first professional goal to show for his six starts, earning praise from former Newcastle United midfielder Jack Colback.

He said: “I thought James Garner’s debut on was fantastic. He was moving the ball around really well and spraying some good passes around the pitch so it was a strong performance but when you consider he has joined from Manchester United, you know he’ll have that quality.”

Despite his age, the 19-year-old has already drawn comparisons to club legend and current backroom staff member Michael Carrick, and it’s easy to why after such an impressive performance.

Garner opened the scoring in the first half after he fired home a first-time effort from the edge of the box beneath the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Colin Kazim-Richards’ late equaliser meant Forest were forced to be more defensive in the closing stages yet Garner stuck to his defensive duties diligently, finishing the game with one block and two interceptions to his name from the full 90′ minutes, as per SofaScore.

He also boasted a fine 71% pass accuracy with only a handful of his passes going astray (10), while he also completed one successful dribble from the same number of attempts, which suggests that he was a constant thorn in Wayne Rooney’s side.

Garner additionally also took a staggering three shots on target, with four attempts on goal in total throughout the entire game, which greatly exceeds Nemanja Matic’s efforts in the Premier League this season with the 32-year-old only recording 0.3 shots per 90 in 13 top-flight appearances, per SofaScore.

Now, with United reportedly eyeing a move for West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, Garner’s heroics will send a timely reminder back to Solskjaer that he is worth keeping an eye on for the future over the remainder of the campaign.

LFC suffer injury blow with Milner

Liverpool’s injury woes look to have worsened after James Milner was forced off in the 3-1 defeat against Leicester City on Saturday, and the timing arguably could not be worse.

The Reds have endured a nightmare start to 2021 which has seen them drop off the top of the Premier League table and knocked out of the FA Cup by rivals Manchester United.

Whilst long-term injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have made things extremely difficult for Jurgen Klopp’s side, it looks as if they will be providing a feeble defence to the title they won so impressively last season.

In their current rut, Klopp will be relying on his experienced players to help Liverpool get back to their best, with the likes of Jordan Henderson and Milner providing experience on the pitch and aiding the inexperienced backline.

Therefore, to lose Milner through injury ahead of the Champions League game against RB Leipzig is horrible timing for Klopp, as the midfielder has been a big part of the Reds’ success since joining on a free transfer from Manchester City in 2015.

Following the game against Leicester, Klopp revealed that the 35-year-old had an issue with his hamstring and that is why he was forced off at the King Power Stadium, and it seems likely, therefore, that he will miss the trip to Budapest on Tuesday evening.

Back in December 2018, Georginio Wijnaldum was full of praise for Milner after he reached 500 Premier League appearances, saying:

“It is [incredible to reach 500 Premier League games], and also that he is still so fit. He’s a machine.”

Therefore, it seems clear that Milner, who earns £140k per week at Liverpool, is a well respected by his teammates and is still a vital part of Klopp’s side despite his age, so it is undoubtedly a blow that he has suffered an injury and could miss some important upcoming fixtures.

Idrissa Gueye rejects Newcastle transfer

Steve Bruce could deliver a masterclass at Newcastle United by convincing Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye to accept a Deadline Day loan move.

What’s the word?

According to L’Equipe, via GFFN, Gueye has snubbed the offer of joining the Magpies after emerging as a potential target for the St. James’ Park outfit.

The French sports newspaper had reported on Sunday that Toon chiefs had contacted their Parisian counterparts to discuss a deal for the 31-year-old to see out the remainder of the season on Tyneside.

Gueye was not thought to be opposed to a return to the Premier League following three years with Everton but would favour a move to a club higher in the table than United, who sit eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Newcastle had reached an understanding with PSG over a loan move for Gueye before the 74-cap Senegal international rejected the deal, with his future in the French capital appearing increasingly bleak following the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino.

Gueye had started 10 of a potential 17 Ligue 1 fixtures under Thomas Tuchel this season, restricted by ankle and hamstring injuries, but has only played nine minutes since being replaced in the 56th-minute of a 3-0 win over Stade Brest on January 9 by Pochettino.

Should Newcastle push for Gueye?

Gueye has experience of tasting relegation from the Premier League from his one-year spell with Aston Villa in 2015/16, so it is hardly surprising that he would prefer to avoid a dogfight upon a potential return to the division.

Yet Bruce should do all he can to convince the £16m-rated beast to accept a last gasp move to Tyneside, in what would be a masterclass in the market from the under-pressure Magpies boss who has faced relentless calls to be sacked over recent weeks.

While Gueye is seen in France to have struggled to adapt to Ligue 1 as he does not boast the personality needed for a club like PSG, he was one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League with Everton and earned a wealth of praise for it.

Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Phil Neville could only wax lyrical over the Senegal international following a 3-0 win for Everton over Sunderland in September 2016, with former Blues defender Neville describing him as “sensational” and “really special”.

He continued to build on those early efforts in Royal Blue to the point that in his final season, in 2018/19, Gueye ended the term with the second-most successful tackles (142)– one shy of Leicester’s Wilfred Ndidi (143) – and the sixth-most interceptions (74) by any player in the division, per WhoScored.

Bruce would no doubt adore seeing Gueye mop up possession in the engine room at St. James’ Park over the remainder of the season, and should not relent on his interest in the out of favour PSG brute on Deadline Day.

Leeds face transfer battle for Reading’s Michael Olise

Leeds United are set to face a real battle in the race to sign Reading starlet Michael Olise in the January transfer window.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks have suggested Marcelo Bielsa’s side are interested in landing the £7.2m-rated talent this month, but The Daily Mirror’s latest update on Olise’s future may have handed the Whites a major blow.

The report claims that fellow Premier League side Aston Villa are now also eyeing up a potential move for the 19-year-old, and that Dean Smith is keen to add more younger players to his first-team squad, and has been given the green light to make some major moves in the transfer market.

Radrizzani must cough up

Given Olise’s performances this season for the Royals, it’s no surprise to see plenty of clubs lining up to try and sign him. He’s bagged four goals and provided an impressive eight assists in just 24 games this campaign, and with his ability to play anywhere behind the striker, could give Bielsa another attacking weapon.

His teammate at Reading, Sam Baldock, said early last year: “Michael is a real talent, he’ll get on the ball in any situation. He’s fearless, if you ask him today I’ll guarantee that he had no nerves. He’s a lively character and one who I’ve noticed a real change in the last couple of months.”

Given his age, there’s real potential for Olise to go far, and nabbing him at a low price now would gift Leeds an incredible asset both in terms of what he could offer on the pitch, and how much he could sell for down the line.

Andrea Radrizzani must surely consider coughing up the money Reading want for him now, and making sure that Villa or any other club don’t swoop in under their noses. It would be a nightmare for the Whites if Olise turned into a superstar elsewhere and they look back on the moment they snubbed a move for him.

Spurs target Haris Seferovic could elevate Harry Kane’s game

Tottenham Hotspur continue to be on the search for a back-up striker and after many failed attempts, could they have fund the ideal candidate at long last?

What’s the word?

According to Record (via Sport Witness), Spurs are interested in signing Benfica forward Haris Seferovic on loan before the transfer deadline in under 14 days time.

They claim that the 28-year-old is an alternative choice for manager Jose Mourinho after missing out on several key targets.

A possible option-to-buy at the end of the 20/21 campaign could be included as part of any deal and the Primeira Liga club haven’t ruled out doing business. It would be a similar deal to that of Gedson Fernandes.

Could bring the best out Kane

Daniel Levy will have blood on his hands if he doesn’t secure a new striker to play second fiddle to Harry Kane this window as it’s risky business to go into a congested calendar with just one senior striker.

Last season in the Englishman’s absence, Spurs were knocked out of both the FA Cup and Champions League with players having to play out of position.

Finding a viable alternative could reap substantial benefits to Kane in what will now be a European Championship season. If he can be rested for some of the lesser matches and perhaps some in the Europa League, then he will be fit and firing in the important matches, thus elevating his game substantially in time for the summer.

In Seferovic they’d be getting a Fernando Llorente type with him measuring 6 foot 2 inches. During the 18/19 season, he bagged 23 goals having also averaged 2.8 shots and one key pass per game, via WhoScored, but now finds himself as the backup in Portugual.

He’s a striker that models his game on Zlatan Ibrahimovic and is described as “an explosive No.9 whose physical frame and height made him stand out, giving him an advantage at youth level. A poacher who is lethal in the area, the striker is more Shearer than Henry” by FourFourTwo.

Seferovic has clinched 65 caps for Switzerland and is valued at just £9m by Transfermarkt, he could well be quite the steal and one that’ll help Mourinho bring the best out of Kane in a crucial season.

AND in other news, Spurs could land a “bargain” in £18m striker likened to Dennis Bergkamp…
