Gers set for Moreno discount

According to Football Insider, Glasgow Rangers could sign Santiago Moreno for £2m less than his original valuation this summer.

The Lowdown: Gers eye Moreno

The Gers have been linked with a move for 21-year-old Moreno, who currently plays for America de Cali in his home country of Colombia.

There have also been other clubs credited with an interest, such as Premier League outfit Leeds United (The Telegraph).

The Latest: Gers set for discount

Now, though, as per a recruitment source, Football Insider have revealed Moreno could be signed for £3m instead of £5m – that represents a 40% discount.

Moreno is one of two Colombians targetted by Ross Wilson, with Santos Borre also on the club’s radar (El Deportivo).

The Verdict: Bonus

This is a bonus for the Gers. Moreno, who has been compared to Liverpool winger Sadio Mane (TEAMtalk), has a big future ahead of him, but £5m would have represented a big fee for the Gers.

At £3m, however, a deal is far more accessible for Wilson and co.

So far, Moreno has managed 10 goals and seven assists in 51 games for Cali (Transfermarkt). The Gers know exactly how influential Colombian players can be – Alfredo Morelos has been a prolific scorer for Rangers since signing in 2017. If Moreno were to have even half the impact of the 25-year-old, he would prove to be a top signing at this price.

In other news, Rangers fans were livid at this 21/22 reveal.

West Indies consolidate amidst high drama at Antigua

You want action, forget the one-dayers, stick to Test cricket. The third day of the fourth Test saw Ajay Ratra become the first Indian stumper to score a ton overseas, India declare on 513/9 and West Indies respond with 187/3. Not before Anil Kumble, with a broken jaw and a return-ticket booked, took the field anddismissed Brian Lara. What a day!It all began with Ratra, increasingly under pressure for not making runs, watching in dismay as Laxman became the seventh Indian wicket to fall. After making 130 (244 balls, 14 fours) Laxman played back to a short ball from Merv Dillon and trod on his wicket. An unusual dismissal but one that West Indies would take on a flat wicket.Zaheer Khan (4) then hung around long enough to see Ratra reach three figures. It did not come easily, but when it did, the joy was unbridled. The whole Indian team stood on the balcony clapping and cheering as Ratra became the first Indian ‘keeper to score a Test century overseas. This is of course overlooking Vijay Manjrekar’s similar achievement, as he was not really aspecialist ‘keeper. The effort took India to a substantial total. And when the declaration came, after Javagal Srinath made 15 and was dismissed, Ratra was unbeaten on 115 (282 balls, 12 fours). In response to India’s healthy 513/9 declared, West Indies got off to a solid start. There was almost no movement off the wicket or in the air. Javagal Srinath and Ashish Nehra shared the new ball but could not trouble the batsmen.Zaheer Khan, with his extra pace and awkward angle, got a couple of deliveries to jump. This was not yet cause for concern, however, as Hinds and Gayle drove fluently through both the off and on-sides.The first real chance for the visitors came in the 24th over of the day. Gayle, moving across his stumps and flicking a full delivery that found Shiv Sunder Das at square-leg. The fielder reacted a touch late, however, and floored the catch.Fortunately for the Indians, Gayle did not make them pay for their mistake. Without adding another run to his tally of 32, he nicked Zaheer Khan through to the ‘keeper soon after.Sarwan replaced Gayle as the ball was beginning to lose its shine. India were prompted to bring Sourav Ganguly and Tendulkar into the attack and this helped the overs roll along. Tendulkar, in particular, infused some interest into the proceedings with leg-breaks and googlies that turned prodigiously. The wrong ‘uns in particular troubled the left-handed Hinds more than once. When Wavell Hinds brought up his half century with a spanking cover drive, the fans at Antigua were on their feet. After watching India bat for two days and a bit, there was finally some West Indian batting on display. And it was gorgeous clean hitting at that. That was until Tendulkar enticed a false shot from Hinds. A looping wrong’un seemed badly pitched, a shade outside the leg stump. Leaning forward and preparing to clout the ball to the fence, Hinds found the ball dipping on him, played down the wrong line and heard the death rattle. The ball spun back enough to clip the leg stump. Hinds’ well-made 65 (117 balls, 9 fours) had come to an end.Sarwan watched quietly from the non-striker’s end as the biggest roar of the day welcomed Lara out to the middle. Lara on a flat wicket… a run fest on the cards? Not much later, just after news came in that Kumble was flying back to India the next day for surgery, out walked the man himself. Heavily strapped up, with bands going around his jaw, over his head and across the back of it, a semi-mummified Kumble walked out to the middle. The ball was tossed to Kumble and a slider slipped past Lara’s outside edge off the very first ball. There was much speculation about the wisdom of such a move. Perhaps it was foolhardy to ask a man with a fractured jaw to bowl? All talk was put to an end, as is so often the case with Kumble, by one delivery. Tossed up, fizzing through, pitching on off and spinning in just a touch, Lara’s across the line swat was not good enough. The pad was struck, Kumble appealed as well as his plaster would allow and umpire David Shepherd confirmed that Lara (4) was plumb lbw.Hooper and Sarwan then went on to steady the ship. On a flat wicket, the last thing the West Indies needed was a flurry of wickets. And that almost happened. In the 64th over of the day, Kumble had Hooper caught at forward short-leg, only to see umpire Shepherd call a no-ball. Off the next ball, one thatbounced and turned, Hooper flashed hard to slip. Dravid got hishands to it but could not latch onto the chance. The rest of the day, thankfully, passed off uneventfully. Hooper chipped and drove his way to 26, Sarwan, the very picture of solidity and cool composure racked up 50.

Spurs on verge of sealing Antonio Conte

After nearly seven weeks, Tottenham Hotspur’s managerial search is almost over…

What’s the word?

According to The Guardian’s Dave Hytner, Spurs are closing in on the appointment of former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte after positive talks between the two parties.

It’s thought that there is confidence at the club that the 51-year-old will sign on the dotted line, meaning Daniel Levy is very close to sealing a landmark hire.

The Lilywhites also want to recruit a new sporting director in the shape of Fabio Paratici, who has previously worked with Conte during a very successful spell at Juventus, where they won three Serie A titles.

It’s almost over

It certainly seems like Spurs’ quest to find the best successor to Jose Mourinho is finally drawing to a close.

There have been many bumps along the way, with several mooted top targets being ruled out of the running, such as Julian Naglesmann opting for Bayern Munich or Brendan Rodgers choosing to remain at Leicester City.

It’s also believed that Spurs made a big play for former coach Mauricio Pochettino but there was no way Paris Saint-Germain were letting him leave.

After so many setbacks, the north London faithful can finally start to get excited about the prospects of a new era at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Levy nears the capture of Conte.

The Athletic claimed that Mourinho “sucked the culture out of the club” whilst many supporters laid into the Portuguese throughout the campaign, with some calling him a “dinosaur” and “washed up.”

Conte helped end an 11-year wait for the title at Inter Milan this season and has won a total of nine major trophies throughout his managerial career, including a Premier League and FA Cup at Chelsea, where he cleaned up Mourinho’s mess.

The 58-year-old left before the Blues went on to record their worst top-flight finish since 1996 but the Italian came in and won the league the very next season.

Hytner also claimed that Conte wants to be backed in the transfer window, so you’d imagine there have been assurances by Levy, as otherwise the club wouldn’t be on the verge of sealing his services.

Therefore, the Spurs fanbase should be buzzing by this latest news as they seemingly prepare to embark on an exciting and fresh start with Conte.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Bertrand links

Crystal Palace have been linked with a move for Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand.

And, as to be expected, a number of Palace fans have been giving their thoughts to the news on social media.

According to the Evening Standard, Palace are tracking the 31-year-old, who looks set to be a free agent in the summer.

Arsenal are also thought to be keen on the full-back, who is on £72,500-a-week at St Mary’s. He’s been a regular under Ralph Hasenhuttl for the majority of the campaign, making 34 appearances in all competitions.

Bertrand, who was labelled as ‘brilliant’ last year, has been with the Saints since 2015, but it looks as if he’ll call time on his career with the club over the coming months, with the Evening Standard claiming he will not sign a new deal.

@cpfc_xtra shared the links on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon. This is what these fans had to say, with one seemingly making reference to Bertrand replacing Patrick van Aanholt at Selhurst Park.

Allegri would consider Spurs approach

According to the Evening Standard, Massimiliano Allegri would consider an approach to become Tottenham’s new manager.

Spurs remain on the lookout for a new manager after Jose Mourinho was relieved of his duties last month.

A number of big names have been linked with the role, including Julian Nagelsmann (Archie Rhind-Tutt), Maurizio Sarri (Calciomercato) and Erik Ten Hag (The Guardian). Allegri has also been mentioned as a potential appointment (football.london).

The Latest: Allegri would consider approach

According to this latest report, it would appear that the former Juventus manager would consider a move to north London if an offer were made.

The Verdict: A winner

Tottenham have failed to win a trophy since 2008, and there is a general consensus that they have continually underachieved. If they were to appoint Allegri, they would be bringing in a winner.

The 53-year-old has 15 trophies to his name throughout his career, including 13 major pieces of silverware, and he has also reached the Champions League final on two separate occasions with Juventus.

He remains a free agent after departing Juve in 2019. The Premier League would be a new experience for him, of course – he is yet to manage outside of Italy despite taking charge of more than 500 senior career matches – but he has the experience and the track record to suggest he would be capable of doing a good job at Tottenham if Daniel Levy makes him an offer.

Celtic: Howe to target Cook as key signing

Eddie Howe looks set to become Celtic’s new manager and already has his sights set on Bournemouth defender Steve Cook as a key Hoops signing.

That’s according to The Scottish Sun, who claimed that the 29-year-old could find it hard to turn down a potential reunion with Howe at Celtic Park over the coming months.

Cook to Celtic on a free transfer?

The centre-back, valued at £6.3m by Transfermarkt, is out of contract in the summer and so could make the move to Glasgow on a free transfer.

According to the report, Cook could even be seen by Howe as Celtic’s next captain, with current skipper Scott Brown set to join Aberdeen in the summer.

Transfer Tavern take

Cook is on £45,000 per week, the same wage as Josh King, who has also been tipped to reunite with Howe at Parkhead.

In our view, the defender could prove to be an excellent addition on a free transfer if it materialises, taking all things into consideration.

He has made more than 150 appearances in the Premier League, knows how Howe works and could provide fierce competition to the likes of Kristoffer Ajer, Christopher Jullien and Stephen Welsh.

Kamara endured difficult night with Finland

Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara has been with his national side Finland during the international break, although his latest performance may be a cause for concern for Steven Gerrard.

The former Dundee man played the full 90 minutes for Finland as they drew 1-1 with Ukraine in a World Cup qualifying game on Sunday but he struggled to have any real impression on the game.

As per SofaScore, the 25-year-old midfielder would earn a disappointing 6.2 match rating for his display, which was the second-worst of any player who featured in the game, with Ukraine’s Vitaliy Mykolenko earning a 6.0/10 rating after he was sent off for a professional foul late on, which allowed Teemu Pukki to score a late equaliser from the penalty spot.

Although Kamara had the most touches of any Finland midfielder or attacker, he struggled to do anything productive with the ball, as he failed to contribute a single key pass, cross or long ball during the game.

The 25-year-old is renowned at Rangers for his ability to win back the ball and win battles in midfield, but he failed to showcase this at the weekend, as he failed to make a single tackle during the game.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read this week’s latest Rangers news, transfer rumours and more!”]

He also lost all five of his duels during the game and failed to complete a single dribble emphasising that the Ukraine midfield generally had the better of him throughout the game.

In comparison to Kamara, Ukraine’s midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi, who picked up the man of the match award for his display, would contribute four key passes, complete four dribbles and long passes, and win nine duels in what was an excellent all-round display from the Atalanta man.

[freshpress-quiz id=“588789″]

Therefore, this emphasises how poor Kamara was on Sunday, with the £4.05 million-rated midfielder enduring something of a nightmare display, and he will be relieved that his side were able to rescue a late point despite his poor performance.

Gerrard will be hoping his midfielder’s performance on international duty does not dent his confidence ahead of his return to club action in the near future.

And, in other news… Bye-bye Edmundson: Rangers signing £1.08m-rated beast would surely be the end for 23 y/o at Ibrox

WBA: Baggies interested in Tufan

According to reports from Turkey, West Bromwich Albion are tracking Fenerbahce midfielder, Ozan Tufan, ahead of the summer transfer window.

The report by Sabah (via Sport Witness) claims that a number of Premier League clubs, including West Brom, Everton and Crystal Palace, are keen on a move for Tufan this summer, with Sam Allardyce’s side specifically mentioned as being “closely interested” in the 26-year-old central midfielder.

However, Sabah go on to claim that West Brom’s likely relegation from the top flight could result in Tufan being put off of a potential switch to The Hawthorns, with the player already reported to not “look very warmly” on a move to the club.

Furthermore, with Fenerbahce said to be expecting any potential buyer to pay the Turkey international’s €20 million (£17 million) release clause if they are to part with the midfielder, should West Brom indeed drop down to the Championship come the end of the season, it is questionable whether the Baggies would be able to afford such a deal.

Transfer Tavern Take

Putting aside the potential complications of a West Brom move for Tufan, after looking at the 26-year-old’s statistics, it would certainly appear as if the midfielder would make a fine addition to Allardyce’s options in the middle of the park.

So far this season, the £8.55 million-rated Fenerbahce star has scored five goals and registered six assists over his 26 Super Lig appearances, while the player’s previous manager at the Turkish side, Vitor Pereira, drew comparisons between Tufan and Yaya Toure.

However, with the sizeable transfer fee, in addition to the player’s apparent lack of interest, it would very much seem as if West Brom have will face a real struggle to get a deal for Tufan over the line this summer.
