Anderson voted Player of the Year

James Anderson has been named England Cricketer of the Year for 2011/12. Anderson, the 29-year-old swing bowler, has taken 46 wickets in 11 Tests from the start of the 2011 English season and has risen to No. 3 in the ICC Test bowling rankings. He also played a key role in England’s defeat of India – a result that confirmed England as the No. 1 rated Test side – and proved his worth in all conditions with excellent performances in the UAE and Sri Lanka.Anderson, who claimed his 250th Test wicket and rose to fifth on the list of England’s all-time Test wicket-takers during the period, beat off competition from fellow nominees Stuart Broad and Alastair Cook to win the award which is decided by votes from members of the cricket media. Charlotte Edwards was named England Women’s Cricketer of the Year, while Daniel Bell-Drummond won the England Development Programme Cricketer of the Year and Callum Rigby won the England Disability Cricketer of the Year award.”It’s an amazing achievement and I’m really proud of it,” Anderson said. “There have been so many successful individual performances over the last year so it’s nice to be recognised for performing well over the last 12 months.”The last two years I’ve shown what I can actually do at this level. It’s been a frustrating eight years before that – a bit up and down – but I’ve been really pleased with my performance in the last two years. The challenge is to try to keep improving and push on.”Anderson claimed two five-wicket hauls in Test cricket over the 12-month period: 5 for 65 against India at Lord’s and 5 for 72 against Sri Lanka in Galle. Perhaps more impressively, he showed he now has the skills to adapt to any conditions with a series of fine performances in the UAE and Sri Lanka. It is hard to recall a single poor spell from him on either tour.”Knowing my game has been the biggest thing,” Anderson said, explaining his consistency over the last couple of years. “Knowing that I can bowl a ball on a length for a period of time is what all bowlers strive for and is something that was missing from my game for the first part of my career. Being able to do it game after game is something I’ve been able to develop really well over the past couple of years.

Leading Test wicket-takers for England

  • Ian Botham 383

  • Bob Willis 325

  • Fred Trueman 307

  • Derek Underwood 297

  • James Anderson 258

“I’ve always been able to swing the ball but I’ve added different skills throughout my career, and I think being able to bowl in all sorts of conditions has been a problem – not just for me, but for a lot of English bowlers over the years when we’ve gone away with unfamiliar conditions, we’ve struggled with that. But I think now all of the bowlers in this group have got good skills to take away from us, and that’s really exciting when we’ve got tours of India and places like that coming up.”Anderson insisted he had no thoughts about overtaking Ian Botham’s record as England’s leading wicket taker – Botham claimed 383 Test wickets – but said he hoped he could continue playing for many years to come.”If I maintain the same work ethic that I have done throughout my career, I don’t see why I can’t keep this form up for a good few years,” Anderson said. “I feel fit and strong and I think the fitness is probably going to play the biggest part in how long I keep playing for.”I keep getting reminded about the record. It’s nice to be up there, and having taken 250-plus Test wickets is an amazing achievement for me and I’m really proud of that. But I just want to stay on the field and play games for England. When I sit down at the end of my career, I can look back on 500-600 wickets hopefully.”Although the award is meant to recognise “outstanding performances in all formats of international cricket over the past year” it is safe to conclude that Anderson won for his Test form. He has not played international T20 cricket in the period and, though his ODI form improved steadily after a disappointing World Cup in early 2011, he is no longer an automatic selection in that format.”I’d love to be with England involved in all three formats,” he said. “It’s not been the case in the last couple of years but I was in the squad for the last World Cup and I’d love to get into the side. I’m in a position now where I’ve got to knock on the door of that team, so if I get the chance to play any T20 cricket for Lancashire this year I’ve got to use that to try to put pressure on the guys who are in the team already. I’ve just got to wait for a chance to arise.”Cook might consider himself unfortunate not to have won. Cook not only scored three ODI centuries (two against Pakistan and one against Sri Lanka) and averaged 54.29 over the period but he grew in stature as the ODI captain and led England to series victories over both World Cup finalists – India and Sri Lanka – as well as a rare victory in overseas conditions in Pakistan. His Test form was less consistent, but he still averaged 55.47 over the year, with a career-best 294 against India and two centuries against Sri Lanka the highlights.Broad, meanwhile, averaged 31.41 with the bat and 23.04 with the ball in Tests over the 12-month period. He is also the only one of the three shortlisted candidates currently playing in all three formats. But he did enjoy some consolation as he won the Fans’ Moment of the Year Award, voted for by members of ECB’s Twelfth Man fan community, for his hat-trick against India in last summer’s Trent Bridge Test.

Focus turns to World Twenty20

Pakistan could be forgiven for a certain lack of enthusiasm as they approach the final stage of their three-series contest against England in the UAE. Beaten, homesick and recovering from flu, the Pakistan team looked a dispirited bunch by the time England secured a 4-0 clean sweep of the ODI series. Having out-witted and out-performed England in an absorbing Test series, Pakistan looked far less competent in the shorter format. By the end, they looked as if they just wanted to go home. But this T20 series matters. With Pakistan having won the Test series and England the ODIs, Misbah-ul-Haq has described the T20 leg of the tour as “the decider” between the two countries.More pertinently, the series provides both sides with an excellent opportunity to develop plans ahead of September’s World T20 in Sri Lanka. After these three matches are played, England will have four more T20 internationals ahead of the event – one against West Indies and three against South Africa – while Pakistan are currently scheduled to play three – two against Sri Lanka and one against Australia. It leaves little time to identify the players or the tactics required for success.”This is very important series for us,” Misbah said. “We won the Tests, they won the ODIs and now this T20 series is almost the decider. And, if you consider that this is World Twenty20 year, it is very important for our confidence as a team to perform well and win this series. We need to regain our confidence.”We want to win desperately, so that’s why, at times, when the game is slipping out of your hands, we might look dispirited. But I don’t think that we are. I know this team, they are keen to win and they are going to pull things back for us.”We are really confident. We are putting in some good performances but we just can’t finish them and go over the victory line. We need to turn good performance into victories but I am confident this form of the game suits us and we can come back and perform better.”The margin between the sides was not, perhaps, as great as the ODI score line suggests. Had Pakistan held a couple of vital catches, results could have gone the other way. But as it is, their fielding and batting require some work. Questions are also being asked about Misbah’s tactics and whether a new captain should be considered for the limited-overs formats.Pakistan will, on the whole, stick with the same group of players. Awais Zia, an uncapped left-handed batsman, could well come into the side at the top of the order, while Hammad Azam – strangely overlooked in the ODI series – could also come into the reckoning. But Misbah is keen to allow the team the chance to “do our wrongs right”.Pakistan have won their last four T20s – though two of those games were against Zimbabwe and another against Bangladesh – and had lost seven of their previous eight before that.England also have much to do if they are to retain the World T20 trophy they won in the Caribbean in 2010. They have won 11 of their last 14 T20s but, under the captaincy of Stuart Broad, have won one and lost one. Since the departure of Paul Collingwood, they are in something of a transition. This is the first time they will have played a three match T20 series against one other nation. There is much to be decided. Broad confirmed that Alastair Cook was not just with the squad as cover but would be considered for selection on the same basis as everyone else. He is therefore one of four men with a claim to bat at the top of the order. Kevin Pietersen, who bounced back to form with successive centuries in the final two ODIs, is another obvious contender giving enjoyed conspicuous success since his elevation in ODIs, while Craig Kieswetter opened in the World T20 and has done so ever since. Alex Hales came into the T20 side in August and has opened in England’s last four matches but is now under some pressure to retain his place. The presence of Cook will inevitably lead to speculation that he could, in time, captain England in all three formats. But such talk is surely premature and Broad dismissed the suggestion that his own position as captain might be threatened by Cook.”Not at all,” he said. “I’ve got the Twenty20 job. I’ve been trusted in that position and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. No reassurances needed to be given. We’ve worked closely as three captains, as we have done for nearly a year now, and that doesn’t change overnight.”It’s great to be back in charge and I’m delighted to be leading the side after the confidence we’ve gained from a 4-0 victory in the one-day series. We have very similar personnel within the set-up.”It’s an exciting opportunity and it’s the first chance we’ve had to have three games on the bounce, where we can really learn and develop. And, obviously, look to win.”We need to make use of every game because there aren’t that many leading to the World T20. Obviously, with that being in the sub-continent, we need to make use of these conditions here in Dubai.”We won’t have any subcontinent Twenty20 cricket until the warm-up games for the World T20. It makes these games pretty important from a learning perspective. But we’re not looking at these games just as warm-ups; we’re looking to win this series. That’s what we’ll be focusing on.”England declared a few injury concerns. Broad enigmatically declined the name the players, though Ravi Bopara, who missed the final ODI with a sore back, batted and bowled in the nets without any obvious discomfort. Training was optional on Wednesday, with most of the side that contested the ODI on Tuesday electing for rest.Edited by Alex Winter

Aimee Watkins retires from all forms of cricket

Aimee Watkins, the New Zealand captain, has retired from all forms of cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Jul-2011Aimee Watkins, the New Zealand captain, has retired from all forms of cricket. Watkins, 28, played two Tests, 103 one-day internationals and 36 Twenty20 games in a career spanning nine years. She made her debut in an ODI against Australia at Adelaide in 2002 and quickly became a fixture in the side with her aggressive batting and accurate offspin. She retires as the fifth ranked all-rounder in women’s cricket, having racked up 1889 ODI runs and 772 Twenty20 runs, to go with 92 and 22 wickets respectively, in the two formats. In addition to her international exploits, Watkins has also been a key member of the Central Districts squad since 1998, and said she was very grateful for the opportunities to represent New Zealand and Central Districts.”This is not a decision I have taken lightly and believe it’s the right time to step down. I have given it my all over the past nine years with the White Ferns [New Zealand] and eleven years with the Central Hinds [Central Districts] and really enjoyed it,” she said. “Cricket has been a massive part of my life for a long time and I’m going miss it, especially the people. I walk away with a lot of warm memories.”I would like to thank my family, friends, coaches, Taranaki Cricket, NZC and everyone who has supported me over the years.”The highest point of Watkins’ career was the 2009 World Cup, where she finished as New Zealand’s leading wicket-taker with 11 scalps, including 4 for 2 against South Africa. She took over as New Zealand captain after Haidee Tiffen’s retirement in 2009.Gary Stead, the New Zealand women’s coach, thanked Watkins for her service to cricket, calling her one of the “most consistent allrounders for a long period of time”.”Everyone associated with women’s cricket will be grateful to Aimee for the immense contribution she has made,” Stead said. “I’m sure it was a tough decision because everyone who knows her is aware of the pleasure and pride she has in representing the White Ferns.”She has been one of the most consistent allrounders for a long period of time and a key member of the White Ferns squad, as well as a fine leader. Aimee is also a marvellous role model and great ambassador both on and off the field.”The new captain will be named in due course. Watkins signed off by top-scoring with 32 in her last game against India, but her effort was in vain as New Zealand lost the third-place play-off in the NatWest Women’s Quadrangular Series.

Spurs: Levy had a masterclass with Kevin Wimmer

While Daniel Levy has hardly been the most popular figure at Spurs over the years, if there’s one thing the club’s chairman has proven, is that he’s a very tough negotiator.

His work in the transfer market has seen some mixed success, but when it’s come to offloading players, his desire to drive a hard bargain and get the absolute best out of a deal has seen the Lilywhites profit massively – not least from forgotten man Kevin Wimmer.

After watching him make his first Premier League start against Crystal Palace, then Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino raved about what Wimmer could bring to the table.

He said: “He is like Vertonghen but younger. You can see he (Wimmer) is very calm, he has a very good left foot. He is very strong, a nice person. He has a lot of attributes. He is very young and for that we signed him.

“We are sure that Kevin can do well. He had the possibility to play in different games – maybe not as much as he expected – and he was good. He showed the quality and his teammates trust him.”

Sadly for Wimmer and Spurs, things didn’t quite work out the way they would have wanted.

Just a few years after joining, the Austrian joined Stoke City for a reported fee of around £18m, with the centre-back barely making a genuine mark on the Spurs first-team in his time in north London.

He made just 31 appearances for the club before his switch to Stoke, and from then on, things have just gone from bad to worse for the defender.

After dropping completely out of favour with the Potters – so much so that the 28-year-old even started playing more regularly for the club’s U23s – Wimmer was allowed to join German second-tier side Karlsruher on loan.

And then, last summer, it was revealed that the big central defender had had his contract at Stoke terminated, and he has since joined returned home to his native Austria to play for Rapid Vienna.

It’s been a huge fall from grace for the Austria international, but one that surely has Levy laughing all the way to the bank.

To get a fee of £18m for him, and now for Wimmer to be worth just £720k as per Transfermarkt, speaks volumes about the kind of backroom work that the Spurs chief did when cashing in on him.

Make no mistake about it, given Pochettino’s hype about him, and just how few games he ended up playing for Spurs, Wimmer was a disaster in north London.

But he’s been even worse since leaving the Lilywhites, and that just says it all. Levy played an absolute blinder in cashing in on him at the best time.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have been handed a boost in their chase for this star…

Jones and van Jaarsveld make Essex pay

Injuries to Ravi Bopara and Maurice Chambers gave Kent a slightly unfair advantage on the opening day in Canterbury where the hosts closed on 360 for 6

Injuries to Ravi Bopara and Maurice Chambers gave Kent a slightly unfair advantage on the opening day in Canterbury where the hosts closed on 360 for 6.A fourth-wicket stand of 176 in 41 overs helped Kent recover from a sticky start and the loss of their captain Rob Key in only the eighth over, by which time Bopara had already limped off clutching his back only to be followed soon after by Chambers who succumbed to a side strain.Having elected to bat first after winning the toss, Key, playing his first game since fracturing a little finger at The Rose Bowl three weeks ago, got off to a positive start with boundaries in each of the opening two overs. But with his score on 13 Key turned one off his pads from Chambers only to see Jaik Mickleburgh pocket a reflex catch at forward short leg that made it 26 for 1.Kent promoted Sam Notheast to bat at No. 3, the berth occupied hitherto this year and last by Jones, and the youngster responded with four stylish boundaries in a cameo 25 before tossing away his wicket to Essex debutant Bryce McGain.Advancing down the wicket to drive, Northeast failed to get to the pitch of it and simply lofted a catch to long off where substitute fielder Grant Flower took a fine running catch. Three overs after lunch Australian leg-spinner McGain, a 38-year-old one-Test wonder, accounted for Joe Denly by finding a thin outside edge through to James Foster. With both Bopara and Chambers out of action, experienced fourth-wicket partners Jones and van Jaarsveld took advantage by posting Kent’s second best stand of the Championship campaign over the best part of three hours. Van Jaarsveld, suffering his worst season since joining Kent from Northamptonshire in 2005, went on to post his first championship hundred of the campaign from 148-balls and with 13 fours and a six.He celebrated with another boundary of McGain, but the wrist spinner then enticed the South African to miscue an attempted on-drive to mid- off where former Kent player David Masters took a comfortable catch.Geraint Jones was a single shy of his second hundred of the summer when he too, needlessly got out to McGain. Looking to loft over the bowler’s head, Jones mistimed to mid-on to end his 155-ball stay on a disappointing note. McGain finished his 30 overs for the day with figures of 4 for 135.With two of their bowling department out of action and undergoing treatment, Essex delayed taking the second new ball for 10 overs, but it finally did the trick in the penultimate over of the day. Having garnered an attractive 34 from 65 balls Darren Stevens aimed an ambitious drive ‘on the up’ only to edge to Tim Phillips at second slip and give Masters his first wicket of the match.
