Celtic have been linked with a move to sign a player from direct Premiership rivals Hibernian as they monitor their teenaged defensive talent Josh Doig.

Sky Sports have reported that the Hoops are amongst the clubs interested in signing the 18-year-old. If they want to snap up the left-back though, they may need to fight off Arsenal and Chelsea, who are also lurking, ready to pounce.

The Hoops have struggled defensively this season as they have fallen into the shadow of neighbours and rivals Rangers. The men from the blue side of Glasgow hold a whopping 23-point lead over the reigning champions and Celtic’s most recent loss to St Mirren only further highlights how unimaginable a comeback is at this stage.

Neil Lennon also struggled to guide his team through the Europa League group stages. After banking just four points, the Bhoys finished bottom of their group, having conceded the joint-most goals in the competition.

Strengthening their defence is definitely something Celtic must prioritise. Doig could prove to be an ideal signing, as not only would he cost very little judging by his £450,000 Transfermarkt value, but he is very similar to Celtic’s on-loan left-back Diego Laxalt.

According to WhoScored, the two are alike in their defensive performances this season. The pair average a similar amount of aerial duels won per match, plus tackles won and clearances made too. This potentiallt bodes extremely well for Doig, who is nine years Laxalt’s senior and still has a lot to learn.

However, his reliable nature for Hibs will have definitely caught the eye of Lenno, Peter Lawwell and Celtic’s other decision-makers. His defensive awareness, for a teenager, is very solid and he even caused Celtic star David Turnbull some problems the last time they met.

According to Sofascore, Doig made a crucial four tackles in the first half of the match and stopped Turnbull having a sniff at goal. It was only when the teen was substituted off in the second half that Celtic found a way through. Funnily enough, it was Turnbull who found the back of the net too, getting the better of Doig’s replacement, Lewis Stevenson.

If Lawwell can snap up the rising talent before too many other clubs become aware of his ability, he could have a defender for the future in his ranks for, potentially, a very low price.

Many Wolves fans heaped praise on forward Daniel Podence during the first half of his side’s Premier League clash against local rivals Aston Villa at Molineux.

The 25-year-old lined up in the number ten role for the West Midlands outfit, with Adama Traore and Pedro Neto alongside him, with Fabio Silva leading the attacking line.

Podence managed to get a few shots off on goal and was troubling the Villains backline, in what was an eye-opening performance from the Portuguese attacker (via The Guardian).

Before the game, Podence had scored twice and provided two assists from 10 starts and was looking to increase his tally before the Christmas period comes to a close (Whosc0red).

With this in mind, supporters were pleased with what they saw from Podence, who has become a mainstay in Nuno Espirito Santo’s side since his £16.6m move from Olympiakos last January.

Local MP Chi Onwurah has expressed her concern to The Chronicle over the silence surrounding the proposed takeover of Newcastle United.

As per the news outlet, The Department for International Trade (DIT) is withholding correspondence regarding the failed takeover at St. James’ Park by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabian’s (KSA) Public Investment Fund (PIF).

The Chronicle submitted no fewer than four freedom of information (FOI) requests about the takeover to Government departments and so far, none of them have agreed to release documents to do with the situation.

This has led Onwurah expressing her deep concern as to why this is the case when she spoke to the outlet:

“I am concerned that apparently, nothing of this correspondence can be shared with the public in whose interests it supposedly took place.

“I will ask them to, at least, set out whether they took a position on the takeover.”

What has Onwurah said about the takeover before?

Back in May earlier this year, Onwurah expressed that she was fully in favour of the prospective £300m deal between Mike Ashley and the Saudi-led consortium, suggesting how good it would be for the city and demanding that the voices of the Toon Army should be heard in Parliament.

Indeed, a lot has happened since then, and now there is a deep concern, not only from her but from fans of the Tyneside club, that the takeover may not happen after the Saudis failed with their initial bid.

Nonetheless, through the FOI request, The Chronicle surely have the right to know about some of the details as to why the takeover bid was rejected by the Premier League, and the release of such information could settle a lot of the supporters in the North East down, or perhaps rile them up even further, depending on what is said in the documents.

Is this the start of a stunning turnaround?

If you told Sunderland supporters that within a week of Lee Johnson walking through the door they’d score four unanswered goals, they’d have laughed in your face.

Although Johnson tasted defeat in his first game against Wigan, they bounced back in devastating fashion to utterly demolish Lincoln 4-0 last weekend.

All of a sudden, there is fresh positivity surrounding the Black Cats, something that has been far too infrequent over the last five or so years.

A clash against 14th place Wimbledon on Tuesday will be an interesting one and it is unlikely Johnson will make too many changes considering the previous result.

That being said, we’re tipping him to make one this evening.

The only change from Saturday’s win over the Imps is Aiden McGeady dropping out. The Irishman still hasn’t played a great deal of football since being drafted back into the senior side and like he was at Oldham, could be rested.

The tricky 5 ft 11 winger claimed an assist against Lincoln but so did Chris Maguire when Sunderland beat Oldham in the Papa John’s trophy last week.

Consequently, Maguire gets another run-out and an opportunity to prove himself. Johnson also has a big decision to make on Jack Diamond, someone we think should get the nod again.

He has been superb since the new head coach walked through the door and ran Lincoln ragged last time out, scoring and completing two dribbles.

Denver Hume, Luke O’Nien and Lynden Gooch are all still injured so it’s Callum McFadzean who starts once again on the left-hand side of the defence.

The midfield looked sturdy on Saturday so the usual trio of Josh Scowen, Grant Leadbitter and Max Power all start from the off.

Manchester United made a mess of the transfer window. The Red Devils had made a bright start by bringing in Donny van de Beek from Ajax at the beginning of the summer. Alex Telles joined Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side from FC Porto. But a last-minute swoop for former Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani has caused controversy.

According to ESPN, a number of first-team players are angry with the Argentine’s treatment at Old Trafford. Romero has fallen down the pecking order after Dean Henderson’s return and his hopes of joining Everton on deadline day were dashed due to United’s demands of a £10m transfer fee.

It’s claimed that the Toffees were unwilling to meet United’s asking price and decided to sign Swedish international Robin Olsen on a season-long loan from AS Roma instead.

Major mistake?

Despite the fact the free agent didn’t cost the club a single penny, it seems the Red Devils have made a major mistake. Henderson has made a phenomenal start to life at Old Trafford, keeping two consecutive clean sheets in the Carabao Cup.

Solskjaer confirmed Romero was “disappointed” to lose his place prior to the Europa League semi-final against Sevilla but heaped plenty of praise on the goalkeeper for his professionalism. However, he has also been left out of the Champions League squad in favour of Lee Grant, which suggests he has fallen even further down the pecking order.

Henderson seems to have seized the opportunity to become the backup option for Solskjaer’s first-choice shot-stopper David de Gea after a successful spell at Sheffield United. And Romero is reconsidering his options as a result. The former 96-cap Argentina international is interested in a move to Major League Soccer.

Per SofaScore, the 33-year-old played nine Europa League games last season, and kept seven clean sheets, whilst he averaged 1.2 saves and only conceded 0.2 goals per game, which shows he has shown no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

The last thing United need is a bloated squad, so you can only imagine the money they would have made if they’d sold him in the summer. With all of their latest acquisitions, they will need to balance the books and it makes no financial sense to be paying £70,000-per-week on a goalkeeper who it seems is unlikely to play at all this term.

And the MLS Secondary Transfer Window stays open until October 29th for transfer, trades and loan deals, which has left them with ample time to find a potential buyer. Get him gone, Ed, and do the right thing.

Plenty of Glasgow Rangers fans have been giving their thoughts on the club’s announcement of a new sponsorship deal.

On Monday, the Light Blues confirmed on their official website that they have teamed up with Seko Logistics, who are now the club’s official logistics partner, with their brand to be displayed on the upper back of the first team’s kits for the upcoming season. The news was also shared on the club’s official Twitter channel @RangersFC.

Seko will become the third sponsor to have their branding printed on ‘Gers kits, with 32Red as the main shirt sponsor on the front and The Energy Check featuring below the squad numbers on the back of the shirt. The Ibrox club also have a partnership with Unibet which sees their logo emblazoned on the team’s training kit.

These ‘Gers fans took to Twitter to give their views on the Seko Logistics sponsorship, with many lamenting the presence of yet another corporate sponsorship on the club’s kits for the new season:

Julgado em 6 de maio, pela Primeira Comissão Disciplinar,Textor foi punido com multa de R$ 60 mil e fixação de cinco dias para apresentação das provas que alega possuir sobre suposta manipulação de resultados na Série A ou demonstrar a impossibilidade de fazê-la,e absolvido na segunda infração no artigo 223.

A defesa recorreu pedindo a reforma, que resultou na absolvição do empresário, nesta quinta-feira. Os juízes decidiram remissão pela maioria dos votos. Seis sendo a favor da absolvição, contra dois que mantinham a punição. Nesta quinta, o relator Luiz Felipe Bulus optou pela absolvição de Textor. A decisão final seguiu o voto do relator. A maioria entendeu que o dono da SAF do Botafogo não poderia ser obrigado a apresentar as supostas provas, ainda em fase de inquérito.

– (John Textor) Não é o interlocutor, não é o titular da prova, só disse que tinha um áudio de um cara reclamando de não ter recebido propina. Textor não trouxe um nome, e vem o presidente do tribunal e diz: ‘Me entrega isso aqui’. Se formos profundamente nela, a exigência é ilegal (…). Não pode exigir algo que vai incriminar um terceiro, ainda mais aqui (STJD). – disse Michel Assef Filho, advogado de defesa.

Apesar da decisão do STJD, o dirigente ainda será julgado pelas manifestações de manipulações de resultados no Brasileirão. O dirigente foi enquadrado cinco vezes no artigo 243-F e uma no 221.
