Contra o Oeste, o técnico montou três escalações diferentes e analisou a maior parte do elenco.

Dolphins, Cobras look good for final

Vernon Philander, Robin Peterson and Beuran Hendricks took Cape Cobras to the cusp of the Ram Slam T20 Challenge final with a bonus-point victory over Lions in Johannesburg. All nine wickets that fell to the bowlers were shared equally among the trio as the home side was bundled out for 102The new ball proved devastating after Cobras elected to field. Philander struck twice in the third over, Hendricks followed suit in the next and Lions were reeling at 18 for 5. Quinton de Kock and Chris Morris appeased Lions’ dire need for a partnership with a 53-run union for the sixth wicket. But once that was broken, courtesy Peterson, the tail was exposed and the left-arm spinner treated himself to a couple of wickets. The Cobras chase had few problems. Aaron Phangiso did claim a couple of wickets, but the target was too small to cause much strife in the visitors’ dressing room. A controlled 45-run stand between Dane Vilas and Stiaan Van Zyl ushered them towards victory and the captain Justin Ontong sealed it in the 16th over.Cameron Delport and Keshav Maharaj starred for Dolphins, who stayed in title contention by securing a bonus point as they beat Knights by 40 runs in a rain-affected clash in Durban. Six overs were lost to rain after the innings break and the revised target of 127 proved beyond Knights’ reach.Having been put in, Dolphins were given a rapid start and though Morne van Wyk succumbed after one shot too many, Delport kept growing in confidence. He slammed three consecutive sixes in the 13th over to plough past his fifty. And though he was out in the next over, David Miller took charge of the final overs, striking four fours and a six during a 27-ball 39 to hike the score to 170Knights’ battle against a required rate of nine runs per over got off to a poor start when they lost their openers inside three overs. They lost five wickets for 13 runs between the eighth and 11th overs, which killed off the contest. Slow left-armer Maharaj picked up three wickets, while Kyle Abbott, Robbie Frylinck and Daryn Smit chipped in with two eachDolphins could secure a home final, provided they get a favourable result against Lions on Sunday and Cobras lose their final game against Warriors. However, if Cobras win they top the table and go through to the final and Dolphins would have to settle for hosting the second place play-off game.

Strauss reveals Pietersen troubles

Andrew Strauss has revealed for the first time how he feared his England team would be undermined by Kevin Pietersen’s antipathy towards those running English cricket long before matters came to a head in August 2012.

Andrew Strauss has revealed for the first time how he feared his England team would be undermined by Kevin Pietersen’s antipathy towards those running English cricket long before matters came to a head in a home series against South Africa in 2012.The fallout from the ECB’s refusal to sanction Pietersen’s wish to retire from 50-over cricket, and also be free to play more IPL, was seen in a long-running furore centred upon a series of disenchanted text messages sent by Pietersen to South African players.Strauss has now admitted that he suspected “treachery” as the affair so dominated the summer and ensured that what should have been a celebration of Strauss’ 100th Test at Lord’s instead became a frustrated climax to his career. He retired “tired and generally hacked off with life”.In his new autobiography, which is being serialised in the Daily Mail, Strauss tells of how he took Pietersen aside at a golf day ahead of the South Africa series to discuss his state of mind. “I had heard some troubling rumours he might be preparing to separate himself from English cricket after a further attempt to get the ECB to yield ground had failed,” he writes.”At a golf day a few days before the first Test, I took him to one side to ask what was going on. It was clear he was far from happy. I challenged him to think about his legacy and the goals he wanted to reach with the rest of his career. Unfortunately, we were interrupted and it is fair to say that I did not know at the time quite how close he was to the edge.”England suffered a heavy defeat in the opening Test and the Pietersen situation worsened in the week of the second Test at Headingley. “On the practice days, he seemed completely withdrawn, as though he was consciously distancing himself from the team, and on the first day of the game itself he seemed determined to let everyone in the ground know just how unhappy he was.”As captain, I could not let it go and I called him into a back room to make it clear his behaviour was unacceptable. I was shocked by his lack of contrition and his apparent hostility towards me. It felt as though he was trying to goad me into a confrontation. It was almost as if he was trying to engineer an excuse to turn his back on the team.”Despite his issues, Pietersen played one of his finest Test innings at Headingley; 149 that helped England get a foothold in the series. But in his press conference that followed, he expressed his difficulties and suggested he was about to take some decisions that “would make me very happy”.”I was unsurprised to then hear Kevin had given a disturbing press conference following what was a thrilling drawn Test match. What greatly puzzled me, though, was his comment that, ‘It’s tough being me, playing for England’, seemingly implying he was being treated badly by his team-mates in the dressing room. For me, he had crossed the line. He seemed to be at best destabilising and at worst undermining our carefully cultivated team environment.”Strauss describes the draining effect Pietersen’s behaviour had on his captaincy. “I feel incredibly tired, as though I have simply run out of energy – I have nothing more to give,” he said. “I am also wallowing in a rising tide of sadness. This is not the way I wanted my England career to end.”Pietersen was dropped for the final Test at Lord’s but the issue marred Strauss’s 100th Test. He retired following the defeat and admitted his “unbelievable frustration” at the manner in which his carer ended.”This is the last time I will make this walk as an England cricketer, although I am far too frustrated, tired and generally hacked off with life for it to be a rousing emotional affair,” he writes. “I find my space in the far corner of the room, near the television set, and sit down. I pack my helmet in my kitbag and then bury my head in my hands. For 10 minutes I sit, unable to move.”

Fawad Ahmed named in Australia ODI squad

Fawad Ahmed is expected to make his long-awaited debut for Australia during the limited-overs series that follows the Ashes after being named in an 18-man squad at the expense of Xavier Doherty. Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has also been included and should play his first ODI in three years, while Doherty and the allrounder Mitchell Marsh were the only players dropped from the squad that contested the Champions Trophy in June. The most fascinating inclusion is that of Ahmed, a legspinner who arrived in Australia in 2010 as an asylum seeker from Pakistan, where he had played ten first-class games over four years. Ahmed impressed for Victoria during the 2012-13 season and his Australian citizenship was fast-tracked this year in an effort to make him available for the Ashes, although he was ultimately not chosen in the Test squad. But Australia’s selectors remain keen on Ahmed as an international option and have been impressed by his bowling during the ongoing Australia A tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa. Although Ahmed has collected only two wickets in the five one-day games on the tour, the selectors believe he has bowled better than his figures indicate, and he will be the lead spinner alongside allrounder Glenn Maxwell in the limited-overs games in England.

Changes to Australia’s ODI squad from the Champions Trophy

  • In: Fawad Ahmed, Josh Hazlewood, Aaron Finch, Shaun Marsh, Steven Smith

  • Out: Xavier Doherty, Mitchell Marsh

“Fawad Ahmed gets his opportunity as the squad’s lead spinner,” the national selector John Inverarity said. “Fawad has been a consistent wicket-taker on the Australia A tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa. He is a mature and very good leg-spin bowler, and the national selection panel is keen to see how he fares in international competition … He has been bowling very well in South Africa and turning the ball and troubling the batsmen so we’re keen to have a look at him.”He takes Xavier Doherty’s place. Xavier has been a fine performer for Australia over the years. We haven’t selected the side for India, for the seven ODIs there in October, but it’s likely that both players will be on that tour. He [Doherty] is very much a known quantity and he’s a wonderful young man and a very good cricketer. He can be hopeful that further opportunities will come his way.”The 18-man squad will gather for the two Twenty20s against England that follow the Ashes and the group will then be trimmed to 15 for the one-off ODI against Scotland and five against England in September. While Mitchell Marsh was replaced by Steven Smith after having limited impact in the Champions Trophy, his brother Shaun was included and is likely to play in the T20s, but whether he remains part of the squad for the ODIs is unclear. The same can be said of Aaron Finch, who has been captain of Australia A during the African tour, while the rest of the batting line-up was largely as expected. However, there was no place for Nic Maddinson, the young New South Wales batsman who has played a number of eye-catching innings for Australia A in the British Isles and Africa over the past couple of months, including a remarkable 181 from 143 balls against Gloucestershire in Bristol.”While he hasn’t been selected in this squad, the national selection panel also notes the strong performances of Nic Maddinson in recent months for Australia A,” Inverarity said. “We look forward to him continuing to build on that good form and pressing his claims for higher honours in the future.”The pace attack will be led by the experienced Mitchell Johnson and Clint McKay, but also features younger talent including Nathan Coulter-Nile, who made his T20 international debut in February, and Hazlewood, who also reappeared in the national side via February’s T20 against West Indies. Hazlewood, 22, made his ODI debut in England in 2010 but has always been regarded by the selectors as a player to watch.”We’re looking forward to him showing his wares in international cricket again,” Inverarity said. “He made his debut for Australia in 2010 at the age of 19. Three years later he’s a stronger young man and a better bowler. He has been very impressive with his form in Zimbabwe and South Africa.”I’ve been talking with Andy Bichel, who’s the selector on duty in Zimbabwe and South Africa, and Josh has been very impressive, has bowled with good pace and good accuracy and has been moving the ball. I think it’s the right time for him to come through and join the international squad.”Squad Michael Clarke (ODI capt), George Bailey (T20 capt), Fawad Ahmed, Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Josh Hazlewood, Phillip Hughes, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Clint McKay, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Adam Voges, Matthew Wade (wk), David Warner, Shane Watson.

Lights on for Jamaica? Cricket West Indies aims for day-night Australia Test

If it goes ahead as a pink-ball Test, it would just be the second staged in West Indies

Andrew McGlashan03-Apr-2025Cricket West Indies officials are hopeful that Sabina Park in Jamaica will be able to host its first day-night Test when Australia visit for the third match of their series in July.Tickets for the series went on sale earlier this week and the third Test is listed as a day-night encounter, with a 1.30pm local start time, following two red-ball matches in Barbados and Grenada. However, making it a pink-ball Test remains dependent on the completion of floodlight upgrade works to bring the venue up to international standards.Sabina Park has never hosted any day-night international cricket due to the poor quality of the lights.Cricket Australia is supportive of the Test being a day-nighter and it’s understood officials will visit Jamaica as part of a pre-tour inspection this month. Australia have never played a day-night Test overseas.”The Australians have agreed for it to be a day-night Test match,” Chris Dehring said at a press conference on Monday. “It is of course subject to the new lighting system that’s being implemented at Sabina Park, that it is finished in time and of course to specification”We have in place a very strong monitoring and support system to help the Jamaica Cricket Association and the Jamaican government achieve this. We are certainly looking forward to hosting the very first day-night match.”0:47

Shamar Joseph on winning men’s debutant of the year

The President of the Jamaica Cricket Association, Dr Donovan Bennett, told in February that the initial hope had been to have the lights installed by January but there had been delays.”We are supposed to get the lights from our local supplier who will source them from a manufacturer in England,” he said. “There were some technical challenges because while we could have gotten cheaper lights from China, they were too heavy for the existing stands at Sabina Park. The wind forces on the pylons would have been a major issue.”West Indies has previously hosted one day-night Test, against Sri Lanka in Barbados in 2018.Last year, they handed Australia their first defeat in a day-night Test with the famous Shamar Joseph-inspired victory at the Gabba. Overall, Australia have won 12 of their 13 pink-ball Tests but they have all been played at home.”First and foremost, I do recall, if memory serves me right, the last time we beat Australia, it was a day-night Test,” Dehring said. “So it’s a maybe superficial example to use, but maybe it’s just a good omen.”For both teams, the series will be their first in the 2025-2027 World Test Championship cycle, with Australia heading to the Caribbean after June’s final of the current edition against South Africa at Lord’s.It will be Australia’s first Test tour of West Indies since 2015, which featured a Test at Sabina Park that the visitors won by 277 runs with Steven Smith making 199.
