Manchester United now shock contenders to sign £15m-a-year Man City ace

With the summer transfer window fast approaching, Manchester United are now reportedly shock contenders to sign a struggling player from arch-rivals Manchester City this summer.

Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time that a player has crossed the Manchester divide. The likes of Carlos Tevez and Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel spring to mind in what is a list full of controversy. Tevez’s switch proved to be particularly successful too, with the Argentine winning the Premier League ahead of his former club whilst at The Etihad.

Since the talented forward, many have decided against crossing the divide between the two Manchester clubs. The trend isn’t completely dead just yet, however.

Across the last 12 months, as Leroy Sane has deliberated over a new contract with Bayern Munich, Manchester United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign the German winger alongside many others. Sane, of course, enjoyed great success at Manchester City but could now join the Red Devils on a free transfer when the summer arrives.

What is clearer than ever is that the narrative has flipped between the two sides. Whilst in the Schmeichel era, it was the Citizens watching on with envy, hoping to steal Manchester United’s stars, it is now the complete opposite. The Red Devils would likely take several of Pep Guardiola’s stars in a heartbeat at Old Trafford, especially following such a disastrous campaign.

Man Utd set to sell star Amorim texted Ratcliffe about in major overhaul

The Manchester United manager isn’t messing around.

ByTom Cunningham May 23, 2025

On course to finish as low as 16th off the back of already losing the Europa League final, Manchester United and Ruben Amorim must get things right this summer. In a desperate position, it could be the perfect time for a Manchester trend to reappear in the transfer window.

Man Utd shock contenders to sign Grealish

According to The Independent’s Miguel Delaney, as relayed by GiveMeSport, Manchester United are now shock contenders to sign Jack Grealish from Manchester City this summer in a deal that all parties could yet be happy to complete. The former Aston Villa star has struggled to take his place in the spotlight for some time at The Etihad despite taking home over £15m each year in wages, so City would be happy to sell while the player himself wants a regular starting role.

One Manchester club’s trash may well prove to be another’s treasure, then. For all of Grealish’s struggles, he remains a three-time Premier League winner full of the experience that Amorim desperately needs at the heart of his side.

Even though he has failed to break into his strongest side too, Guardiola has shared plenty of praise for Grealish – telling reporters following an impressive performance in the FA Cup against Leyton Orient: “Both wingers have been outstanding; Savinho and Jack were outstanding, they created chances.

“I’m pleased for Jack. Jack has the sense of the street, a player from the street. Most of the players, for our fault – the manager – are so academic. Jack is one of those players that came to fight in these stadiums when the people shout; he is a fighter.”

Everton set to cut ties with "outstanding" 93 career-goal ace in summer exit

Everton have plenty of work to do this summer as David Moyes shapes his squad and he now looks to have made a key decision involving one of his experienced stars, per a report.

Everton set for a summer of considerable change

While the Toffees’ emotional move away from Goodison Park has been the main story this term, it is easy to forget that Everton have an abnormal amount of players in the ranks with uncertain futures.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Seamus Coleman and Ashley Young lead a host of stars who are set to see their contracts expire, while several loanees could also depart, leaving David Moyes with an uphill task to ensure he has adequate depth come 2025/26.

Everton manager David Moyes

Making early inroads, Everton have lined up Leeds United full-back Junior Firpo on a free transfer. Despite the Friedkin Group’s financial muscle, inexpensive deals will still be needed to balance the books in line with PSR regulations.

After too long in the doldrums of relegation battles, the Toffees find themselves heading towards a new dawn brimming with optimism about what the future could hold. Nevertheless, this summer will balance ruthlessness against sentimentality, potentially breeding some emotional goodbyes involving first-team regulars over recent years.

Out of the stars mentioned, Calvert-Lewin feels like the most likely candidate to leave after a contract stand-off that has been a repeated point of contention among supporters. Now, the dominoes are starting to fall as Moyes wields the axe in a window that is set to provoke dramatic changes for all involved.

Everton set to cut ties with Ashley Young

According to Football Insider, Everton are set to part ways with veteran defender Ashley Young this summer due to Moyes’ decision that the 39-year-old isn’t going to be part of his plans at Bramley Moore. The former Manchester United man, who was labelled “outstanding” by Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa, has fallen out of favour as a starter at Goodison Park and now looks unlikely to be offered a new deal ahead of next season.

Notching an impressive total of 93 goals for club and country, Young has registered two strikes and four assists in 68 appearances for Everton since arriving on a free transfer in 2023. Providing adequate cover across both full-back positions, the ex-Three Lions international has turned out to be a savvy piece of business during a time where the club had to work under heavy financial constraints.

Unfortunately, it appears Young and Everton are now at the end of the road with each other and look set to shake hands before moving in their respective directions.

Manager open to immediate Tottenham talks after missing out on Man United

One manager appears very attracted by the prospect of a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur, after the tactician missed out on the Man United job to Ruben Amorim.

Tottenham's list of rumoured managerial targets

Ange Postecoglou could be facing his final few weeks as Spurs boss, according to some reports, as there is a growing belief the Australian could be sacked regardless of their success in Europe.

The Telegraph reported last week that Postecoglou is heading for the Spurs exit door, and it may not even tie in with their Europa League campaign, even if the Lilywhites do end up winning their first piece of major silverware since 2008.

Chairman Daniel Levy reportedly has numerous candidates under consideration to succeed Postecoglou, including Domestically, Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth), Marco Silva (Fulham), Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace), Thomas Frank (Brentford) and Scott Parker (Burnley), who have all been linked in the last few weeks.

Even Carlo Ancelotti, Jürgen Klopp and Xabi Alonso have been internally discussed as managerial options by Tottenham chiefs, according to GiveMeSport, but the trio may be very hard to tempt to N17, especially as Real Madrid are currently blocking an exit for their head coach.

Spurs may have to temper their expectations when it comes to high-profile coaches of Ancelotti’s ilk, but a readily-available head coach with Champions League and trophy-winning experience comes in the form of ex-Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzić.

The German left Dortmund after guiding them to an unexpected Champions League final last season, where they lost to Real Madrid, and won two major trophies during his time in the Bundesliga.

Terzic was mentioned as a potential target for Spurs back in January, and links have now resurfaced from his homeland.

Edin Terzić "would be immediately open to discussions" with Tottenham

It comes courtesy of newspaper Sport Bild, who report, via Sport Witness, that Terzic “would be immediately open to discussions” with Tottenham if the north Londoners come forward with an offer.

The 59-year-old rejected opportunities at Besiktas, West Ham and AC Milan in the last year, but was open to the Man United job before he ultimately watched Amorim take the reins at Old Trafford instead.

He’s now keen on a potential opening at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and he’s hungry to get back into management. Terzic is said to be taking advice from legendary ex-head coaches like Arsène Wenger in preparation for his next job, spending several weeks in Spain, Italy and England recently to watch as many top flight encounters as possible.

Déjà vu for Vijay Shankar as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka serve up another thrilling finish

Just like in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final in 2019-20, this Ranji Trophy fixture provided thrills and spills

Deivarayan Muthu12-Feb-2024Vijay Shankar is on his haunches after completing a hard-run double in Chennai’s stifling heat. His childhood friend – and batting partner – B Indrajith had also rushed across to the other end.Tamil Nadu’s chase of 355 is like Donkey Kong. The C,D, and E stands, which have been thrown open to the public, are filling fast on Monday afternoon at Chepauk. There is still about three weeks to go before MS Dhoni arrives for CSK’s preparatory camp, but the buzz among the crowd for a Ranji Trophy league game is discernible. With R Ashwin and Washington Sundar away on national duty, and Sai Sudharsan out with a niggle, Vijay is the most recognisable face in this Tamil Nadu side. Plus, he shares his name with one of the most popular Tamil actors. When Vijay had walked out of the dressing room after stumps on day three on Sunday, a section of fans began screaming: ” Vijay (brother), selfie please!”Related

Karnataka's Vyshak conjures reverse-swing to find Ranji success

is actor Vijay’s moniker, which means commander or leader.Vijay obliged the fans’ request with selfies and autographs along with Indrajith on Sunday evening. On Monday, Vijay and Indrajith thrilled the fans again, this time with a 125-run sixth-wicket partnership at a run rate of above four runs an over. They came together when Tamil Nadu were 199 for 5 with Karnataka pushing for victory on a fourth-day surface that was offering sharp turn as well as variable bounce. While Indrajith defended resolutely and protected one end, Vijay showed attacking enterprise and disrupted the lengths of Karnataka’s inexperienced spinners with sweeps and reverse sweeps.

Vijay isn’t too big on reverse sweeps, but he was ready to do something different on a turning track. After Tamil Nadu passed 300, there was a sense of panic in the opposition camp, with captain Mayank Agarwal, Manish Pandey and Devdutt Padikkal getting together for a mid-pitch conference.Agarwal then posted nine men on the boundary, including two at deep third and two at deep square leg. After Vijay and Indrajith had countered Karnataka’s spinners, the fast bowlers kept digging the ball into the pitch and hiding it away from the reach of the batters.Suddenly, a Ranji game had turned into a one-on-one shootout. After Indrajith was run-out for 98 off 194 balls by V Kaverappa off his own bowling, it was down to Vijay vs Vyshak Vijaykumar. Tamil Nadu needed 29 off the remaining 18 balls of the game, with the crowd right behind Vijay. Former India wicketkeeper and TN captain Dinesh Karthik was also in attendance at Chepauk towards the finish.Having packed the square boundaries on both sides, Vyshak’s plan was simple: keep it short, and take it away from the swinging arc of Vijay. Vyshak banged the ball into a hard length and darted it wide – it probably finished wider than a set of stumps outside off. Vijay managed to somehow reach the ball, but could only swipe it to Agarwal at the long-on boundary.Dismissed for 60 off 107, he was on his haunches once again before dragging himself off the field. In the next over, rookie S Lokeshwar holed out to long-off and Tamil Nadu ended up with a draw.Vijay Shankar obliged the fans at Chepauk with a selfie on the third day•Deivarayan Muthu/ESPNcricinfoIt was déjà vu for Vijay and Tamil Nadu once again. In the 2019-20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final in Surat, Vijay had played a sparkling cameo, but he fell at the final hurdle as Karnataka won by one run. With four needed from two balls in that game, Vijay was run-out while returning for a second, and it’s something that still haunts him.”I really wanted to cross the line today because four years ago in that T20… even in that innings I was there. I got the team very close but couldn’t cross the line,” Vijay said after stumps on Monday. “Today again, we came closer to it, and I think it’s one of the finest chases that you can see. Fourth-day wicket, over 350 to chase, and I think it was a fantastic effort.”You have to go all out for the team. Having come so close, you don’t want to just play it off. When I was there, I wanted to back myself to hit those couple of sixes, but it was not an easy wicket to get those sixes… Even you would have thought the match would get over by lunch or so .”Despite not securing an outright win in Chennai, Tamil Nadu are still in contention for qualifying for the Ranji Trophy knockouts. They still have one league fixture to go. “When we play well as a team and when we fight against all the odds – the wicket and everything – it gives good confidence for the team to keep moving forward and that’s a lovely thing to have amongst the group,” Vijay said.Indrajith, too, was upbeat about Tamil Nadu’s chances, and toasted the gripping finish. “The atmosphere was brilliant. First of all, to play a Ranji game at Chepauk is a special feeling,” he said. “When I made my Ranji debut in 2013-14, I saw crowds like these, but after a very long time I’m happy that people came to support both teams.”When I was batting, there was good support for Karnataka also. Usually, Tamil Nadu vs Karnataka is a high-octane game, and we didn’t expect it to go this close. When I was inside, I thought I can cross the line and it would have been a good feeling, but we will take it (the draw) any day.”Indrajith and the rest of the Tamil Nadu players then chilled with Karthik in front of the Madras Cricket Club as the sun set in Chennai. Usually, Chepauk is a cauldron of emotion in March, April and May, but February 12 was fun too.

Four games that defined the IPL's top four

Whether through luck or tactical ingenuity, Titans, LSG, RR and RCB have all had to overcome adversity to reach the playoffs

Karthik Krishnaswamy23-May-2022Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings, PuneBefore the season began, you probably wouldn’t have tipped Gujarat Titans to qualify for the playoffs, let alone get there as table-toppers. That they’ve achieved this despite having obvious holes in their batting has largely been down to three things: their strength as a bowling unit, the match-winners in their lower middle order, and luck going their way in a number of close games.Related

  • CSK and KKR review – A season of injury and instability

There’s been no shortage of dramatic games in their journey to this point, but their comeback win over Chennai Super Kings defined their season. It began with the bowlers. Super Kings were 124 for 2 after the 14th over, but Alzarri Joseph, Mohammed Shami, Yash Dayal and Rashid Khan conceded just 27 off the next five overs. It left Titans chasing 170 rather than, say, 190.Even so, Titans were still vulnerable because Hardik Pandya was out injured, compromising their depth to the extent that Rashid was slotted at No. 7. At 87 for 5 in the 13th over, that lack of depth was going to be severely tested, even with David Miller batting brilliantly. You know what happened next. The 18th over began with Titans needing 48 off 18 – ESPNcricinfo’s Forecaster gave them a 4.2% chance of victory – before Rashid whipped Chris Jordan for 6, 6, 4, 6 to transform the match. Cometh the hour, cometh another unlikely hero.R Ashwin brought out the big hits against Lucknow Super Giants, but didn’t overstay his welcome, opting to retire out in the 19th over•BCCIRajasthan Royals vs Lucknow Super Giants, Wankhede StadiumEven before a ball was bowled this season, Rajasthan Royals’ strengths and weaknesses were clear. Their top five and their bowling attack were among the best in the league on paper, but it wasn’t clear how they would bridge the gap between those two ends of their line-up.They unveiled the solution to that issue in their fourth match of the season, against Lucknow Super Giants. Reduced to 67 for 4 in the tenth over of their innings, Royals promoted R Ashwin to No. 6, giving viewers their first glimpse of their intention to maximise his batting ability. They would use him in other roles in future games – most often as a pinch-hitter at No. 3 – but now they were sending him in to see out the remainder of the middle overs in Shimron Hetmyer’s company, with Riyan Parag held back for later.Ashwin performed his role perfectly, but just when he threatened to overstay his welcome, his innings stretching into the 19th over, he ran off the field and became the first batter to tactically retire out in the IPL. With Hetmyer rushing to an unbeaten 59 off 36, Royals set Super Giants a target of 166.Royals’ bowlers then did their bit to seal an enthralling victory. Trent Boult picked up two wickets in his first over, Ashwin bowled four boundary-free overs, and Yuzvendra Chahal – whose last two overs were held back for the 16th and 18th of Super Giants’ chase – made the decisive intervention with figures of 4 for 41.Mohsin Khan has been instrumental in giving Super Giants crucial breakthroughs•BCCILucknow Super Giants vs Delhi Capitals, Wankhede StadiumThe flexibility afforded by a plethora of allrounders was tipped to be Super Giants’ trump card. As things have turned out, that flexibility has been a bit of a mixed blessing so far, at least with the bat, leaving Super Giants with an unsettled middle order. With the ball, though, the flexibility has allowed KL Rahul to use and hide bowlers as and when needed. This was particularly in evidence in a successful defence of 195 against Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium. With Mohsin Khan and Dushmantha Chameera dismissing the Capitals openers early, Rahul gambled by bringing Krunal Pandya on for the fourth over despite Rishabh Pant being at the crease. He may have hoped that Pant would treat the left-arm spinner with more respect than normal given the match situation, or for Pant to go after Krunal and lose his wicket in the process. The move backfired, however, with Pant hitting three fours and a six in a 19-run over. Capitals took 34 off the next two overs and ended the powerplay at 66 for 2.But Super Giants’ wealth of bowling options eventually helped them claw their way back. It allowed them to hide their fingerspinners, who weren’t having the greatest of days; Krunal bowled just that one over, and Krishnappa Gowtham – who was taken apart by Rovman Powell in the 12th over – only two. Then, with Capitals needing 50 off the last four, Super Giants were able to use up their main fast bowlers’ last three overs in the 17th, 18th and 19th, since they had Marcus Stoinis in reserve. It came down to 13 needed off four balls, and Stoinis did his job, stringing together three crucial, back-to-back dots by denying Axar Patel elevation.Dinesh Karthik slammed a 34-ball 66 to lift Royal Challengers Bangalore to 190 against Delhi Capitals•BCCIRoyal Challengers Bangalore vs Delhi Capitals, Wankhede StadiumRoyal Challengers Bangalore have been IPL 2022’s worst powerplay team. With the ball, they’ve been both the most expensive (economy rate of 8.05) and least penetrative (average of 45.13) team in this phase. With the bat, they have the lowest run rate (6.40) and the third-worst average (25.61). But they’ve found ways to make up for this, just about often enough to sneak into the playoffs.Perhaps the best example of Royal Challengers overcoming their powerplay weaknesses was their victory over Capitals, who were eventually their closest rivals for fourth place.Sent in, Royal Challengers lost both openers in a 40-run powerplay, and Virat Kohli two balls later, before crucial knocks from Glenn Maxwell (55 off 34 balls), Shahbaz Ahmed (32* off 21) and Dinesh Karthik (66* off 34) helped them recover and set a challenging target of 190.David Warner put Capitals on track, propelling them to a powerplay score of 57 for 1. But Harshal Patel, Wanindu Hasaranga, Maxwell and Shahbaz combined to give away just one boundary in the next four overs, and Capitals’ required rate climbed to 11.10 at the halfway mark.Forced into taking chances, Warner hit Harshal for two boundaries in the 11th over but fell while attempting to switch-hit Hasaranga in the 12th. It began a collapse that saw Capitals lose four wickets for 21 runs in the space of 22 balls, and Royal Challengers were now in control, with 75 required off the last 30 balls. Late hitting from Capitals’ lower order spoiled the figures of Harshal and Hasaranga, but the result was never in doubt.

Mariners Fans Were Irate After Rockies Intentionally Walk Cal Raleigh

Cal Raleigh is on the brink of greatness, but the Rockies aren't interested in helping him achieve it.

Raleigh hit his 60th home run of the season on Wednesday night, and now just needs two more to tie Aaron Judge for the American League record. He came up to the plate in a big spot during the Mariners' clash against Colorado on Thursday, but the Rockies chose to give him first base without even pitching to him, rather than risk letting him go yard.

Fans at Seattle's T-Mobile Park were fuming with the cowardly decision from the Rockies, and they let the team hear it as Raleigh took first base. Boos were cascading across the stadium from disgruntled fans who felt robbed of their chance to witness a piece of history.

Raleigh didn't look too thrilled either, remaining straight faced as he walked to first base.

Colorado was already trailing 5–0 at the time, and they weren't willing to let Raleigh make it an 8–0 game with one thunderous swing of the bat.

If the superstar catcher isn't able to leave the yard on Thursday, he'll only have three more chances to catch Judge's home run record. Seattle is hosting the Dodgers for a season-concluding three-game series starting on Friday.

Brewers Pull Jackson Chourio From Game 1 vs. Cubs With Apparent Injury

The Brewers loudly announced their arrival to the National League Division Series Saturday, jumping out to a 9–1 lead on their division rivals, the Cubs.

However, it came at a price. Milwaukee left fielder Jackson Chourio exited the game with an apparent injury beating out an infield single.

The apparent injury ended a spectacular—albeit short—day for the Venezuela native. Chourio went 3-for-3, driving in three runs and scoring one. That performance came on the heels of a terrific showing in last year's NL wild-card series; he slashed .455/.500/1.000 with two home runs and three RBIs against the Mets.

In 2025, Chourio landed unsettlingly close to his 2024 numbers—he slashed .270/.308/.463 a year after slashing .275/.327/.464; he hit 21 home runs again and fell one short of his '24 RBI total. However, he missed 31 games this year, with a hamstring injury costing him almost all of August.

The Brewers said that Chourio left the game with right hamstring tightness and will continue to be evaluated, according to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. Game 2 is scheduled for Monday in prime time in Milwaukee.

MLB World Reacts to Yankees' Shocking Release of DJ LeMahieu

After deciding to send infielder DJ LeMahieu to the bench earlier this week, the New York Yankees announced on Wednesday that they have designated him for assignment. The shocking move puts an end to his seven-season tenure in the Bronx.

LeMahieu responded "O.K." to the news, according to manager Aaron Boone—who also noted that the 36-year-old did not ask for his release. A three-time All-Star, he had been slashing .266/.338/.336 with two home runs and 12 RBIs this season. A logjam in the infield, however, seemingly forced New York's hand.

Given that LeMahieu has been a staple in this era of Yankee baseball, the MLB was understandably stunned by the news. Here's a look at some of the reactions that came in across social media:

LeMahieu signed a six-year extension with New York in 2021 and is still owed $22 million through next season.
