'It can be tough to do both skills full out' but Kapp will do it for South Africa

With a limited time left in the game, Marizanne Kapp is focusing on how much she can still do and not how much she shouldn’t

Firdose Moonda03-Oct-2024If you, like me, have wondered what the point of women playing one-off Tests – often with no red-ball domestic structure to help them prepare – is, Marizanne Kapp has the answer.”That 150 against England, when we were in so much trouble, changed the way I approached batting,” she told ESPNcricinfo. “Just prior to that, I started working a lot with [former New Zealand men’s international] Kruger van Wyk, who is our fielding coach. We just worked on a few mental things and upped my game. I used to be someone that had to hit and bowl a million balls before games and I really worked hard to taper down on that so that by match day I am not so fatigued. I’ve also really worked on just being a little bit more aggressive and if it’s in my area going after the bowlers.”The match Kapp is referring to took place in June 2022 in Taunton and was South Africa’s first Test in more than seven years. They were put in to bat and found themselves 47 for 4 when Kapp got to the crease. She batted for most of the rest of innings – four hours and 26 minutes in total – and faced 213 balls for her 150, and then everything changed.Related

In 20 ODIs after that knock, Kapp scored a staggering 836 runs at an average of 59.71 (compared to a career-average of 34.33) including two of her three hundreds. In 23 T20Is, she scored 486 runs at 27.00 (up from an overall average of 20.98), improved her strike rate from 103.58 to 130.99 and decreased her balls-per-boundary rate to 5.62 from 11.73 in the three years prior to that. That means Kapp has gone from scoring a boundary every two overs, to one every over, which in the shortest format makes a massive difference, and proves she has joined the women’s power-hitting revolution. “I’ve really started to back myself in hitting the ball, whether it’s my first three balls or whether I’ve faced 30 balls,” she said. “These days you have to adapt, be more aggressive, and keep on working on your game. I feel like in T20 cricket or even in ODI cricket if you look, the girls are starting to reach scores of 280, 300 and above. It’s not the same as years ago where you [could] just take your time.”Kapp’s own role is also not the same as it was a few years ago, where she slotted into South Africa’s middle order after the likes of Lizelle Lee, Dane van Niekerk and Mignon du Preez. All three are now retired, which presented South Africa with the opportunity to play Kapp up the order at No. 3, where she has been since January last year. And that wasn’t the first time she found herself in such a key batting position. She was initially put there in 2017 by Surrey Stars in the Women’s Super League in England. Kapp was the competition’s fourth-highest run-scorer, behind Rachel Priest, Suzie Bates and Ellyse Perry, and later had some games in the same position in the WBBL and WPL.”I’m a big believer in the leagues even though it takes so much out of me. I feel like the leagues are probably the reason that I’ve really started to put in big performances in international cricket,” Kapp said. “The leagues bring a different level of competitiveness. You bowl and bat in different areas in a game in these leagues. You get used to playing in semi-finals and finals with massive crowds. I’ve learned how to finish games in leagues. If you look at our international schedule, even if you play all the games, how many times will you find yourself in a situation where you have to finish off a game? It doesn’t always work out that way. In the leagues, I’ve been in that situation a lot.”

“I take most of my wickets in the powerplay and we need me to strike and almost protect those younger bowlers a little bit more, so that they can come in after the powerplay, where they can have their four fielders and bowl to their plans”Marizanne Kapp

Though Kapp is an advocate of prioritising leagues in the schedule, like most cricketers she still thinks there is “nothing better than playing for your country and playing in World Cups”, especially as South Africa continue to improve.Last year, they reached a final for the first time even though “we probably didn’t play our best cricket” but “managed to rock up on the day of the semi-final and performed”.This year, there’s expectation growing at home that they can go one better, even though they are without a key member of their last squad, Shabnim Ismail, who has retired. Without her, South Africa have lost significant bowling experience and quality and Kapp, once again, finds herself in a position of increased responsibility.Along with her higher batting role, she also expects to continue opening the bowling. “I still believe I have a massive role to play with the ball. Experience is something you can’t buy and we saw that with Shabnim leaving, it leaves a big hole in our bowling line-up,” Kapp said. “Our bowling line-up has always been world-class but we’ve had a few changes. I take most of my wickets in the powerplay and we need me to strike and almost protect those younger bowlers a little bit more, so that they can come in after the powerplay, where they can have their four fielders and bowl to their plans.”Kapp’s understanding of her new-ball job is spot on. Since the start of 2023, she has taken 70% of her total wickets in the first six overs – 48 at an average of 16.31 – and it is also where she is most difficult to get away. She goes at 5.36 runs per over in the powerplay, and 7.94 from overs seven to 20. Her ability to find swing upfront continues to make her a big threat and in T20s, she is open to bowling her full complement of overs early. “If it’s going well and it’s my day, we’ve been letting me bowl three or even four overs sometimes. If you can get one of those big sides on the back foot, you’re halfway there.””It just took me one or two knocks against the big sides and my confidence just doubled”•BCCIBut that doesn’t mean Kapp hasn’t taken stock of what she’s putting herself through. “If you have to look at allrounders at the moment, your big allrounders all over the world, none of them really still opens the bowling and bats top order like what I’m doing currently,” she said. “So even if I was younger, it’s a big ask and a tough ask in international cricket.”Especially for someone like her, who has also had health struggles. Kapp had Covid-19 four times and has also missed matches with other illnesses. She thinks some of it is down to her diet as a vegetarian, but has seen improvement since the team added a doctor to the permanent support staff.”We’ve had the doctor for quite a while and she’s been guiding me and helping me and making sure that my food is sorted,” Kapp said. “I’m getting older and my body is getting older in the sense that if you look at the amount of cricket I play, for example. This is going to be my tenth year of Big Bash and it can be tough to do both skills full out.”It can also be rewarding and with a limited time left in the game – Kapp is thought to be eyeing next year’s 50-over World Cup as a swansong of sorts – she’s focusing on how much she can still do and not how much she shouldn’t. “It just took me one or two knocks against the big sides and my confidence just doubled. Now, I believe I can do it as a batter as well, not only as a bowler.”

RP Singh or Yuvraj, Malinga or Herath – vote for the greatest T20 World Cup performance

Two defining performances in India’s 2007 triumph, and two five-fors from Sri Lankan legends

India were defending 153 in a must-win contest to make the semi-finals, and RP Singh’s sensational effort ensured it was more than enough. He made the perfect start, trapping Herschelle Gibbs lbw with an inswinger, and two balls later induced an edge from Graeme Smith that was taken by Dinesh Karthik in the slips. In his third over, a vicious yorker – arguably the ball of the tournament – swung into Shaun Pollock’s leg stump. South Africa could have made the semi-finals if they got to 126, but RP Singh ended those hopes by bowling Albie Morkel.70 (30) vs AUS | Yuvraj Singh | Durban, 2007
India’s young side had made a slow start in the T20 World Cup semi-final and were 41 for 2 at the end of the eighth over. Yuvraj Singh began with a swivel-pull against Stuart Clark – one of the best bowlers of the tournament – for six off the second ball he faced, and smashed a 119-metre pick-up shot off Brett Lee in the next over. His entire innings was like a highlights reel: the 70 off 30 balls included five sixes and as many fours, and he almost single-handedly took India to a match-winning 188.ESPNcricinfo LtdLasith Malinga’s 5-31 vs Rangana Herath’s 5-35-31 vs ENG | Lasith Malinga | Pallekele, 2012

Luke Wright, Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales were all dismissed in the third over of the chase, and Jos Buttler and Samit Patel were accounted for later. This was far from peak Malinga – he did not hit his yorkers as reliably as he generally did – but the sight of a fantastic fast bowler causing havoc was a sight to behold.5-3 vs NZ | Rangana Herath | Chattogram, 2014
Sri Lanka’s rousing T20 World Cup triumph may have never happened but for a spell of wizardry in the final Group 1 match. Chasing 120 under lights – with evening dew around – New Zealand were mugged by one of the great T20 spells. Rangana Herath wove a web of deception with his subtle skills. The coffee wars are going to create latte problems for Australia

Trouble is brewing and the strongest shall win

Alan Gardner14-Sep-2020You may well have heard of the ongoing “culture wars” dividing modern society (basically just a glorified term for the actions of certain men who want to play computer games without being told to tidy their rooms) – but news has reached the Light Roller this month of a far more serious rift. The normally carefree troupe of globetrotting hipsters known as the Australia cricket team has split into rival factions based around their preferences for coffee.Clearly, dealing with life in the biosecure bubble while on their tour of England has taken a toll. Discussing the situation in an emotional, socially distanced interview, Kane Richardson spilled the beans (organic, hand-picked) on the group’s descent into caffeine-fuelled nihilism, hitting out at diminutive legspinner and haircut wearer Adam Zampa for being a “coffee snob” who had never extended him an invite to the famous Love Café.(As watchers of will know, the Love Café was founded in response to the crisis that engulfed Australian cricket following the 2018 sandpaper affair. Zampa and Marcus Stoinis are the designated “rare units” who front the operation, with the goal of fostering a more caring, sharing environment within the national team. There is also an aim to teach Stoinis how to play legspin but they haven’t got round to that part yet.)Richardson revealed that he has taken to patronising the newly established outlet of batsman-barista David Warner, adding warmly that “to me it all tastes the same”. Marnus Labuschagne has also tried to claim a slice of the market with what connoisseurs describe as a homespun brew that looks a bit funny but gets the job done – though given he is only open for business when not batting in the nets (or throwing for Steven Smith in the nets), success is believed to have been limited.Furthermore, rumours that Smith was considering switching to coffee from tea, in a move that could help unite the warring parties, have been dismissed by well-placed sources who point out that he could never betray his preference for exotic leaves. While captain Aaron Finch has so far managed to maintain appearances of elite mateship, mainly by overseeing a series of team-bonding latte art sessions, there are fears more serious cultural issues may once again be percolating through the Australian system. Dressing-room feuds such Warne v Waugh or Katich v Clarke are nothing new, but the emergence of this latest beef/vegan-friendly meat substitute could tear the squad apart. What might be the consequences, for instance, of Pat Cummins starting up a cold brew movement, or Glenn Maxwell experimenting with kombucha?Remember, as the old saying goes, a team is only as strong as its weakest pot of vacuum-brewed single-origin fair-trade Sumatran.

Australia’s old guard, meanwhile, continue to cherish their status as unappointed moral arbiters of the sport, diligently policing “the line” wherever they go. Ricky Ponting has been quite clear about which line he doesn’t want R Ashwin to cross during the IPL – that is the notional, “spirit of cricket” perimeter beyond which lies the lawless world of running out a non-striker for backing up (NB: completely the Laws). However, it seems after a chat with Ashwin, he has now noticed the actual, physical white line that non-strikers keep sauntering past, too. “I think something has to happen with the laws of the game to make sure batsmen can’t cheat,” said a perplexed Ponting. Quite right, too, Ricky. But what possible solution could there be?

From the IPL to the Svenska Cricketförbundet – quite literally, in the case of Jonty Rhodes, who will head for Scandinavia after the completion of his stint with Kings XI Punjab in the UAE. Tempting as it is to make the joke that Sweden is one of the few places whiter than South African cricket, Rhodes has spoken openly in support of transformation and his own experience of privilege growing up – and we wish him great success in helping to establish the game in what looks to be an inhospitable foreign clime. Here’s hoping he is able to assemble a capable team quicker than you can say ubiquitous flat-pack furniture manufacturer and is back at an ICC event in the very near future, leading a bunch of tall, chiselled Nordic types who are all absolute guns in the field. Just don’t ask questions about how they will handle the knockout rounds.

Blue Jays' Eric Lauer Joked About Reason for Pitching With a Fat Lip

Toronto Blue Jays lefthander Eric Lauer continued his breakout campaign, pitching eight innings of one-run ball to help power his club to an 11-4 win over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday.

And he did it while pitching with a fat lip.

Naturally, reporters wanted to know Lauer had a fat lip. The Blue Jays southpaw, tongue-in-cheek, had the perfect explanation after the game.

"So, there's kind of this known thing to not mess with [Max] Scherzer on his start days," Lauer said. "Especially when he has his headphones in. And I broke that rule. I tried to talk to him a little too early. So, he wasn't very happy about that. And six stitches is what you get for that."

Well played by Lauer. Not only did he absolutely nail the joke delivery with a straight face, but he couldn't have picked better subject matter as explanation for the souvenir on his face. Scherzer, a future Hall of Famer, is known as much for his intensity on and off the mound as he is for his pitching prowess, so much so that one former Texas Rangers teammate didn't dare invade his landing space before a postseason start in the fall of 2023.

Scherzer has enough of a reputation as a pregame grump that one would almost be led to believe that this is the reason for Lauer's fat lip. Alas, Lauer declined to elaborate anymore on the condition of his face.

When a club is rolling and the vibes are good, these are the kinds of things one can expect to emerge from the clubhouse. And the vibes are definitely good in Toronto.

Man Utd express interest in signing South American striker who tore PSG apart

Manchester United have now expressed in signing an “outrageous” striker, who’s been “on fire” this season, scoring a brace against Paris Saint-Germain.

Man Utd keen on new striker amid doubts over Zirkzee

Joshua Zirkzee may have scored his first Premier League goal of the season in the 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace at the end of November, but the striker’s goalscoring record since arriving at Old Trafford leaves a lot to be desired.

Despite the Dutchman’s struggles in front of goal, Ruben Amorim wants to keep hold of him, as he values the forward’s versatility, but the manager is at odds with the club, who are open to sanctioning a January departure for a fee of around £35m.

Aston Villa are named as potential suitors for Zirkzee, alongside a whole host of other clubs from England and Italy, meaning United will have a decision to make in the January transfer window.

Should the Netherlands international move on, Amorim may want to bring in a replacement, considering Benjamin Sesko wasn’t exactly tearing up the Premier League prior to his recent injury, scoring two goals in 11 games.

According to a report from Caught Offside, Man United have now expressed an interest in a striker who has been much more prolific in front of goal this season, namely RC Strasbourg star Joaquin Panichelli.

The race for Panichelli’s signature is heating up, with Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Aston Villa also being credited with an interest, but Chelsea are currently in pole position, given that Strasbourg are a part of BlueCo.

That relationship gives the Blues an advantage in the race for the centre-forward, who has put in some top-quality performances since his arrival at Strasbourg in the summer…

"Outrageous" Panichelli "on fire" in Ligue 1

Scout Jacek Kulig has hailed the Argentinian for the impact he’s made in France, having only arrived from Spanish side CD Mirandes during the summer.

The South American is now on ten goals in 19 matches in all competitions, with perhaps his best performance coming in Strasbourg’s 3-3 draw against PSG back in October, during which he bagged a brace.

Amorim's priority target: Man Utd step up interest in "special" Madrid star

Man United are now in the race for a “special” player

ByDominic Lund 6 days ago

Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior may be reluctant to part ways with the 23-year-old, given just how highly he spoke about his talisman earlier this season, saying: “He is a top player, we’ve done quite a bit of work with him during the pre-season to try to make him run less.”

The French club are under no immediate pressure to cash-in, with Panichelli contracted until 2030, but it could be worth Man United testing the waters with an offer, considering Zirkzee’s struggles.

Gracia 2.0: 49ers set to explore hiring 3-4-2-1 Farke replacement at Leeds

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke is facing a potentially defining week in his career at the club ahead of Premier League clashes with Chelsea and Liverpool at Elland Road.

The Guardian reported on Monday that Farke’s job may be on the line in these next two matches, because senior figures at the club believe that two losses could lead to his dismissal.

It added that his position in West Yorkshire could be ‘untenable’ if he does not pick up at least one point, as the report states that his job hangs ‘in the balance’.

The Guardian, though, also revealed that some sources have expressed sympathy for the German manager because the results have not been as positive as the performances have been.

Leeds exploring move for English head coach

Whilst a final decision has not been made on the former Norwich City head coach’s future at the club, a fresh report has named one of the managers already in the frame to take his place.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

According to Football Insider, Leeds United are exploring the possibility of a move to appoint former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O’Neil as Farke’s replacement at Elland Road.

The report claims that the English tactician is ‘firmly’ in the running to be the next Whites manager if they decide to part ways with the German this week.

It adds that Farke will be in the dugout for the clash with Chelsea on Wednesday night, as the earlier report from The Guardian backs up, but his future beyond these next two games remains in doubt.

However, the 49ers should change their mind and avoid a deal to appoint O’Neil as their next manager if they opt to move on from Farke, because he could be a Javi Gracia repeat for the club.

Why Gary O'Neil could be a Javi Gracia repeat for Leeds

The Whites appointed Gracia to replace Jesse Marsch in February 2022 in an attempt to avoid relegation from the Premier League, and it seemed to be a shrewd move on paper.

Prior to joining Leeds, the Spaniard had finished 14th and 11th in the Premier League with Watford in his first two seasons with the Hornets, per Transfermarkt, before losing his job after three defeats in four games at the start of his third campaign.

He, therefore, arrived as a ‘proven’ Premier League manager, but that did not stop him from losing six of his 11 games in charge before being sacked by the Whites, who then brought in Sam Allardyce.

O’Neil would arrive at Elland Road with a similar reputation because he finished 15th and 14th with Bournemouth and Wolves in his first two seasons in the division, before being sacked after a run of 11 losses in 16 games in his third top-flight campaign, per Transfermarkt.

The English boss, who typically deploys a 3-4-2-1 formation, per Transfermarkt, lost his job with the Old Gold for a run of form that was even worse than Farke’s current performance at Leeds.

As you can see in the table above, Farke would still have a better record than O’Neil did last season if he loses these next two games against Chelsea and Liverpool.

These statistics suggest that there is no guarantee that the ex-Wolves manager would be an upgrade on the German in the dugout, as Gracia wasn’t, despite his Premier League experience, when they sacked Marsch in 2022.

With this in mind, the 49ers should avoid moving for the out-of-work head coach if they decide to sack Farke, because it could be a repeat of the mistake that former sporting director Victor Orta once made with Gracia.

Instead, they should look to appoint a manager who is a clear upgrade on the German boss, whether they have Premier League experience or not, to help them in their battle against relegation.

Leeds lining up January spending spree for "phenomenal" Farke replacement

Daniel Farke will reportedly be sacked if Leeds lose their next two matches.

ByBen Goodwin Dec 1, 2025

Of course, it would be remiss of us to ignore the possibility that Farke can turn things around in these next two games to save his job, which would alleviate any need for the board to step in and make a decision on a replacement for him in the coming weeks.

Marlins Notch First Walk-Off Win of 2025 MLB Season As Kyle Stowers Plays Hero

The 2025 MLB season has its first walk-off, courtesy of the Miami Marlins.

On Opening Day, the Marlins defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 on a game-winning single to right field off of the bat of outfielder Kyle Stowers at loanDepot park on Thursday. Facing 2024 National League Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes, Miami scratched a run across the board in the bottom of the third inning, but didn't plate another off the ace right-hander until the sixth frame.

Then, with Skenes out of the game and trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the 8th inning, the Marlins mounted a rally against the Pirates bullpen. And Stowers, who worked a leadoff walk, then came around to score on an RBI single by second baseman Otto Lopez before right fielder Dane Myers tied the game with another base hit.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, a leadoff triple from catcher Nick Fortes started the rally, and Stowers, after Pirates closer David Bednar intentionally walked shortstop Xavier Edwards, won the game with a single to right.

The game pitted a budding ace in Skenes against '22 NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara, and the two pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts, though neither pitched longer than 5 1/3 innings. The two clubs will take to the diamond again for the second game in the series on Friday at 7:10 p.m. ET.

114 touches, 100% tackles: 8/10 Liverpool star is as undroppable as Ekitike

Crisis over? Not quite yet. Sure, Liverpool put five past woeful Eintracht Frankfurt to get their Champions League campaign back on track, but fans will now expect a continuation of that performance carried into the weekend.

Liverpool travel to Brentford on Saturday evening, having lost three on the bounce in the Premier League. Last week’s Anfield defeat at the hands of Manchester United was a low ebb, and Arne Slot will no doubt have been chagrinned by this polarising level of performance.

Last season, of course, the Reds romped their way to the Premier League title. Few, if any, anticipated a title battle after Jurgen Klopp up and left, but this football club has a funny way of disproving doubt, and the charge was ultimately processional.

Frankly, Frankfurt were shocking defensively, inviting 18 shots and 14 on target. Liverpool amassed an xG (expected goals) total of 3.26.

The club-record signing, Alexander Isak, might have been withdrawn at half-time, having still not hit his stride after that contentious summer move, but Hugo Ekitike continues to show why he has been one of the signings of the season – and that’s accounting for all teams across Europe.

Hugo Ekitike's prolific start to the season

Ekitike, 23, joined Liverpool from Frankfurt this summer, choosing the Reds over Newcastle United. An initial fee of £69m was chequed over to the Germans, with a further £10m payable through add-ons.

Liverpool have been freighted with tactical imbalances and new crises of confidence, but Ekitike has been cool and calm and clinical in the final third, with his well-taken strike against his former club, respectably not celebrating, taking his tally to six goals and one assist this year.

As per Sofascore, the France international also won five of seven contested duels at the Deutsche Bank Park, emphasising a wider level of quality. Not just a sharpshooter, he links up play, fights for loose balls, drops deep and carves openings for teammates. Ekitike is the real deal.

As content creator Asim Mahmood puts it, “Right now, he’s undroppable.”

Right you are, Asim. But Ekitike isn’t the only one, with one of the club’s longest-serving stars proving he’s still got a few tricks up his sleeve.

Liverpool veteran is now as undroppable as Ekitike

In his post-match interview, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk baulked at the suggestion he was relieved after turning around this tough run of losses. He has, after all, been in this game a long time.

And so has Andy Robertson, who for many years ran up Liverpool’s left line as a turbo-charged creative force, whipping in crosses and beating his man with blistering speed and neat dribbling.

Robertson has known criticism, these past 14 months or so. The 31-year-old no longer brings such energy and snap to his game, and has been somewhat remodelled into a less mobile full-back. His technical quality remains, though.

And against Frankfurt, this was on full show. You will have seen Ekitike’s opening goal, the deftness and composure to angle inward when played through and dispatch into the net. It was Robertson, though, who saw the opening and played a weighted pass through.

This is what he brings to the table. Sofascore also record that the Scotsman took 114 touches, attempting five crosses, making five ball recoveries, winning his one attempted tackle and making three interceptions.

Die Roten fell apart, and tougher tests will come for Slot’s side, but Robertson brings the balance, and it may well be that he has proved he is every bit as undroppable as Ekitike right now.

Milos Kerkez, of course, would have something to say about that, but Kerkez has flattered to deceive at Liverpool so far this season, and he does not look at home in the boss’s tactical system.

While the 21-year-old joined from Bournemouth for £45m and was named in the Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25, he has not yet found his feet on Merseyside, where the spotlight shines much brighter and the calendar is more unforgiving.

He simply isn’t quite right – yet. Robertson started his first game in a month this week, and he must now retain his role. Less pacy he may be, the £160k-per-week veteran is one of the most distinguished creators in the Premier League, with his assist tally in the competition a testament to that.

The problem with Kerkez is that he’s not a natural ball technician. That is to say, to move him into a principally ball-playing role would be an erroneous move.

Correspondent David Lynch noted he is perceived to be “getting torn to shreds every week”, but that this isn’t actually the case, with the Hungarian simply misused across these opening months of the term.

Kerkez is more of a touchline full-back. He has pace and power and incisiveness, and these are faculties sure to work in his favour down the line.

But we are not yet down the line. Liverpool are at the beginning of a transition, and Slot, for all his brilliance, has yet to crack the wider tactical nut.

Wednesday’s win was a step in the right direction, but Robertson dangled among the bunch of keys to victory; he added balance and coherence and stability down Liverpool’s left side.

The vice-captain simply “has to be in the line-up at Brentford”, according to The Athletic’s James Pearce, and this is a sentiment many would share after the events of recent weeks.

If Liverpool fail to pass the Gtech test – a stadium they have won at twice in a row – questions will be thrown back at Slot’s presser table. If the elusive synergy is to be captured and contained within Liverpool’s tactical make-up, players like Robertson and Ekitike have to reprise their starting roles.

Wolves rejected by up and coming manager as Fosun forced to look elsewhere

Inigo Perez, who currently manages La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, is the latest name “under consideration” by Wolverhampton Wanderers to fill their current vacancy in the dugout.

After picking up just two points from an available 30 in their opening 10 Premier League games, Vitor Pereira was dismissed from his post as manager. Wolves have determined who will take interim charge of the club against Chelsea on Saturday, but will no doubt hope for a swift appointment as James Collins took press conference duties on Friday.

Unsurprisingly, a number of managers have been linked with Wolves and it will take a gargantuan effort to lift the Old Gold out of their current slump. Middlesbrough manager Rob Edwards appears to be their preferred choice, although Boro are hesitant to let go of the head coach who, hired last summer, has made a strong start at the Riverside Stadium.

Reports from Spain, however, have indicated that Wolves were looking to options from abroad to replace Pereira.

Wolves keen on Perez of Rayo Vallecano

Radio Marca, as per Sport Witness, have stated that Inigo Perez has “received calls from Wolves” about becoming their next manager. A former midfielder, Perez spent a season as Rayo Vallecano’s assistant manager under Andoni Iraola, who is now doing brilliant things with Bournemouth.

Returning to the club in 2024 as manager, Perez guided Vallecano to Conference League football through their eighth-placed finish in La Liga last season. The club are unbeaten in Europe after three matches and with 11 league games played, are 10th in the table.

Perez has since acknowledged that he understands comparisons between Iraola, himself and the way their teams play, a brand of football that is clearly effective.

Interest in Perez is understandable, though Diario de Navarra, once again as per Sport Witness, have claimed that Perez “wants to stay at Rayo Vallecano until the end of this season.” As such, he has “rejected the offers” he has received from Wolves and other interested parties.

It feels imperative that Wolves, who are still without a league win this season, soon find a replacement for Pereira, given the predicament they find themselves in. Perez, however, will seemingly not be that man.

If Perez continues to impress as he has done during his reign so far, then he may soon follow Iraola to the Premier League. It would appear that, for now, Wolves will have to turn to an alternative target.
