How the teams stack up – II

Siddhartha Vaidyanathan11-Mar-2008The second round of IPL auctions are done with and it’s time once again to
look at how the franchises have built their teams for the 44-day tournament.

Misbah-ul-Haq provides the X-factor to the Bangalore Royal Challengers

Tuesday’s show wasn’t as high-profile but was as important for a few franchises. Some, like Hyderabad, had already settled their squads while others like Jaipur had plenty of money left to spend. Others still, like Kolkata and Jaipur, may have ended up with too many overseas signings while Bangalore and Mumbai used the second opportunity to plug the gaps.Like we did after the first auction, we run the
rule over the eight sides.

Bangalore

Bangalore have a far more balanced look after the second auction. Just when the batting order appeared too conventional for Twenty20, they poached Misbah-ul-Haq, someone who will add
the X-factor. Shreevats Goswami, the Under-19 player acquired on Tuesday, will be the second-choice wicketkeeper. With a bowling attack that’s one of the best in the tournament, Bangalore look a far more flexible unit.Probable XI: 1 Bharat Chipli, 2 J Arunkumar, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Jacques
Kallis/Misbah-ul-Haq 5 Virat Kohli, 6 Cameron White, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8
Zaheer Khan, 9 Anil Kumble, 10 Nathan Bracken, 11 Dale Steyn/Vinay Kumar.

Chennai

It was a quiet day for Chennai, having bought most of their players in the
first auction. It’s a squad with a fine balance of local and foreign
talent and plenty of options in both batting and bowling. It’s a side with
quality fast bowlers, handy medium-pacers, fine spinners, big hitters, and
accumulators. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the captain, couldn’t have asked for
more.Probable XI 1 Matthew Hayden, 2 Stephen Fleming/ Abhinav Mukund, 3
Suresh Raina, 4 Jacob Oram, 5 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Michael
Hussey/S Badrinath, 7 Albie Morkel/Parthiv Patel, 8 Joginder Sharma, 9
Napoleon Einstein, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan/ Makhaya Ntini, 11 Sudeep
Tyagi/R Ashwin.

Delhi

A balanced side with an outstanding fielding unit, it also has enough
local talent to give it good shape. The pace department is
impressive but Delhi may still be pondering about spin.
Daniel Vettori continues to be the lone specialist spin option, with
Virender Sehwag backing up. Overall a side that looks like serious
contenders.Probable XI 1 Virender Sehwag (capt), 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 Shikhar Dhawan, 4
AB de Villiers/Shoaib Malik/Tillakaratne Dilshan, 5 Rajat Bhatia, 6 Manoj
Tiwary, 7 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 8 Daniel Vettori, 9 Farveez Maharoof/Yo
Mahesh, 10 Mohammad Asif, 11 Glenn McGrath.

Hyderabad

No need for the second auction here. The franchise spent most of their money the first time and quickly went about signing others from the catchment areas. It’s a power-packed side with a fine mix of local and foreign players. Hyderabad are making the least noise among all the franchises but don’t be surprised if you see them on top of the podium.Probable XI: 1 Adam Gilchrist (wk), 2 DB Ravi Teja, 3 VVS Laxman (capt), 4 Arjun Yadav, 5 Andrew Symonds/Herschelle Gibbs, 6 Venugopal Rao/ Rohit Sharma, 7 Scott Styris/Shahid Afridi/Chamara Silva, 8 Pragyan Ojha, 9 Chaminda Vaas/Nuwan Zoysa, 10 RP Singh, 11 D Kalyankrishna.

Jaipur

They’ve no doubt gained the most from the second auction but are still too reliant on foreign talent. Shane Warne has plenty of options in the squad but he’s allowed only four foreign players – a fact which will restrict the selection of the side. DImitri Mascarenhas, Morne Morkel and Sohail Tanvir are wonderful additions but all might struggle to get picked regularly.Probable XI: 1 Taruwar Kohli, 2 Graeme Smith, 3 Yusuf Pathan,
4 Mohammad Kaif, 5 Anup Revendkar, 6 Kamran Akmal (wk), 7 Shane Watson, 8
Ravindra Jadeja, 9 Shane Warne (capt) 10 Pankaj Singh, 11 Munaf Patel.

Kolkata

Sourav Ganguly is the only high-profile Indian in the batting line-up. With only four foreign players allowed in the playing XI, it leaves them with a brittle middle order. Their only purchases on Tuesday were Iqbal Abdulla and Siddharth Kaul, both bowlers. It means the likes of Laxmi Ratan Shukla and other local players would need to fill the void in the middle.Probable XI 1 Sourav Ganguly (capt), 2 Chris Gayle, 3 Brendon McCullum (wk),
4 Ricky Ponting, 5 Laxmi Ratan Shukla, 6 Ajit Agarkar, 7 Murali Kartik, 8
Iqbal Abdulla/Saurasish Lahiri, 9 Shoaib Akhtar/Umar Gul, 10 Ishant
Sharma, 11 Siddharth Kaul.

Mohali

A good second auction but the batting still looks thin on paper.
Most of the options are foreign recruits and Yuvraj Singh might struggle to put a
balanced XI in place. Ajitesh Argal and Tanmay Srivatsava, though, could
be fine picks in the long run, with both players touted as future
international stars. The bowling line-up has a fine mix – well represented
in both pace and spin.Probable XI 1 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 2 Irfan Pathan, 3 Tanmay
Srivastava, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Mahela Jayawardene/ Ramnaresh Sarwan/ Simon
Katich, 6 James Hopes, 7 Piyush Chawla, 8 Ramesh Powar, 9 Brett Lee, 10
Ajitesh Argal, 11 Sreesanth.

Mumbai

Mumbai have a more settled unit now with Manish Pandey and Saurabh Tiwary
beefing up the batting order. The only team without a foreign wicketkeeper
[Delhi have AB de Villiers as a back-up option to Dinesh Karthik], Mumbai
will rely on Pinal Shah from Baroda and Maharashtra’s Yogesh Takawale. Expect fireworks from the top order:
Ajinkya Rahane and Robin Uthappa following the two masters, Sachin
Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya.Probable XI: 1 Sachin Tendulkar (capt), 2 Sanath Jayasuriya, 3 Ajinkya Rahane, 4 Robin
Uthappa, 5 Manish Pandey, 6 Sourabh Tiwary, 7 Shaun Pollock, 8 Pinal Shah
(wk), 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10, Lasith Malinga, 11 Dilhara Fernando.

The 29th edition of the MLS All-Star Game arrives Wednesday night. Top MLS players will host the Liga MX All-Stars at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas.

Dating back to 1996, the ASG has showcased the best players in the league – and some of the world's best – in multiple formats, ranging from intra-league matches to games against European powerhouses such as Chelsea, Manchester United and Bayern Munich. Who have been the best from MLS to play in the summer series?

From superstars such as David Beckham and Thierry Henry to stalwarts such as Darlington Nagbe and Chad Marshall, GOAL looks at the MLS All-Star All-Time XI.

    Goalkeeper

Matt Turner: Although Turner only played in one ASG, it was more than memorable for the now-established U.S. international. In the 2021 game, Turner came on in the 60th minute and kept a clean sheet in regulation, sending the match to a penalty shootout.

Turner came up huge, saving attempts from both Rogelio Funes Mori and Salvador Reyes, while watching Erik Lira's penalty launch over the bar as the MLS All-Stars won 3-2 in the shootout. He was named MVP and made MLS history.

    Defenders

Walker Zimmerman: Zimmerman, one of two active players on this list, has been one of the most consistent defenders MLS has ever seen. The 32-year-old is a four-time All-Star, having been elected in 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023. In each of those seasons, as well as 2020, he was named to the MLS Best XI, and was named MLS Defender of the Year in '20 and '21, as well.

Eddie Pope: Pope is one of the great defenders of the game, even if modern-day fans might not know much about him. For anyone familiar with his game, they'll know that he is widely considered one of the best defenders in MLS history. He was a five-time MLS All-Star, from 1997-2000 and in 2002. He's since been inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

Chad Marshall: A genuine defensive monster, Marshall was a four-time All-Star – in 2009, 2010, 2014, and 2015 – and played crucial roles in victories over Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur in back-to-back ASG appearances. He went on to be named MLS Defender of the Year in '09 and '14 as well, capping off two remarkable campaigns.

    Midfielders

Darlington Nagbe: You see Nagbe's name, and you don't need stats, numbers, or justifications for his inclusion. Just nod, agree, and read on. Surprisingly, Nagbe was only a three-time All-Star. He was a fan vote selection in 2016 and a commissioner's pick in both 2022 and 2024.

Carlos Valderamma: A five-time ASG selection from the first installment in 1996 through 2000, Valderamma was the epitome of brilliance in MLS's early years. In both the '96 and '97 All-Star Games, he was named MVP, guiding the East All-Stars to victories. Valderamma still holds the single-season record for the most assists with 26.

Ricardo Kaka: Named MVP of the 2015 ASG after securing a goal and an assist in a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, Kaka etched his name into MLS history, an historic performance from the former Ballon d'Or winner. He was a three-time MLS All-Star selection, named to the team in 2015, 2016, and 2017.

Dwayne De Rosario: A seven-time selection, De Rosario is a player of legend in MLS. From 2006-2012, he was named to seven consecutive All-Star rosters, and in his 2006 debut, he was named MVP after he scored the game-winner in a narrow 1-0 victory over Chelsea FC.

    Forwards

Thierry Henry: Henry was named to the ASG four times, from 2011-2014, representing the New York Red Bulls. The former Barcelona and Arsenal ace never scored in the ASG, but helped them to major victories over Chelsea in 2012 and Bayern Munich in 2014. At a time when MLS needed a world-renowned star to be the face of the All-Stars against world heavyweights, Henry more than delivered.

Landon Donovan: Donovan was selected to the MLS All-Star team not once, not twice but… 13 times. Yeah, you read that right. From 2001-2014, he was selected every year, but missed out in 2006 due to a hamstring injury. In 2001, he scored four goals for the West in a thrilling 6-6 draw against the East, earning MVP honors. Then, in 2014, he was once again named MVP as he scored the winner in a 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich. In terms of star power at an ASG, Donovan was man.

David Beckham: Beckham, MLS's first bona fide international superstar, was named to the ASG in 2008, 2011, and 2012 as a representative of the LA Galaxy. In 2008, he recorded an assist as MLS defeated West Ham United 3-2, and in 2012, he recorded another crucial assist as MLS defeated Chelsea 3-2. Although he was only selected three times, he directly contributed to two major victories over European opposition.

"If I'm honest" – Ian Wright says he rues Arsenal selling "quality" player

Arsenal legend Ian Wright says that a “quality” player who the club let go really should be in Mikel Arteta’s first team right now, with the pundit “surprised” by just how well he’s doing away from the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal short of forwards after key injuries

A story of Arsenal’s season has been their shortage of key forwards, after serious, long-term injuries to the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka.

Jesus could even be out of action until 2026, after the Brazilian ruptured his ACL against Man United in the FA Cup, while Havertz’s hamstring injury has ruled him out for the rest of this season.

Some good news for Arteta is that Saka has returned to training and could even feature against Fulham next week, subject to an evaluation by medics, but their shortage of attacking players has even forced midfielder Mikel Merino into an emergency forward role.

While rumours are surrounding the club’s pursuit of a new striker this summer, there are those who wonder whether they should’ve sold young centre-forward Mika Biereth.

The 22-year-old, who Arsenal let go for just £4 million, is enjoying the season of his life. Biereth is currently one of the most prolific strikers in Europe, boasting an excellent 25 goals from 37 appearances across spells at both Sturm Graz and Monaco.

Monaco signed Biereth from Sturm Graz in a £12.5 million deal midway through the campaign, with the Denmark international bagging three separate hat-tricks for them already.

Ian Wright says Mika Biereth should be a first teamer for Arsenal right now

Now, commenting on the “quality” in-form young striker, Wright has suggested that Arsenal made a mistake letting Biereth leave.

“His obsession with scoring goals. He doesn’t care how they go in, he just wants to score. That will always drive and motivate him,” said Wright, in an interview with Get French Football News.

“I have been surprised. Not that I doubt his ability, but normally you give players time to adapt to different structures and new opposition. He has that bit of surprise though, opposition won’t be too familiar with him either. The big test is if he can keep it up once the league is familiar with his game. I’m incredibly proud of him, it’s an amazing record so far and long may it continue. He’s also contributing to the team as a whole. He keeps friends from every club he plays for. That’s the type of character he is.

“If I’m honest it must’ve been something with the plans Arsenal had. Mika should’ve been in and around it at the moment. One of our chats early on was about him showing himself in the preseason for Arsenal and giving it his best go. But he had the bravery to go to Scotland, then Austria and now France and that is what shows he wants to be the best! He has to be playing to prove that. His record speaks for itself. It’s disappointing for Arsenal but on a human level, I’m delighted for him.”

If Biereth continues to build upon his electric form, Monaco will be able to demand far more than the £4 million authorised by Arsenal to let him leave. His value appears set to skyrocket, and given the plethora of shortages in attack, Arteta could really use a player of his ilk right now.

Batting

The Titans’ batting remains thin on paper. As pointed out already, Jason Roy’s pullout has disturbed Titans’ batting plans completely. While Wade will be the frontrunner to open, it is likely that Shubman Gill will have to be the pivot in the batting order. Hardik Pandya might fancy walking out in the middle order, but he has not played since last November when he turned up for the T20 World Cup. Since then has been working on his fitness.Another option could be to allow uncapped Karnataka batter Abhinav Manohar, recognised as a power-hitter, more batting time at No. 4 with Vijay Shankar or Wriddhiman Saha at No. 3. The lower order could be manned by the trio of Hardik, David Miller and Rahul Tewatia, who have the firepower to dismantle any bowling attack. And if Miller fails to make an impact, Titans also have an option in the West Indian bowling allrounder Dominic Drakes who can hit sixes lower down the order, as he showed in the 2021 CPL final, or turn up as a pinch-hitting No. 3.Should the Titans require any back-ups for injuries, they have young batters in Sai Sudharshan and Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz – Roy’s replacement and the reserve opener – and the experienced Gurkeerat Singh Mann.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Bowling

The Titans spent heavily on their bowling, shelling out a massive INR 25.25 crore on just three players – Lockie Ferguson (INR 10 crore), Tewatia (INR 9 crore) Mohammed Shami (INR 6.25 crore). Though Ferguson was expensive, the New Zealander has shown the ability to rattle batters with his searing pace. With Shami as the mainstay, the Titans’ pace attack looks solid, and they will also hope for Pandya to chip in as the fifth or sixth bowler. The franchise can also call upon the West Indian quicks Drakes and Alzarri Joseph, along with Varun Aaron and young left-arm seamer Yash Dayal. The spin department will be led by the Afghanistan star Rashid Khan, with R Sai Kishore, who has thrived in domestic cricket, set to be their left-arm fingerspin option.Though the Titans splurged heavily on Tewatia, the spin-bowling allrounder has not been consistent with either bat or ball of late. Afghanistan’s young Noor Ahmad, who recently featured in the Under-19 World Cup and also the BBL, will be the second overseas wristspinner.R Sai Kishore can bowl across phases•TNCA

Young player to watch out for

One of the most sought-after players in the mega auction this February, Sai Kishore’s stocks have only risen in the last few years. The lanky spinner can bowl across phases and can keep a check on the run rate. Though the 25-year-old didn’t get a game for Chennai Super Kings despite being part of their squad in the last three seasons, being part of an IPL set-up and had the opportunity of being a net bowler for India have helped him evolve as a bowler. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament this season, he finished as the leading wicket-taker for Tamil Nadu in their title-winning run, scalping ten wickets in eight matches, while conceding just 6.06 runs an over.
