"Brilliant" £120k-p/w player left gutted as Newcastle reject bid for him

A “brilliant” Newcastle United player has been left fuming with the club’s decision to knock back a bid for him, a new report has claimed.

Newcastle book second Wembley trip in three years

Things are looking up at St. James’ Park right now, with Newcastle in a strong position to push for Champions League qualification, while they have also booked their place at Wembley for the second time in three years.

The Magpies will be hoping to right the wrongs of the 2023 EFL Cup final when they travel to the capital in March, with Eddie Howe’s side set to take on either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur.

Howe’s side defeated Arsenal 2-0 last night to rack up a 4-0 aggregate victory, with Alexander Isak running the Gunners’ defence ragged at times, although it was a solid all-round performance, with the defence deserving credit for keeping another clean sheet.

Kieran Trippier played the full 90 minutes and dealt with everything the game asked of him, however, a new report has suggested the right-back is extremely unhappy with the fact Newcastle have knocked back a loan bid from Galatasaray.

Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon celebrates scoring their second goal with KieranTrippier

Trippier was said to be open to an exit in the January transfer window, despite remaining an important player for Howe’s side, and his morale has been “seriously damaged” by the recent decision to turn down a bid.

The Turkish side wanted to sign the right-back on a straight loan deal, rather than including a buy option, which may be the reason the offer was deemed unsatisfactory by the Tyneside club.

Newcastle and PIF expected to pursue summer move for "incredible" £75m star

The Magpies are planning to spend big when the transfer market reopens.

Feb 5, 2025

With the Turkish transfer window still open for a few more days, the situation could still change, but it is now becoming more unlikely the 34-year-old will leave this winter.

Trippier could be a history-maker at Newcastle

If the report is to be believed, it is strange the England international is so determined to move to Galatasaray this winter, especially fresh off the back of last night.

The full-back is now just one game away from making history by helping Newcastle win their first major trophy since 1969, which would also be the second major honour of his career, having won the La Liga title with Atletico Madrid.

The £120k-per-week defender has not been as prominent a member of the first team as he would’ve liked to be this season, however, and he would stand a good chance of winning the Turkish title if he completed a move, with Galatasaray six points clear.

Although he has been lauded as “brilliant” by members of the media, the former Spurs man’s best days are arguably behind him, with Tino Livramento making the right-back position his own this season.

However, Trippier proved last night that he still has a lot to give, so it is probably a wise move to block his departure, particularly considering it is now too late to bring in a replacement.

Romano: Newcastle have personal term agreement in place to sign 22 y/o star

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed who Newcastle United’s “top” target this summer is, with personal terms already agreed with the player in question.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies have reportedly joined the race to sign Tammy Abraham in the summer transfer window, with the Englishman likely to leave Roma. He is currently on loan at fellow Serie A side AC Milan for the remainder of the season.

Newcastle also need to be focusing on signing at least one new centre-back at the end of the campaign, with Bournemouth teenager Dean Huijsen linked with a move to St James’ Park. Still just 19 years of age, the Dutchman has been superb at the heart of the Cherries’ defence all season, helping them mount a genuine top-four push in the Premier League.

Bournemouth's DeanHuijsencelebrates after the match

Hugo Ekitike has emerged as another attacking option for the Magpies, with the 22-year-old scoring 12 times in the Bundesliga for Eintracht Frankfurt in 2024/25 to date, also chipping in with two goals and assists apiece in the Europa League.

Darwin Nunez missed a sitter for Liverpool against Aston Villa in midweek, but Newcastle have felt his wrath in the past, not least when he scored twice late on at St James’ last season. They have been mentioned as an option for the Reds striker, but in a swap deal with Alexander Isak, which could be disastrous.

Romano reveals Newcastle's "top" goalkeeper target

Taking to X on Friday, Romano said that Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford remains the “top” target for Newcastle this summer, with PIF already having a personal term agreement in place:

At this point, it would be a surprise if Trafford wasn’t a Magpies player next season, considering the level of interest there has been in him in recent months.

The 22-year-old is enjoying a fantastic campaign with Burnley, starting 32 matches in the Championship and being part of a team that has incredibly only conceded nine goals in the league all season long before this weekend’s action. He even saved two late penalties from Wilson Isidor in the 0-0 draw with Sunderland last month, with Scott Parker hailing him after the game:

“Two penalties and the game could have looked very different if not for James Trafford and the saves he’s made. Not many words can describe what he’s produced. I don’t think I’ve been involved in a game like that one at the end. Both were very good penalties and Traff has flown across his goal. Everything about him in terms of those big saves, we owe him one tonight.”

Newcastle join race to sign "amazing" striker who’s already scored at SJP

The Magpies are more than familiar with his ability…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 20, 2025

At just 22, Trafford feels like the natural heir to Nick Pope at Newcastle, and a possible future England No.1 if he reaches his potential, so the Magpies signing him this summer makes complete sense.

Keaton Jennings left to grin and bear it through another Lancashire heartbreak

Lancashire have been in the running for three competitions this season and won nothing

Lancashire have been in the running for three competitions this season and have won nothing. Defeat in the Royal London Cup final followed an agonising near-miss in the T20 Blast final that Hampshire famously won twice, and a Championship challenge that was finally extinguished by a six-point penalty for disciplinary reasons. For Keaton Jennings, Lancashire’s captain in the 50-over competition, another disappointment was hard to take, and it was testimony to his good nature and maturity that he was able to smile in the face of failure.”I suppose one positive is we gave ourselves a chance to win,” he said. “We got into two finals and in the Championship we have played some really good cricket and had we been able to force a result in a couple of games it might have been different.”It is tough to take. You can look back on every bad moment and be incredibly hard on yourself but the fact is the guys have played some really good cricket.”Jennings had been one of the culprits in a surprisingly error-ridden Lancashire fielding display – Kent’s outfielding comfortably outdid them – and then was dismissed for 72 when an untroubled innings was promising to set up victory.”Our catching was a factor,” he said. “Our fielding throughout the competition has been a stand-out for me. I don’t want to say exceptional, but the guys have thrown their bodies around and caught some seriously good catches.”He must be in the running for the reserve opener’s position on England’s Test tour of Pakistan, but it was not the time for him to wonder about it.”I’m not particularly wondering right now,” he said. “As far as England selection is concerned it’s completely out of my hands. This defeat is hard to take and I don’t want to look any further.”Kent’s player of the match as they took their first List A title for 44 years, ending a run of eight consecutive defeats in final since then, was Joey Evison, who collected his award while chants rang around the ground for the allrounder he is earmarked to replace – Darren Stevens, 26 years his senior, and stricken by a groin injury which ended his spell after eight oversEvison struck 97 on his return to Trent Bridge – he was loaned out to Kent for this season ahead of a three-year deal – and he also bowled a decisive penultimate over with Lancashire 22 short and the last pair at the crease. He looked nerveless, but revealed that he was troubled by cramp.”I was cramping up a bit so I was a bit worried about that,” he said. “I obviously didn’t drink enough. I was stretching quite a lot. It could have gone the other way. Liam Hurt can be quite dangerous in those situations, but the final ball came out nicely.”If you’d have told me at the start of the day I would get 97, as well as two wickets and a catch, and I would have bitten your hand off.”I think we outfielded Lancashire. They dropped a few catches and we managed to take them.”If Stevens could be expected to limp happily around the bar throughout the evening, his season, his Kent career, his entire career perhaps now at an end, Kent’s celebrations would have to be tempered. They are still not clear of potential relegation and face a demanding penultimate match against Championship-chasing Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl on Tuesday.

Everton now on the verge of sealing deal for "outstanding" £50k-p/w forward

Everton are now on the verge of sealing a deal to sign an “outstanding” striker, according to a report.

Toffees want a striker before the deadline

The Toffees have been pursuing a new striker for much of the January transfer window, given that Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and their need to bring in a new forward has increased over the past week.

Calvert-Lewin picked up an injury in the hard-fought 1-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion, with former scout Bryan King claiming he will be a huge loss for David Moyes’ side: “Calvert-Lewin would be a big miss for Everton.

“Especially considering the way they’ve played in the past two matches and the way he played in the win against Tottenham.

“All supporters can do is wait and see what the actual diagnosis is. If he has suffered a hamstring injury, Calvert-Lewin won’t be going anywhere, not until he is fit at least, and that might not be until the end of February.”

With doubt also lingering over Beto’s future at Goodison Park, it could be vital for Moyes to bring in a new striker before the deadline, and there has now been a new update on the pursuit of Rangers’ Hamza Igamane.

According to a report from Tuttosport (via Goodison News), Everton are now on the verge of sealing a deal to sign Igamane, who is viewed as the ideal replacement for Calvert-Lewin.

The Friedkin Group are said to have gifted Moyes a £33.5m transfer kitty for the final few days of the January transfer window, and the plan is to sign two strikers, given that Beto could also leave this month, with a number of other targets under consideration.

Alongside the Rangers forward, the Toffees are also interested in signing Evan Ferguson, Brian Brobbey and Taiwo Awoniyi.

Igamane impressing at Ibrox

The Moroccan only arrived at Ibrox in the summer, but it would be fair to say he has made an instant impression, recently receiving high praise from scout Ben Mattinson after scoring a perfect hat-trick.

At just 22-years-old, there are plenty of signs the £50k-per-week Rangers star could be a long-term solution for the Toffees in attack, having amassed 16 goal contributions in 27 appearances since arriving in Scotland.

As such, it is promising news that Everton are advancing towards getting a deal done, and they will be hoping the sale of Beto can fund a large part of the transfer.

Spurs targeting "future legend" who could become better than VDV & Romero

Tottenham Hotspur’s defensive injury crisis has been well documented in recent months, undoubtedly contributing massively to the recent slump in form under Ange Postecoglou.

Saturday’s clash with Newcastle United saw Archie Gray feature in an unnatural centre-back role once more, with Djed Spence also having to do the same on the left-hand side of the backline.

Brandon Austin was brought in between the sticks for his first-ever Premier League appearance, as a result of Fraser Forster’s illness, which kept him out of the meeting with his former side.

Tottenham Hotspur managerAngePostecogloubefore the match

Guglielmo Vicario, Ben Davies, Destiny Udogie, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have all sustained various setbacks in recent times, with the aforementioned players the main crop of defensive talent currently in the Aussie’s first team.

Such absences have seen Spurs plummet down the table, with the supporters desperately hoping for the return of the stars as soon as possible to help save their campaign, which is rapidly declining week after week.

However, with the January transfer window now open, Ange has an opportunity to add depth to his defensive unit, leading to one name already being linked with a move to North London.

Spurs in the race to land defensive wonderkid

According to CaughtOffside, Spurs have entered the race to sign Lens star Abdukodir Khusanov this window, but face stiff competition from various other top-flight outfits.

Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers have already enquired about a move for the 20-year-old, with Newcastle United also on the list of potential destinations for the youngster.

The report mentions that Khusanov could be available for a fee in the region of €20m (£16.6m) a potential bargain given his recent form for the French side in Ligue 1 throughout 2024/25.

He’s started 11 times in the league, with Lens currently occupying seventh place and looking to secure a third consecutive season of European football, with the Uzbekistan international playing a crucial role in their ambitions.

Given the interest from elsewhere, the Spurs hierarchy will have a huge battle on their hands to secure the services of the young star, but he would be an impressive addition – one that could push two current stars for their first-team spots in the coming months.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Why Khusanov could become better than Van de Ven & Romero

Over the last 12 months, Van de Ven and Romero have often been Postecoglou’s main centre-back partnership, handing the pair the responsibility of leading the club up the Premier League table.

However, the recent injury issues have highlighted the need for added depth in the backline, which could prevent the likes of Gray from featuring in such a role down the line.

All supporters will be desperate for the return of the aforementioned players, but one of them may struggle to regain their regular starting role should any deal be completed for Khusanov in the next few weeks.

The 20-year-old, who’s been dubbed as a “future legend” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has produced various stats in the current campaign that are better than Van de Ven and Romero could muster, highlighting what a quality addition he would be.

The Lens ace has made more blocks per 90 minutes whilst also making more interceptions per 90, showcasing his defensive qualities that could improve a Spurs backline that has shipped 21 goals in all competitions since the start of December.

Khusanov has also won more aerials along with more clearances per 90, providing Ange with the star quality his side has desperately lacked recently as a result of the injury crisis in North London.

Such figures could see the Aussie replace either of the regular starters after January should they strike a deal with the French outfit before the end of the transfer window.

The club’s lack of depth has been desperately highlighted, with Khusanov undoubtedly a stellar talent who could provide the depth and quality to help transform their fortunes during the second half of the season.

£16.6m would be an absolute bargain for a player of his star quality, having the potential to turn into a potential world beater, but it’s pivotal that they fend off interest from elsewhere to secure his signature during the ongoing window.

Ashwin on ODIs: 'I switch off the telly after a point of time'

R Ashwin, the India offspinner, has said that he “switches off the telly” while watching 50-over cricket and has advocated a return to the use of one ball per innings in ODI cricket to bring bowlers back into the game.Since 2011, two new balls have been used per innings in ODI cricket (one from each end), with the result that they have been relatively hard even at the end of an innings, and reverse-swing has become a rare feature of 50-over cricket.Related

  • Rohit Sharma not writing off ODI cricket just yet

  • If 50-over cricket is dying, maybe it needs to be put on a pedestal

  • If ODIs feel irrelevant now, just wait till the next FTP cycle

Speaking on the podcast, Ashwin – who is not part of the India squad for the ongoing ODI series in England – suggested that reverting to a single ball per ODI innings would help spinners, as well as bring reverse-swing back into play.”I’m an absolute cricket badger, a nut, and I switch off the telly after a point of time, watching the one-day game,” Ashwin said. “That’s frankly very scary for that format of the game, I think. Those ebbs and flows, when they go missing, it’s not cricket anymore, it’s just an extended format of T20.”I think one ball [per innings] is something that would work and even the spinners would come into play. You’d have a lot more spinners bowling at the back half of the game. They are bowling right now but you might see a little more slowing of the pitch or whatever it is, and the reverse-swing might come back into play which I think is very crucial for the game.”I think one-day cricket, the beauty of one-day cricket is – sorry, was – that there was a lot of ebbs and flows left in the game. Somebody needed to just bide their time, take the game deep, and the ball would be reverse-swinging. At one point, 60 balls, 60 to get, with seven wickets in hand, and you’re backing the bowling team to win. Not any more: that’s going to be a canter now.”Ashwin’s comments echoed those made recently on the same podcast by the New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult, who suggested that “two new balls on really good wickets” had turned ODI cricket into a formulaic game.”In New Zealand, generally they’re drop-in wickets on rugby grounds with a wicket that doesn’t turn,” Boult had said. “You get 312 and then the team chasing chases that in 47 overs and you think ‘where did the last six hours go?’ I’d love to see it moving around, turning, 250 plays 250 – but also 420 plays 390.”

Kieron Pollard reunited with Sunil Narine as Surrey deal for T20 Blast is confirmed

T20 legend available for majority of season after announcing international retirement last month

Matt Roller20-May-2022Kieron Pollard will play county cricket for the first time in more than a decade this summer after signing for Surrey for the Vitality Blast, where he will link up with his close friend and compatriot Sunil Narine.ESPNcricinfo revealed last month that Pollard had been approached by multiple counties after his international retirement to discuss the possibility of him playing in the Blast and that Surrey were front-runners after Sean Abbott’s involvement on Australia’s tour to Sri Lanka forced him to pull out of his deal.Surrey confirmed the signing on Friday and Pollard is expected to make his debut in their second home game of the T20 season against Gloucestershire at the Kia Oval on May 31. It will be his first appearance in county cricket since 2011, when his Somerset side were beaten by Leicestershire in the final; he was due to play for Northamptonshire in 2020 but his deal was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.Related

Pollard retires from international cricket

“It has been quite some time since I’ve played county cricket and I’m thrilled to be returning to the Vitality Blast competition in Surrey colours this year,” Pollard said in a Surrey press release. “The Kia Oval is a special place to play, especially in front of a full house.”Surrey have not won the Blast since its inaugural season in 2003 and failed to qualify for the knockout stages last year but are among the favourites for the title this season. They are likely to be without several England players – including Sam and Tom Curran, Ollie Pope, Ben Foakes, Jason Roy and Reece Topley – at various stages due to the Test and ODI series against New Zealand and the Netherlands respectively, but securing Pollard and Narine for the majority of the season represents a significant boost to their hopes.Pollard and Narine have only played a handful of games together on English soil, most recently a one-off T20I at Chester-le-Street in 2017, but will resume their hugely successful partnership at the Kia Oval. They have previously played together for West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago, Dhaka Dynamites in the BPL and Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL.Pollard spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons at Somerset•Getty Images”We’re very pleased to bring Kieron to the club,” Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket, said. “He brings an incredible range of skills as well as experience at the very highest level of the sport. His all-round ability will make a significant difference to the depth of the squad.””This Surrey side is full of talent and should certainly be mounting a challenge for the title,” Pollard added. “I hope that my experience will add a vital ingredient to the club’s success this year.”Pollard has had a quiet season for Mumbai Indians in the ongoing IPL season, with 144 runs across 11 innings at a strike rate of just 107.46. He announced his decision to retire from international cricket and give up the West Indies white-ball captaincy midway through the tournament and has struggled with the demands of stringent Covid protocols in India, writing on Instagram last week: “bubble life isn’t easy”.Despite his lean run, Pollard remains one of the world’s most sought-after T20 players as a highly-experienced finisher, occasional bowler and leader. He will also offer support to Chris Jordan, Surrey’s new T20 captain, with whom he has played at Adelaide Strikers, Peshawar Zalmi and Trinbago. The move means Pollard will spend the majority of the English summer living in London. At last month’s Hundred draft, Pollard was the top pick for London Spirit and is expected to be available for the majority of the season before flying back to the Caribbean late in the group stages to play in the CPL.

Aston Villa keen on signing 21 y/o Real Madrid gem seen as ideal for Emery

Aston Villa and NSWE are thought to be interested in signing a Real Madrid player who is seen as ideal for Unai Emery.

Aston Villa eyeing new signings ahead of January

The Villans failed to make it four wins in a row in all competitions after a late defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Despite a stunning save from Emiliano Martinez in the second half and Jhon Duran’s opener, two late goals were enough for Forest to take the three points.

Emery said after the defeat: “Disappointed, but we are in a process. We played the match that I had in my mind. We tried to play dominating and keeping possession. They are usually not going high press, man-to-man or even with more players. We were building up with the goalkeeper, centre-backs and midfielders. Until the minute 70 we did it (the game plan). We didn’t concede corners or chances.

“After our goal they changed. They pushed more and added more players (attacking). In that moment you have to be consistent in the game plan. We were not that strong in the tactical idea and we started conceding attacks, corners and then a goal which VAR disallowed. We conceded two goals.

Benfica defender Antonio Silva is also of interest to Villa, as is Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund, and another name has now emerged from La Liga giants Real Madrid.

Aston Villa interested in Real Madrid defender Asencio

According to a report from Spain, Aston Villa are interested in signing Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio, with top-flight rivals Forest and Newcastle also keen.

The 21-year-old has impressed in his limited La Liga appearances at the Bernabeu and is seen as an ideal option for Villa and Emery after coming through Madrid’s academy and playing for their youth sides.

Asencio, who is primarily a centre-back, is valued at around €10m, so should he move to link up with Emery, could rival the likes of Ezri Konsa, Diego Carlos, Pau Torres and Tyrone Mings for a spot in the matchday squad. NSWE may have to pip Forest and Newcastle to a deal, so it could be one to keep an eye on heading into 2025.
