The goalkeeper conceded three times as Luton took a 3-2 lead in the second half, with Ross Barkley's goal a particularly glaring error from the shot stopper. However, Arteta refused to address the Spaniard's performance as he spoke to the media afterwards.

Asked to comment on Raya's display, Arteta said: "I was so happy for the team. I have spoken to all of them, they are so happy they are jumping around."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Raya's display will likely revive the debate surrounding Raya's place in the team. Many fans have been calling for Aaron Ramsdale to be reinstated as the first choice shot stopper as they feel he is a more reliable option, whereas Raya has faced criticism for his many errors since joining the Gunners on loan from Brentford.

It seems Arteta will stand by his decision to make Raya his starting goalkeeper when his side meet Aston Villa at the weekend. The north London side will hope to extend their winning run to seven matches in all competitions in Saturday's game.

Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti and the best managers of the 21st century – ranked

As Real Madrid and Manchester City meet in the Champions League semi-finals, where do their coaches rank among the best since the year 2000?

Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola are very different personalities, but one thing they share is a knack for winning football matches, and the biggest ones at that. Between them, the Catalan and the Italian have won four Champions Leagues, 15 league titles and 13 domestic cups.

They will square up against each other again in Tuesday's Champions League semi-final first leg between Real Madrid and Manchester City. Ancelotti is three matches away from becoming only the second manager to retain the trophy in the Champions League era, while Guardiola is desperate to get his hands on Europe's biggest prize for the first time in 12 years.

But where do these two titans of modern coaching rank among the best managers in the 21st century? GOAL decides…

    10Antonio Conte

Every time Conte takes charge of a team, success instantly follows. Admittedly, he often leaves scorched earth in his wake, as Tottenham fans can attest to, but not many managers can say they have won five league titles across two leagues, restoring huge clubs such as Juventus, Inter and Chelsea to glory after inheriting messes from his predecessors.

The one black mark against Conte is his European record. His Inter were beaten in the 2020 Europa League final by Sevilla and then failed to get out of the group stage in the Champions League, a fate which also befell his Juve side in 2013-14. And he has never gone beyond the quarter-finals of Europe's biggest competition, which is a failure considering the teams he has managed.

    9Luis Enrique

An uncompromising, combative forward in his playing days, Luis Enrique followed the exact same footsteps of Guardiola by playing for Barcelona, taking charge of the club's reserve team, going on to manage the first team and then winning every trophy imaginable with them.

An idol of the Camp Nou faithful, he had inherited a stale team from Gerardo Martino, but still had a fantastic squad to work with, including serial winners Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique, Xavi Hernandez and Lionel Messi, plus newer arrivals Neymar and Luis Suarez.

He shook the team up, although perhaps his greatest decision was to back down from a conflict with Messi in January 2015 after the Argentine took issue with being benched. After a tense few days, the pair made their peace, and five months later Barca swept to a clean sweep of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League, led by perhaps the greatest front three of all time in Messi, Suarez, and Neymar.

Luis Enrique retained the title in his next season and won the Copa del Rey twice more before taking charge of Spain, reaching the Euro 2020 semi-finals and the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup.

    8Vicente del Bosque

The mustachioed Spaniard was Real Madrid manager for only three-and-a-half seasons but managed to win seven trophies, including two Champions Leagues and two La Liga titles. He was Spain manager for eight years and won the World Cup and the European Championship. In a remarkably short space of time, he completed football.

But Del Bosque never got the respect he deserved. The day after winning his second title in 2003, he was sacked, learning the news as he was passing through a corridor inside Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid president Florentino Perez said at the time that Del Bosque's methods were too traditional and that the club were looking for someone more sophisticated, but it took Madrid another 11 years before they won another Champions League. Perhaps those traditional methods weren't so bad after all.

    7Diego Simeone

Spanish football clubs are not known for being patient with managers, yet Diego Simeone has managed to spend more than 11 years at Atletico Madrid, turning the Rojiblancos from a basket case at risk of being relegated into one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Atletico have finished in the top three in La Liga in all 11 seasons under Simeone and twice lifted the title. And they have reached two Champions League finals, won two Europa Leagues and one Copa del Rey.

But it's not just about silverware. The fiery Argentine has utterly transformed the club, who now play in one of the best stadiums in the continent. In an everchanging football landscape, when it is not unusual for clubs to change managers three times in a season, the sound of worshipping Atletico fans chanting 'Ole Ole Ole, Cholo Simeone' is one constant. More than a football coach, he is the leader of a religion: Cholismo.

Palmer, Kayky, Delap and the Man City wonderkids who could follow in Foden's footsteps

The English champions have one of the best squads in Europe, but several homegrown players are pushing for inclusion

Manchester City boast an incredible youth academy and several graduates now look perfectly poised to make a big impact in the Premier League.

There are, of course, those that will have to move away from the Etihad Stadium to realise their dream of making it in the big time, with Gavin Bazunu, Darko Gyabi and Romeo Lavia all set to move to rivals this summer.

However, a number of potential stars look capable of following in Phil Foden's footsteps by becoming key players in Pep Guardiola's first team.

Indeed, with City once again set to compete on four fronts – and this time during a World Cup year – several talented youngsters should get a chance to shine in 2022-23.

Below, GOAL takes a look at the players most likely to earn some game time under Guardiola this season…

  • Getty Images

    Cole Palmer

The emergence of Cole Palmer is one of the reasons why City allowed Gabriel Jesus to join Arsenal for £45 million ($55m).

There is a strong belief among first-team coaches that the forward has the quality and the personality to become an important member of the senior squad.

The 20-year-old has already shown his skills and ability in his 13 competitive appearances to date, including a Champions League goal away to Club Brugge and a dazzling FA Cup performance against Swindon.

"Cole has a special quality that's difficult to find, he finishes it most of the time," Guardiola said after City's win in Belgium. "He's training with us and taking our principles. He's a player for the future of this club."

Injuries cut short his opportunities last season but he will continue his development this term, following a similar path to Phil Foden with cameos and domestic cup appearances.

  • Luke Mbete

The London-born defender has been talked about as a prospect since he joined from Brentford as a 13-year-old and he made his first-team debut in the Carabao Cup last season.

"He trained with us for a long time and his application is really high," Guardiola said of Mbete when he was part of the first-team squad for a Champions League last-16 tie with Sporting CP.

Strong and with a good reading of dangerous situations, Mbete has plenty of the traits that the City boss likes to see from his central defenders.

Now, it's about gaining experience and he will get plenty of that training with the first team on a regular basis this season.

“I feel I am learning and improving all the time and there couldn’t be a better club to keep developing," Mbete said after signing a contract extension until 2027.

  • Getty Images

    Kayky

City spent an initial £9m ($12m) in April 2021 to secure the services of the 17-year-old, who had already made his debut for Brazilian side Fluminese.

Moving to Europe at such a young age, it was always thought that he would take time to bed in from both a footballing and personal perspective, which is why he was given the opportunity to grow in the Elite Development Squad (EDS).

A left-footed winger who often plays on the right, Kayky boasts that classic Brazilian flair for dribbling but he is still getting used to the positional requirements at City.

However, his strength and conditioning have already improved since arriving in Manchester and he should add to his game time in the Premier League (just six minutes to date) and the FA Cup (four) this season.

"He’s very young," Guardiola said. "We know of his talent; otherwise, City wouldn’t have signed him. He’s very smart, very prepared."

    James McAtee

After an outstanding campaign for the EDS, the 19-year-old was named Premier League 2 Player of the Season thanks to 18 goals and seven assists in just 23 appearances.

His balance and vision earned him the nickname 'The Salford Silva' and by adding a killer instinct to his game, he has become an even more dangerous player than before.

The midfielder has made six appearances for the first team and signed a contract extension keeping him at the club until 2026 in February.

"It's important he's fully committed to the club, he's a City supporter, and he loves to be here," Guardiola said. "We have a lot of confidence in him."

However, it must be noted that a number of clubs have shown an interest in taking him on loan this summer, particularly after his call-up to the England under-21 squad.

Willey the matchwinner after England release

Northamptonshire claimed their opening win of the Natwest T20 Blast campaign with a comfortable six-wicket win over Derbyshire at Wantage Road

ScorecardDay release: David Willey clubbed 60 off 27 balls and also claimed wickets•Getty ImagesNorthamptonshire claimed their opening win of the Natwest T20 Blast campaign with a comfortable six-wicket win over Derbyshire at Wantage Road.David Willey was the star of the North Group contest after being released from England’s national team’s one-day squad, hitting an impressive 60 off 27 balls and two wickets as the Steelbacks overhauled the visitors’ 166 for seven with 13 balls to spare. After losing the toss and bowling first, the home side were encouraged in Willey’s opening over when Derbyshire’s Sri Lankan star Tillekaratne Dilshan tried his scoop shot – only to see middle and leg stump knocked back. It was the Sri Lankan’s final innings before a stint in the Caribbean Premier League. The next four overs yielded 27 runs, with Wes Durston providing most of the momentum. But Chesney Hughes wafted at Steven Crook’s first ball outside the off stump and edged to Ben Duckett which was immediately followed by Wayne Madsen being trapped lbw first ball. That left Derbyshire 37 for 3 but Scott Elstone helped Durston put on 52 for the fourth wicket, with a slog sweep just over midwicket off Shahid Afridi his highlight. As the Falcons tried to up the tempo, Shiv Thakor was run out for 15 when going for a third, although third umpire Mark Benson had to check whether Willey had touched the rope in preventing a boundary before effecting the dismissal.Tom Poynton bludgeoned two sixes off the final over but Durston was left largely alone to keep the attack going. He carried his bat for 77 off 63 balls, with his half-century coming off 41.Northamptonshire lost Richard Levi in the first over, clipping Thakor to Wayne Madsen inside the circle at backward square leg – and Derbyshire sensed they were in the game. But Willey decided to up the rate in exciting fashion, taking 24 off the fourth over – bowled by Dilshan from the Turner Stand End. Two sixes sailed over long-off, followed by a cover drive for four, with the over completed with another huge six down the ground.Willey – who reached his 50 off 21 balls was caught gleefully by Madsen off Palladino – but Afridi picked up where he left off, continuing the frenetic pace.Surviving a tight stumping appeal off Hughes, the Pakistani globetrotter added 34 off 17 before Billy Godleman’s footwork in front of the boundary rope allowed a stunning catch for Thakor’s second wicket. However, Alex Wakely and Steven Crook saw the hosts home, giving them their first win in 2015 and consigning Derbyshire to a fourth defeat in five.

> CONFIRA E SIMULE A TABELA DO CAMPEONATO BRASILEIRO

> O DIA A DIA DO BOTAFOGO

Samuels focused on Smith's Test preparations

Making sure Devon Smith did enough to push for a place in the starting XI in next week’s Test series opener against South Africa was more on Marlon Samuels’ mind than his own performance in West Indians’ tour match in Benoni. Smith was brought into the squad to replace the injured Chris Gayle and seems set to make a comeback after a three-and-half year absence from the longest format, so Samuels wanted to ensure he is ready.”I was out there telling him that he is coming back and he should take his time and push towards a milestone, and know that he needs a situation like this to prove his mentality and character,” Samuels said. “I was basically trying to make sure that he gets his century and makes a statement that ‘I am back and I have strength’.”Smith and Samuels shared in a third-wicket stand of 360 and batted together for 59 overs, during which both enjoyed success. While Samuels retired after making a double-hundred, Smith called time on his innings at 174 but spent the equivalent of more than a day’s play at the crease to demonstrate the temperament needed for Test cricket. “I think his mind is much stronger now and he is more relaxed,” Samuels said.Samuels didn’t bother with a similar pace himself. His century on the first-day came off 101 balls and his second hundred took only 73 deliveries more as he extended his form following West Indies’ abandoned tour of India. Samuels scored two centuries in three ODIs in India.”I’m back in white clothes now so I tried to pace myself,” Samuels said. “And it was a wonderful feeling to get to the double-hundred. I’m feeling confident about my batting. Confident but not confident, because the Test matches are when the real thing starts. When the real thing starts, we’ll see how it goes from there but I’m looking forward to us putting up a good fight. Last time I was here, I scored a lot of runs and hope I can repeat that.”Samuels was part of the West Indies team that won a first-ever Test match on South African soil in 2007. He scored 94 in the first innings of the victory in Port Elizabeth, and was the top-scorer in the series overall. He finished the series with two fifties and a century and knows that his team will need a similar performance from him, especially in the absence of Gayle and Darren Bravo, if they hope to challenge the world’s top-ranked Test outfit. “I’m looking forward to doing whatever I can to help my team,” he said. His advice to his fellow batsmen is to see the tour as an opportunity to show how they measure up: “It’s about backing yourself and believing in your ability and taking your chances. Taking your chances means playing your shots and going out there. But also being patient.”While Samuels has cautioned his batting team-mates to hang back at first, on what are expected to be spicy surfaces, he wants the pace attack to take advantage of the conditions by being both aggressive and astute.”I think we have the skill in the fast-bowling department to do extremely well here,” he said. “As long as our fast bowlers, with their skills, are patient we will give the South African batsmen a challenge and they won’t be scoring runs so easily against the wonderful attack that we have at the moment, with youth and experience.”West Indies have one more day in Benoni for their bowlers to have a run before the first Test starts in Centurion on Wednesday.

Varun Aaron to join Durham

India fast bowler Varun Aaron will join Durham as an overseas player for the final few weeks of the County Championship season

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Sep-20140:35

‘Aaron can’t afford to lose the pace’ – McGrath

India fast bowler Varun Aaron will join Durham as an overseas player for the final few weeks of the County Championship season. He will replace Australia allrounder John Hastings, who has been called up to play for Chennai Super Kings for the upcoming Champions League T20.Aaron will be available for the final two fixtures of the season, against Northamptonshire and Warwickshire, and is expected to fly to England next week. Durham have been forced to strengthen their forces because of the lurking threat of relegation from Division One of the LV= Championship.Aaron played the fourth and fifth Tests against England and took five wickets for 250 runs – as well as breaking Stuart Broad’s nose with a bouncer – before returning to India to join Glenn McGrath at the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai for a 10-day fast-bowling programme.”It’s an honour for me to play for Durham” Aaron said. “I’ve always wanted to play county cricket in the UK and am looking to play next season. However, I am happy that the opportunity has come sooner and I look forward to joining the rest of the team.”Aaron is the second Indian player to sign with an English county this season after Cheteshwar Pujara agreed terms with Derbyshire. Varun had previously indicated he wanted to play domestic cricket in England to help “develop as a cricketer”.Durham coach Jon Lewis said: “He’s obviously got some good pace and he’s young and keen. He didn’t start the series [against England] and came into it halfway through and made an impact because he brought genuine pace to their attack, which they didn’t really have early on. I’m sure Stuart Broad remembers him!”It bolsters our seam attack as we are a bit thin on the ground at the moment. The plan is that he’ll join us at Lord’s and spend a bit of time with us and that’ll give him a few days to get ready for the first game.”Durham, champions in 2013, are currently seventh in Division One with three wins and three losses out of 13 games but they boosted their chances of avoiding relegation with a 54-run win over Nottinghamshire this week. Their next match is against Middlesex at Lord’s from September 9.

Chopra returns in style as Warwickshire climb table

An unbeaten 92 by Varun Chopra and a whirlwind unbeaten 43 from 15 balls by Laurie Evans overwhelmed Surrey as Warwickshire brought alive their Royal London Cup campaign with victory by 111 runs

ScorecardVarun Chopra showed his injury lay-off had not hurt his form•Getty ImagesAn unbeaten 92 by Varun Chopra and a whirlwind unbeaten 43 from 15 balls by Laurie Evans overwhelmed Surrey as Warwickshire brought alive their Royal London Cup campaign with victory by 111 runs in a rain-adjusted match at Edgbaston. After a long delay in mid-innings, Warwickshire thrashed 84 in six overs to reach a challenging 218 for 2 and Surrey folded for 153 when set a Duckworth-Lewis target of 265 from 33 overs.A fourth defeat in six games in Group B has killed off Surrey’s hopes but Warwickshire are still in contention with away fixtures to come against Glamorgan and Nottinghamshire. As a rehearsal for a further meeting in next week’s NatWest T20 Blast semi-final, this was most likely an unreliable form guide. Both teams were without a number of high-profile players and the interference by the weather inevitably raised ifs and buts.A sharp shower reduced the match to 48 overs per side and a deluge halted Warwickshire’s innings at 134 for 1 after 27 had been bowled. At this point the batting side would have been getting ready to accelerate through the gears, but after a delay of more than two-and-a-half hours, they had to embark on a mad thrash.Although Jonathan Trott quickly perished, slogging high towards long off after making 31, Evans destroyed his former county’s bowling. Opening up with successive sixes off Stuart Meaker, he dominated a partnership of 70 in 4.1 overs with Chopra. In all he hit five fours, as well as a massive third six off Meaker, and in the mayhem Surrey’s shell-shocked attack simply fell apart.Even when the game was progressing under more routine circumstances, Warwickshire always gave the impression of being in control, starting with a stand of 89 before William Porterfield was caught behind for 36 off Tim Linley’s first ball.Chopra went on to hit 10 fours and a six from 99 balls as he continued a prolific run following a 10-day break since injuring a thigh muscle when making 86 not out against Essex in the Twenty20 quarter-final. In his last eight innings in limited-overs formats, he has scored 516 runs.Only Steven Davies, with two sixes in a brisk 37, and Tillakaratne Dilshan promised anything as substantial as Surrey creaked under the pressure of a tough run chase. While Davies was bowled in Jeetan Patel’s first over, Dilshan went on to a cleverly compiled 58 from 60 balls until he was fifth out, top-edging Recordo Gordon to Trott at third man.Patel finished with the best figures of 4 for 30 and Rikki Clarke completed a good day for former Surrey players with two wickets in successive balls and two catches.Next time the teams meet, Surrey will be hoping to welcome back the likes of Kevin Pietersen, quarter-final matchwinner Jason Roy, specialist spinner Zafar Ansari and two pace bowlers, Jade Dernbach and Matthew Dunn.Warwickshire, meanwhile, expect to have their England players, Ian Bell and Chris Woakes, available ahead of the one-day internationals against India and are also hoping to get Shoaib Malik back in their side after his performances in seven group games before he left to play in the Caribbean Premier League.Dougie Brown, director of cricket at Edgbaston, is keen to have him back but added: “There are still visa and administrative barriers that need to be overcome, and we are still unsure as to whether this can be completed in such a short time.”
