West Ham show short-term vision with 2021 chase of Lyon defender Marcelo

West Ham United are showing short-term vision in the transfer market by targeting a swoop for Marcelo ahead of the Olympique Lyonnais defender becoming a free agent in 2021.

What’s the word?

According to The Sun, the Irons will have the opportunity to bring Marcelo to the London Stadium at the end of the season with the 33-year-old desperate to play in the Premier League.

The Hammers came close to signing the Brazilian in January for £20million, but saw the deal fall through before he went on to provide a pivotal role in Lyon’s path to the Champions League semi-final.

A number of clubs are said to be monitoring Marcelo’s situation at the Groupama Stadium with his £53,000-per-week contract entering its final six months, though sources close to the player are alleged to see West Ham as a “great opportunity” following the negotiations held last winter.

Marcelo would like to join a Premier League side to round out a world tour that has seen the centre-back play in Brazil, Poland, Holland, Germany and Turkey before joining Lyon in 2017, where has overcome great adversity.

The former U20 international told his Lyon teammates that he wished to quit the club last December amid fears for his and his family’s safety, after supporters clashed with players over a provocative banner which featured references to donkeys.

West Ham had held a long-standing interest in Marcelo before the incident, with reports dating back to Manuel Pellegrini’s first window in charge claiming Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas had blocked an approach.

Short-term vision

West Ham striving to sign Marcelo three-years on from Aulas initially stopping a deal from going through would only serve to see David Sullivan display short-term vision for an area in David Moyes’ side that would benefit from younger legs.

Marcelo would no doubt bring quality to the London Stadium, having recorded 1.5 successful tackles, 3.6 clearances, 1.6 interceptions and 5.4 duels won per Ligue 1 appearance this season, per SofaScore, but it would remain to be seen how long he would be able to maintain that level in England.

The Brazilian turns 34 in May and would instantly become one of the eldest members of the Irons dressing room, where only goalkeepers Lukasz Fabianski (35) and David Martin (34) are notably older.

Angelo Ogbonna, 32, is the eldest among Moyes’ current defenders and will soon need replacing with a long-term option, with Issa Diop, 23, as far from the first-team picture as he has ever been under the Hammers boss.

Sullivan would be far better served looking to spend his cash on a central defender who would slot between Diop and Fabian Balbuena, 29, in the age chart and offer competition for the pair plus Ogbonna and Aaron Cresswell, 31, than someone who may only prove beneficial for a season at best.

AND in other news, West Ham have been dealt a massive blow in pursuit of the January answer to David Moyes’ “worst nightmare”.

Sunderland’s predicted XI to face AFC Wimbledon in League One

Is this the start of a stunning turnaround?

If you told Sunderland supporters that within a week of Lee Johnson walking through the door they’d score four unanswered goals, they’d have laughed in your face.

Although Johnson tasted defeat in his first game against Wigan, they bounced back in devastating fashion to utterly demolish Lincoln 4-0 last weekend.

All of a sudden, there is fresh positivity surrounding the Black Cats, something that has been far too infrequent over the last five or so years.

A clash against 14th place Wimbledon on Tuesday will be an interesting one and it is unlikely Johnson will make too many changes considering the previous result.

That being said, we’re tipping him to make one this evening.

The only change from Saturday’s win over the Imps is Aiden McGeady dropping out. The Irishman still hasn’t played a great deal of football since being drafted back into the senior side and like he was at Oldham, could be rested.

The tricky 5 ft 11 winger claimed an assist against Lincoln but so did Chris Maguire when Sunderland beat Oldham in the Papa John’s trophy last week.

Consequently, Maguire gets another run-out and an opportunity to prove himself. Johnson also has a big decision to make on Jack Diamond, someone we think should get the nod again.

He has been superb since the new head coach walked through the door and ran Lincoln ragged last time out, scoring and completing two dribbles.

Denver Hume, Luke O’Nien and Lynden Gooch are all still injured so it’s Callum McFadzean who starts once again on the left-hand side of the defence.

The midfield looked sturdy on Saturday so the usual trio of Josh Scowen, Grant Leadbitter and Max Power all start from the off.

Rangers have discovered true gem in James Tavernier, who has drawn comparisons with Steven Gerrard

It’s hard to believe it’s been five years since James Tavernier first set foot inside the Ibrox Stadium. Three years since he first arrived at Glasgow Rangers he was handed the captaincy by Steven Gerrard, marking the occasion by scoring in the 2-0 win over FK Shkupi in the Europa League in 2018.

Gerrard knows a thing or two about what it takes to be a great captain, with his unwavering loyalty and ability to deliver when it mattered the most some of his most defining traits during his time at Liverpool.

Writing in The Daily Mail, as quoted by The Glasgow Times, Brian Laudrup compared the skipper to the manager. He said: “How would you sum up Steven Gerrard’s mentality as a player? Relentless seems like a good word.

“You want to see relentless? Look at James Tavernier in action this season. He is perpetual motion in games always running, always closing down space, always trying to ask questions of the opposition.

“When the camera pans to him in matches, you can also see Tavernier making demands of his teammates. Keep going. We need more. The same was coming from Gerrard, who didn’t even look happy when Rangers went 3-0 up after 19 minutes.”

In Tavernier, the Gers have the archetypal full-back of the modern game, a player known as much for his ability as his physicality. Former Ibrox boss Mark Warburton signed him from Wigan Athletic in 2015 for an undisclosed fee, believed to be somewhere in the region of £225k. He has seemed highly suited to Gerrard since he first took charge of Ibrox in terms of his character, personality, professionalism and flexibility.

As the old adage goes, attack is the best form of defence, as the 29-year-old is already the Scottish Premiership’s top scorer this term, having scored eight goals and supplied six assists in the league so far this season, but that’s not all he has to offer.

Gerrard has arguably transformed Rangers into a side that is known for its’ aggressive, attacking, possession-based brand of football. Tavernier’s role as an attacking right-back has seen him bomb up and down the wings with Borna Barisic on the opposite flank, pinging in crosses left and right for the likes of Alfredo Morelos, Jermain Defoe and more recently Kemar Roofe.

At the beginning of his career at the club, he was criticised for his poor defensive performances, but he has steadily improved over the years. Per SofaScore, he is averaging 2.1 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 1.2 clearances per game in the Premiership so far this season. By comparison, even Connor Goldson is only managing 1.1 tackles per league game, as per SofaScore.

Whilst the focus is very much on his “outrageous” attacking heroics at the moment, his contributions at the back should not be forgotten about.

AND in other news, Glasgow Rangers must give Connor Goldson a bumper new deal in Nikola Katic’s absence…

Yannick Bolasie: Warnock confirms Middlesbrough interest in Everton outcast

Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock has confirmed his Championship side intend to revive their transfer interest in Everton outcast Yannick Bolasie in the upcoming January window.

What’s the word?

Warnock, via quotes by The Northern Echo, has admitted Boro remain interested in a potential deal to lure Bolasie to the Riverside Stadium, having fallen short of signing the DR Congo international this summer when negotiations with Everton broke down at the eleventh hour.

The North East outfit had hoped to sign Bolasie after he was deemed surplus to requirements at Goodison Park by Carlo Ancelotti, with the Italian open to the fact he saw no role for the 31-year-old to play in the Toffees’ Premier League squad.

Bolasie’s proposed move to Middlesbrough collapsed on Deadline Day through a serious of issues, one of which Warnock suggested was the former Crystal Palace forward having said he was “partly to blame” due to problems with Everton that they could not overcome.

Bolasie, who Everton paid £25million to sign in 2016, was disappointed to have seen his proposed move collapse, and is yet to play any senior football this term after being omitted from Ancelotti’s Premier League squad.

But Warnock has not ruled out reviving efforts to sign the 2021-free agent in January, stating when asked if Boro will look to sign Bolasie and West Brom’s Kamil Grosicki: “Absolutely, I’d have those two tomorrow. And a few others! They’re the type of players I think would benefit from coming with us.”

Brands must act

Bolasie will have six-months remaining on his £75,000-per-week contract come January, which likely held up Middlesbrough’s hope of a deal this summer as Patrick Roberts is currently the Championship side’s top-earner on a £39,000-p/w deal.

If Everton are to offload the outcast forward to Boro, then Director of Football Marcel Brands will have to act in a similar manner to how the Dutchman dealt with Sandro Ramirez and Shani Tarashaj’s situations by agreeing to mutually terminate their contracts earlier this year, likely with undisclosed compensation packages.

Boro also present Everton’s best chance of finding a suitor for Bolasie given Warnock’s on-the-record appreciation of the player, which goes back to the forward’s time with Crystal Palace when they worked together at Selhurst Park.

Warnock lauded Bolasie for his unpredictable nature following his goal away to Everton which sealed a 3-2 win over Roberto Martinez’s side, noting via quotes by ESPN: “I’ve seen Yannick for a long time now and he always contributes and is a threat.

“The problem with him is he doesn’t know what he’s going to do next, so the defenders have got no chance. He was very positive today and he covered a lot of ground.”

Everton will be hoping that the only ground he covers come the New Year is by heading to the North East, as his future is far from at Goodison Park.

AND in other news, Everton have a red carpet walk to sign an £18m target who “every coach wants to have”.

Manchester United: Jadon Sancho’s potential move to Old Trafford ‘needs time’ according to Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United may be hit by a ‘surprise’ in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho this summer, according to reports.Â

German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung claimed, as cited by The Daily Star, that Borussia Dortmund believe they can force Man United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to cave into their demands by paying £110m forÂthe 11-cap England international.

While Woodward has made it clear that he will not pay over the odds for the right winger, Dortmund are confident he will surprise them by meeting their asking price.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made the 20-year-old his top target in the summer but both clubs remain far apart in their valuations, even though he has apparently agreed personal terms with the Red Devils.

Dortmund have also issued a deadline of August 10 to sort out a deal for Sancho before the Bundesliga challengers return to pre-season training, and it seems as though time has almost run out.

However, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that both clubs remain locked in negotiations, which “needs time” to find satisfactory solutions.

The Italian transfer guru added that the Englishman is willing to wait and see what will happen, admitting that he would love to join the Red Devils in the summer.

Despite conflicting reports suggesting otherwise, it appears nothing much has changed as they are still trying to figure out a suitable fee. Daniel Geey noted that, as transfers get more complicated, deals can take a significant amount of time to sort out the finer details.

Sancho’s potential move to Old Trafford is not an easy process by any stretch of the imagination, as discussions over fees, employment contract, image rights and third-party investments are most likely taking place behind closed doors.

With so much work to get through, it is hardly surprising that the two sides are yet to reach an agreement. Put simply, fans simply have no other choice but to stay patient, as there are bound to be more developments in the weeks ahead.

Liverpool fans blast Neco Williams’ display against Newcastle

In their final Premier League game of the season, Liverpool ran out 3-1 winners against Newcastle after falling behind to an early strike.

Jurgen Klopp rung the changes for the clash at St James’ Park, with Neco Williams one of the players coming into the starting line-up.

But despite being given the opportunity to impress, and potentially even show why he’s a more than capable deputy for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Williams struggled massively.

As per Sofascore, he lost possession 14 times over the course of the game, won just three of his nine total duels, and made only one tackle.

And after seeing his disappointing performance, Liverpool fans took to Twitter to share their reactions.

A couple of Liverpool fans suggested that Williams isn’t at the standard Liverpool need, with one supporter claiming that he “looks so out of his depth”.

Having clinched the league title a couple of weeks ago, the Reds’ motivation for their final few games would understandably have taken a dip.

But for more fringe players like Williams, there was a real chance to stamp their mark, and provide Klopp with some food for thought ahead of next season.

Instead, Williams failed to grasp his chance, and the gap between him and fellow right-back Alexander-Arnold really told.

Aston Villa fans drooled over Orjan Nyland’s performance against Liverpool

Aston Villa’s eventual 5-0 scoreline against Liverpool can be seen as fairly deceiving, as it implies that the home side was comfortable throughout the evening’s proceedings.

That sense is added to even further when it is considered that Dean Smith’s side was 3-0 up and out of sight by half time.

Watch Villa vs Norwich Live and Free with Amazon Prime on Boxing Day

However, things could have looked very different in the Carabao Cup quarter-final if it wasn’t for Orjan Nyland.

The Norwegian stopper made a total of eight saves during the match, which included those from a strong Harvey Elliott effort and a long-range strike from Tony Gallacher.

This has left plenty of Villa fans impressed by the 29-year-old’s showing, after SofaScore named him as their Man of the Match with a rating of 9.1.

It seems as though the supporters have agreed with that judgement, as one stated he was “Man of the Match for me”.

It can be suggested that Nyland’s status at the club makes this showing come across as even more impressive.

Since signing for the club in the summer of 2018, he has played 25 games, though only two of those have come this campaign, as he has dropped behind Tom Heaton and Jed Steer to become third-choice.

Red Herring or Real Hero: Only hardcore Villa fans will get all of them right….

One fan admitted “I’ve slated this guy many times”, but there were definitely no complaints this time around.

In other news, Villa fans were buzzing about their 23-year-old’s big moment against Liverpool.
