Jamaica, Guyana, Leewards, Trinidad & Tobago are Busta semi-finalists

Guyana ensured their entry into the semi-finals of the 2002 Busta Cupwith a comprehensive innings and 42-run win over Leeward Islands athome. But their opponents, though picking up no points from theencounter, made it to the semi-finals themselves on the strength oftheir previous performances.Put in to bat, Guyana, bolstered by the return of ShivnarineChanderpaul and Carl Hooper, notched up a mammoth 442 in their firstinnings. Lennox Cush and Chanderpaul put on 253 runs for the thirdwicket, with Cush making 154 and Chanderpaul 140. The partnershipformed the foundation of a strong batting performance that included 54from Neil McGarrell.Mahendra Nagamootoo, relinquishing his captaincy role to Hooper, continued his fine performance with the ball, taking 6-71 in Leewards’reply. Only Fabian Adams at the top of the order and Runako Mortoncould even cross 50, and Leewards were bowled out for 237 in 80.2overs.Guyana afforded their opponents little respite after enforcing thefollow-on. Although Adams made yet another fifty, Leewards were bowledout for 163 in 62.5 overs. Nagamootoo took four more in this innings, but his 10-wicket match-haul was not enough to prevent the Man of theMatch award from going to Cush. McGarrell also took four wicketsLeewards’ second innings. At Trinidad, the hosts drew their match with Windward Islands, pickingup six points to Windwards’ three. Batting first, Trinidad & Tobagomade 380, a total comprised largely of Dwayne Bravo’s 122 and skipperRichard Smith’s 72. Windward Islands, however, replied positively, with Junior Murray hitting 105. Batting first, the hosts put up 368, with Wavell Hindsscoring 78, Ricardo Powell 86, and Gareth Breese 72.For Bangladesh ‘A,’ Hannan Sarkar at the top of the order hit 55 andAkram Khan a well-made 46, but none of the other batsmen could makeany significant score, and the visitors were bowled out for 166 in 70overs. TBest took 5-37 in the West Indies ‘B’ second innings, but the Man ofthe Match award went to Ryan Hinds for top-scoring in the firstinnings.

Pompey set to miss out on Stockley

A major update has emerged on Preston striker Jayden Stockley, one which will impact Portsmouth’s transfer plans this summer.

What’s the talk?

According to Hampshire Live, Portsmouth are set to miss out on a deal to sign Preston North End striker Jayden Stockley this summer. Pompey had agreed a fee with Preston for Stockley, but League One rivals Charlton are now the favourites to land his signature as that is the player’s preferred destination.

The report claims that Portsmouth manager Danny Cowley was a keen admirer of Stockley and was eager to add him to his squad ahead of next season. Pompey are not the only League One team to be hit by this blow, as Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland and Ipswich have also been named being interested in Stockley.

Charlton owner Thomas Sandgaard lavished praise on the “prolific” forward upon his arrival at The Valley in January. He told London News Online:

“It’s great we have been able to bring in another prolific striker to the club. Jayden has shown he can score goals and gives us more options going forwards.

“Interest in Jayden was high, so I am delighted we have been able to bring him to Charlton. We have a strikeforce that will be the envy of many teams in our division, so I’m looking forward to seeing them in action.”

Cowley will be devastated

Portsmouth head coach Cowley will be devastated by this update. It had appeared as though Portsmouth were on course to win the race for Stockley, due to a prior report from Hampshire Live, but now, they have been dealt a cruel blow with Charlton pushing past them to snap him up.

After agreeing a fee with Preston, they will now watch Stockley join one of their League One rivals and potentially help them get promoted to the Championship next season if all goes well for Nigel Adkins.

The English dynamo was directly involved in 10 goals for Charlton in League One. He managed eight goals and two assists in 20 starts for the Addicks and was previously prolific for Exeter in the Football League, scoring an impressive 49 goals in 98 games whilst also providing seven assists. This shows that he has a proven track record of performing in the EFL and that he could have been an added goal threat for Cowley’s team, which is why the Pompey boss was keen to sign him from Preston.

Goalscoring is not his only strength as a striker. Stockley’s target man play for Charlton was exceptional last season as he averaged 9.8 aerial battles won per game. He was also dispossessed just 0.8 times per game, which shows that he was able to hold on to the ball well without defenders taking it off him – offering a valuable outlet for teams who need to clear the ball away and get up the pitch.

Cowley will be devastated that he has missed out on a deal for Stockley at the last minute, given how good a player he’s proven to be at the League One level.

Haryana turn the tables on Rest of India

Staff Reporter10-Feb-2001After conceding a first innings lead of 63 runs, Haryana fought backcommendably to defeat Rest of India by 81 runs to win the MAChidambaram (under-19) Trophy on the fourth and final day at theMaharaja Aggarsain Stadium in Rohtak on Saturday.Resuming their second innings at 247 for seven, Haryana were all outfor 284 after 40 minutes play in the morning. Kiran Adhav was the mostsuccessful bowler with five for 77.Rest of India had to get 222 runs for victory. But after the openingpair put on 29, they lost three wickets at that score and neverrecovered. At lunch, Rest of India were 68 for five and though skipperKashinath Khadkikar put up some fight with a defiant 30 off 75 ballswith five hits to the ropes, it was pretty much a hopeless task as thewickets fell steadily. Nitin Aggarwal (4 for 41) and Amit Mishra (4for 50) caused almost all the damage.

MCFC missed out on signing Harry Maguire

In a recent interview, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire admitted that he chose a move to Old Trafford over a switch to the Etihad Stadium in 2019, despite receiving a personal phone call from Pep Guardiola.

The England international completed an £80m move from Leicester City to Manchester United in 2019 but could have very easily ended up with the Citizens.

When speaking to Gary Neville for The Overlap, the centre-back revealed: “I grew up watching Manchester United, no disrespect to Manchester City… so I always had my heart set on this club.

“I spoke to Pep and obviously the football they play and what he’s done for the club… (I have) great respect for him and what he’s done for football, but my heart was set.”

Since joining United, the 28-year-old has become club captain and has gone on to make 107 appearances for the Red Devils, contributing five goals and five assists.

Whilst he has come under a lot of criticism at times, his performances this season were a key factor in United finishing second behind City, and their drop-off in form in recent fixtures in his absence emphasises just how important he is to Solskjaer’s side.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

In 34 Premier League appearances in 2020/21, the centre-back contributed two goals and one assist, earning an impressive 7.04 average rating from WhoScored, which is higher than the average ratings of Man City centre-back duo Ruben Dias (6.91) and John Stones (7.03).

Guardiola is clearly a big fan of Maguire, having called him to try and convince him to join the Spaniard at the Etihad, whilst the 50-year-old also sung his praises earlier in the season, dubbing him “one of the best central defenders in the world.”

Therefore, whilst Maguire claims that he had his heart set on joining United, it is a shame that City couldn’t complete a deal for the £36m-rated defender, as he could have been an excellent addition at the Etihad.

Spurs icon urges Bale to prove worth

Former Tottenham Hotspur ace Graham Roberts has told Football FanCast that Gareth Bale needs to prove himself for the remainder of the season if he is to earn a stay at the club.

Bale struggled for minutes under manager Jose Mourinho, making just six starts in the Premier League. He is valued at £18m by Transfermarkt.

He was restored to the team by interim head coach Ryan Mason against Southampton and scored in the 2-1 win, before netting a hat-trick in Spurs’ 4-0 home thrashing of Sheffield United.

But he was on the bench against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final as Spurs lost 1-0, and Roberts thinks that he now has a bigger opportunity to seal another move this summer.

It has been widely reported that Spurs have an option to extend his loan stay at the club, and Roberts thinks that the Wales international now has a handful of games to prove himself.

Spurs face Leeds United, Wolves, Aston Villa and Leicester City before the end of the season as they bid to force their way back into contention to qualify for Europe.

Speaking to FFC, Roberts was asked if Bale will stay and said: “I would think there’s now half a chance. But I think Gareth now has to prove himself in the next few games.

“If not, the club are not going to pay £300,000, £250,000 a week to him, when you’re sitting on the bench. You’ve got to be out on that pitch and hopefully he’s over all of his injuries now.”

Emerson looks like a Brands-type signing

Former Everton defender Michael Ball has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that Real Betis right-back Emerson is the sort of player he can see his old side and Marcel Brands targeting this summer.

The 22-year-old, who is currently on loan at the Benito Villamarin from Barcelona, was heavily linked with the Merseyside club last year.

Max Aarons was thought to be high on Everton’s list in their search for a long-term successor to Seamus Coleman, but it was recently reported by Fabrizio Romano that they have pulled out of the race to sign the Norwich City player.

It leaves manager Carlo Ancelotti and director of football Brands needing to look elsewhere. For Ball, that could mean turning to Emerson, who he believes fits the necessary criteria for the latter.

Speaking exclusively to FFC about the Brazilian full-back, the ex-Everton player said:

“Emerson, for Real Betis, a Brazilian. Everton have got a lot of Brazilians at the football club. Whether that’s a link, I’m not too sure. It’s a position I think would be a priority for the club.

“Moving forward for the next couple of years, we need to sort of filter Seamus out and bring the next generation through.

“[Emerson’s] got the potential and it’s the right fit for a Marcel Brands type of signing. Young, got resale value in the future, but also got the quality to make an impact straight away.”

Coleman has been a great servant for Everton over the years, but turning 33 this year, the Toffees probably do need to start thinking about a succession plan – which could come in the form of Emerson.

Predicted Man City XI vs Tottenham Hotspur

Manchester City can secure their first piece of silverware this season as they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley on Sunday.

City have an excellent record in the competition since Guardiola’s arrival, having now won it three seasons in a row, and the Citizens should be confident against a side whose last trophy came in 2008.

There will be no repeat of Guardiola’s rivalry with Jose Mourinho on Sunday however, as the North London club sacked the Portuguese manager earlier this week, meaning 29-year-old Ryan Mason will be in charge for the game at Wembley.

Whilst City have a huge game against PSG to come on Wednesday next week, Guardiola should try and avoid the same mistake he made against Chelsea in the FA Cup, where resting numerous first-team players resulted in a disjointed display.

Here’s how Football FanCast expects the former Barcelona boss to line his side up against Spurs, with three changes from the team that started in the midweek win against Aston Villa…

Although Zack Steffen has featured earlier in the competition, he was arguably at fault for Chelsea’s goal in the FA Cup recently, so Ederson should start in goal.

There are two changes in defence, as Joao Cancelo replaces Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back, whilst Aymeric Laporte comes in for John Stones, who is suspended after his reckless challenge at Villa earned him a straight red card.

In midfield, Kevin De Bruyne returns from injury to start alongside Ilkay Gundogan and Rodri, which sees Bernardo Silva pushed further forward to feature as a false nine.

He is supported by Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez on the wings, meaning that the “brilliant” £54m-rated Gabriel Jesus is relegated to the bench.
