Tottenham’s Serge Aurier: Erratic, divisive and destined to be a Mourinho favourite

As illustrated on FFC last month Tottenham Hotspur supporters don’t overly rate nor trust Serge Aurier.

This season alone the Ivorian has needlessly seen red against Southampton before committing to a clumsy challenge on Sadio Mane at Anfield a few weeks later that decided matters there. Devoid of logic and utterly rash that last one still astounds in retrospect.

In October former Spurs star Jermain Jenas even went as far as to state that the 26-year-old right-back should never put on the white shirt again following a pitiful performance against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

In his brutal critique Jenas identified Aurier’s poor positional sense while elsewhere another ex-Tottenham player Alan Hutton has lambasted Aurier’s decision making and ill-discipline. On that latter point it should be noted that the £23m signing from PSG managed to get sent off on his league debut in 2017, immediately highlighting one of his key flaws.

It cannot be said, however, that Spurs were not forewarned. In Ligue 1 the defender was infamously controversial and a regular inhabitant of the back pages, directing obscenities towards PSG coach Laurent Blanc and also towards a referee. In 2016 he was sentenced to two months in jail for assaulting a police officer. Ivorian team-mate Kolo Toure summed up the player on the pitch and the man off it by succinctly saying this: “It’s a lack of maturity, quite simply.”

All of the above combined has led many Spurs fans to assume – perhaps more in hope than reason – that Serge Aurier’s days are numbered now that Jose Mourinho has taken the reins. The Portuguese scowler is after all hardly one to suffer fools gladly.

Of the tweets above the latter is pertinent to this discussion and hardly unique as several other examples can be found online of fans comparing the presumed drumming out of Aurier to Mourinho’s treatment of Luke Shaw at Manchester United.

Yet Shaw and Aurier are very different personalities and principally Mourinho’s problem with the Old Trafford left-back stemmed from a perception – whether accurate or erroneous – of a lack of ‘courage’ and inability to ‘compete’. Shaw’s injury record was additionally a source of frustration and typical of the manager’s thinking this suggested a poor attitude to boot.

For all of his evident shortcomings Aurier, who earns £70k-per-week at Spurs, cannot be accused of having insufficient attitude – if anything he has too much of it – while his competitive streak is blatant, if often misjudged. Indeed when looking back through Jose Mourinho’s successful teams of yesteryear they are resplendent in precisely the kind of headstrong individuals that Aurier would get on very well with, and crucially several of these fractious types have stationed his back-line. Marco Materazzi anyone?

There is certainly no questioning Aurier’s innate talent – you simply don’t make it to three CAF Team of the Years or two Ligue 1 Team of the Years without possessing elite qualities – and though his stint in England has clearly not been a qualified success, to this point there is no reason at all to believe that under new guidance that cannot change.

It is understandable that right now people are speculating on which Spurs players might be heading for the exit door with a ruthless new boss incoming. It is also understandable that Aurier is among the names being mentioned.

Yet don’t discount the possibility of the reverse proving to be true and the Ivorian establishing himself as a favourite under the Portuguese boss.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk speaks out on their recent EFL charge

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk has spoken about their recent EFL charge for the first time this week as the side prepare for Saturday’s Championship outing.

What’s he said?

The Owls face league leaders West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns as they look to get back into playoff contention having slipped to eighth in the league, some three points from the top six.

But last week, the club were charged for financial misconduct following the £60m sale of their Hillsborough stadium to owner Dejphon Chansiri.

In his pre-match press conference, the 40-year-old was asked about the situation, and he said:

“In terms of myself, the staff, the players, we have to control what we can which is the football and producing performances. The club will work with the EFL on those issues and we have to focus on our jobs.

“My job and duty is to focus on football. Nothing can stop us working hard every day on the training pitch. We all have to stick together, more than ever, it’s key that we all overcome every hurdle thrown at us.”

Worrying times ahead?

This level of uncertainty will surely have some sort of impact on the players as they have no solid idea on whether or not their season will be scuppered because of this, if it is, you’d imagine motivation levels would drop unless Monk has some sort of superpowers to stop that from happening.

According to one football finance expert, the Owls are likely to face a 12-point penalty at the very least while another transfer embargo or even expulsion can’t be thrown out of the occasion until the EFL say otherwise.

Such repercussions would almost certainly derail their season as if a deduction was taken right now, Wednesday would go from playoff contenders to being in a relegation dogfight.

But what Monk says is right, there’s nothing he can do other than try to secure results on the pitch because, at the end of the day, it was Chansiri’s decision that has seen the club fall into this worrying situation.

Meanwhile, this is how Garry Monk can get the best out of one failing Wednesday favourite…

Arsenal fans react to Martin Keown blaming Unai Emery for Granit Xhaka boos

Loads of Arsenal fans have been reacting on social media after Martin Keown claimed in his column for the Daily Mail that Unai Emery was as much to blame for Granit Xhaka being booed as anyone else.

The former Gunners ace noted that Sunday’s events seen as the North London side drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace was not the first instance of fans booing Xhaka, as jeers rang around the Emirates in September when the 27-year-old was taken off against Aston Villa.

Five days after that Premier League clash Arsenal went on to win without the Switzerland international on the field, Emery named Xhaka as the Gunners’ new captain following Laurent Koscielny’s summer departure.

Xhaka was handed the armband after Emery held a secret ballot among the Arsenal dressing room, in which the former Borussia Monchengladbach man is a hugely popular figure.

Keown has pointed to this as Emery turning up the heat on an already hostile atmosphere for Xhaka, that makes the Spanish tactician as much to blame for supporters reacting angrily on Sunday.

“Emery is as much to blame as anyone,” Keown noted. “If you let the players pick their skipper, then it becomes a popularity contest and that is not what leadership is about.

“I’ve never had a manager who decided the captaincy that way and, for me, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is still the safer bet.”

Young forward Bukayo Saka replaced Xhaka in the 61st-minute on Sunday as Arsenal searched for a go-ahead goal at home to Palace, with fans reacting with jeers that soon turned to boos as the 27-year-old cupped his ear.

Xhaka responded to the boos by appearing to swear at supporters, before throwing the captain’s armband to the floor and storming off down the tunnel.

Here are some of the reactions shared to Keown’s verdict…

Jacob and Aaron Ramsey could continue Villa’s brotherly trend

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In The Pipeline series, which takes a look at some of the most promising young talent either linked with clubs or emerging from their academies…

Aston Villa have been faced with a bit of a lull spell as the international break has taken over for the best part of two weeks, so it seems like an ideal time to take a dip into the goings-on within the club itself.

Their academy has several promising youngsters in its ranks with much of them being loaned out this season as seen with Callum O’Hare at Coventry City, Rushian Hepburn-Murphy at Tranmere Rovers and Jake Doyle-Hayes at Cheltenham Town.

Those that remain could be lucky enough to feature in their Carabao Cup campaign as Dean Smith’s men eased into the fourth round with a 3-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.

Jacob Ramsey was one player who managed to earn some game time in that match, someone Football FanCast have previously tipped for greatness.

The England U19 international has a knack for scoring goals from midfield, bagging 16 in 37 appearances for the U18s, before surpassing his age group to feature for the U23s, where he has already scored three goals in six matches in the Premier League 2 this term.

But he also has two brothers in the academy ranks with Aaron being named in the Guardian’s ‘Next Generation 2019’ list, which is their take on the best young players at every Premier League club born between September 2002 and August 2003.

Aston Villa’s summer signings’ performances so far this season are rated in the video below…

He is described as a ‘technically gifted attacking midfielder’ who has ‘the ability and vision to create chances for others.’

These two could well emulate past links to brothers that have played in the claret and blue, like Bruce and Neil Rioch in the early 1970s, or Stefan and Luke Moore in the early 2000s.

Craig and Gary Gardner are another pair to play for the club, but they both featured at different times during their career.

The Ramsey’s are certainly an exciting duo and could well be next in line if they continue to progress at this rate.

England fans slam Raheem Sterling after underwhelming performance

After enjoying a remarkably productive campaign, many pundits began to publicly insist Raheem Sterling could consider himself amongst the world’s best players.

The Manchester City star netted 25 goals and provided a further 18 assists for Pep Guardiola’s side last year, and the plaudits were understandably flooding his way. Former West Ham man Trevor Sinclair even insisted the 24-year-old is right up there with the likes of Cristiano Ronalo and Lionel Messi. Steady on, Trevor.

Whilst the forward has started off the current campaign in fine fashion too with nine goals to his name, the mark of a truly great player is consistency on a week-to-week basis. And, after a particularly disappointing display for England on Friday night, those outlandish claims comparing him to some of the greatest seems like a stretch too far.

After winning the penalty for the Three Lions’ opening goal, Sterling was virtually anonymous for Gareth Southgate’s side. The winger registered no shots on goal whatsoever, and ended up with a 6.4 match rating on SofaScore – the joint-second lowest of any player for the visitors.

Having seen his display, England fans flooded to Twitter to share their thoughts on the City star.

Many supporters insisted Sterling is simply “overrated”, whilst one fan in particular also took aim at his “appalling” decision-making too..

Leicester’s Ricardo Pereira impresses again to throw name into elite conversation

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Leicester have now picked up two points from their opening matches in the Premier League after they drew with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

Wilfred Ndidi was the villain-turned-hero after his first-half defensive blunder allowed young star Mason Mount to open the scoring on his home debut before atoning for his error by heading home a James Maddison corner.

It was Maddison who could have won it for the Foxes with less than 20 minutes left on the clock after he drilled a close-range effort well over the bar.

Last season’s Player of the Year, Ricardo Pereira, continued his rich vein of form with an 8.02 match rating which was only bettered by Chelsea’s goalscorer.

On the Chalkboard

It may have only been two games into the new Premier League season but it’s time we discuss Pereira as one of the best in his position in the league.

His performance against the league’s third-placed side last season was ultimately impressive – even if they have an Eden Hazard-shaped void on the flank.

Brendan Rodgers’ new system allows Ayoze Perez to drift in from the right side of attacking midfield, which enables the 25-year-old right-back to have much more of an influence on the game, as seen in his heat map below, courtesy of WhoScored.

He recorded a team-high 72 passes against Chelsea with only Caglar Soyuncu anywhere near at 66. He also managed more dribbles than any other player, including Maddison, with seven in the game.

Defensively he was ace too, recording a game-high nine tackles attempted with 88.8% of them being successful – on top of five clearances, three interceptions and three blocks.

This one game is just a microcosm of his entire time at Leicester since joining from Porto. Last season he picked up four man of the match awards, two goals and six assists, averaging a rating of 7.34.

Check out all the live reaction to Chelsea 1-1 Leicester in the video below…

And when you look at him in comparison to PFA Team of the Year right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and Manchester City’s Kyle Walker, you wonder why he isn’t widely regarded as one of the top full backs in English football.

Pereira has averaged 6.5 tackles across two Premier League games whereas the Reds’ star is averaging a lowly 0.5 with Walker in between the two at 1.5 tackles per game, though it must be considered that Leicester typically spend more time defending than the likes of City and Liverpool.

In attack, only Alexander-Arnold rates better for key passes per game at 2.5, while the Portugal international on top for dribbles at 4.5 per game.

Walker averages 2 key passes per game and just 2 dribbles per game.

Pereira must be close to being in the same bracket now.

Manchester United must end Paul Pogba transfer drama as soon as possible

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to ESPN, Real Madrid are “increasingly confident” that they will sign Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba this summer.

What’s the word?

Reports in recent weeks have claimed that the Frenchman could be set for an Old Trafford exit, but the rumours appeared to fade away following suggestions that United’s valuation of the midfielder had put teams off.

Now, ESPN suggest that Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has asked club president Florentino Perez to make another attempt to sign the World Cup winner.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

It adds that although the Red Devils are seemingly holding out for €180m (£161.6m), there is a sense they can come to an agreement.

Too little, too late?

Every day that the Pogba transfer saga rumbles on, the worse it gets for Manchester United – not Real Madrid. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are in a case of limbo over their maverick midfielder, so much so that despite him publicly insisting he wanted a “new challenge” this summer, he has played a prominent part in pre-season.

And who can blame the United boss? Pogba still remains a bona-fide talent, and as Solskjaer himself recently suggested, can be someone the team can be built around. But by being such a potential cornerstone of the side, United’s position on Pogba is setting them up for a mighty fall.

The transfer window deadline for Premier League clubs is on August 8, meaning United’s time to find a worthy replacement is already dwindling. Pogba simply isn’t a ‘squad player’ who can easily be discarded. The potential transfer fee involved makes it a complex deal to execute, and United will certainly be pushed for time to find someone who can fill his shoes.

Whether it’s deciding ‘enough is enough’ and letting him leave, or simply coming out and stating that he will be staying, United must assert their authority and take charge of the situation for their own good; if not, they risk starting the Premier League campaign against Chelsea with a huge dark cloud hovering above them, a cloud that could either be a sulky Frenchman in the middle of the park or a gaping void left by his departure.
