Blackburn join Rotherham in Mullin chase

Rotherham have been dealt with a transfer blow, regarding Cambridge United striker Paul Mullin.

What’s the talk

According to Football League World, Championship side Blackburn Rovers are considering a swoop for Cambridge forward Paul Mullin. Blackburn are concerned about the possible exit of Adam Armstrong this summer and are looking at Mullin as a potential replacement for the former Newcastle man.

The Sun on Sunday (via The 72), reported last month that Rotherham are keen on a deal for Mullin. He is out of contract at the end of this month and Rotherham could attempt to pounce on him to bolster their League One squad.

Last November, Cambridge boss Mark Bonner lavished praise on the “exceptional” forward after he won a Player of the Month award in League Two. He told In Your Area:

“He’s had an outstanding start to the season.

“To be nominated in month one and then win it in month two is a real credit to him. He’s continued that momentum.

“He’ll be the first one to credit players around him for creating opportunities and everything else, but his goal return has been exceptional in the short period that we’ve played so far, and his overall contribution to the games have been excellent.”

Warne will be gutted

Rotherham manager Paul Warne will be gutted by this news as it could lead to his side potentially missing out on a deal for the forward.

Blackburn, of course, play in a higher division than Rotherham and could offer him the chance to jump up to the Championship instead of playing in League One with Cambridge or Rotherham. Therefore, Rovers could be a more attractive prospect in comparison to the Millers and their interest in Mullin may dampen the chances of Warne being able to call upon him.

The striker position could be crucial for Rotherham this summer with Michael Smith touted with an exit from the club. Bristol City are reportedly keen on Smith and Rotherham are willing to sell him for the right price if a good offer comes in, which will leave a huge gap in Warne’s side.

Smith was Rotherham’s top goalscorer in the Championship with 10 goals and Mullin could be an excellent replacement for him if they are able to bring him to the club.

The £800-per-week beast found the back of the net 32 times in League Two for Cambridge in the season just gone, whilst also providing four assists for his teammates. He proved that he can score at an impressive rate in League Two and that suggests that he could have a good chance of being able to score consistently at League One level.

That said, the jump to the Championship with Blackburn could be a huge test. If Blackburn are seriously interested, though, it would be a huge blow for Rotherham.

Spurs eye huge £30m Lucas Moura upgrade

Tottenham Hotspur have been told exactly how much it’ll cost to land mooted summer transfer target Mikkel Damsgaard…

What’s the word?

“Did you see that Damsgaard goal? I’ll tell you [his] fair price, today at least 30 million but if he scores again he will reach 40,” claimed Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero to Italian newspaper Il Secolo XIX (via Calciomercato).

Spurs have been linked with the 20-year-old gem regularly over the past few months and, just last week, Club Doria 46 reported that their interest was ‘strong’, although the north Londoners face competition from their Premier League rivals West Ham and Leeds.

Moura upgrade?

If the Denmark international continues to excel at Euro 2020, that asking price could genuinely increase, just as his club’s president says.

Damsgaard has emerged as a potential Danish star of the future in the absence of former Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen. His wonderstrike kickstarted a 4-1 rout over Russia to seal their place in the knockout stages of the competition.

The Sampdoria attacker received the ball from current Spurs midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and, on the half-turn, he shifted the ball onto his stronger right foot before curling a phenomenal strike into the top corner.

As per SofaScore, Damsgaard is among the best-performing attackers in the competition right now. He has recorded six successful dribbles, four shots and two key passes, earning a 7.25 average rating on top of his wonder goal.

Considering it was on such a big stage, it was the first real glimpse of the young 5 foot 11 dynamo living up to his hype. It’s no surprise that his former manager Claudio Ranieri, who won the Premier League at Leicester, dubbed him a “child prodigy” with a “big future.”

These performances at Euro 2020 merely build on his impressive domestic form from the 2020/21 campaign, where he registered two goals and four assists, but those numbers do not do his performances justice as the £11.7m-rated Dane proved to be an exciting and versatile talent, displaying immense levels of work rate.

Damsgaard played in no fewer than seven different positions across 37 appearances in all competitions and averaged 1.2 tackles and 1.5 successful dribbles per game in the Italian top flight.

With the future of current Spurs winger Lucas Moura in doubt, the “magical” and “dynamic” gem could well be a perfect long-term upgrade for whoever takes the dugout in north London next season.

Last season, the long-serving Brazilian managed only 1.1 successful dribbles per game, whilst he isn’t as industrious as Damsgaard either, having averaged a lower 1.1 attempted tackles each league outing, as per WhoScored.

Between September and February, the first-choice winger only delivered one goal in the Premier League, which emphasises his inconsistencies in a Spurs shirt.

Fabio Paratici must look to sign Damsgaard now that his asking price has been revealed and, in the process, the north Londoners can move on from the faltering Moura.

AND in other news, Paratici can seal Spurs’ dream Kane replacement in “complete” £36m-rated goal machine…

Game effort brings reward for tireless Hoggard

Hoggard- in the English tradition
Photo Photosport

If there’s one thing that the England cricket system is capable of producing it is fast-medium swing bowlers who know how to make the most of conditions that suit them – and Yorkshireman Matthew Hoggard added himself to the list today.New Zealand-England contests are full of bowlers who have left their marks in such fashion like: Brian Statham, Geoff Arnold, Mike Hendrick, Chris Old, John Lever and more recently Darren Gough to name a few.Hoggard’s haul of seven for 63 to help skittle New Zealand for 147 in the first National Bank Test at Jade Stadium in Christchurch was the fifth best effort by England against New Zealand.Ahead of him were: Derek Underwood (7-32 in 1969), Tony Lock (7-35 in 1958), Phil Tufnell (7-47 in 1991/92) and Lock (7-51 in 1958).His was an impressive demonstration of stamina as he bowled unchanged for 20 overs, broken by stumps last night and lunch after an abbreviated first session in the morning. In that time he had five for 59.Having had Mark Richardson last evening, he added Matt Horne, Daniel Vettori, Lou Vincent and Nathan Astle before he was rested. Then after Andy Caddick took three wickets in five balls, Nasser Hussain hurried Hoggard back into the attack and he responded by taking Craig McMillan and Ian Butler to wrap up the innings and complete 21.1 overs.Hoggard said it was nice to bowl in helpful conditions, especially after toiling so hard in India.”It swings a little more and seems to seam a little more here,” he said. His first hour today was largely fruitless until he picked up Vettori’s wicket.”Daniel Vettori played really well, but we knew when we got the breakthrough we always had a chance of getting the next batsman quickly,” he said. And despite the long spell he had, he said, “It is surprising how tired you don’t get when you are taking wickets.”Like the New Zealand bowlers on the first day he did feel the slowness, and heaviness, of the outfield and he got some cramp towards the end of his spell.Captain Hussain had to take the ball off him to get him to have a break because as Hoggard said, he wasn’t going to give it up.”I have bowled as well before but not taken as many wickets. It is just one performance, I have a few more to put together on this tour.”I just want to step up and keep performing,” he said.

Pundit expects Pep to get Haaland

In an exclusive interview with Transfer Tavern, Paul Stewart, who made 63 appearances for Manchester City, admits he would not be surprised to see his former club sign Erling Haaland this summer if Pep Guardiola wants him.

Haaland’s agent, Mino Raiola, and father, Alf-Inge Haaland, flew to Spain last month to discuss a potential move to Barcelona and Real Madrid but Man City still remain confident they will sign the Borussia Dortmund striker.

Check out the latest Erling Haaland transfer news on the dedicated GMS Erling Haaland Transfer hub

There have been reports suggesting that Raiola wants to make Haaland the first £1 million a week footballer, which could instantly put off a handful of clubs who couldn’t afford that kind of deal.

Speaking on how he wouldn’t be surprised to see City sign Haaland this summer and how they could afford to pay his high wage demands, Stewart told The Transfer Tavern exclusively:

“If he wants £1 million a week then City might pay that but I don’t know what the financial fair play regulations would be on that deal. If Pep wants him he’ll get him.

“There will be a lot of teams after Haaland, and clubs pay that sort of money now because they just pay the market prices so if he’s asking for that much money it wouldn’t surprise me if he gets it somewhere.”

The latest twist has arrived in the last 48 hours as Dortmund’s CEO, Hans-Joachim Watzke, confirmed that Haaland will not be leaving the club this summer, much like the stance they took with Jadon Sancho last year.

Since he joined Dortmund, Haaland has scored an impressive 53 goals in 56 games across all competitions which has made him one of the most sought-after strikers in the world.

Leeds’ predicted line-up to face Burnley

After securing an impressive win against Spurs last weekend, Leeds United return to Premier League action when they take on Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Stuart Dallas, Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo were enough to seal a 3-1 win against the north Londoners and Marcelo Bielsa will be hoping to make it back-to-back wins when his side make the journey to Turf Moor.

With the season winding down, the manager may feel that these last couple of games present him with the perfect opportunity to take a look at some of the club’s best young talent.

While the Leeds boss will be keen to see some of his returning first team stalwarts back in the starting line-up, there may be a chance for one or two academy boys to make their mark.

With that in mind, here is a look at how Leeds might line up when they make the trip to Turf Moor to take on Burnley.

In goal, Illan Meslier will once again keep his place, and while club captain Liam Cooper could be back from injury and suspension respectively, Bielsa may feel that the likes of Pascal Struijk and Diego Llorente deserve to keep their places.

With Gjanni Alioski’s long-term future at Elland Road not yet resolved, and all indications pointing to him leaving the club in the summer, Bielsa may feel that now is the time to look ahead.

Niall Huggins was a part of the successful under-23 side which clinched the Premier League 2 Division 2 title, and the 20-year-old left-back will be hoping to make his full Premier League debut against Burnley – he made a cameo appearance off the bench against Arsenal earlier this year.

Elsewhere, Kalvin Phillips, Rodrigo and Raphinha all came off the bench last week to continue their progress from injury, and they should all now be ready to make a start – that could see both Mateusz Klich and Tyler Roberts dropped to the bench.

Bielsa also confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Joe Gelhardt is out injured, so any hopes of him making an appearance in the first team in the Premier League this season are pretty much over.

With the young striker ruled out, Patrick Bamford will once again lead the line, hoping to pick up where he left off last week after his goal against Spurs.

Predicted XI: Meslier; Ayling, Llorente, Struijk, Huggins; Phillips, Raphinha, Dallas, Rodrigo, Harrison; Bamford.

Meanwhile, Leeds source drops exciting update on club’s transfer plans…
