Tim Paine drove Tasmania to victory in their first home match of the summer as they knocked off the 41 runs they required on the final day for the loss of just one wicket. Paine finished unbeaten on 69 and it was a terrific effort after they had fallen to 6 for 76 on the third afternoon. They began the final day at 6 for 140, chasing 181, and the loss of Brett Geeves for 36, bowled by Shaun Tait in the second over, gave South Australia a glimmer of hope. But Paine was ably supported by the No. 9 Gerard Denton, who took 52 balls for his 9, to earn Tasmania their first win of the campaign.Paine was the only one of Tasmania’s top six to pass 20 in the small chase but he knew the tail could be useful after the last pair Denton and Ben Hilfenhaus compiled a 66-run stand in the first innings. “I had plenty of faith in those blokes,” Paine told after the match.”It was obviously a crucial game for us, our first game at home, and we want to win all games here. As well as losing the first two games, it was critical we got the six points today, so it was a great result.”The loss was a major blow for South Australia, who have struggled in recent seasons and went on an international and interstate recruiting drive during the winter. They have not won any of their first three Sheffield Shield matches this summer.

Hatfield: Aaron Ramsey’s wages prevented Wolves transfer

Journalist Luke Hatfield has told Football FanCast that Aaron Ramsey’s wages would have prevented a move to Wolves during the summer transfer window if they really did want him.

Towards the end of last month, there were some whispers coming out of Italy about the Juventus midfielder potentially joining Wolves.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the two clubs discussed the possibility of a swap deal that would have seen Ruben Neves head the other way.

But with Ramsey on enormous wages, £400,000 a week, according to BBC Sport, Hatfield says it was a non-starter.

“He’s on big wages,” the Express & Star reporter said. “I think regardless of where he goes, he’s probably going to have to face a wage cut. But for Wolves, they probably looked at that and thought he’s a very talented player and he’d do a great job back in the Premier League, but the wages just make it a very, very hard one.”

In the end, it was not the most productive transfer window for Wolves, which may have disappointed some fans.

However, they were able to keep Adama Traore and Neves, who both looked to be heading out of the door at one stage, so it is not all doom and gloom. That could quickly change, though, if Bruno Lage’s men do not start picking up points after failing to take any from their first three Premier League fixtures.

Claudinei completa 50 jogos no comando do Avaí

O retrospecto justifica a sequência.

Celtic: Fans fume at Ajeti vs Ross County

Albian Ajeti’s first-half display against Ross County has angered loads of Celtic fans.

Celtic were looking to return to winning ways after falling to defeat away at arch-rivals Rangers prior to the international break.

Visitors Ross County, meanwhile, were aiming to pull off an upset in Glasgow and land their first victory of the 2021/22 season.

Ajeti led the line for Celtic, with Liel Abada to his right and new signing Jota to his left.

He’d only played seven Scottish Premiership minutes before this fixture, having come on as a substitute in the 6-0 rout of St Mirren.

Ajeti had a chance to put Celtic in front midway through the half after being set through on goal, but he could only direct his shot straight at the goalkeeper.

The Swiss striker actually recorded fewer touches than Hoops ‘keeper Joe Hart and his SofaScore rating of 6.4 is the second-lowest in the team after the opening 45 minutes.

Here’s what fans had to say.

Chilaw Marians deny Army SC

A round-up of the second-round matches of the Premier League Tournament in Sri Lanka

Sa'adi Thawfeeq26-Nov-2008At the Moors Sports Club Ground, Ragama CC thrashed Badureliya Sports Club by an innings-and-37-runs. Badureliya SC, who began the new season by comprehensively beating favourites Nondescripts CC, were shot out for 54 and 194 by Ragama CC, who made 285 in their only innings. The wreckers-in-chief were the fast bowlers, Saliya Saman and Dharshana Gamage, who also starred in the first innings, and Sri Lanka allrounder Kaushalya Weeraratne took six in the second.Sri Lanka Army Sports Club, the newcomers to Tier A this year, muffed their chance of making a winning start. In a thrilling contest, Army SC, without the services of Ajantha Mendis, dismissed Chilaw Marians for 217 to take 12-run lead on the first innings. Their batting, though, fell apart in the second innings. The pace and spin combination of Gayan Wijekoon (6 for 23) and Dinuka Hettiarachchi (match-haul of 10 for 72) bundled out Army SC for 57, leaving their team with 70 to win. The batsmen nearly made a mess of their chase – they were reduced to 50 for 9 – but the last-wicket pair steered them to victory. Seekkuge Prasanna, who formed a lethal spin pairing with Mendis in Army’s Tier B success last season, almost single-handedly took them to victory with nine wickets in the match.Defending champions Sinhalese Sports Club once again had to be content with a draw. Sinhalese SC had Colts Cricket Club following on, but interruptions caused by rain and bad light thwarted their push for a win. Left-arm fast bowler Nuwan Zoysa starred with an all-round performance, top-scoring with 67 in Sinhalese SC’s 378 before taking 5 for 22 as Colts CC were bowled out for 164. The visitors finished the game at 197 for 4.Tillakaratne Dilshan, who was dropped for Sri Lanka’s Zimbabwe tour, scored 112 as Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club raced to the highest total of the season against Tamil Union Cricket. In a weather-curtailed game at the P Saravanamuttu Stadium, Bloomfield made 573 in reply to Tamil Union’s 299. Tamil Union were put in on bowler-friendly conditions, and lost 6 for 102 before lunch on the first day. But Gihan Rupasinghe rescued them with an unbeaten 174-ball 154. Bloomfield then exploited relatively easier batting conditions to secure the first-innings lead.At the Colombo Cricket Club Ground, Nondescripts Cricket Club’s ninth-wicket pair of Tharaka Kottehewa (62 not out) and Kosala Kulasekera (83) ensured they took the honours in the drawn game against Colombo Cricket Club. The duo helped Nondescripts CC recover from 104 for 8 to 254.In Tier B, Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club and Seeduwa Raddoluwa Cricket Club beat the weather to score wins over Burgher Recreation Club and Moratuwa Sports Club. Air Force SC allrounder Suwanji Madanayake’s double of 86 runs and 12 for 70 proved too much for Burgher RC, who succumbed to an innings-and-72-run defeat at Riffle Green. Madanayake’s legbreaks proved unplayable – his 7 for 15 saw Burgher RC dismissed for 45 and he added five more in the second.Seeduwa Raddoluwa CC got their second win in as many games. In a low-scoring match played at De Soysa Stadium, they beat Moratuwa SC by 47 runs. In another game, Saracens Sports Club’s 20-year-old left-hander Geeth Alwis scored his maiden first-class hundred (144) against Sebastianites Cricket and Athletic Club in a drawn contest.Player of the Week – Gihan RupasingheOne of the finest all-round cricketers to emerge from the schools in recent times, Gihan Rupasinghe displayed his potential as a batsman when he scored a career-best 154 not out off 174 balls to lift Tamil Union from a desperate 115 for 7 to a respectable 299 against Bloomfield last weekend. Batting at No. 7, Rupasinghe had only the tail to partner him but he farmed the strike effectively as the last three wickets added 184 runs. Rupasinghe’s heroics exhibited his fighting qualities.”He is an attacking batsman who likes to go for his shots, but hates to get bogged down,” was Tamil Union coach Brendon Kuruppu’s assessment. Rupasinghe, also a legspinner, had a splendid stint at Nalanda College – he was team captain and was chosen Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year in 2006. He impressed in the Sri Lanka Cricket Under-23 tournament last season. He won the Player of the Tournament, taking 43 wickets at 13.20 and 297 runs at 42.42 for Tamil Union.Points tableTier A

Everton: New Doucoure deal predicted

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire suspects that Abdoulaye Doucoure is in line for an Everton contract extension.

The lowdown

The Toffees signed Doucoure from Watford ahead of the 2020/21 season for a fee of just under £20m. He has gone on to play 38 times for the club, scoring four goals and providing six assists (via Transfermarkt).

Carlo Ancelotti, the man who brought him to Goodison Park, hailed him as a ‘complete midfielder’. He is currently thought to be pocketing £75,000 per week, placing him just inside the squad’s top 10.

The latest

Doucoure initially signed a three-year deal when he joined the Blues, meaning Everton would be paying Watford around £6.65m per year. However, if they extend his contract, they will be able to pay the fee in smaller chunks over a longer period.

“We have got people like [Michael] Keane who has just extended his contract,” Maguire told Football Insider. “Every time you extend a contract, you reduce the amortisation cost.

“They have done that with a few, and I suspect we are likely to see it with likes of Doucoure and others as well.”

The verdict

We’ll often hear when a new deal is handed out that a player is being rewarded for their performances, but clearly there are other motivations at play too.

Still, you’d think Everton fans would welcome the news of an extension. Doucoure seemed a coup when they snapped him up, and so he has proved, setting up two of their three goals against Burnley last night.

He should be a starter on Merseyside for a number of years yet.

In other news, Everton are set to revisit this move in January.

Yousuf slams PCB for not standing up to BCCI

Mohammad Yousuf has slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board for being subservient to the Indian board and not raising any objections to the BCCI’s decision to ban the ICL players for life

Mohammad Yousuf, the Pakistan batsman who recently signed up to the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL), has slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for their subservience to the Indian board, particularly in their ongoing policy of life bans on ICL players. Some hope had emerged for Pakistan players involved with the ICL to have their bans lifted after PCB director general Javed Miandad openly questioned the rationale of the ban. He called on all cricket boards to resolve the issue and restore normalcy, especially in Pakistan, which has lost several cricketers to the ICL.”I just say the Pakistan board should take its own independent decision. It should not toe the line of the Indians,” Yousuf said in an interview on a popular show on Geo Super, a local sports channel. “What have they given us? They even refused to tour the country recently.””There is no such ruling from the ICC on ICL players. Tell me are we committing some crime going to play in the league? I say there is nothing to stop the board from lifting the ban on us if it wants to. Javed Miandad is now director general and he should keep his word.”Yousuf, for the second time in as many months, also launched a stinging attack on the current Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik and the selectors for not treating him with enough respect. Yousuf was never considered for the captaincy at any stage and was omitted from Pakistan’s Twenty20 plans. He again called into question Malik’s qualifications for the captaincy.”Tell me on what grounds did they decide I was not fit for Twenty20 cricket? What was the criteria for deciding this?” Yousuf said. “Tell me how did Shoaib Malik deserve to be the captain? How can you make a player a captain who is not certain of a place in the national Test or one-day team.”Ironically, Yousuf is currently ranked No.2 in the ICC Test rankings despite being ineligible to play international cricket and despite Pakistan not playing a single Test last year.
