Eric Dier tipped to regain Spurs form

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Gary Mabbutt has backed Eric Dier to come out the other side following his poor recent form at Tottenham.

Dier has started all but four of Spurs’ Premier League games, but is currently enduring a tricky spell at the heart of the Tottenham defence.

Having conceded a penalty against Chelsea last month, the England defender was then arguably at fault for West Ham’s opener recently, which led to him being dropped and replaced by Toby Alderweireld against Burnley on Sunday, again sitting out the win against Fulham.

Dier had played 90 minutes in each of Spurs’ Europa League ties against Austrian outfit Wolfsberger, so Jose Mourinho might have been resting him ahead of Thursday’s trip to Fulham.

The Tottenham boss doesn’t appear to know his best central defensive pair – with the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon and even Ben Davies all having played there this season.

But the 27-year-old, who reportedly earns £72,000-a-week, has played more Premier League minutes than any other defender this term, and Mabbutt told FFC that he still has faith in Dier. He said:

“I think Eric has shown what a player he can be for both Spurs and for England. And, again, it’s down to the manager to see who he feels is the best on that particular day or occasion for it.

“And then the other player will then come out like Eric did and say’ my confidence is fine’. If it’s not confidence, ‘I made a couple mistakes’. ‘Hey, let’s work on it, lets get back together, and a deal with it’. It’s all about finding a solution, making a plan.

“That’s what a manager has to do, he’s got 26 players in this squad, every single player is different. Everyone needs different things to make them work. But that’s what a manager has to do, he’s got to get inside that player. Every single player, how to get the best out of them. That’s his role. That’s what his role as a manager is.”

Dier is going through one those periods where everything that can go wrong seems to be going wrong.

However, he’s shown previously for both club and country that he’s more than capable of performing at this level, so it’s just about eradicating those mistakes and getting back to his best.

LFC: Fans react to Kabak and Firmino update

Ozan Kabak and Roberto Firmino should both be back in contention for Liverpool’s Champions League round of 16 second leg against RB Leipzig on Wednesday, according to The Athletic’s James Pearce.

The pair were missing on Sunday as Liverpool slumped to a sixth consecutive home defeat against Fulham. However, their injuries were understood to be minor, and Jurgen Klopp should have them available again as he plots a route into the last eight of the competition.

Liverpool’s domestic path to Champions League qualification is narrowing, and so they might have to win the competition to avoid the huge financial blow of missing out on it next season. They carry a 2-0 lead into the second leg, nominally their ‘home’ fixture.

Firmino and Kabak both started the first meeting in Budapest three weeks ago. The struggling Brazilian has yet to score in Europe this season, while Kabak is battling to win over some doubtful Reds fans, as well as his manager, as the club decide whether to exercise their option to buy the on-loan defender.

Rangers look set for McGregor boost

Rangers could be set for a huge boost in the coming weeks after Steven Gerrard revealed (via Daily Record) that the club have tabled a contract offer to Allan McGregor in their hopes of keeping the experienced ‘keeper at Ibrox for another season.

The 39-year-old, who reportedly earns £11,000 per week at Rangers, has been a key player this season, making 23 appearances in the Premiership, in which he has conceded just seven goals and kept a hugely impressive 16 clean sheets.

Despite his age, the former Scotland international seems to be getting better and better, emphasising his class with an almost unbelievable save in the 1-1 draw with Slavia Prague in midweek.

Following the game in the Czech Republic, Gerrard was full of praise for McGregor and revealed the latest in his contract talks, saying:

“I’ve spoken about it before, how much we rate Allan, how much we love him here, how much we want to carry on.

“At the same time, I’ve told you guys I will respect him. He knows what’s on the table. He’s in discussions with the club and from where I’m sitting, I hope we get it over the line and sign him up for another year because he is more than capable.

“I know that on a daily basis by working with him and watching him closely. The decision is going to be down to Allan, not us. Because we certainly want him.”

He also suggested that the save he made in that game was “another world-class save”, which emphasises just how much the manager values his first-choice ‘keeper and how much he wants him to stay for another season at least.

McGregor’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season and, after his impressive performances this term, you would imagine that he wouldn’t be short of suitors if he did decide to leave the Gers this summer.

However, he is clearly held in high regard by Gerrard and would likely be guaranteed Champions League football next season, so hopefully the champions can convince him to stay and replicate his performances from this season in the next campaign.

Liverpool should swoop for Jamal Musiala

Liverpool were recently linked with a move for 17-year-old Bayern Munich wonderkid Jamal Musiala, and after his latest superb display in the Champions League win against Lazio, the Reds should increase their interest in him, in the hopes that he could be persuaded by a move to Anfield.

The former Chelsea youngster became the youngest Englishman to score in the Champions League as he curled home Bayern’s second goal in the 4-1 win, which also saw him become the Bundesliga side’s youngest ever scorer in the competition.

Despite being a few days away from his 18th birthday, Musiala has established himself as a regular in Hans-Dieter Flick’s side this season and plays with a maturity way beyond his years, as he showed great composure to place the ball past former Reds shot-stopper Pepe Reina on Tuesday night.

It wasn’t just his goal that was impressive however, as he looks confident on the ball and is regularly involved, as he had more touches than Lazio’s star man Ciro Immobile, whilst registering an impressive 89% pass accuracy, per SofaScore.

Musiala has now made 26 appearances for the senior side at Bayern, contributing four goals in that time, which has seen his value soar to £21.6 million.

Although his contract is set to expire in 2022, recent reports have suggested that he will sign a new deal until 2026 shortly, which would perhaps bring an end to Liverpool’s chances of signing him for a reasonable price this summer, so they should arguably act now in the hope that they can make the youngster a better offer.

Considering Musiala has been able to establish himself in the current Champions League holders’ side aged just 17, it seems clear that he possesses incredible ability, and if he were to join the Reds, he and Harvey Elliott could arguably both become world-class attacking players under Jurgen Klopp.

Therefore, even if there is only a very small chance that Musiala could become a Liverpool player, Michael Edwards should do everything he can to try and bring him to the Premier League in the future.

And, in other news… Klopp can kill two birds with one stone at LFC by axing £75k-p/w flop in favour of £56m gem
