After seeing him shine out on loan last season, Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa must finally look to unleash Alfie McCalmont in the Premier League.

The 21-year-old was in impressive form for Oldham Athletic in League Two, scoring ten goals in 41 games in all competitions, and providing a further five assists too, being a key reason behind why they avoided relegation to non-league.

After seeing him make waves at Boundary Park, former Leeds man Noel Whelan waxed lyrical about the midfielder, saying: “He is a player that is immensely talented and he will do very well for Oldham. The way he plays the game is very intelligent.

“This is not a loan with a view to a permanent move from Leeds, this is a learning process. You have to be mentally tough to go out on loan, especially in League Two because it is more direct and robust compared to what you would get in the Premier League and Championship. He will be learning a lot about his game.”

And, speaking after he saw the 21-year-old put pen to paper on a new long-term deal to stay at Elland Road, Whelan insisted that Bielsa should be looking to utilise him more often.

He said: “A very good player, great on the ball and a good football mind. He is one that is learning his trade from watching Kalvin and being in and around that first-team setup.

“It is important that these young lads are integrated. It is vital for their progression and to give them confidence to step in when needed because there will be injuries and suspensions. Use them – that is why you have an academy and youth policy.”

A season away at Oldham, where he’s had regular football and developed into a real goal-scoring midfielder, will stand the youngster in good stead and will give Bielsa another option in the middle of the park.

And given he has already been involved in Bielsa’s set-up, he could go onto make a real impression and potentially even partner Phillips in the engine room and give Leeds that vital source of goals from central midfield – compare to McCalmont’s ten, the best a midfielder for the Whites managed was the four Mateusz Klich netted.

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has lauded the quality of Jack Harrison, saying that he would be an ‘absolute snip’ of a signing this summer if the Whites sign him permanently.

The Lowdown: Excellent performer for Leeds

After starring in the Championship last season, the 24-year-old has taken that form with him into the Premier League, registering an impressive eight goals and assists apiece.

Only Patrick Bamford has scored more often for Leeds in the top flight 2020/21, with Harrison a standout figure for an excellent Whites side.

The Latest: Harrison lauded by Whelan

Harrison is still only on loan from Manchester City, but it is believed that Leeds have the opportunity to make that deal permanent for £10m in the summer.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan waxed lyrical over Harrison’s performance against Burnley, saying he would be a steal at that price and tipping him to be a standout signing in the next transfer window. He said:

“Just an immense performance. He was instrumental in everything good we did against Burnley, both on and off the ball. Bielsa would have been delighted. He was everything that you would expect from him and more.

“When he has a bad game everyone is quick to come down on him but that is because he has set his standards so high. We notice it when he is not at his best but he was certainly at his best against Burnley.

“His passing was absolutely spot on. The weight of pass, the timing of the pass, the vision, everything about it. Clinical. He showed a cleverness and intelligence.

“For roughly £10million this summer it’s an absolute snip. We have seen enough of him now to know he is probably already worth double or close to triple that, around £30m. He is going to be one of the bargains if not the bargain of the summer.”

The Verdict: No-brainer for Whites

Whelan is spot on in his assessment and Leeds would be mad not to try and bring in Harrison permanently ahead of next season.

He has been one of the standout performers with Marcelo Bielsa at the helm, combining reliable end product with an admirable work ethic, averaging 1.7 tackles per game in the league. Also, the manager knows what he can do and he is already familiar with the intricacies of Bielsa’s methods.

Given the level of inflation in the current transfer market, £10m really would be an excellent deal for Leeds, and Harrison could jump at the chance to stay at a club where he is thriving and playing regularly.

In some Leeds United news which was perhaps to be expected, it has been confirmed that both Pablo Hernandez and Gaetano Berardi will leave the Premier League club this summer.

With the Premier League season coming to an end after Leeds’ clash against West Brom on Sunday afternoon, Marcelo Bielsa must surely grasp the opportunity to give Hernandez a well-deserved send-off in front of the returning Elland Road fans.

The Spaniard turned 36 last month and it has been incredibly telling that the highest number of minutes he has played in one top-flight game this season is the 67 that he completed against Leicester way back in early November.

Dubbed as an “inspiration”, the £21,000-a-week earner has previously stated that he wouldn’t want to overstay his welcome at Leeds if he felt like the time had passed him by. He said: “If you talk about football tactically or technically, this is probably the best time of my career. Physically I feel good but obviously 10 years ago, I felt better. I can’t change this.”

Now that the time has come for him to leave, the Spaniard should be given the chance to say his goodbyes on the pitch when Leeds welcome the Baggies to Elland Road.

It’s a sentiment which has been echoed by former Leeds ace Andy Couzens, who suggested that Hernandez and Berardi should both feature this afternoon.

The 45-year-old said: “All good things have to come to an end!! Two players that have given everything to this great club and will be forever in the club’s hearts. Let’s see them both play for the last time on Sunday and with only 8.5 thousand fans in the stadium they will still get the best send-off.”

Crystal Palace are targeting Swansea manager Steve Cooper and Burnley boss Sean Dyche as possible options to succeed Roy Hodgson at Selhurst Park.

What’s the story?

According to a huge update from EuroSport reporter Dean Jones, the Eagles have moved on from previous targets Eddie Howe and Frank Lampard in their pursuit of a new manager and the club’s owners now have Cooper and Dyche on their wishlist.

Hodgson announced his departure from the south London club a few weeks ago after four relatively successful years at Palace, but chairman Steve Parish is yet to appoint his replacement.

Fans will be buzzing

Although Cooper and Dyche are completely contrasting in their styles of play and managerial experience, both are likely to be appealing options to the Palace supporters.

The Swans boss has only been in charge of a senior side for two seasons, guiding the Welsh outfit to the Championship play-offs on both occasions.

He’s built an impressive reputation for developing young talent throughout his time working in Liverpool’s academy and as the England Under-17’s manager, though, guiding the young Three Lions side to World Cup glory back in 2017.

Cooper often likes his sides to build patiently from the back and play combinations in the wide positions. Although it hasn’t always been successful at the Liberty Stadium, Swansea have been lauded for their attractive style on many occasions, and the prospect of bringing in a young, exciting coach will surely have the Palace fans buzzing.

Dyche, on the other hand, is an appealing appointment for a host of different reasons. The 49-year-old has been in charge at Turf Moor for nine seasons now and has achieved unprecedented success with his Burnley side.

Despite working on a shoestring budget, the Clarets have achieved two promotions and two top-half Premier League finishes under his tutelage.

The Englishman’s name has virtually become a byword for guaranteed top-flight safety in recent seasons: something Palace will be desperate to achieve in 2021/22.

While Dyche may not win many plaudits for his back to basics approach to the beautiful game, his style is certainly effective, and the Palace fans would surely welcome someone like him with open arms to oversee this transitional period and ensure the club maintains its Premier League status throughout the process.

Parish appointing either one of these two men should be something that has Eagles fans buzzing.
