Simon Jones is likely to miss the rest of the season after damaging knee cartilage which will keep him out of action for up to four weeks. Jones, who was forced to pull out of the England Lions matches against the South Africans last week, will undergo an arthroscopy to clean up the knee as soon as possible.”The plan was to have Simon still playing in September,” Steve Rhodes, Worcestershire’s director of cricket, said. “Whilst this has not quite been achieved I am delighted with his contribution and the plan will be to rehab Simon in a way to get him back fitter and stronger for the cricket that lies ahead of him.”He has not played for England for three years after a series of abortive county comebacks, but this season marked his best chance yet. He has taken 42 first-class wickets at an average of 18.02 and a strike rate of 30 and his inclusion in the Lions set-up was another positive step before the latest blow. He was overlooked for the Tests against South Africa, but a good performance at Grace Road could have strengthened his claims for an England recall. With the Ashes coming around next year in England, Jones was shaping as a candidate for the winter tours but his latest injury must put that in doubt. If he doesn’t make the main trips to India and West Indies, he may get the chance on the England Lions tours, the first of which is to India before Christmas.

Sheff Wed predicted XI to face Doncaster

Sheffield Wednesday have endured a difficult start to their 2021/22 campaign following their relegation from the Championship last term.

Darren Moore’s side lost to Huddersfield on penalties after a 0-0 draw in their Carabao Cup match to open the season, before drawing 0-0 with Charlton in their League One curtain-raiser.

This means that they head into a home clash with Doncaster on Saturday without scoring a single goal so far this season and are in need of a positive result to kickstart some momentum.

They face a Doncaster team who lost their first League One match 2-1 against AFC Wimbledon and then beat Walsall on penalties in the Carabao Cup.

Will Moore ring the changes this afternoon? Here is our predicted XI for the match…

We are predicting the Owls boss to make three changes to his team from the trip to east London, all in the final third of the pitch.

He lined up with a 4-3-3 formation against Charlton and we believe that the back five and midfield three will stay the same. Every player outside of the front three achieved a WhoScored rating of 6.5 or higher, with Hutchinson, Iorfa and Bannan all tipping over into the 7/10 bracket.

After failing to score in the league opener, changing the front three could be exactly what Wednesday need. However, the first of our changes may be enforced as Callum Paterson was taken off with a head injury last week, and we are predicting Lee Gregory to take his place as the starting number nine. You may have already read our case for the 32-year-old to get the nod as Moore’s lone striker because of his experience and goalscoring record.

Secondly, we believe that Marvin Johnson will slot in on the left of the front three in place of Jaden Brown. The £6k-per-week dynamo is yet to make his full debut for the Owls after joining from Middlesbrough and this could be Moore’s chance to hand him a start.

Brown lined up on the left against Charlton and recorded a disappointing WhoScored rating of 6.21 as he was dispossessed three times, lost the ball through poor control twice, and created just one chance during the game. The inexperienced 22-year-old could do with being taken out of the firing line after a lacklustre showing.

This is where Johnson could be perfect to come in as he is experienced and proven himself to be a reliable performer at a higher level. The 30-year-old was a regular for Middlesbrough in the Championship in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 campaigns, making 38 and 42 appearances respectively – suggesting that he could thrive after dropping down to a lower division.

Finally, Wednesday announced the signing of Theo Corbeanu on loan from Premier League side Wolves earlier this month and he is yet to make his debut for the club. Andre Green put on a disasterclass against Charlton as he registered a dismal WhoScored rating of 5.8, managing zero shots and zero chances created in 64 minutes on the right wing.

This suggests that he does not deserve to keep his place in the starting XI, which opens the door for Corbeanu to come in. Whilst there is little evidence to prove that this would be a good decision, Green’s performance was abysmal and an exciting young talent like Corbeanu could potentially thrive on being given the opportunity to show that he can make the step up to senior football. That is why Moore should gamble and throw him into the side today.

Is this Celtic’s Edouard successor?

This is the summer of change at Celtic Football Club. However, whether their mass upheaval on the field and behind the scenes will be enough to snatch the title back from their fierce rivals remains to be seen.

The Hoops have got rid of some major names behind the scenes and they now have a pairing of Dominic McKay and Ange Postecoglou at the helm.

That being said, life for the Australian and former Scottish rugby director hasn’t got off to the greatest of starts.

Celtic have been dumped out of Europe’s premier competition at the first hurdle and lost their opening Premiership game to newly promoted Hearts.

Those matches have some common themes; defensive mistakes and a lack of goals for Odsonne Edouard. The Frenchman has failed to find the net this season and has attracted criticism as a result.

Edouard cannot be accused of not trying but he does look a shadow of the man who so consistently has reached over 20 goals a season since signing for the Bhoys.

His chance at reuniting with Brendan Rodgers has come and gone after Leicester pulled the plug on a move but Brighton remain interested in his services.

If he leaves then Celtic will have their backs against the wall. Leigh Griffiths has signed a new contract and the J-League’s top scorer – Kyogo Furuhashi – is now a Hoop.

There will be a bedding-in period for the Japan international, however, so he cannot be tasked with succeeding Edouard immediately.

Instead, they should look towards Kevin Nisbet, a man who’s started this campaign in the same vein he ended the last one; scoring goals.

The striker was included among the Scotland squad for Euro 2020 and has witnessed a rapid rise in recent years. His form has been fantastic and he’s been regularly linked with Celtic as a result.

A bigger move will be forthcoming in the not too distant future but Postecoglou must ensure his side lead the negotiations.

Dubbed a “wonderful” player by Frank McAvennie, the Hibs forward has found the net on 19 occasions in 48 matches, proving he has what it takes at Premiership level.

Impressively, he looks as though he can take his game to the next level. Rising high to reach a James Forrest cross in a pre-Euro 2020 friendly, he scored against the Netherlands during an eye-catching 2-2 draw.

He is clinical in the air and has immense composure in front of goal. He may not have the grace and poise of Edouard but he is still ruthless.

Celtic have looked to other nations to provide competition to their main striker in recent years – namely Albian Ajeti and Patryk Klimala – but their lack of goals dictate that they have been failures.

Consequently, the newly formed recruitment team should look closer to home and bring Nisbet to Paradise.

If Edouard leaves, he could make or break their Premiership title bid. He scores goals and knows the top-flight inside out.

Shoaib Akhtar has filed a writ petition in the Lahore High Court seeking to overturn the original five-year ban imposed on him by the Pakistan board that was later reduced to 18 months by an appellate tribunal.Even though Shoaib’s ban was reduced after an appeal, he wasn’t happy with the tribunal’s decision. “I want to play for Pakistan as soon as possible,” Shoaib told PTI. “I was disappointed with the tribunal’s decision on my appeal.””We feel the decision of the PCB in the first place to ban him for five years was illegal and unjustified,” Abid Hasan Minto, Shoaib’s legal counsel, said. “We believe he is being prevented from playing cricket for his country by an illegal decision of the board. The ban itself is very harsh. We are contesting the entire ban.”The court, after hearing the appeal, summoned the Pakistan board to explain the ban. “The court heard the petition and has given an urgent notice to the respondent, the PCB, to appear before it on July 4,” PCB lawyer Taffazul Hussain Rizvi told AFP.Nasim Ashraf, the Pakistan board chairman, had said Shoaib was free to appeal in court. “That is his decision to make,” Ashraf had said. “The tribunal’s verdict has nothing to do with the PCB. I can’t overturn the reduced ban on him. The decision made by Justice Aftab Farrukh is final and it can only be challenged in the court.”Shoaib was banned for five years in April by a disciplinary committee of the PCB for violating the players’ code of conduct after he was charged with publicly criticising the board for offering him a retainership instead of a contract. The ban prevented him from playing in the IPL until it was suspended for one month which facilitated Shoaib’s participation in the Twenty20 tournament.Shoaib appealed against the five-year ban and it was reduced to 18 months along with a fine of Rs 7 million (approximately $105,000) by a PCB-appointed appellate tribunal, headed by Justice (retd) Aftab Farrukh, on June 14.

Shoaib's appeal proceedings delayed

The tribunal hearing Shoaib Akhtar’s appeal against the five-year ban imposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has put off its proceedings until June 14.”The tribunal heard arguments from the lawyer of the PCB and lawyers of Akhtar, and the next hearing will be held on June 14,” Justice (retd) Farrukh Aftab, the tribunal head, said. One of the three members of the tribunal, Salman Taseer, had withdrawn after he took over as the governor of Punjab province, while another member, former Test cricketer Haseeb Ahsan, could not attend due to illness. Naveed Chaudhry, a lawyer, was named as Taseer’s replacement last week . Aftab said the proceeding would be put off while Chaudhry was briefed on the case. The tribunal had earlier temporarily upheld the ban in April, but suspended it a few days later so that Shoaib could take part in the IPL. Shoaib had been barred only for playing in or for Pakistan, but the IPL refused to let him play unless the PCB sanction was overturned. He joined the Kolkata Knight Riders mid-way through the first season and dazzled in his first game, picking up four wickets in a sensational opening burst against the Delhi Daredevils. However, he soon picked up an injury and missed Kolkata’s last three games due to a knee injury. The Pakistan board issued the ban after Shoaib, who was not being offered a contract by the PCB, lashed out at domestic tournaments, pitches and the administration in general. He made the comments while on a two-year probation after hitting team-mate Mohammad Asif with a bat before the World Twenty20 last year.Nasim Ashraf, the PCB chairman, had also slapped a Rs 22 crore defamation suit (approx US$3.27 million) against Shoaib after he had alleged on a TV show that Ashraf had demanded a share of his salary from the IPL. However, the matter was closed after Shoaib retracted his statement and apologised to Ashraf, the PCB chairman, during the hearing of the tribunal.

Watson on target to secure cup allrounder role

COLOMBO – If Shane Watson is feeling the pressure of being theall-rounder hope of Australian cricket, he isn’t showing it.

Michael Donaldson24-Sep-2002COLOMBO – If Shane Watson is feeling the pressure of being theall-rounder hope of Australian cricket, he isn’t showing it.The 22-year-old Queensland-born Tasmanian is set to be one ofAustralia’s key players in the Champions Trophy semi-final against SriLanka here on Friday, easily be the most intense match he’s played. After that there’s a summer at home and, if he continues his currentprogress, a spot at next year’s World Cup.So far he seems unfazed by what’s been asked of him and actually appearsto be thriving on the challenges.”I’m very happy with the way things have been going,” Watson said inColombo.”I’ve been working really hard to develop my one-day game andeverything’s going to plan at the moment.”Watson, 22, has improved as a bowler since he’s been on tour this seasonand he’s shown with the bat that he can smash quick runs as well andalso occupy the crease if necessary.”With my bowling I’ve been working on bowling smart to get my runs perover down, that’s my role – just tie it up and let other guys take thewickets,’ Watson said. With the bat, his biggest problem – if it can be called a problem – islearning to hit the ball in the air.As a natural no.4 batsman, Watson has spent his life playing thepercentages, keeping the ball on the deck and making technically correctscores. But as an all-rounder for Australia, he’s often required to blastboundaries off very few balls at the end of an innings.”Since I’ve been a little fella I’ve concentrated on not hitting theball in the air – that’s been a really important thing because the moreyou hit the ball in the air the higher chance you have of getting out.”That’s something I’ve had to develop – the confidence to hit over thetop and to pick the areas to hit.”So far, Watson appears to have achieved his goals. On this tour he’s only batted three times but has yet to get out. On theway he’s made a match-saving 77 not out off 113 balls to win the matchagainst Kenya in Nairobi while his other knocks have been 10 not out offsix balls against Pakistan in Nairobi and 19 not out off nine ballsagainst New Zealand here.In the bowling department, he’s taken six wickets in seven games sincethe start of this tour, while conceding only 3.09 runs per over.It all points to Watson being the man to finally nail Australia’stroublesome all-rounder spot, something Andrew Symonds and Ian Harveyhaven’t been able to do.”It is a very difficult role because you have be very flexible,” saidWatson.”You either have to come and do what Andrew Symonds or Ian Harvey can do- strike the ball very cleanly – but then there’s other times when yougo in at 5-60 and get the team out of trouble, that’s something I thinkI’m strongest at and I’m trying to develop my hitting to get balls tothe boundary.”Ian Harvey’s proven to be a great one-day bowler.”But I guess it’s the all-round package the team’s been looking for …hopefully I can become that genuine allrounder.”Australia resumed full training today after a break in the Maldives, while the tournament had a rest day mode ahead of Wednesday’s firstsemifinal between South Africa and India.
