Wolves reject Spurs’ £15m bid for Traore

Wolves have rejected Tottenham’s £15million bid for Adama Traore, according to reliable journalist John Percy.

The Lowdown: Constant Traore exit rumour

The 25-year-old has been continually linked with an exit from Molineux in recent weeks, whether it be for the January transfer window or this summer.

Bruno Lage seemingly doesn’t see Traore as part of his plans moving forward, with some reports even suggesting the manager has green-lighted an exit, so it feels inevitable that he will leave the club in the near future.

Spurs are clearly the front-runners to snap up the Spaniard and a key update has now emerged regarding their pursuit of him.

The Latest: Wolves turn down £15m bid

According to The Telegraph‘s Percy, Wolves have turned down a £15million bid for Traore from the north Londoners, as the journalist claimed it is “becoming a bit of a saga” on Twitter.

Wanderers value the wide man at £20million and won’t budge until that amount is met.

The Verdict: Up the offer, Spurs

Spurs know what they have to do in order to get their man and it would benefit all parties if they simply up their offer and get a deal completed.

Traore himself is likely to jump at the chance of a fresh challenge – he has only managed ten starts in the Premier League this season – and Wolves can hopefully then use the money on a new signing this month.

While the Spain international has done good things in a Wolves shirt, his tendency to flatter to deceive means it is time for him to move on, with just 11 goals to his name in 153 appearances for the club.

In other news, some Wolves fans have reacted to a transfer exit rumour. Read more here.

Netherlands have secured Michael Dighton, the Tasmanian batsman, as their overseas player for the Clydesdale Bank 40.Dighton, 33, has previously had spells in English domestic cricket with Derbyshire and Hampshire and is an important asset to the Netherlands side shorn of Ryan ten Doeschate, who is with Essex ,and Alexei Kervezee, who will play for Worcestershire.Dighton said he is pleased to be linking up with the Netherlands team and hoped his experience will aid a young side. “I am really looking forward to representing the Netherlands in the Clydesdale Bank 40,” he said. “I will use my experience and leadership qualities to help the whole squad in all areas of the demanding modern game.”It is an exciting time in Dutch cricket and participation in this tournament will give the squad great exposure to a high standard of cricket.”Peter Drinnen, the Netherlands coach, is also thrilled to see Dighton in the squad. “Michael will bring that general “know-how” to the games for senior and junior players alike and give us the opportunity to have a well respected cricketer within our ranks for most of the season.”It is increasingly difficult to find overseas players for a full season and having Mike resident in the Netherlands for a summer combining his club duties with VOC Rotterdam is an added boost.”

Delhi crumble on crumbling Kotla pitch

If the batsmen were looking for trouble, boy, they came to the right place

The Bulletin by Sidharth Monga11-Apr-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outPiyush Chawla was Man of the Match for his terrific spell•Indian Premier League

If the batsmen were looking for trouble, boy, they came to the right place. The Feroz Shah Kotla track was back to its Champions League shenanigans, and Kings XI Punjab, having seen Delhi Daredevils fail to read its nature soon enough, kept their heads in what seemed a meagre chase on paper, also keeping alive their remotest of outside chance to make it to the semis. Only 21 boundaries were hit in 38.2 overs on a pitch that offered variable bounce and appreciable turn right from the first ball, and whose slowness made it hard to time shots. The Punjab bowlers were smart and accurate, two of Delhi’s big three were consumed by silly running, the others collapsed, and hence the below-par total. While Punjab were sensible in the chase, they couldn’t create a comfortable gap between their run rate and the required rate until Yuvraj Singh hit a four and a six in the 14th over. The nature of the pitch was not so apparent in the first four overs of the afternoon. Delhi had got off to another flier when madness struck: Gautam Gambhir and David Warner were run out within three balls of each other, and only 69 runs came in 15.5 overs after that. The spinners bowled 12 overs between them for 55 runs – four of them inside the Powerplay, and Juan Theron, the specialist pace bowler, was used only for two overs, that too at the death.Even after Virender Sehwag’s dismissal to the first ball he faced, Punjab would have been disappointed with the first 3.4 overs: without hitting even one shot in the air, Delhi raced away to 39, including two sets of five wides. The next delivery, though, Gambhir cut straight to short third man, was called for a single by Warner, and then sent back with no chance to get in. Either way there would have been a run-out: there was no single available. Two balls later, Warner played a similar shot, and Paul Collingwood responded in similar manner. From there on, Punjab spinners employed a vicious vice grip on the batsmen: only two boundaries came in the rest of the innings. Following Powar’s opening act, Piyush Chawla feasted. Collingwood’s lbw wasn’t as bad as it looked; it was worse. He sat back and intended to read Chawla off the pitch, and was caught dead plumb to a straight topspinner. Daniel Vettori was defeated by a perfect Chawla googly. Thirty-nine for 1 in 3.3 had become 58 for 4 in 10 overs, and it was down to Dinesh Karthik to take Delhi to a fighting total.Karthik tried various tricks to get quick runs, sweeps, reverse-sweeps, moving in the crease, but could never get away. When he tried to force the pace off the coming-back Irfan Pathan, he holed out to long-on, for 17 off 35. Mithun Manhas, Delhi’s middle-order mainstay for years in Ranji Trophy, played sensibly after that, and managed to go at about run a ball for his 26, an effort that took Delhi beyond 100.Mahela Jayawardene walked out to open with Irfan, sent presumably to get some quick runs, but it was the classier batsman who made sure Punjab didn’t crumble in the chase. While Irfan holed out to deep midwicket, Jayawardene kept playing the orthodox shots and scored at a run a ball, which was better than the rate required. In the fourth over of the chase, he scored a lovely inside-out boundary and followed it up with the first six of the match, a clean strike over long-on. Still even Jayawardene found it difficult to time the ball, a few of his attempted big shots ended up inside the infield, and on this pitch a collapse couldn’t have been too many corners away. When Jayawardene fell at the end of the 11th over, for a 35-ball 38, he had left Punjab 47 to get off 54, which soon became 41 off 42. In the 14th over, though, Yuvraj managed two clean hits in quick succession, a cluster by the standards of this match. He guided Rajat Bhatia past short fine, followed by a heaved six over midwicket. After that the equation was manageable, and the late hiccup through Kumar Sangakkara’s wicket only teased Delhi for having over-aimed during their innings.

Pressure builds on Gayle's men

At the start of the series Chris Gayle tipped a 4-1 win for West Indies, but given their predicament he would probably settle for 1-4

Peter English11-Feb-2010Match FactsIn the mood: Ricky Ponting finished Tuesday’s win in Adelaide with 57 not out•Getty Images

Friday, February 12, SCG
Start time 1325 (0325 GMT)The Big PictureAt the start of the series Chris Gayle tipped a 4-1 win for West Indies, but given their predicament he would probably settle for 1-4. Calling the tourists out-classed in the opening exchanges is being polite to guests and if they lose in Sydney on Friday the five-game contest will be decided with two matches spare. After West Indies’ fight in the Test series earlier in the season, the follow-up campaign has been hugely disappointing, although Gayle hasn’t been helped by a batch of injuries which kept many of his best men at home. Batting has been the most serious problem, with the tourists managing 143 on the way to a 113-run loss in Melbourne, and 170 in Adelaide after being 4 for 16. The second game, which was watched by only 8378 spectators, was finished in the 27th over of the chase.Australia have been outstanding throughout the limited-overs segment of the summer and are on a 10-match winning streak. With a 2-0 lead, the hosts have been able to rest key players in Shane Watson and Brad Haddin, but there won’t be any relief for West Indies as the locals pursue an undefeated summer.Form guide (most recent first)Australia WWWWW
West Indies LLLLL
Watch out for…Everything for West Indies currently revolves around Chris Gayle. The match in Adelaide was basically over after Gayle’s first-ball departure and he must find a way to escape from the restrictions Australia have placed on him. Over the past week Gayle has remained cheery and upbeat in public but in his private moments he must feel like a one-man band. He is so important that at the moment the scenario is Gayle out, game over.Ricky Ponting has run into some good form with scores of 55, 49 and 57 not out in his past three games, but will be wanting more. With his developing team doing incredibly well, he can relax at the crease, which isn’t a good thing for the opposition bowlers. He pulled Kemar Roach in Adelaide, showing he is not haunted by the fast man’s short balls which got him in the Perth Test, and will look to sign off with a century to seal the series.Team news The wicketkeeper Tim Paine and Adam Voges come into the squad for Shane Watson and Brad Haddin, who are resting. Paine has opened in 14 of his 15 ODIs and will slot in with Shaun Marsh at the top. With Watson out, Australia could play all four fast men and Nathan Hauritz, which would leave James Hopes and Voges to miss out.Australia (possible) 1 Shaun Marsh, 2 Tim Paine (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Cameron White, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Mitchell Johnson, 8 Ryan Harris, 9 Nathan Hauritz, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Doug Bollinger.West Indies were unchanged in the second game but after two horrible defeats will have to do something to spruce up the side. Gayle has talked about needing some substance in the middle order, which could give Brendan Nash an opening, while Wavell Hinds is another option, possibly for the struggling Runako Morton.West Indies (possible) 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Wavell Hinds, 3 Travis Dowlin, 4 Narsingh Deonarine, 5 Brendan Nash, 6 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 7 Kieron Pollard, 8 Dwayne Smith, 9 Nikita Miller, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Kemar Roach.Pitch and conditionsPakistan chose to bowl first at the SCG last month and were rolled for 127 in their chase as the bowlers took advantage of seaming conditions. It has been another wet lead-up and there are storms predicted for Friday afternoon, along with a maximum of 31C. If that happens the bowlers will be happy again.Stats and trivia West Indies’ top six batsmen have scored 150 runs in the past two games while Australia’s top four have managed 310 Only one game at the SCG has been won by the batting side from the final ball of the 50th over. That came in 1995-96 when Michael Bevan starred against West Indies West Indies have twice scored fewer than 100 at the SCG, with 87 in 1992-93 and 91 in 2000-01Quotes “At 2-0 down in a five-match series, this is the time for some of our players to come of age.”

“Every time we start a series that’s our goal, to go undefeated. It’s no different in this series. We played really well against Pakistan. We gave them nothing and we’ll be doing that against the West Indies.”

Hurt West Indies aim to bounce back

A preview of the second game of the one-day series between West Indies and Zimbabwe

The Preview by Siddhartha Talya05-Mar-2010Match FactsSaturday, March 6, Providence
Start time 0930 (1330 GMT)
Kieron Pollard has much to offer in the middle order and will look to make amends for his lapse in the first ODI•Getty Images

Big PictureOttis Gibson’s tenure as West Indies coach could not have begun on a worse note. In his two internationals at the helm, his team has slumped to unprecedented lows – a defeat in the very first Twenty20 between the sides, and an ODI loss for the first time against Zimbabwe at home. The series was meant as an opportunity to cast aside the memories of a winless tour of Australia and begin a fresh phase with a dose of success. But the performance in the first ODI in Providence, where three batsmen – Kieron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin and Dwayne Smith – played irresponsibly to bungle a winnable position presents the hosts with a renewed headache. The trio played poor shots to be dismissed, and poor running between the wickets cost Andre Fletcher and Narsingh Deonarine. It was the middle order that led the resistance, though inadequate, against Australia in the 0-4 loss, but the trend was reversed on Thursday, with the same personnel wilting under pressure on a sluggish track. For starters, Chris Gayle’s blunt description of the middle-order collapse as “crap” is a step in the right direction. He acknowledged Zimbabwe’s competitiveness, but his own team’s failure to measure up would have hit the confidence of a man who, not too long ago, had aimed at a 4-1 win against Australia.Amid poor crowds and declining form, West Indies are battling for pride against an opposition which, with each successful outing, is shoring up the resolve and determination to return from self-imposed exile.Form Guide (Last five completed matches)West Indies: LLLLL
Zimbabwe: WLLLL
Watch out forGreg Lamb was the best of Zimbabwe’s bowlers, conceding just 35 in ten overs despite his lack of variation. His strategy was to angle the ball in towards off stump, leaving little room for the batsman to get him away. But Lamb, who decided to return to Zimbabwe after being released by Hampshire last year, is primarily a batsman and a fairly successful one at the domestic level. With an average of 55.68 in the Logan Cup, the first-class tournament, and 64 in the one-day competition, Lamb could prove a handful in the middle order.Ruthless batting in the Champions League Twenty20 won Kieron Pollard a US$750,000 IPL contract with Mumbai Indians, and his successful stint with South Australia contributed towards him making scores of 31, 32, 62 and 45 in the ODI series in February. An average of 17.88 in ODIs – not befitting a player of his talent – and the lapse in the first ODI should spur him to make amends.Team newsAn unexpected defeat is likely to prompt a change in plans for the hosts. Though Dwayne Bravo has not been named in the squad for the first two ODIs, a call-up, given the urgency of a series-levelling win, cannot be ruled out. Bravo could take Dwayne Smith’s place if he has recovered from an injured thumb; if not, Darren Sammy could be drafted in. Ramnaresh Sarwan, also not in the squad for the Providence fixtures, has warmed up nicely with a century for Guyana in the domestic four-day competition. The signs are that he has recovered well from his back injury and West Indies will be tempted to have him in the line-up, stepping in for Andre Fletcher.West Indies (probable) – 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Adrian Barath, 3 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 4 Andre Fletcher/Ramnaresh Sarwan, 5 Narsingh Deonarine, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Darren Sammy/Dwayne Smith, 9 Nikita Miller, 10 Sulieman Benn, 11 Kemar Roach.Zimbabwe will be keen to retain their four-pronged spin attack and are likely to field the same team. While Zimbabwe have so far opted for Brendan Taylor, who is an attacking batsman and also provides them with an additional spin option, the absence of Charles Coventry, the previous joint record-holder for the highest score in ODIs, remains a surprise.Zimbabwe (probable) – 1 Hamilton Masakadza, 2 Vusi Sibanda, 3 Tatenda Taibu (wk), 4 Brendan Taylor/Charles Coventry, 5 Stuart Matsikenyeri, 6 Greg Lamb, 7 Elton Chigumbura, 8 Graeme Cremer, 9 Prosper Utseya (capt), 10 Shingirai Masakadza, 11 Ray Price.Pitch and conditionsSpinners are likely to feature prominently in friendly conditions in Providence and the forecast points towards a mostly sunny but windy day. A sluggish track, spinners racing through their overs and a tempered run-rate were the features of the first game, and the second promises much the same.Stats and trivia Barath consumed 27 deliveries from Lamb for just 11 runs. Ray Price, too, troubled him, conceding just eight in 24 balls. In contrast, Shivnarine Chanderpaul took Lamb for 18 in 21 and Price for eight in as many. Taibu’s innovativeness was evident in his scoring rates against West Indian spinners – he took Nikita Miller for 19 in 17 and Deonarine for 29 in 24. Vusi Sibanda’s 162-ball 95 is seventh in the list for the number of balls faced for a score of under 100. The list is led by the PCB’s newly-appointed chairman of selectors Mohsin Khan, who ate up 176 balls for his 70 against West Indies in the second semi-final of the 1983 World Cup. Next is Sunil Gavaskar, with his infamous 174-ball 36 against England in the 1975 World Cup.Quotes”When you do crap, it’s definitely crap and there is no excuse. Guys have to take responsibility out there in the middle. It is just sad and disappointing.”
Chris Gayle is straightforward in his criticism of the dispiriting performance in the first ODI.”West Indies are still a good side. We still respect them. For us to beat them, we need to make sure that we play hard, remain focussed, pay attention to the small things, and remain disciplined.”
Prosper Utseya lays down the strategy to upset West Indies.

The uncapped fast bowler Trent Copeland could be in line for his state debut after New South Wales chose him in a 12-man squad for the Sheffield Shield game against Queensland at the SCG starting on Friday. Copeland was called in due to the absence of Josh Hazlewood, who is with the Under-19 World Cup squad, and Nathan Bracken, who is making a steady return from knee surgery.Bracken played in the Blues’ FR Cup loss to South Australia on Tuesday but is being given more time to prepare for a comeback to the more demanding four-day game.
