Swansea City v Manchester United – Match Preview

Swansea’s unbeaten record at the Liberty Stadium will come under extreme threat on Saturday evening as they prepare to host Premier League champions Manchester United.

Brendan Rodgers side have won three and drawn two of their five games at home but will face arguably their toughest test of the season so far when Sir Alex Ferguson’s Red Devil’s come to town. The Swans have enjoyed a sterling campaign so far confounding the critics who tipped them to rock bottom and struggling to compete in the top flight. It couldn’t be any different though as the club have matched up to some of the leagues biggest clubs narrowly losing away at Arsenal and Chelsea whilst securing a memorable 0-0 draw against Liverpool at Anfield before the international break. It’s their form at the Liberty Stadium that has been most impressive though with 11 of their 13 coming on home soil whilst the defence has been breached just the once on their own patch. Welsh international’s Ashley Williams and Neil Taylor have been consistent members of the back four alongside Spanish full back Angel Rangel putting in some exceptional displays and the trio will relish coming up against the likes of Wayne Rooney and co. It’s not just in defence that the Swans have impressed with the likes of Scott Sinclair, Joe Allen and Nathan Dyer being peppered with plaudits after their tremendous start to life in the Premier League. Rodgers has implemented a fluid, passing philosophy that plays to his sides strengths with the pace of Dyer and Sinclair down the flanks allowing them to exploit teams on the counter attack. Record signing Danny Graham has also played his part with four goals in his last five whilst at the other end Dutch keeper Michael Vorm has performed numerous heroics between the sticks including a wonder save at the death against Liverpool last time out.

Swansea’s resolve to maintain their strong home record will certainly be put to the test against a United side who are unbeaten on their travels and are still spoiling after their derby day humiliation at the end of October. That 6-1 thrashing at the hands of rivals City has been followed by a run of four wins in all competitions as they look to salvage a title challenge that already looks a lost cause. Pegging back their noisy neighbours is an unenviable task with the Blues building up a telling five point lead at the summit but if there is anyone that can do it’s Ferguson. The Scot celebrated 25-year’s in charge of the club two weeks ago seeing a stand at Old Trafford named in his honour before watching his side labour to a 1-0 win over Sunderland. Despite winning their last four performances have hardly been inspiring with their last two Premier League victories coming in the shape of 1-0 wins. It’s always said that churning out results regardless of how your team is playing is the hallmark of champions and its those hard fought wins that could be the difference at the end of the season. However Ferguson will certainly be demanding a better display from his side as they make the long trip to Wales to take on the mid-table Swans. Injuries to several key players may force the United boss into rejigging his side with Javier Hernandez expected to be partnered with Rooney up front with the England striker searching for his first league goal since scoring against Chelsea in mid-September.

Injury News

No new injury worries for Rodgers with Alan Tate the only long-term absentee. The Swans boss could have striker Stephen Dobbie and on-loan defender Steven Caulker back although it’s thought both will have to make do with a place on the bench.

Key Player

Danny Graham – A slow start to his career in Wales had some fans querying the clubs decision to splash £3.5 million on the former Watford man but four in his last five have dampened fears over his ability to cope in the Premier League. He’s looked deadly in front of goal during the past month but his striking aptitude will be put through a thorough examination against United.

Match Fact

This will be the first meeting between the sides at the Liberty Stadium with the Swans desperate to protect an unbeaten run at their former ground the Vetch field. They’ve won six and drawn two of the eight games since coming up against United for the first time in 1931.

Injury News

Ferguson has a treatment room full of key players with Danny Wellbeck and Michael Owen ruled out after picking up injuries this week. Tom Cleverley is also struggling with a foot injury whilst defender Chris Smalling could return in a few weeks from an ankle problem.

Key Player

Wayne Rooney – Whilst the goals may have dried up for Rooney his influence on the field continues to grown for United. The England man has been deployed in central midfield in recent weeks with Ferguson desperate to inject some creativity into his engine room. It worked wonderfully with Rooney given time and space to display his god given talents on the ball but expect to see him back in his natural position and in the hunt for goals this week.

Match Fact

United’s record at Swansea is a shocking one having failed to register a single victory in eight attempts. However the last meeting between the sides before Saturday’s encounter ended in the Red Devil’s favour as they ran out 2-1 winners at Old Trafford back in 1983.

Division One (old) 18th December 1982

Swansea City 0-0 Manchester United

Attendance:  15,748

Referee: Unknown

PREDICTION

Swansea’s strong home form will certainly stand them in good stead against United who are still licking their deep wounds after the thrashing they received from City. Their form on the road has been superb and the way they ground out a 1-0 in their last away trip at Everton is a measure of the Red Devil’s resolve. However they come up against a Swans side playing without fear and confidence in front of their own fans. The visitors will need their big hitters all firing if they are to overcome Rodgers’ side who will be going all out to provide the Premier League with shock win this weekend.

Score: 1-1

Manchester United v Aston Villa – Who’s Your Money On?

Manchester United will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to 24 matches with a positive result at home to Aston Villa tonight. It will match United’s record for top league form dating back to the late 1990s, but Ferguson will be aware that Villa can cause a threat tonight considering how close they came to victory in the reverse fixture earlier this season.

United should welcome back Rio Ferdinand and Rafael in defence, but Michael Carrick is still out with an ankle problem. The first team regulars should all be back in the starting eleven tonight considering the changes that were made in their FA Cup win at Southampton at the weekend.

Gerard Houllier will be happy to call upon super signing Darren Bent for this game, who was cup tied for their FA Cup win over Blackburn. There could also be a debut for deadline day loan signing Michael Bradley, if he is given international clearance in time. Houllier is only second behind Arsene Wenger in successive head-to-head meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Prediction: 2-1

Passionate, crazy, talented…that’s why I love him at Tottenham

Rumours are circulating that Paul Robinson could be involved in a transfer to leave Blackburn and replace Gomes at Tottenham. Robinson has been on great form this season producing consistently good performances. On the other hand, you have Gomes. He may have cut down on the amount of blunders he makes since his earlier Spurs career, but still does commit them. You cannot argue with that. Perhaps Harry recognizes this too and would replace Gomes with a safer option if possible to aid his assault on the top 4. Why then as a supporter of Spurs, should I not want this to happen?

There is no doubt in my mind that Heurelho Gomes is a little bit crazy. That is exactly why I love him. In today’s footballing era with professionalism in every aspect of the game it is hard to glean any kind of personality from a Premier League footballer. Despite social mediums such as Twitter, which bring us into contact more directly and more interactively with players, actions still speak louder than words.

Fans want a hard-worker, they want passion and they want determination. Heurelho Gomes is my favourite player because he is all these things, but also because he is a maverick.

He is one of the few goal-keepers that can probably throw it further than he can kick it, and he does so to the delight of the fans, often throwing his own body to the floor in the process. Furthermore, not many goalkeepers actively celebrate goals to the extent of Gomes, preferring to keep their composure and focus on the game ahead. On the other hand, Gomes, forever living in the moment, has been known to run to the crowd, fist pump and genuinely express his delight. The fans love him for it because they identify with him for it. They share his delight.

I admire him for his craziness but I also feel it is important to recognize his talent. It is by no means a certainty that Robinson is the better of the two. Gomes has conceded 12 goals less than Robinson this campaign. But he is yet to keep a clean sheet. Here lies the problem.

In his defence, Spurs have been hindered by an irregular pair of centre backs and that does not make it easier. Nor does the style of football Spurs play, with two wide men basically becoming strikers, and attacking fullbacks, Spurs are often left exposed. That makes it harder for Gomes to keep clean sheets and we should keep that in mind.

Despite his oddities, he would not be revered if he was not good. And although at times inconsistent, he pulls out some truly remarkable saves. For example, at White Hart Lane vs. FC Twente in Europe this year, at 0 – 0 Twente had a one-on-one and Gomes pulled of the most wondrous save, going to ground but reaching above his head to parry wide. Not many goalkeepers could have done it.

Sadly though with Gomes, the rough comes with the smooth. He is fallible and that is part of the reason I admire him. After all it is our fallibility that makes us human. He is not a robot who plays the percentages and keeps his head. Robinson is one of these (and probably a better keeper for it), but Gomes refuses to fit into such a box, this results in the miraculous and the disastrous.

But it is not for his crazy antics alone that I love him, it is his lack of superficiality coupled with his lack of (to some extent) self-awareness. When he plays I very rarely know what he is thinking, but I know exactly what is driving him- his passion for the game. He does not care what people think of him, he does not care what he looks like and he does not seek to maintain an image in the public’s eye (watch the video below to see what I mean). He only cares about his team, a refreshing sentiment in the modern game.

I want Tottenham to succeed and I want them to press on, and in order to do so they may well need to have a top class keeper. But I think Gomes is one, and while the following opinion will be criticised (and probably rightly so); I don’t think there is a better keeper in the world. After all, love is blind.

Chelsea to use Benayoun as Tottenham bait

Yossi Benayoun could be used as bait in Chelsea’s attempts to sign Luka Modric the Daily Mail understands.

The Stamford Bridge club are still in the hunt for the Croatian midfield despite Tottenham insisting they aren’t selling.

A new bid of £30 million was rumoured this week but now it seems that Benayoun could be used as a makeweight.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is a huge admirer of the Israel captain and tried to snatch him from under the nose of Chelsea after he left Liverpool last summer.

It was a season to forget for the 31-year-old creative midfielder as he ruptured his Achilles tendon and spent seven months on the sidelines.

Despite his bright pre-season performances and ability to link up with former Liverpool room mate Fernando Torres, new boss Andre Villas-Boas is prepared to sacrifice him to snare Modric.

The Portuguese coach has already stressed the importance of players who can add a fluidity and unpredictability to Chelsea’s stiff system with both Benayoun and Modric fitting that profile.

However Villas-Boas sees Modric as the one who is more adept at playing ‘between the lines’ and is prepared to tempt Spurs with the prospect of a cash-plus-player offer.

A move to White Hart Lane is likely to appeal to Benayoun who will struggle to break into the Chelsea midfield next season and Redknapp could be persuaded to take him and let the unhappy Modric leave.

The unsung heroes of Premier League success

Football fans are often accused of having a short memory and it’s never as short as when it comes goalkeepers. Never has the potential to go from hero to zero been more possible than when playing between the sticks. Not only are individual errors remembered for all time (Massimo Taibi, Rob Green, Paul Robinson, etc) but it takes an age for their good form to be recognised. Much like the defensive midfielders in the game they are often the unsung heroes of the team. They rarely grab the headlines and you’d struggle to find many people willing to buy a goalkeeper’s jersey given the choice. However that doesn’t make them any less important, keeping out goals is just as important as scoring them and there’s no substitute for a world-class goalie.

One way you can prove this is by the defensive records of the Premier League winning teams. People tend to forget the defensive side to title winning teams more often than they forget their scoring exploits but since 2000 the team that has conceded the least in the league has won the title seven times, the same amount of times as those teams that have scored the most. And whilst the defence obviously plays its part in that behind every good defence is a world-class keeper. In that period the goalkeepers behind those league titles have been Edwin van de Sar, Petr Cech, Jens Lehmann, Fabien Barthez and David Seaman. All national goalkeepers, all world-class players.

But what is even more interesting is that the defensive side to the game appears to be becoming more important than ever. If we compare the league winners since 2000 to those in the ten years previous then we can see a remarkable difference. In the decade before 2000 only two of the title winners had the best defensive record. All this denotes a huge change in tactics over the last two decades in England and as big a part as the defenders have to play the goalkeeper is vital to how they play.

Take Arsenal’s unbeaten season for example; yes they had a good defence but the authority with which Jens Lehmann organised the defence was vital. Similarly at Newcastle this season, their defence is far from world class but having Tim Krul behind them makes their job that much easier. Newcastle have only conceded fifteen goals so far this season, a record that only the Manchester clubs can better and a lot of the praise has been heading Collocini’s way but after watching Krul’s performances against Chelsea and current champions Man Utd can you really say that their position would be as healthy without the Dutchman. His performances throughout the season have been remarkable yet it has taken until now for pundits to pick up on it at all.

Similarly Joe Hart has been on the form of his life this season. Manchester City’s defensive record is the best in the league so far this year but player for player their defenders are not the best in the league. What makes them so effective? Joe Hart. Before Szczesny Arsenal were enjoying a torrid time defensively in domestic competitions and as much as that was down to their style of play it was also down to their goalkeeper. Their defenders during this time were actually very good (Toure, Gallas, Vermaelen, Clichy, Sagna) but the lack of confidence that they played with was born out of a mistrust of the abilities of Fabianski and Almunia. Similarly Ledley King recently spoke about how although Parker is getting most of the credit for his defensive work at Spurs new keeper Brad Friedel has done wonders for the team. King championed both his calming presence and his experience as vital factors is Tottenham’s defensive stability this season. It’s not just at the top of the table either where it counts. Does anyone really think that Wigan would have stayed up last year had it not been for the season-long heroics of Ali Al Habsi who, game after game, made vital contributions to the cause; far more than Wigan’s strikers did arguably. Goalie will always be the position that no kid wants to play in the park, and who’d blame them, but that doesn’t mean we should go through life ignoring their applaudable exploits and scrutinising every mistake they make. Hart, Krul and Szczesny are proving themselves to be three of the best young keepers in world football at the moment, perhaps it’s about time fans started to take notice.

Larrea confirms interest in United ace

Antonio Valencia’s agent has confirmed that Juventus are interested in signing the South American in January, but he has no thoughts of leaving Manchester United.

The Ecuador international has found first-team opportunities more of a commodity this term due to the summer signing of Ashley Young, and reports in Italy have detailed that the Turin giants will make a move for the winger come the new year.

Despite this, the former Wigan wideman’s representative has confirmed that the player has no intentions of leaving Old Trafford, and is eager to fight his way back into Sir Alex Ferguson’s starting XI.

“I am aware of rumours of Juventus’ interest, but he is very happy in Manchester and I see it as very difficult that he leaves United,” Diego Herrera Larrea told Mirror Football.

“Antonio recently signed a new four-year deal, and both he and his family are settled and well living in the city, and playing for a big club.

“For my part, there is nothing concrete. There has been interest from Italy, but I don’t think that Juve has spoken with United because I was not informed – though I cannot exclude it as a possibility,” he concluded.

Wembley 2018 … it’s our only hope of repeating 1966

Three days from now we’ll know whether England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup has been successful. Let’s hope that our campaign team have done all the right deals and agreed to play the right amount of prestige friendlies to win the day. If we do get the nod, though, let’s forget any pretence that the FA have succeeded because England have the best stadia, the best infrastructure and the most passionate fans. I reckon we do have all of those things (give or take the M25) but the whole bidding process seems questionable and has little to do with which nation is capable of staging the best football tournament.

By the time 2018 comes round, it will be 52 years since England last hosted a World Cup. And the main reason I hope we get it again, is that it will be the only chance we’ll ever have of winning it again in my lifetime. It’s no coincidence that England’s only major trophy was earned on home soil, or that our only other excellent tournament performance, possibly even better than ‘66, came at Euro 96. Home advantage makes a massive difference.

In 1966, we were helped by playing every match at Wembley, a stadium we all knew so well. But the main reason home advantage is so crucial is the refereeing. Had England played Argentina in Buenos Aires in the 1966 quarter-final, I certainly don’t think their skipper, Antonio Rattin, would have been sent off. And if the final had been in Germany, does anyone really believe Geoff Hurst’s second goal would have been given?

Maybe I’m just a natural sceptic. I mean, I didn’t even believe the story that Pickles the dog found the Jules Rimet Trophy when it was stolen before the 1966 tournament. They reckon he discovered it hidden in some bushes, but when I take my dog for a walk, he never goes into bushes even for the call of nature. Pickles, for me, was a fraud. He’d taken a bung of a few dog biscuits and provided an alibi, when the whole situation seemed thoroughly fishy. Yet it’s all part of the 1966 folklore which is still with us today.

That was the first commercial World Cup. The previous one, in 1962, was a complete shambles in Chile. With the World Cup Willy mascot, and matches televised live, the modern tournament was born in England – just as the game itself was born here a century earlier. The tournament is so much bigger now and next week’s announcement will have an even more major impact if it goes our way.

After another bleak night at Wembley against France on Wednesday, it would give our national team the shot in the arm it is crying out for and something to aspire to. The one thing a 2018 World Cup would not have is the mystique of 1966. North Korea, in particular, were cherished by English fans – complete unknowns and rank outsiders, they beat Italy and were 3-0 up against Portugal in the quarter-final before they blew it. But we were so in the dark about them that some of us simply couldn’t believe that there was such a thing as a 6ft Korean bloke. We assumed they would all be 5ft at the most.

I’d love to see the magic of the World Cup return to England, even though the tournament has grown too large for its own good, with 32 teams in the finals. And yet you only have to watch the voting in the Eurovision Song Contest every year to realise that we are not a popular nation. I’ll be accused of being unpatriotic for saying it, but I’ll be tuning in to the 2018 decision with blind hope rather than expectation.

Mayor spreads the love to bring Valentines joy to Deepdale

After a couple of indifferent performances, we finally got our first win under Graham Westley with a 1-0 win at home to Hartlepool. A Danny Mayor thunderbolt with just 15 minutes left settling a game which lacked much in the way of entertainment.  However it there was a large amount of effort and determination from a North End side where a lot of the players had made less than 20 appearances for the club and a handful of them were making their debuts for the team.

For the first time this season I wasn’t particularly nervous as we defended the one goal lead apart from a really hairy moment in stoppage time when Hartlepool should have scored had it not been for Nicky Hunt, the goalpost and wasteful finishing (in that order!).

After seeing games where the opposition has scored late on to nick points (Scunthorpe United in August and Oldham Athletic in October) it is really encouraging to see us close out a 1-0 win. Teams with aspirations of the top 6 do this and it shows how Westley has been improving the fitness levels of the squad although there is still a long way to go but the early signs are encouraging so far.

With Sheffield United away on Saturday, who are in formidable form at the moment, it was crucial that we got the three points last night. Westley wouldn’t want to have been waiting too long for that first win as after a while it can start to be a massive pressure. It took previous manager Phil Brown to thirteen games to get his first win and this was one of the main reasons why we were relegated. When he was appointed manager we were 4 points from safety but by the time we won 3-0 at Scunthorpe in March we were almost 13 points from safety, something we would fail to claw back before May.

Being realistic I think we will be very lucky to come from a ground where only 2 teams have won this season with a result, but at least there are signs that Westley is turning the rot around. However it is a very long turnaround and it is important we don’t get ahead of ourselves and think we are bound for the play offs because of a 1-0 win. Hartlepool were one of the form teams and on a good unbeaten run before the game, but with time the team will gel and become more tactically aware and with that comes better performances. Then the results will start to come which at the very least gives fans reason to believe that next season could be a fantastic one.
