Transfer insider Dean Jones has dropped a fresh update on Aston Villa’s permanent pursuit to sign Philippe Coutinho.

Steven Gerrard made the former Liverpool star his first signing as Villa manager, with the Brazilian joining on loan from Barcelona. The 29-year-old has gone on to impress back in England, contributing to seven goals in 11 appearances.

Villa managed to negotiate an option to buy Coutinho at the end of the season, believed to be in the region of £34m, but Johan Lange and co have seemingly asked the Europa League quarter-finalists if they can help further with a full-time switch.

The Latest: Jones’ comments on Coutinho

Talking to The Transfer Tavern, Jones claimed that Villa have ‘asked’ Barcelona if they could do ‘something’ when it comes to Coutinho’s final year under contract at the Nou Camp. The journalist stated:

“From what I understand, they’ve asked Barcelona about doing something over the last year of his deal there.”

The Verdict: Interesting…

Barcelona appear to be desperate to offload Coutinho for good and would reportedly be willing to accept a lower fee than the £34m figure upon which the clubs agreed in January.

Villa may well be aware of that, and with Coutinho on £480,000 per week at the Nou Camp, the Midlands club may well be asking Barcelona to release the playmaker from the final 12 months of his deal or lower a fee massively in order for Villa to finance a full-time move for him.

Newcastle have also been linked with his services recently, so there could be more twists and turns when it comes to Coutinho’s long-term future ahead of the summer transfer window.

Newcastle United have already made plans for the summer transfer window, according to The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder. 

The lowdown

Newcastle are working to secure Premier League survival and then proceed with the long-term project of new owners PIF. Their goal is to have eventually have the Magpies competing for the biggest honours in football.

The club spent just under £92m on new arrivals during the January transfer window, comfortably the highest outlay in the English top flight last month.

However, three of their four permanent signings perhaps shouldn’t be characterised as ‘long-term’, with Dan Burn, Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier all 29 or older and only signing two-and-a-half year contracts.

In an article for The Chronicle, Ryder wrote that figures in the Newcastle boardroom have told the publication that “plans are already in place for the summer in terms of signings”.

The journalist then tweeted a link to that article, with the additional comment of: “Newcastle set for great escape and sources predict exciting summer window”.

The verdict

What kind of players might Newcastle go after?

They are expected to reignite their interest in a number of players who they failed to land in January. For instance, Ryder recently revealed that scouts were still watching Lille’s Sven Botman, and The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has said that Reims Hugo Ekitike remains a target.

In terms of new names, a report from 90min claimed that the Magpies are monitoring the situation of Kalvin Phillips at Leeds United, while transfer insider Dean Jones feels that an audacious move for Harry Kane shouldn’t be ruled out.

With Ryder hinting at an “exciting” summer in the transfer market and that plans are already in motion at the club in that regard, Newcastle fans may be giddy with anticipation as to what lies in store in terms of potential incomings later this year.

The Champions League Twenty20 governing council has named the venues for the second edition of the tournament to be held this year in South Africa. The Wanderers stadium in Johannesburg, St. Georges Park in Port Elizabeth, Kingsmead in Durban and Centurion Park in Centurion will host the competition that will feature ten of the top domestic Twenty20 teams, from September 10 to 26.”South Africa is widely regarded as a top international host nation, having successfully hosted most major international cricket events in recent years,” said Shashank Manohar, the league chairman. “The Governing Council is satisfied with the four venues that Cricket South Africa have recommended. We are excited about the future of CLT20, and call on the South African public to come out and support the second edition of this tournament, which features the best of the best.”Gerald Majola, the CEO of CSA, was pleased with South Africa getting the opportunity to host another major sporting event. “CSA is proud to be hosting CLT20 in what is an iconic year for South Africa with the soccer World Cup currently being hosted here. We are encouraged by the eagerness of the four host venues to make this tournament a success.”CLT20 has already picked the interest of South African fans, especially with the Lions and Warriors (South African teams participating in the tournament) having qualified for this prestigious event. O futuro de Yerry Mina começará a ser definido nesta sexta-feira, quando o zagueiro colombiano se apresenta ao Palmeiras para a pré-temporada. A diretoria espera a chegada dele para conversar sobre a possibilidade de transferência imediata para o Barcelona.

Mina e Borja foram autorizados pelo clube a se apresentarem com dois dias de atraso para o início dos trabalhos. O venezuelano Alejandro Guerra não conseguiu voltar ao Brasil por um problema no aeroporto e também é esperado nesta sexta.

– O Palmeiras é obrigado a liberar Mina para o Barcelona agora?
Não. O contrato do zagueiro com o Palmeiras dá preferência de compra ao clube espanhol, mas ela só começa a valer depois da Copa do Mundo de 2018. A partir do meio do ano, o Barcelona pode pagar 9 milhões (R$ 35 milhões) de euros e levá-lo a hora que quiser.

– O que o Barcelona precisa fazer, então, para levá-lo em janeiro?
Apresentar uma proposta que convença o Palmeiras. Os catalães já avisaram que estão dispostos a pagar mais do que os 9 milhões de euros para que o defensor se transfira agora. A diretoria do Verdão não confirma quanto foi oferecido, mas diz ter respondido que a intenção não é liberar Mina neste momento.

– Se o Palmeiras não quer liberar Mina agora, por que o negócio ainda pode acontecer?
Porque o Palmeiras quer ouvir do jogador qual é a vontade dele. Se Mina disser que deseja ir para o Barcelona imediatamente, o clube aceitará abrir a negociação com os espanhóis.

– E qual é a vontade de Mina?
O zagueiro sempre se esquivou do assunto publicamente, mas o Palmeiras sabe que a ida para o Barcelona é um sonho dele e de Jair Mina, seu tio e representante. A vinda de Mina para o Brasil, aliás, só foi possível por causa da cláusula de preferência ao clube espanhol. Ele estava indo do Santa Fe (COL) para a Alemanha, mas mudou de ideia depois que um dirigente do Barça telefonou, a pedido de Alexandre Mattos, para explicar que o Verdão poderia ser um trampolim para a Espanha.

– O Palmeiras ficaria com todo o dinheiro da venda?
O ex-presidente Paulo Nobre pagou R$ 11,7 milhões para contratar Mina em 2016. Quando vender o jogador, precisa devolver este dinheiro com uma pequena correção. O lucro é do clube, que tem 80% dos direitos econômicos e deseja receber mais do que os 9 milhões de euros pré-estipulados para liberá-lo agora. Os outros 20% são do Santa Fe (COL).

Everton made an unsuccessful attempt to sign Luka Jovic on transfer deadline day, Fabrizio Romano has revealed. 

The lowdown

It was a largely positive deadline day for the Toffees as they announced the appointment of Frank Lampard as their new manager before sealing the signings of Donny van de Beek from Manchester United (on loan) and Dele Alli from Tottenham.

They finished January with five new additions, having recruited Vitaliy Mykolenko, Nathan Patterson and Anwar El-Ghazi earlier in the month. Only Watford brought in more fresh faces among Premier League clubs in January, and only Newcastle United and Liverpool spent more money (via Transfermarkt).

At 9:30pm on Monday night, Romano took to Twitter to claim that Everton had made a last-gasp bid to try and sign Luka Jovic from Real Madrid, but their advances were flatly rejected.

The journalist tweeted: “Real Madrid have turned down Everton approaches for Luka Jović today. No chance.”

The verdict

Was it a big blow to miss out on Jovic?

Everton have only scored 24 goals in their first 20 Premier League matches, but that disappointing return can largely be put down to the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The Toffees’ top scorer from last season has only been fit enough to start six league games so far this term, which clearly has negated the team’s attacking threat.

Jovic, who has 57 senior career goals at the age of 24, may have been regarded as a more effective backup than Salomon Rondon, who has only netted once in 708 minutes of top-flight football in 2021/22, but the Serbian may not have accepted being a substitute at Goodison Park.

Perhaps the £18m-rated forward, who earns £152,000 per week in the Spanish capital, will be on Everton’s radar if Calvert-Lewin is lured to Arsenal, having been linked with the north Londoners lately.
