Dhawan, Rahane put Rest of India in charge

Two centuries – an aggressive, substantial one from Shikhar Dhawan and a solid, unbeaten one from Ajinkya Rahane – almost ensured that Rest of India couldn’t lose the Irani Cup outright. They scored quickly on the opening day against Ranji Trophy champions Rajasthan, lost only three wickets, and amassed 400 by stumps in Jaipur.Dhawan scored 177 off 165 balls, an innings that contained 32 fours and one six. Having been dropped from India’s one-day squad after the tour of West Indies, Dhawan did not waste this opportunity to stake his claim again. He added 190 runs for the second wicket with Rahane, who adapted smoothly to the change in format. Having impressed during the limited-overs games in England, Rahane switched into five-day mode and batted with patience to end the day on 117 off 212 balls. He will have to revert to one-day mode against England after the Irani Cup tie is settled.Rajasthan’s bowlers struggled, with last season’s hero Deepak Chahar going wicketless for 120 runs in 21 overs. His new-ball partner Aniket Choudhary also conceded more than four an over in 17 overs.Dhawan began to attack as early as the day’s fifth over, when he hit four consecutive boundaries off Chahar. The first two were driven through mid-off, the next two pulled and cut as the bowler dropped short. The other opener, Abhinav Mukund, wasn’t as quick, his first fours coming in the 12th over when he drove and glided Choudhary down the ground and through gully. Dhawan reached his 50 off the first ball after drinks, off 51 balls.Rajasthan’s first bit of relief came in the 19th over, when Mukund edged medium-pacer Sumit Mathur on to his stumps. Rest of India were 77 for 1. Choudhary should have dismissed Dhawan, on 80, in the final over before lunch but Chahar misjudged the top-edge at long-leg. The Dhawan-Rahane stand took Rest of India to lunch on 122 for 1.There was little joy for Rajasthan in the second session. Dhawan got to his century off 119 deliveries, sweeping offspinner Madhur Khatri for two, and celebrated with a six over midwicket next ball. He and Rahane added 145 runs to their partnership and only shortly before tea were they separated. Dhawan had clouted Chahar down the ground for three successive boundaries but in the next over, from Khatri, he missed a slog sweep and was bowled. Rest of India went into tea on 280 for 2.Choudhary began the final session positively for Rajasthan, trapping Manish Pandey lbw for 16. The dismissal cut short a bright start, for Pandey had struck four boundaries during his brief stay. Rahane then led a period of consolidation for Rest of India, moving steadily towards his century, which he reached with a straight drive to the boundary off Chahar. He had a solid partner in Parthiv Patel, who was unbeaten on 55, and they added 113 runs for the fourth wicket before stumps.

Pakistan ease to seven-wicket win

Pakistan surged to seven-wicket victory in Bulawayo, as Zimbabwe paid the price for throwing away ten sessions of hard work in one poor session on the fourth day

Pakistan surged to a seven-wicket victory in Bulawayo as Zimbabwe paid the price for throwing away ten sessions of hard work in one poor session on the fourth day. Tatenda Taibu and Kyle Jarvis had kept Pakistan waiting with a 66-run stand for the eighth wicket yesterday, but Taibu’s exit without any addition to the score signalled the end of Zimbabwe’s resistance. Pakistan lost their top three batsmen in the chase, but the paltry target of 88 was insufficient to trouble them.Though the opposition wasn’t the toughest, it was a significant result for Pakistan since it gave them consecutive Test wins for the first time since 2005, following their series-levelling triumph against West Indies in Basseterre. After skittling out the top eight Zimbabwean wickets in 27.3 overs, Pakistan were made to wait for exactly another 27.3 overs for their next wicket, and the last one followed without much fuss. The speed of Zimbabwe’s capitulation came as a surprise, given how resilient Taibu and Jarvis had been in the lead-up to stumps yesterday. With an in-and-out field aimed at keeping Taibu off strike, Aizaz Cheema, celebrating his 32nd birthday, delivered the last ball of his opening over well wide of off stump. Anxious to get the single, Taibu looked to steer away from his body and guided the ball into the wicketkeeper’s gloves. In his next over, Cheema removed Chris Mpofu with a fuller length, making him edge to Adnan Akmal again. The double-strike gave Cheema an eight-wicket match haul – the second best by a Pakistan debutant. One man’s gain was another’s loss, though, as Mohammad Hafeez was left stranded on four wickets – one more would have made him the 27th player, and only the second since 2000, to achieve the double of a century and five wickets in the same game.Backed by the confidence of a strong all-round showing, Hafeez began the chase in attacking fashion. He welcomed Ray Price, the one man likely to cause problems on a wearing pitch, with a lofted drive for four and a slog-sweep for six. Taufeeq Umar fell fending an effort ball from Jarvis through to Taibu, but Hafeez kept playing his shots. He raced to 38 off 44 balls before Price managed to bowl him round the legs off an edge. Azhar Ali and Younis Khan took Pakistan to the brink before Azhar betrayed his inexperience. Normally known for his patience, Azhar gifted his wicket to Price while attempting to hurry Pakistan across the line.Pakistan’s most experienced pair – Younis and Misbah-ul-Haq – ensured there was no further loss and they surged home minutes before lunch. It capped Waqar Younis’ stint as Pakistan coach with a win that was hard-fought, yet clinical. The result also underlined Zimbabwe’s standing in the Test format: while they aren’t entirely lacking on the skills front, they are still some way away from becoming a top-flight side.

Dilshan puts onus on fast bowlers

Tillakaratne Dilshan has said the future of Sri Lanka’s bowling lay in the hands of the fast men

Tillakaratne Dilshan says the future of Sri Lanka’s bowling is in the hands of the quicks•Associated Press

Tillakaratne Dilshan has said the future of Sri Lanka’s bowling lay in the hands of the fast men, and not spinners who have been their traditional strength.”In the past 20 years or so we have depended on the spin of [Muttiah] Muralitharan for our success,” Dilshan said before the team left for the UAE to meet Pakistan in a series of three Tests, five ODIs and a one-off Twenty20 International. “Murali is a bowler who can take six-eight wickets in an innings, we have still not found anyone who can do it consistently as him.”The future for our success lies with our fast bowlers. In the spin department only Rangana Herath has proved himself a top-quality bowler. If we hope to win Test matches we will have to have the support of the other spinners as well.”Sri Lanka suffered a blow when one of their most promising young fast bowlers Shaminda Eranga was ruled out of the tour with a shoulder injury to his bowling arm. He has been replaced by allrounder Kosala Kulasekara.Sri Lanka are taking five fast bowlers and two spinners to the UAE. Dilshan said that he was not duly worried that Sri Lanka had yet to record a win in their previous 11 Tests. “We have lost two matches and drawn nine and that is not a bad record. We lost the two Tests to very good sides England and Australia, one of them was due to a poor batting performance at Cardiff and in the other at Galle the toss played a crucial role. If you look back on the rest of our performances I am quite satisfied.”Dilshan said that he was confident his team would be able to end their win drought in UAE. “Pakistan has a mix of experienced and young talent in their line-up. It won’t be easy beating them but it will be a good challenge. I think we can take on that challenge and beat them.”We have not played Test matches in the UAE but we have watched videos of the Tests played there by Pakistan. I don’t know what the conditions and the pitch will be like playing a Test series during this time of the year there.”Since taking over the reins from Kumar Sangakkara, Dilshan first had former Australia cricketer Stuart Law as interim coach for the tour to England and then former Sri Lanka fast bowler Rumesh Ratnayake playing a similar role in the recently concluded home series against Australia, before Sri Lanka Cricket eventually found a permanent successor to Trevor Bayliss who quit at the end of the 2011 World Cup in April.”I have captained Sri Lanka with two different coaches in England and at home against Australia and now Marsh is the third. I never had an opportunity to sit down with one coach and discuss any long-term plans for the team,” Dilshan told .”Marsh is contracted for two years and he is a respected player and coach and I hope we can build on a good partnership and carry Sri Lanka cricket forward,” he said.”I have not spoken to him at length, the way I see it I think his presence will benefit a lot of youngsters and we can get a lot out of him to develop our cricket. While working together only we can find shortcomings and overcome them.”

ICC moots sponsors to fund revamped DRS

The ICC will look for sponsors for the DRS to overcome the financial hurdles that less wealthy cricket boards will face in implementing the cost-intensive referral system

Sharda Ugra in Hong Kong30-Jun-2011

The ICC may seek a sponsor to fund DRS, Haroon Lorgat has said•AFP

The ICC will look for sponsors for the DRS to overcome the financial hurdles that less wealthy cricket boards will face in implementing the cost-intensive referral system now mandatory in international cricket.”There is the possibility that we could raise a sponsor to cover the cost of the DRS,” ICC CEO, Haroon Lorgat, told ESPNcricinfo. The chief executives’ committee agreed on Monday to make a modified version of DRS mandatory in all internationals, with the use of the ball-tracking technology made optional, and Lorgat said he could see a situation “where we may well cover all costs of the technology”.The cost of the DRS is currently estimated at $5000 per day, with broadcasters, technology providers and home boards in a constant debate about who should bear the cost. The minimum requirements for the tweaked DRS are the expensive infra-red cameras and the audio tracking devices, and Lorgat said the resulting uniformity – which doesn’t exist in ball-tracking technology – was adequate to seek commercial support for the system. “It is still sufficient to be able to commercialise it and find a sponsor that would be interested.”The uneven acceptance of the DRS in the past, with the BCCI resisting its implementation in bilateral series involving India, had made financial backing for the system difficult, Lorgat said. “You cannot sell a product if there’s uncertainty around its use and that was a stumbling block in the past.”Lorgat said he did not believe that the new ruling, which omitted the ball-tracker technology from the list of mandatory requirements, would make the system inconsistent. The ICC, he said, had worked its way through a process that had begun with differences over an aspect of the review system and was keen to address the concerns of its doubters, in this case the BCCI. “It is incumbent on all of us who are trying to implement (it) and trying to find agreement to work towards getting there … if that means we have to convince certain people who are unconvinced about the accuracy and the reliability of the ball-tracking technology, that’s what we have agreed to do. But where we have got absolute agreement, we’ve all agreed to install that.”The question of using only one part of the ball-tracker technology, like the pitch mat to check where the ball had landed, was not raised, Lorgat said, “There wasn’t complete satisfaction with the use of the ball-tracking technology and we’ve just left that out.”The use of the ball-tracker based on bilateral agreements between boards, Lorgat said, would let those who believed in its veracity use the system. Over the next few months, he said the ICC would carry out an independent assessment to provide the back-up of the ball tracker’s accuracy and reliability. “I think we must just be patient for the next few months until we’ve done that exercise and hopefully we come to a point where everybody is satisfied with its accuracy.”The assessment, he said, would be thorough, because “if there are people who are happy or unhappy about the technology, we have got to disprove that and so I’m not keen to take (only) elements of it (the ball tracker) before we come up with a scientific evaluation.” He said there was no time-frame for this assessment of the ball tracker.

'No-one comes here and destroys me on my pitch'

In what was undoubtedly the most delightful press conference of the tour, Anthony Martin presented his rainbow personality.

Sriram Veera14-Jun-2011Anthony Martin is an original. In what was undoubtedly the most delightful press conference of the tour, Martin presented his rainbow personality. Passionate. Sentimental. Humourous. Serious. Emotional. Slightly off his rocker. Naïve. Sincere. Fresh. Utter fun.It started with the most rollicking understatement of the tour and it also had an over-the-top, theatrical, warning in the middle. “It [his four-wicket haul] feels good. I may not show it on the outside but I feel very good inside, you know,” he said. Not show it outside? Seriously? Really? Martin was bouncing in joy. Happiness exploded from him. It was almost infectious. You would think characters like Martin don’t come any more in this day and age but here he was, parading his colourful character. It didn’t feel like a performance; he was just being himself.”No-one comes here and destroys me on my pitch,” he said. “This is my pitch. I don’t care who they are. I am here to destroy whoever I play against. I am so glad that I did it against India, the world champions.”There was no trace of arrogance. The way he said the words you couldn’t even accuse him of being pompous. Neither were they meant to be humorous. It was light hearted sure but it appeared he meant every word of it. Yet, no one could take offence. He is sentimental. A local journalist asked him about the impact of his mother. “Sometimes just to speak about my mom I want to shed tears. She has always looked out for me. She supports me all the time. She was in the crowd today with my daughter and girlfriend.” Sentimentality gives way to humour without any warning. “I am not married,” he says with a laugh. “I might not ever. I may also.””I don’t like losing. That ‘L” word is not in my vocabulary. Only Love and Lord. Not Losing”•Associated Press

Now, he was on a roll and it appeared he couldn’t have stopped himself, even if he tried. “I am sorry that Sachin and Sehwag weren’t here,” he continued. No-one had brought up those two names. “I have played against Sehwag one time before. I took a catch off him and he didn’t want to move. He stood on the pitch, leaning on his bat and I was celebrating. I went all around the park.” Laughter. That game was back in 2006. It was where Martin’s confidence grew and a cricketing career took the next step. “I took the wicket of Rahul Dravid, caught at slip. I took another left-hander , don’t remember his name. I took two wickets for not much. After getting those wickets I told myself I can play international cricket. I have seen Dravid on TV destroying attacks all over the world and he came here and I destroyed him. He hit a four first ball and then gone! So I tell myself I can play.”He might come across a fun eccentric character but he is a severely passionate and hard-working man. He used to be a fast bowler in his under-15 days but an accident injured his back and he couldn’t bowl fast anymore. So he tried off spin but the under-19 coach in Antigua told him he had to try something else since they had two established offspinners. “I said ok. I switched to leg spin … I had to find something to stay in the game. I used to warm-up with legspin when I was a pacer and so I tried my hand at it.”His uncle was his chief mentor of his life. As he puts it his unique way, “My uncle didn’t tolerate any crap. He was always serious. If you notice I am always serious too. I don’t make jokes when the game is going on. When it’s on my only friends are my team-mates.”Antigua is where he grew up and he was disappointed not to play in the fourth ODI. It spurred him on. “I went back to the hotel and thought the coach didn’t think fit for me to play. I tell myself that whenever I get the opportunity to play I am going to show that I deserve to be there in the eleven.”More motivation was also at hand. “I didn’t want the whitewash or the Indian wash!” He ended the press meet with more delightful gems. “I don’t like losing. That ‘L” word is not in my vocabulary. Only Love and Lord. Not Losing.”
