Simon Katich has announced his retirement from first-class cricket in Australia, ending a Sheffield Shield career that spanned 16 seasons for Western Australia and New South Wales.Katich, 36, will play on for Hampshire this year and his decision leaves the door open to continue his county career if he chooses to do so next year. He has also committed to playing for the Perth Scorchers in the Champions League Twenty20 later this year but said in a statement that with a young family and a desire for extended time at home, he had decided to reassess his priorities.Just over 12 months ago, Katich was considered an important member of the Test side but he was the primary victim of a move for change following the 2010-11 Ashes debacle. Katich lost his Cricket Australia contract last year and with it any realistic chance of adding to his 56 Tests, especially after he lashed out at the way Australian cricket was run during a frank press conference.His replacement at the top of the order, Phillip Hughes, was unable to hold his place but Katich was not called on again, and the Australians are now using a David Warner-Ed Cowan opening partnership in Test cricket. Katich will leave the game having scored 4188 Test runs at 45.03, while he can still add to his first-class tally of 19,667 runs this county season.A long-time captain of New South Wales after moving from Western Australia, Katich lost the state leadership last summer as the Blues looked to blood younger leaders. However, he kept scoring runs for New South Wales and made 483 at 43.90 in the Sheffield Shield last season.

Apesar dos bons números, a tendência é de que o São Paulo tenha dificuldades para repetir os do ano passado , quando colocou mais de 1 milhão de torcedores em suas partidas como mandante. Como o time foi eliminado da Copa do Brasil e da Copa Sul-Americana precocemente, há apenas mais 8 jogos no Morumbi. Para repetir a marca, o Tricolor precisa colocar, em média, mais de 40 mil por jogo.

Yorkshire may well have made a public declaration of their desire to play attacking cricket in the aftermath of last week’s stunning victory at Bristol but sometimes even the most cavalier of intentions are defeated by the weather and their draw against Hampshire resulted in a more old-fashioned finish.As final days go, there could not have been a bigger contrast between the thrills and spills of Yorkshire’s successful chase of 400 and the sedate close to play at Headingley, with both sides seeming to accept little chance of a positive result almost as soon as bad light and drizzle delayed the start until 12.30pm, losing 24 overs from the day’s allocation.The time lost ensured a traditional final-day’s fare without the prospect of either county winning, and both sides were happy to go through the motions once Hampshire resumed 49 runs ahead on 21 for 1. Yorkshire did make some impression on the scoreboard, Iain Wardlaw finding Jimmy Adams’ edge shortly after a delayed lunch, but otherwise both teams played out time.Hampshire grumbled about the timing of Yorkshire’s declaration the previous day, with captain Adams claiming: “It could have kept more options open if they had declared earlier, but we had to concentrate on our own game to bowl them out and, unfortunately, we weren’t able to do that.” What sort of target Hampshire would have been comfortable setting after the pyrotechnics of Bristol is also open to speculation.Yorkshire were happy to rotate their bowlers, and indeed used seven in total during a day’s play which must have been frustrating for the handful of spectators, who at least had the chance to witness Jonny Bairstow’s maiden Test innings from the Long Room as a result of the delayed start.Once play did resume, Michael Carberry set the tone by taking 35 minutes to hit his first runs of the day and batting for nearly three hours to finish unbeaten on 61, when both sides accepted the draw with Hampshire 219 runs ahead on 191 for 2.At least those present got their first chance to see Mitchell Starc, the Australia left-arm fast bowler, in a Yorkshire sweater for the first time. I don’t think picking him for this match would have given him the best chance to succeed.”He’s a great lad who works incredibly hard and brings that X-factor. He has genuine pace and he can bowl 90mph and swing the ball and anyone who bowls that pace and swings it is going to be a dangerous customer.”Instead, 22-year-old Starc will make his debut in Sunday’s CB40 match against Derbyshire Falcons at Headingley – the first of three such matches in the next week – before making his first Championship start at home to Northamptonshire in a fortnight.Yorkshire are still to determine how long Starc will be at their disposal following his call-up to the Australia A squad to tour England later this summer. Assuming he is not also required for a pre-tour training camp, Starc will definitely miss three Championship matches, up to four CB40 games and a T20 quarter-final, should Yorkshire qualify, so he is keen to maximise his involvement with Yorkshire while he can.”It’s been a bit of back and forth but I’m glad to be here now,” Starc said. “I’ve had a few sessions with the seconds and hopefully I can get out there and play a bit of cricket tomorrow. When I finally got here and got settled the sleeping patterns weren’t too bad. I’m a little bit fatigued but sleeping wise I’m pretty good. I’m just glad to be here, running around and I’m raring to go.”

Fans in Sri Lanka may still be coming to terms with the narrow defeat in the CB series finals, those in India may still be coming to terms with the retirement of one of their greatest batsmen, but for fans in Bangladesh, the Asia Cup can’t start soon enough. Tickets went on sale four days ago, and the response has been hearteningly enthusiastic.Another sign of the fervour for the tournament was in evidence at Shakib Al Hasan’s press conference today. It was a routine pre-match media interaction, but a horde of around 70 reporters, photographers and cameramen, a large proportion being locals, filled out the press conference hall at the Shere Bangla stadium.The zeal for cricket remains high though it has been a dispiriting 12 months for Bangladesh cricket, with many reverses after the high hopes going into the 2011 World Cup. Shakib was bullish about Bangladesh’s chances in the Asia Cup. “Our target? To be the champions,” he said. “We want to play our best cricket, though we are not able to do it all the time. It is possible at home. This tournament is a good place for us to know where we stand in world cricket at the moment.”There hasn’t been any international cricket in Bangladesh for three months, but Shakib felt the Bangladesh Premier League had made them ready for the Asia Cup. “We had very good preparation, not as a team, but in domestic competitions. If we play to our potential, I’m hopeful we can do well.”Bangladesh were swept aside by Pakistan in the one-dayers three months ago. Their only victory over Pakistan remains the famous one in the 1999 World Cup. “We haven’t won against Pakistan for a long time but in the last series we had a good chance in the third ODI,” Shakib said. “We did well in the second Test.
