Dan James value plummets at Leeds

Leeds United broke their club-record fee during the summer transfer window but things have not gone to plan ever since.

The Yorkshire giants find themselves sitting perilously in 16th place, just five points above the relegation zone, having gone close to challenging for a place in Europe last season.

Marcelo Bielsa has suffered from persistent injury problems off the pitch throughout the entire campaign but that doesn’t completely excuse their poor and inconsistent displays on it.

He finally got his man, landing Daniel James from Manchester United in a £30m deal, some 18 months after his move from Swansea City in the Championship fell through.

However, the 24-year-old Wales international has been hugely underwhelming – a worrying sign considering the considerable sum that chairman Andrea Radrizzani invested in him.

Of the ten players to have started at least ten of their 17 league games, James ranks seventh-worst for average WhoScored rating (6.49), having provided only one goal and one assist in 14 appearances.

As a creative influence in the side, there are seven better options, with the 5 foot 7 winger offering only 0.8 key passes per game, whilst he has struggled to deliver goals in the absence of leading talisman Patrick Bamford.

Despite averaging the third-highest amount of shots (1.9 per game), he has found the net just once, which is rather appalling, especially considering he scored five times for United last term.

That shocking form has led to plenty of criticism, particularly from Darren Bent, who slammed him to Football Insider: “The only thing about Dan James at times, for me, he’s a little bit headless.

“He’s shown great potential, when he first went to United he played really well, scored a few goals but at times he for me he’s fouled or he shoots sometimes when he should pass it, he’ll pass when he should shoot.”

As such, he has seen his value decrease immensely with Transfermarkt now rating him at just £16.2m. Leeds’ fifth most-expensive player.

That’s a decrease of 46% in the space of just six months, a worrying prospect and one that is sure to leave Radrizzani absolutely fuming. Director of football Victor Orta has had a mare with this transfer, thus far.

Ricky Ponting has declared himself a certain starter for the Sydney Testbeginning on Sunday despite suffering more pain than he expected in his hurtelbow during the win at the MCG. Australia have named an unchanged 12-mansquad for the second Test, resisting the urge to add Steven Smith as a secondspinner following Pakistan’s struggles against Nathan Hauritz in Melbourne.Clint McKay was retained in the group but is expected to be 12th man again, following a bowling performance Ponting described as the best from an AustralianTest team in a couple of years. It included Hauritz’s first five-wicket haulin first-class cricket, and though Ponting said a secondspinner would be an option for Sydney, the selectors decided against naming Smith.Smith was added at the MCG as cover for Hauritz, who had a groin injury inthe lead-up to the Test. Smith had enjoyed a net session with Shane Warne which Ponting was certain would help his development. “I know he would havegot a lot out of the session the other day,” Ponting said. “Any time anyyoung spinner can spend some quality time with Warney one on one is goingto be of great benefit to them.”Ponting will lead Australia as they aim to take the series 2-0 in Sydney, despite his injury troubling him through the Boxing Day Test. He said he was not in any doubt at all for the second Test.”I’ve had a bit of pain in both innings to tell you the truth,” Ponting said.”It probably flared up more than I was hoping it would halfway through myfirst innings but I declared myself fit to play and I’ve just got to putup with it and get on with it from there. That’s all I could do. I’ve continuedto have treatment through this game and will the next few days give myselfevery opportunity to recover as well as I can for the next Test.”Australia squad Shane Watson, Simon Katich, Ricky Ponting (capt),Michael Hussey, Michael Clarke, Marcus North, Brad Haddin (wk), MitchellJohnson, Nathan Hauritz, Peter Siddle, Doug Bollinger, Clint McKay.

The uncapped fast bowler Trent Copeland could be in line for his state debut after New South Wales chose him in a 12-man squad for the Sheffield Shield game against Queensland at the SCG starting on Friday. Copeland was called in due to the absence of Josh Hazlewood, who is with the Under-19 World Cup squad, and Nathan Bracken, who is making a steady return from knee surgery.Bracken played in the Blues’ FR Cup loss to South Australia on Tuesday but is being given more time to prepare for a comeback to the more demanding four-day game. It has opened the door for Copeland, 23, to come in from outside the contracted squad having been the leading wicket-taker in the Sydney grade competition this summer. The Blues will also be without Usman Khawaja, their leading run scorer in the Sheffield Shield this season, after he was ruled out with a hairline fracture of the thumb. Khawaja suffered the problem while fielding in a grade match on Saturday and is expected to be out of action for three weeks.Simon Katich, who is set to play his first Sheffield Shield game since November, will take back the captaincy duties from Moises Henriques. Peter Forrest has replaced the omitted Ben Rohrer for a game that gives New South Wales the chance to lift themselves off the bottom of the table.New South Wales squad Phillip Hughes, Phil Jaques, Simon Katich (capt), Steven Smith, Peter Forrest, David Warner, Moises Henriques, Daniel Smith (wk), Grant Lambert, Steve O’Keefe, Mitchell Starc, Trent Copeland.Queensland squad Ryan Broad, Nick Kruger, Wade Townsend, Lee Carseldine, Glen Batticciotto, Chris Simpson (capt), Chris Hartley (wk), Chris Swan, Ben Cutting, Luke Feldman, Cameron Boyce, Scott Walter.

GVB must not let McGregor leave for free

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst must avoid a major transfer mistake as no fewer than nine of his players are set to leave Ibrox for free in the summer upon the expiration of their contracts, one of these being goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

What’s the story?

The Gers have nine first-team players with contracts that are set to expire next summer, including first-choice goalkeeper Allan McGregor. Should any of these players fail to sign a contract extension before January, they will be allowed to speak to other clubs and sign a pre-contract agreement before joining for free in the summer.

The likes of McGregor, Steven Davis, Connor Goldson, Leon Balogun and Scott Arfield are all players with deals due to finish in June 2022.

It’s a major issue for the Dutch manager who will have to make a decision on the immediate futures of nine players, particularly ‘keeper McGregor who has been instrumental at Ibrox.

Rangers must keep McGregor

Despite being 39-years-old, McGregor is still one of the Scottish champions’ key players, having kept eight clean sheets in 21 appearances across all competitions this season.

Furthermore, the £13k-per-week Scotsman was instrumental in the Glasgow club’s title charge last season, keeping 16 clean sheets in 24 Premiership appearances – 67% of his games.

The goalkeeper has received plenty of praise whilst at Rangers, particularly of late when Livingstone manager David Martindale labelled McGregor as “fantastic” after the Scotsman had made a “game-changing save” against his side.

If McGregor, who was dubbed a “great servant” by Kevin Phillips, was to leave Ibrox after joining from Hull City in 2018, then 34-year-old back-up Jon McLaughlin may be given a look in, or the Gers would look to purchase a new first-choice ‘keeper. Regardless, Rangers will need to buy a new goalkeeper if the 39-year-old was to leave.

A pivotal member of van Bronckhorst’s squad, the Scottish champions should look to keep McGregor on the books for at least one more season and then seek out a suitable replacement. Losing him now, especially when he’s still so important, would unquestionably be a blunder by the club’s Dutch manager.

Smith plans more pain for Pakistan

South Africa are not done yet. Graeme Smith has promised they will keep piling on the runs to try and set up a series-levelling innings win over Pakistan

There is more toil ahead for Pakistan’s bowlers if South Africa’s plans come to fruition•Associated Press

South Africa are not done yet. Graeme Smith has promised they will keep piling on the runs to try and set up a series-levelling innings win over Pakistan. With Smith and AB de Villiers both well set and JP Duminy and Faf du Plessis to come, the South African captain said he wants to occupy the crease for the best of its batting time before putting Pakistan back in. “Ideally we want to bat once and allow the wicket to deteriorate a little more. It’s pretty dry at the moment,” Smith said.”The goal for today was to get ourselves into a winning position. Our innings was still in the balance when Dale went. But then the way AB transferred pressure made my life easier and we are in a good position now. We’ve got to come out tomorrow and work ourselves into a position where we feel we can win the game.”Smith said he does not have a total in mind where that position will be reached just yet. With the lead already at 361, South Africa are likely to continue batting past an advantage of 450 which will require Pakistan to bat better than they have in over a year to save the match. The last time Pakistan scored in excess of 450 was against Sri Lanka in June last year but Mohammad Akram, their bowling coach, has reason to believe they can do it again.”Winning the toss and batting first showed we were confident this was a batting pitch and will play very well for the next three days. The batsmen are optimistic they are can apply themselves as and bat for as long as possible in the next innings,” he said. Those words will not provide much solace to Pakistan fans who will wonder why, if Pakistan were so certain of batting out a long period, they imploded for 99 on the first day. Akram had no explanation for the dramatic turnaround from the way they played in Abu Dhabi.”That has been the case for a long time and we do accept that,” he said. “We are working on a lot of things and trying to overcome it but at the moment, that’s how it is.”Akram’s words are not that of a fighting man and one can hardly blame him for his slumped shoulders. His bowlers lacked the bite they did in the first Test and the few chances they created – like the one to have de Villiers caught off the first ball he faced – were squandered. Akram did not lay blame on his under-pressure attack, though. “The bowlers tried their best, especially Mohammad Irfan,” he said.Irfan bowled in the upper 140kph range throughout the day and ensured the South Africa batsmen were kept on the toes even though he had little reward. Irfan took the only wicket of the day and should have another in de Villiers, but instead Pakistan were made to toil. “When AB de Villiers is dropped, he makes you pay. It’s very difficult to stop his runs on a batting wicket,” Akram said.He did not think there was a lack of ideas or an over-reliance on Saeed Ajmal just a case of unhelpful conditions and a batting line-up that came good. “In Abu Dhabi, it wasn’t only Saeed Ajmal, everybody chipped in. The wicket was really good and both the players who were batting there are great cricketers,” he said.Smith agreed that South Africa were bound to get better after the 249 they made in the first innings of the first Test and was pleased to see how swiftly they turned their approach around. “We had to improve from there. 90% of the time this batting line-up produces the goods,” he said. “I felt we were a little soft in Abu Dhabi but we’ve had some good chats, worked on a few things like reverse swing and it paid off.”Now he wants to see his bowlers tighten the screws and finish Pakistan off. First, though, there’s a bit more batting to do.

Gul eyes return to competitive cricket

Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul has said he is eyeing a return to competitive cricket after a knee injury he suffered in South Africa kept him out of action for more than six months

Umar Gul has rued the absence of any competitive cricket in Pakistan currently to assess his fitness and form•AFP

Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul has said he is eyeing a return to competitive cricket after a knee injury he suffered in South Africa kept him out of action for more than six months. Gul suffered the injury in the second ODI of the series against South Africa and six weeks after undergoing a knee surgery in Australia in May, he started his rehabilitation programme at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.”I’m pretty optimistic of getting back the rhythm as I feel fine at the moment,” Gul told , a Pakistan daily. “It is just that there is no competition at present to find out the actual status of [my] fitness. Everything appears to be settling down. The knee is fine with no signs of ill-effects from the surgery I had a few months ago. Over the past 15 days, I have started bowling in the nets as well.”Pakistan’s next international series is next month, against South Africa again, and Gul said he has started bowling in the nets but the absence of any form of cricket currently has made it difficult for him to assess his fitness and form properly. His fitness will most likely be assessed by the PCB during the pre-tour camp, which begins in Lahore next week.”I am yearning to play some matches to test myself,” he said. “Although I have trained [during rehabilitation] and then bowling [in the nets], one can’t aspire to judge both the level of fitness and form if there is no competitive sort of matches.”The injury kept Gul out of the Champions Trophy, Pakistan’s tour of West Indies in July and the series against Zimbabwe in August and September. Pakistan’s performances varied in these months as they first lost their three matches in the Champions Trophy, won the ODI and Twenty20 series against West Indies and Zimbabwe but suffered a shock defeat in the second Test against Zimbabwe to share the series 1-1. Whatever the results, Gul said he was not worried about missing out on cricket because of the surgery.”I’m obviously not worried about the number of matches I missed because of the surgery,” he said. “But it was quite difficult to sit out and watch team-mates playing without me. Fortunately, the injury this time was not as serious as the one I suffered in 2004 when three stress fractures of the back sidelined me from the game for more than a year. At that stage I feared my career was over.”Starting October 14, Pakistan will host South Africa in the UAE for two Tests, five ODIs and two T20s, a tour Gul would be targeting. However, his recovery in the next few weeks will decide if he will be able to regain full fitness or not.”It will be a great Test series because Pakistan have the potential to compete against them,” Gul said. “We may have lost against them earlier this year but our side can win because the conditions will suit us more than we encountered in South Africa. I would love to play against them, but it all depends how it all goes for me in the coming weeks.”

Bowlers help England get even

England’s bowlers orchestrated two mini-collapses – one at the start and one in the middle-overs – to secure victory over Australia in the second ODI at Hove and draw level in the Ashes. Jess Cameron tried her best to keep Australia in the lead, but her lone stand of 81 was in vain.England’s defence of a 257-run target was near perfect as they dismissed Meg Lanning and Rachel Haynes for nought each. Cameron, coming in at No. 3, held one end steady and her 63-run partnership with Jodie Fields looked to put Australia back on the right track, but a spell of three wickets in five overs, beginning in the 29th with Jenny Gunn’s sharp return catch to remove Alex Blackwell, brought England back into the ascendancy.Jess Jonassen herded the tail during a run-a-ball 34 but she ran out of partners and Australia were bundled out in the 49th over. Seamer Kathrine Brunt and left-arm spinner Holly Colvin picked up two wickets each for England.Having won the toss, England put in a solid batting performance led by Charlotte Edwards, who scored her second fifty of the series, this time a match-winning effort.A 70-run stand between Edwards and Sarah Taylor was followed by a 77-run fourth-wicket partnership between Lydia Greenway and Arran Brindle that laid the foundation for the charge at the death as England made 41 runs off the last five overs. Left-arm spinner Jonassen continued her form with the ball, picking up 2 for 29 to go with the four wickets she took in the first game. Both teams have four points each heading into the third ODI on Sunday.
