Forest surely regret Ahmedhodzic exit

Nottingham Forest’s decision to let Anel Ahmedhodzic leave the City Ground back in 2019 could well go down as one of the biggest howlers the club has made in recent times.

Ahmedhodzic was a product of Swedish outfit Malmo FF and left the side to join Nottingham Forest’s U18s. The Bosnian with Swedish citizenship worked his way up to the Forest senior side, where he made one first-team appearance as a substitute against Newcastle United, before rejoining Malmo FF – this time as a first-team player.

After a six-month loan spell to Danish outfit Hobro IK, Ahmedhodzic was recalled and became a big part of the squad after signing a new three-year deal, with the side becoming league champions just seven months after he returned from his loan spell.

The following year was the antithesis of his spell at Forest and saw the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Atalanta very much interested in signing the then 22-year-old. The latter, Atalanta, were on the verge of signing Ahmedhodzic in March of 2021, though he stayed with Malmo and made his Champions League debut just five months later against Juventus.

Fast forward to the present day and Ahmedhodzic finds himself on loan at Ligue 1 outfit Bordeaux, having established himself as a starter since joining in January.

Bordeaux have an option to buy the 6 foot 4 centre-back for just €4m (£3.3m) which is a bargain, considering his market value has elevated to £6.3m, according to Transfermarkt.

At 23-years-old his potential is limitless, though if you were to take a look at his stats, they would suggest he is a box-to-box midfielder.

They are peculiar to say the least, but nevertheless impressive. As a centre-back, it is very rare to achieve a shot-creating actions average of one SCA per 90 minutes. Though that suggests everything you need to know about Ahmedhodzic and the system that he operates in.

The Bosnia international plays in a back three and functions as an overlapping centre-back, with his ability in possession a key enabler in his desire to progress up the pitch.

He’s been described by Fabrizio Romano as a “top talent” and it is easy to see why.

If Ahmedhodzic keeps up this trajectory, he will have Nottingham Forest deeply regretting their decision to sell him after he was afforded just one appearance.

Dominant Warriors look for third win

Both teams have created chances; however, while Warriors have found someone to finish the job, Central Districts have allowed their opposition to get out of tight spots

It has been a case of what-if for Central Districts so far in the Champions League. In their opening game, they had Chennai Super Kings in trouble at 40 for 3 in the ninth over, but lost the advantage on a Durban pitch that assisted the bowlers. In their second game, they had Victoria needing 66 from 39 balls after David Hussey departed, but were blown away by Aaron Finch. This after Central Districts captain Jamie How had inspired his side from 3 for 2 to 165 for 5.Contrast this with Warriors who were in a similar situation in their last game, also against Victoria. Hussey had been dismissed with 65 needed from 36 balls. Rusty Theron then snuffed out three wickets in the space of eight deliveries as Warriors sealed the match ruthlessly. That has been the difference between the two sides ahead of their Port Elizabeth clash. Both teams have created chances; however, while Warriors have found someone to finish the job, Central Districts have allowed their opposition to get out of tight spots. How has found little support with the bat, while Davey Jacobs, the Warriors’ captain, has the comfort of having someone with Mark Boucher’s class to shore up the middle order. Central Districts’ most penetrative bowler has been Doug Bracewell, who has gone at nearly eight an over for his three wickets, while Theron has taken six wickets at an economy rate of 5.62 runs.Given the gulf in current form between the two sides, it is hard to see Central Districts troubling the Warriors too much as the home team look to seal a semi-final berth.TeamsWarriors should go in with the same combination that has won them their first two games comfortably.
Warriors (probable) – 1 Davey Jacobs (capt), 2 Ashwell Prince, 3 Colin Ingram, 4 Justin Kreusch, 5 Mark Boucher, 6 Johan Botha, 7 Craig Thyssen, 8 Nicky Boje, 9 Rusty Theron, 10 Makhaya Ntini, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe.Central Districts were forced to make changes to their combination against Victoria and will hope to have their first-choice players back in the fray. They have tried out 14 players so far, with only Ben Wheeler – who has played all of two first-class matches – yet to get a game.Central Districts (probable) – 1 Peter Ingram, 2 Jamie How (capt), 3 George Worker, 4 Mathew Sinclair, 5 Bevan Griggs/Tim Weston (wk), 6 Kieran Noema-Barnett, 7 Brendon Diamanti, 8 Doug Bracewell, 9 Adam Milne, 10 Mitchell McClenaghan/Seth Rance, 11 Michael MasonWatch out for…Peter Ingram has lasted eleven deliveries in the tournament, made six runs, and survived a dropped catch. His twin failures have only increased the pressure on his opening partner How, and there can be no better time than this do-or-die clash for an Ingram knock that would make his idol, Virender Sehwag, proud.
Ashwell Prince has done marginally better than Ingram, but he looked scratchy against Victoria and was involved in the run-out of the blazing Jacobs. While Prince is not known to blaze away, a Twenty20 strike-rate of 106.80 from 22 innings does not do justice to a player of his class.Key contestsHow v Theron: A good start from How is crucial to Central Districts’ batting fortunes, as was evident against Victoria. Theron has been outstanding with the ball for Warriors, snaring two wickets in the opening over against Wayamba and then running through Victoria’s middle order.Stats and Trivia Johan Botha has taken the most wickets, 54, among the 13 bowlers who have economy rates of under six runs an over in T20s.
Mark Boucher, who holds the Test record for most dismissals by a wicketkeeper, stands joint-tenth on the list for T20s with 47 dismissals.Quotes”We set ourselves a target of being one of the best franchises in the world by 2011 and we’ve got the opportunity now.”

“We proved we can compete with the best sides in the world. We will concentrate on getting over the line in the next two matches.”

Journalist makes big Carter-Vickers claim

A major Tottenham Hotspur exit development has now come to light in the last 24 hours, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Spurs exodus looming?

There have been many Lilywhites players linked with a move away from north London in recent weeks, including some pretty big names.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Perhaps the most notable is club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele with the Lyon loanee no longer in manager Antonio Conte’s plans going forward.

The Evening Standard claim that Tottenham are now open to selling the 25-year-old with defender Joe Rodon now also set to be sold alongside Ndombele, per Football Insider.

USA international Cameron Carter-Vickers, currently on a temporary spell at Celtic, is another Spurs player linked with a permanent summer exit with SBI Soccer reporter Larry Henry Jr now sharing a major development.

The Latest: Carter-Vickers development…

As per the American journalist, sharing news from one of his close sources, the Hoops are now in advanced talks to sign Carter-Vickers permanently from Spurs.

He explained (via Twitter):

“Celtic is in advanced talks to acquire USMNT and Tottenham defender Cameron Carter-Vickers, a source confirmed. Celtic remains “very happy” with CCV, but still will need to fight off competition from English clubs.”

The Verdict: Get it completed…

Offloading Carter-Vickers for a small profit margin is arguably imperative given Conte’s lofty summer transfer ambitions, with as many as six major signings reportedly on his agenda (The Telegraph).

The 24-year-old, a mainstay under Ange Postecoglou over 2021/2022, has barely been given a look-in down south for Tottenham and now is the perfect time to let him leave and further his career.

Once called a ‘beast’ by Spurs fan favourite Jan Vertonghen, it appears Carter-Vickers will have to take up that mantle elsewhere – likely at Parkhead and away from the Premier League.

Villa: Dean Jones drops Coutinho update

Transfer insider Dean Jones has dropped a fresh update on Aston Villa’s permanent pursuit to sign Philippe Coutinho.

The Lowdown: Coutinho at Villa

Steven Gerrard made the former Liverpool star his first signing as Villa manager, with the Brazilian joining on loan from Barcelona. The 29-year-old has gone on to impress back in England, contributing to seven goals in 11 appearances.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-developments/” title=”Aston Villa latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Villa managed to negotiate an option to buy Coutinho at the end of the season, believed to be in the region of £34m, but Johan Lange and co have seemingly asked the Europa League quarter-finalists if they can help further with a full-time switch.

The Latest: Jones’ comments on Coutinho

Talking to The Transfer Tavern, Jones claimed that Villa have ‘asked’ Barcelona if they could do ‘something’ when it comes to Coutinho’s final year under contract at the Nou Camp. The journalist stated:

“From what I understand, they’ve asked Barcelona about doing something over the last year of his deal there.”

The Verdict: Interesting…

Barcelona appear to be desperate to offload Coutinho for good and would reportedly be willing to accept a lower fee than the £34m figure upon which the clubs agreed in January.

Villa may well be aware of that, and with Coutinho on £480,000 per week at the Nou Camp, the Midlands club may well be asking Barcelona to release the playmaker from the final 12 months of his deal or lower a fee massively in order for Villa to finance a full-time move for him.

Newcastle have also been linked with his services recently, so there could be more twists and turns when it comes to Coutinho’s long-term future ahead of the summer transfer window.

Jones and van Jaarsveld make Essex pay

Injuries to Ravi Bopara and Maurice Chambers gave Kent a slightly unfair advantage on the opening day in Canterbury where the hosts closed on 360 for 6

Injuries to Ravi Bopara and Maurice Chambers gave Kent a slightly unfair advantage on the opening day in Canterbury where the hosts closed on 360 for 6.A fourth-wicket stand of 176 in 41 overs helped Kent recover from a sticky start and the loss of their captain Rob Key in only the eighth over, by which time Bopara had already limped off clutching his back only to be followed soon after by Chambers who succumbed to a side strain.Having elected to bat first after winning the toss, Key, playing his first game since fracturing a little finger at The Rose Bowl three weeks ago, got off to a positive start with boundaries in each of the opening two overs. But with his score on 13 Key turned one off his pads from Chambers only to see Jaik Mickleburgh pocket a reflex catch at forward short leg that made it 26 for 1.Kent promoted Sam Notheast to bat at No. 3, the berth occupied hitherto this year and last by Jones, and the youngster responded with four stylish boundaries in a cameo 25 before tossing away his wicket to Essex debutant Bryce McGain.Advancing down the wicket to drive, Northeast failed to get to the pitch of it and simply lofted a catch to long off where substitute fielder Grant Flower took a fine running catch. Three overs after lunch Australian leg-spinner McGain, a 38-year-old one-Test wonder, accounted for Joe Denly by finding a thin outside edge through to James Foster. With both Bopara and Chambers out of action, experienced fourth-wicket partners Jones and van Jaarsveld took advantage by posting Kent’s second best stand of the Championship campaign over the best part of three hours. Van Jaarsveld, suffering his worst season since joining Kent from Northamptonshire in 2005, went on to post his first championship hundred of the campaign from 148-balls and with 13 fours and a six.He celebrated with another boundary of McGain, but the wrist spinner then enticed the South African to miscue an attempted on-drive to mid- off where former Kent player David Masters took a comfortable catch.Geraint Jones was a single shy of his second hundred of the summer when he too, needlessly got out to McGain. Looking to loft over the bowler’s head, Jones mistimed to mid-on to end his 155-ball stay on a disappointing note. McGain finished his 30 overs for the day with figures of 4 for 135.With two of their bowling department out of action and undergoing treatment, Essex delayed taking the second new ball for 10 overs, but it finally did the trick in the penultimate over of the day. Having garnered an attractive 34 from 65 balls Darren Stevens aimed an ambitious drive ‘on the up’ only to edge to Tim Phillips at second slip and give Masters his first wicket of the match.

Gloucester sneak home in the rain

Gloucestershire went joint-top of the Clydesdale Bank 40 Group B when they narrowly defeated Derbyshire in a rain-affected match under the County Ground floodlights

21-Jul-2010Gloucestershire went joint-top of the Clydesdale Bank 40 Group B when they narrowly defeated Derbyshire in a rain-affected match under the County Ground floodlights. They squeezed home by one run on the Duckworth-Lewis method after they were set a revised target of 175 in 31 overs. They had been chasing Derbyshire’s 225 for 8, which included 65 from 56 balls from Wayne Madsen, and the contest was in the balance when the umpires took the players off the field for the last time with the visitors 152 for 5, one ahead of the par score.Until Madsen broke free, Derbyshire had found it difficult to get the ball away on a sluggish surface after Anthony Ireland had removed Chesney Hughes and Robin Peterson with lifting balls in the first eight overs. Chris Rogers and Wes Durston began the rebuilding process by adding 64 in 15 overs but their progress stalled when they both fell to Richard Dawson in the space of four balls.Durston holed out to deep square leg and Rogers, who faced 46 balls before hitting a boundary, was lbw for 40 trying to switch-hit. At 100 for 4 in the 23rd over, Derbyshire were precariously perched but Madsen found the right mix of invention and orthodoxy to make sure his team set a testing target. Greg Smith shared a stand of 67 in 11 overs and, after Steffan Jones had driven Steve Kirby back over his head for six, Garry Park and Madsen added 38 in four overs.Gloucestershire made a steady start and although Will Porterfield hit the first three balls from Smith for four, the scoring rate dipped when the spinners came on. Peterson and Jake Needham built up pressure that paid off when Porterfield drove Peterson to long on and was well caught low down by Tim Groenewald for 38 from 49 balls.Alex Gidman found it increasingly hard to time the ball and, after taking 70 balls to score 45, he chipped Needham to midwicket before rain held up play with the visitors 103 for 2 from 22 overs. When the match resumed, the Gladiators were left to score 72 from nine overs and Franklin and Hamish Marshall kept up with the required rate before Jones deceived Marshall with a slower ball that he lobbed to square leg.The Falcons were right back in it when Franklin drove Groenewald to cover in the next over and although Chris Dent drove Smith for four, he drilled Park to long off with 25 needed off 16 balls. It was now raining heavily and after Chris Taylor drove the next ball to deep cover for two, umpires Richard Kettleborough and Trevor Jesty decided the rain was too heavy for play to continue with the Gladiators one in front of the Duckworth-Lewis par score of 151.
