Paul Collingwood has replaced Phil Mustard as Durham captain as the county try to pull around a season that sees them threatened with relegation from Division One of County Championship.

Paul Collingwood has been appointed as captain of Durham’s County Championship side as the club seek to reverse a disappointing start to the season which has seen them fail to win any of their first eight games.Collingwood, who led England to the World T20 title in 2010, replaces Phil Mustard, who was appointed in May 2010 after Will Smith was removed as captain in similar circumstances. Dale Benkenstein remains Durham captain in the limited-overs formats.Durham’s head coach Geoff Cook said: “We’re delighted that Paul has agreed to take on the captaincy and lead the side in the four-day competition. Paul’s international experience is an excellent asset to the team, at a time when we need to be delivering our best results.”We are grateful for Phil Mustard’s efforts as captain and he remains an integral part of the team as a key contributor behind the stumps and with the bat.”Whether a change of captaincy will arrest the decline of an ageing squad remains to be seen. Aged 36 and with a top score of 50 in 12 championship innings this season, Collingwood is probably not a long-term solution.Collingwood’s first game in charge will be next week, when Durham travel to New Road to take on Worcestershire, the only other side in the top division without a win in the championship this season.Collingwood said: “I’m excited to have the opportunity to use my experience to help us progress in the LV= County Championship and get us back to winning ways.”Durham had been touted as championship challengers, but a side that has grown old together has been bereft of top-order runs and two former England fast bowlers, Steve Harmison and Liam Plunkett, have been conspicuous by their absence.Mustard took over little more than two years ago when another poor start caused Durham to sack Smith after a heavy defeat at Trent Bridge. The decision was officially one of “mutual consent,” but Smith was persuaded that he had lost the trust of senior personnel on a coach journey back from the game.Now Mustard, who was regarded as the player to restore harmony, has failed to address the championship slide of a county for which successive championships of 2008 and 2009 are now a distant memory.

Mohammad Isam25-May-2012Subrata Roy, the chairman of the Sahara group that sponsors India’s men’s and women’s cricket teams, has said that he is interested in sponsoring Bangladesh cricket.Speaking at an event in Dhaka, he said that it ‘may be possible’ for Sahara to sponsor the Bangladesh team. “The Sahara logo is seen on the jerseys of Indian cricket team,” he said. “Though I am not announcing it right now, but I can say it may be possible to see the same logo on the jersey of Bangladesh cricket team.”Last month, the BCB had announced a request for quotation for the sponsorship rights for the national team. The board, however, couldn’t confirm any official approach from the Sahara group.In February, Sahara and the BCCI’s relationship went through a rough patch, with the group saying it was withdrawing sponsorship of the India team and selling their IPL franchise, Pune Warriors. However, after two weeks of negotiations, the two parties patched up, and Sahara is currently serving its third consecutive term as India’s sponsors. The last times the rights were open to bidding, in May 2010, Sahara outbid Bharti Airtel, offering Rs 3.34 [US$593,000 approx] crore per match.Apart from India’s senior cricket teams, Sahara also sponsors the country’s field hockey men’s and women’s teams, and was co-sponsor of the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in Delhi.

Simon Katich has announced his retirement from first-class cricket in Australia, ending a Sheffield Shield career that spanned 16 seasons for Western Australia and New South Wales.Katich, 36, will play on for Hampshire this year and his decision leaves the door open to continue his county career if he chooses to do so next year. He has also committed to playing for the Perth Scorchers in the Champions League Twenty20 later this year but said in a statement that with a young family and a desire for extended time at home, he had decided to reassess his priorities.Just over 12 months ago, Katich was considered an important member of the Test side but he was the primary victim of a move for change following the 2010-11 Ashes debacle. Katich lost his Cricket Australia contract last year and with it any realistic chance of adding to his 56 Tests, especially after he lashed out at the way Australian cricket was run during a frank press conference.His replacement at the top of the order, Phillip Hughes, was unable to hold his place but Katich was not called on again, and the Australians are now using a David Warner-Ed Cowan opening partnership in Test cricket. Katich will leave the game having scored 4188 Test runs at 45.03, while he can still add to his first-class tally of 19,667 runs this county season.A long-time captain of New South Wales after moving from Western Australia, Katich lost the state leadership last summer as the Blues looked to blood younger leaders. However, he kept scoring runs for New South Wales and made 483 at 43.90 in the Sheffield Shield last season.

أكد أحمد القندوسي، لاعب النادي الأهلي، أن تحقيق الفوز على المقاولون العرب كان مهما للفريق قبل السفر لمواجهة صن داونز بدوري أبطال إفريقيا.

وفاز الأهلي على المقاولون العرب بهدفين مقابل هدف في المباراة التي جمعت الفريقين، على ملعب الأهلي وي السلام، في المباراة المؤجلة من الجولة الـ 17 من عمر المسابقة الأكبر محليًا.

وقال القندوسي في تصريحات تلفزيونية عبر فضائية “أون تايم سبورتس”: “الحمد لله أنا في فريق كبير، وفزنا اليوم سيجعلنا نُسافر بمعنويات كبيرة لمواجهة صن داونز”.

وتابع: “مباراة كانت صعبة، كنا نريد حصد الثلاث نقاط لكي نبتعد بفارق النقاط في الدوري قبل السفر”.

وأضاف: “مارسيل كولر المدير الفني، يعطيني الثقة وإن شاء الله أصنع الفارق وأكون على قدر الثقة التي منحني إياها”.

وأكد: “كل اللاعبين إخواني واستقبلوني وكأني لاعب قديم معهم، وأشكر الجماهير التي دعمتنا اليوم، ونحتاجكم في المباراة القادمة”.

Fans in Sri Lanka may still be coming to terms with the narrow defeat in the CB series finals, those in India may still be coming to terms with the retirement of one of their greatest batsmen, but for fans in Bangladesh, the Asia Cup can’t start soon enough. Tickets went on sale four days ago, and the response has been hearteningly enthusiastic.Another sign of the fervour for the tournament was in evidence at Shakib Al Hasan’s press conference today. It was a routine pre-match media interaction, but a horde of around 70 reporters, photographers and cameramen, a large proportion being locals, filled out the press conference hall at the Shere Bangla stadium.The zeal for cricket remains high though it has been a dispiriting 12 months for Bangladesh cricket, with many reverses after the high hopes going into the 2011 World Cup. Shakib was bullish about Bangladesh’s chances in the Asia Cup. “Our target? To be the champions,” he said. “We want to play our best cricket, though we are not able to do it all the time. It is possible at home. This tournament is a good place for us to know where we stand in world cricket at the moment.”There hasn’t been any international cricket in Bangladesh for three months, but Shakib felt the Bangladesh Premier League had made them ready for the Asia Cup. “We had very good preparation, not as a team, but in domestic competitions. If we play to our potential, I’m hopeful we can do well.”Bangladesh were swept aside by Pakistan in the one-dayers three months ago. Their only victory over Pakistan remains the famous one in the 1999 World Cup. “We haven’t won against Pakistan for a long time but in the last series we had a good chance in the third ODI,” Shakib said. “We did well in the second Test. This is an opportunity to prove ourselves.”Pakistan’s success in that series, and over the past year, has been built on their troika of tweakers – Mohammad Hafeez, Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi. “Their three spinners will be a challenge for our batsmen,” Shakib said. “If we can put up a reasonable total, our bowling can hold the opposition.”Besides strong opponents, Bangladesh have to deal with plenty of off-field issues as well. The naming of their captain for the Asia Cup was delayed by a day, prompting speculation that perhaps Mushfiqur Rahim would be punished for his disparaging remarks about the BPL. The drama over the exclusion of one their best batsmen, Tamim Iqbal, lasted several days, revealing a dispute between the chief selector and the board president that has now been resolved, at least temporarily, after the prime minister’s intervention.Hasn’t all this affected the team’s focus? Shakib vehemently denied it. “We have not discussed the issues in the dressing room so it won’t distract us in any way with regards to our preparation in this tournament.”Bangladeshi fans retain a craving for cricket despite the regular defeats and the many controversies. Dia de festa em dobro para o Bragantino. Em data de comemorações pelos 28 anos da conquista do Paulistão de 1990, a equipe teve mais um motivo para festejar: a classificação para a Série B do Campeonato Brasileiro em 2019. Depois de vencer o Náutico por 3 a 1 no primeiro confronto das quartas de final, o Alvinegro precisou apenas do empate em 1 a 1 deste domingo para assegurar a vaga diante de um grande público na Arena de Pernambuco. Se a festa é grande de um lado, por outro, o Náutico vai continuar amargando com a permanência na terceira divisão.

Apesar de já estar classificado para a segunda divisão, o Bragantino ainda tem mais jogos a disputar pela Série C e encara o Operário-PR pelas semifinais. Dependendo de uma série de gols para continuar na briga pela classificação, o Náutico entrou em campo mostrando um jogo ofensivo, mas pagou caro pelo desperdício de chances. Logo aos quatro minutos, Assis protagonizou a primeira falha e foi seguido por Josa, Camutanga, Ortigoza e Dudu, que mandou uma bomba na direção de Alex Alves e não abriu o placar por um fio. Do outro lado, sem muito o que temer, o Bragantino marcou seu único gol do jogo a partir de erro da defesa do rival, um vacilo bem aproveitado por Matheus Peixoto, que deu um lindo cabeceio aos 32 minutos.

Vendo a vaga cada vez mais distante, o técnico Márcio Goiano sacou o volante Josa para a entrada do meia Wallace Pernambucano, mas o predominante nervosismo acabou afetando o time, que teve sua última chance em cabeceio de Sueliton para fora. Apesar do primeiro tempo ruim, o Timbu saiu de campo aplaudido pelos torcedores alvirrubros.

Um pouco mais concentrado, o Náutico voltou com outra postura para o segundo tempo. O time até conseguiu realizar boas jogadas, mas novamente foi prejudicado pelos erros nas finalizações, tendo sua melhor oportunidade aos 22 minutos, quando Adenilson tocou o braço na bola dentro da grande área e garantiu pênalti para o Náutico. Na cobrança, Wallace Pernambucano não foi páreo para Alex Alves, mas ainda conseguiu se redimir marcando o gol de empate aos 38 minutos. Porém, já era tarde para o resultado ser modificado.

Sem mais jogos oficiais para disputar em 2018, o Náutico entra em um longo período de férias mirando o início do Estadual, competição para a qual o time deve começar a se preparar em dezembro.
