Man City, Real Madrid & the 20 richest clubs in the world in 2023 – full list revealed

GOAL takes a look at the top 20 highest revenue-generating clubs in the world which includes a record 11 Premier League sides.

Manchester City have been named the highest revenue-generating club in the Deloitte Money League for the second successive time in 2023.

La Liga giants Real Madrid occupy second spot ahead of Premier League sides Liverpool and Manchester United with Paris Saint-Germain making up the top five. The Reds were the biggest movers as they leapt into third place after being seventh just a year ago, overtaking great rivals Manchester United for the first time.

Current Premier League leaders, Arsenal, make it into the top 10, primarily by virtue of generating significant matchday revenues, but remain behind familiar rivals Chelsea and Tottenham who are eighth and ninth respectively.

In contrast to Liverpool, Barcelona tanked from fourth to seventh with a sharp decline in broadcast revenues as they competed in the UEFA Europa League in 2021-22. Bayern Munich find themselves a rung ahead of the Catalan giants which completes the top 10.

The Magpies are also a new entry on the list after they saw a 25 per cent increase in year-on-year revenue.

They have earned more in all three revenue segments with matchday (€33m) and commercial earnings leading the way.

Everton is the second Premier League club to post negative growth after Leicester City as their revenue fell from €218.1m to €213.7m.

Their broadcast revenue fell by €29m in the absence of any continental participation in 2021-22 and their mediocre showing in the Premier League further complicated matters.

Everton's wage/expense ratio stands at 96 per cent and needs immediate attention.

Leeds have improved significantly on their commercial revenue which has helped them post an increase of 17 per cent growth in total earnings.

Managing to stay afloat in the Premier League ensured that they continued to have a steady inflow of returns from television rights. Their matchday earnings also reached a record high of €28m which ensured a spot in the top 20 list.

Leicester City are one of the two Premier League clubs on this list who have seen a decline in revenue. From €255.5m it went down marginally to €252.2m in the 2021-22 season.

The Foxes' broadcast revenue took a hit by more than €30m, primarily because they were plying their trade in the Europa Conference League. However, earnings from other sources helped the club significantly make up for the loss.

Brazil player ratings vs Colombia: Where have the goals gone?! Neymar-less Selecao look toothless as Vinicius Jr injury compounds misery in defeat to Luis Diaz and Co

Fernando Diniz's side couldn't generate any attacking momentum as a Luis Diaz double saw them drop points yet again

Brazil struggled without the creativity of Neymar, and were lost when Vinicius Jr went off injured, as they let a 1-0 lead slip against Colombia. Gabriel Martinelli's early goal was the Selecao's only real chance of the night, with Luis Diaz bagging twice in four minutes late on to give his side a 2-1 win.

The Arsenal winger opened the scoring inside five minutes, poking an effort into the far corner after a fine piece of interplay with Vinicius. The Selecao's momentum was slowed, though, by Vinicius' exit, after the winger appeared to pick up a thigh issue that forced him off after 26 minutes.

The home side eventually turned things around. Diaz was at the center of it all, nodding home two headers in a four-minute stretch to put his side up 2-1. Brazil, for their part, never carved out a clear chance. Raphinha and Rodrygo put shots narrowly wide, but Fernando Diniz's men struggled to create and they were made to pay, dropping points in Conmebol qualifying for the third-straight contest.

GOAL rates Brazil's players from Estadio Metropolitano…

GettyGoalkeeper & Defence

Alisson (8/10):

Made numerous important saves in Ederson's absence. Couldn't do anything about Diaz's goals. Could have been 4-1 without him.

Emerson (5/10):

Given a rough evening by Diaz, and didn't offer loads on the ball either.

Marquinhos (5/10):

Outlept by Diaz for the Colombia second, and a bit shaky on the ball. Not his best night.

Gabriel (6/10):

Did all of the defensive stuff well, and was the most composed of the Selecao's centre-backs.

Renan Lodi (4/10):

Lacked legs at right-back, and was off the pace for most of proceedings. He's a real weak point.

AdvertisementGettyMidfield

Andre (6/10):

Some of his defensive work was excellent. Made a vital block on Diaz in the first half, and put some timely tackles in.

Bruno Guimaraes (5/10):

A mixed showing. Carried the ball well at times, but didn't cover enough ground in the middle of the park.

Rodrygo (5/10):

Really bright at times. He linked play effectively, and looked to go for goal. But he wasn't clinical or incisive enough. Will have to step up now.

GettyAttack

Vinicius Jr (6/10):

Assisted the opener, and was at his spellbinding best for 25 minutes. Then left the game with a leg injury – a worry for Real Madrid.

Gabriel Martinelli (7/10):

Took his goal well, and was a constant threat on the wing. You'd think there will be many more Brazil goals to come.

Raphinha (4/10):

Fired narrowly wide in the second half. Not really involved, otherwise.

Joao Pedro (5/10):

Offered legs but not much quality up front.

Paulinho (5/10):

Didn't offer much in an attacking sense.

Douglas Luiz (5/10):

Couldn't establish midfield control.

Pepe (N/A):

Not enough time to make an impact.

Endrick (N/A):

Not much time to make an impact. An underwhelming debut.

Fernando Diniz (3/10):

Played four wingers and only two natural centre-mids in a hostile environment. His side never found a foothold, and were too often hit on the break. Brazil shouldn't be this easy to play against.

WAPDA, after being inserted, rode on the pair’s fourth-wicket stand to compile 264. Naved stroked six fours and three sixes during his 100, while Raees’ 81 featured six fours and one six. For Stallions, Hasan Ali and Bilal Asif claimed four wickets apiece. Stallions never really got going in their chase, as only three batsmen managed double-digit scores. They were steady at 67 for 1, but lost their last nine wickets for just 59 runs to fold for 126. Waqas Maqsood was the pick of WAPDA’s bowlers, collecting 3 for 33.An unbeaten 58 from Nasir Khan helped Abbottabad Falcons gun down 257 against Habib Bank Limited with four wickets and two balls to spare. Falcons lost Rameez Ahmed early in the chase, but their top and middle order all chipped in with handy knocks. Khalilullah (42) and Sohail Akhtar (45) made forties, before Nasir’s 41-ball half-century took the team home. Earlier, Habib Bank, after being inserted, made 256 for 7 from their 50 overs. Their innings was powered by a 55-ball 59 from Hasan Raza, and his 61-run association for the seventh wicket with Humayun Farhat.Group IIINaseer Akram and Mohammad Zubair snared three scalps apiece to bundle Pakistan Television out for 84 and set Faisalabad Wolves on course for a comfortable seven-wicket victory at the Iqbal Stadium in a game that was reduced to 20 overs per side. PTV, having been inserted, failed to build any momentum. Usman Ashraf was the team’s highest run-getter with 26, but only two other players managed to reach double digits, with only five boundaries seen throughout the innings. Wolves made light work of the chase, as Hasan Mahmood’s 31-ball 37 guided the team home in 14.4 overs.Abdul Rehman Muzammil and Shahzad Ali both stroked crucial fifties, helping Multan Tigers hunt down 208 against Sui Southern Gas Corporation. Tigers were precariously placed at 54 for 3 before a 91-run partnership for the fifth wicket put them back on track. Muzammil’s 50 featured six fours, while Shahzad hit five fours during his 53. Both batsmen couldn’t see the chase through, but Kashif Naved’s 39-ball 43 sealed the chase with nine deliveries to spare. Earlier, tight spells from Sadaif Mehdi (3 for 38), Majid Ali (2 for 36) and Kashif (2 for 17) restricted SSGC to 207. From a healthy 133 for 4, the team lost their last six wickets for just 74 runs, as no batsman could muscle a much-needed half-century.

Zimbabwe offspinner Prosper Utseya has been banned from bowling in international cricket after his action was found to exceed the ICC’s 15-degree limit

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Oct-2014Zimbabwe offspinner Prosper Utseya has been banned from bowling in international cricket after his action was found to exceed the ICC’s 15-degree limit. Utseya was tested at an accredited facility in Cardiff and all of his deliveries were deemed illegal.Utseya must now undergo remedial work on his action and apply for retesting. A Zimbabwe Cricket release said they were looking for “relevant technical expertise to work with Utseya to modify his action in the shortest possible time, after which an application will be made to the ICC for his re-assessment.”Utseya can resume bowling in international cricket only after remedied action is cleared, but can play at domestic level at the Zimbabwe Cricket’s discretion.Utseya was reported by the ICC’s match officials following the third ODI against South Africa in Bulawayo in August. The ICC umpires have been strict with identifying illegal actions in recent months and bans have been handed out to Pakistan’s Saeed Ajmal and Sri Lanka’s Sachithra Senanayake among others, after both were found guilty of breaking the 15-degree flex rule.A similar drive was undertaken in the recent Champions League T20, during which West Indies spinner Sunil Narine was banned from bowling in the final and other BCCI-organised tournaments like the IPL.

'A good learning curve' – Virgil van Dijk explains how Liverpool are adapting to new Trent Alexander-Arnold role

Despite Trent Alexander-Arnold's hybrid position still being new to Liverpool, Virgil van Dijk has complimented the diversity it brings to the club.

Van Dijk talks about new TAA roleSays Liverpool still adapting TAA in a transitional role for the clubWHAT HAPPENED?

Since April, Jurgen Klopp has altered the set-up of the Liverpool side around the strengths of the Englishman. The 25-year-old has been stepping into midfield when the Reds are in possession, while he drops into his old role when defending. He equalised the scoring at the Etihad on Saturday night in a 1-1 draw with Manchester City by shooting into the bottom corner from the outside of the area.

AdvertisementWHAT VIRGIL VAN DIJK SAID

“It’s about mixing it up," Van Dijk said [via The Athletic]. "We started doing that since April and I think we had a very good run where we did well. We’re still learning, he's still learning, adapting in certain situations. City are very good in that they have that proper plan and we are getting better and better at that as well. It’s a new dimension but still working on it and we can only benefit from it."

“I don’t know that’s for the coaches that work with him," he added. "For the moment he’s playing just fine where he is right now. He has that freedom to mix it up and he has to do that because you see teams are working it out at times so he has to be able to switch from staying on the outside and going on the inside as well."

"It’s a good learning curve for him as well and (on Saturday) he did that well because obviously, he was playing against one of the most in-form wingers (Jeremy Doku) at the moment. So to be important with the goal and also his interceptions is very important."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Alexander-Arnold has played in a more traditional midfield role for England in recent internationals, but Van Dijk has stated that there are no intentions to replicate that at club level for the time being.

Winger nursing muscle complaintRarely misses games at club levelWill not figure for the Three LionsWHAT HAPPENED?

The 22-year-old winger rarely misses a game at club level, with a 1-0 victory against City the first time he has failed to figure in a Premier League fixture for the Gunners since May 2021. Saka is nursing a muscle complaint that was picked up in a Champions League meeting with Lens.

Gareth Southgate selected Saka in his latest England squad in spite of that knock, but the Three Lions boss has been informed that the Arsenal talisman will not be available for games against Australia and Italy. Mikel Arteta said when asked for an update on Saka: "He hasn't trained at all in the last two days. He's not available to play football at the moment."

WHAT THEY SAID

While Saka was ruled out against City, Gabriel Martinelli did make a welcome return to action off the bench. Arteta added on having the Brazilian back, with Leandro Trossard picking up a first-half knock: “He’s been saying for a few weeks ‘I’m going be there against City even though everyone said it would be too soon’. Leo after 30 minutes felt something in his hamstring and he was ready with his kit straight away there. He’s a joy of a boy.”

Rain threat looms as hardened NZ face Australia

Tim Southee won New Zealand a thriller the last time they met Australia in a T20I six years ago, but now, the stakes are almost as high as the altitude as they face off in a crucial encounter in Dharamsala

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale17-Mar-2016Match factsFriday, March 18, 2016
Start time 1500 local (0930 GMT)Big pictureSix years ago, Australia and New Zealand played a highly entertaining T20 match at Lancaster Park in Christchurch. Brendon McCullum blasted a 56-ball 116 and scooped audaciously off Shaun Tait, New Zealand racked up 214, Australia matched them in the chase, and Tim Southee kept things tight in the Super Over to seal a memorable win for the home team. And they haven’t met in a T20 match since.Strange as it seems, February 28, 2010 was the last time these Trans-Tasman neighbours played each other in T20 cricket. Now they finally reconnect in the shortest format and the stakes are almost as high as the altitude. Dharamsala is the venue for Australia’s opening match of this World T20, but New Zealand already have a win on the board against hosts India. Another one here and they will be in prime position to progress to a World T20 semi-final for the first time since 2007.New Zealand’s spin success against India in Nagpur augurs well for their hopes in this tournament. Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi and Nathan McCullum between them picked up nine out of ten wickets against India, and given that Australia can struggle against the turning ball in the short form it may just be advantage New Zealand. A few more runs from the top order would be handy, though – New Zealand were wobbling at 13 for 2 in the second over against India before recovering adequately.Quite what to expect from Australia remains a mystery. Punished at home by India in three T20s, they moved on to South Africa and found some form, but then were outdone by West Indies in a warm-up in Kolkata. They too have three spinners available, including the allrounder Glenn Maxwell, but neither Ashton Agar nor Adam Zampa had played a T20 international three weeks ago. This is a big step up. Australia are preaching “flexibility”, which is admirable, but there is something to be said for stability as well.Form guideAustralia: WWLLL (last five completed matches)
New Zealand: WWWLWWatch out forDavid Warner has made his name as an opener but suddenly has become a floater in Australia’s T20 middle order. The switch worked well in South Africa, where he scored 20, 77 and 33, and although it is possible he could open again in this tournament, with other options such as Aaron Finch, Shane Watson and Usman Khawaja, that seems unlikely.Mitchell Santner’s 4 for 11 against India was the best analysis by a New Zealand spinner in T20 internationals, and there is no reason to think he won’t cause problems for Australia’s batsmen as well. Santner has a certain about him – he just seems like a man for any occasion. And the big occasion hasn’t worried him yet.Team newsThere are so many possible combinations Australia could go with that choosing their final XI feels like something of a lottery, which their selection process has more or less been over the past six games. One question is whether to choose all three spinners, another is whether Usman Khawaja can squeeze into the top order, and another is how many fast men are required with a heavy complement of seaming allrounders.Australia (possible) 1 Aaron Finch, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Steven Smith (capt), 4 David Warner, 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Mitchell Marsh, 7 James Faulkner, 8 Peter Nevill (wk), 9 Ashton Agar/John Hastings/Nathan Coulter-Nile, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh Hazlewood.New Zealand may well be tempted to stick with their winning combination.New Zealand (possible) 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Kane Williamson (capt), 3 Colin Munro, 4 Corey Anderson, 5 Ross Taylor, 6 Mitchell Santner, 7 Grant Elliott, 8 Luke Ronchi (wk), 9 Nathan McCullum, 10 Adam Milne, 11 Ish SodhiPitch and conditionsA new pitch has been prepared, which may not turn as much as that used by the Associates recently, but spin is still expected to play more of a role than pace and bounce. There is some rain expected on Friday as well, which could lead to an abbreviated game.Stats and trivia Australia and New Zealand have met five times in T20s for four wins to Australia; New Zealand’s only victory was in the Super Over in Christchurch in 2010 Australia have played only six T20s in 2016 but have used a remarkable 25 playersQuotes”Yeah, I think you have to have something in mind [for a shortened game]. I don’t think a lot of the game-plans or the way each individual plays changes too much but I think you do have to have a few different game-plans if the game is a bit shorter.”
.”It was definitely a lot of happy team-mates after the game [against India]. But we don’t want to get too carried away. It’s just one game in what is a short and condensed tournament. Lot of games to be played.”

Premadasa to get indoor nets, swimming pool

Sri Lanka Cricket’s interim committee has taken steps to build indoor nets and a swimming pool at the R Premadasa Stadium in Khettarama, where the national side conducts much of its training

Andrew Fidel Fernando28-Apr-2015Sri Lanka Cricket’s interim committee has taken steps to build indoor nets and a swimming pool at the R Premadasa Stadium in Khettarama, where the national side conducts much of its training. Khettarama currently has 18 practice pitches, and also houses Sri Lanka’s Max Cricket Academy, but many of these facilities are out of use during the monsoon months.”We’re thinking we would like to start work on the indoor nets and swimming pool by June,” interim chairman Sidath Wettimuny said. “At the moment we don’t have facilities for cricketers who need to train on rainy days, early in the morning or late at night, so an indoor facility is vital. Modern training methods also demand a swimming pool for rehabilitation exercises.”We also think it is essential to have indoor facilities in Pallekele, Dambulla, Hambantota, and to repair the Galle facilities as well, finance permitting. That’s a priority for us.”The interim committee will also take steps to grant pay-rises to first-class cricketers, Wettimuny said. SLC currently pays a daily wage of around 2500 rupees (approx USD $19), but the committee plans to triple this sum. “The idea is to make cricket a livelihood for these players,” Wettimuny said. The reshaping of Sri Lanka’s domestic cricket structure has also been a focus for the committee, with Mahela Jayawardene among those making recommendations to revive a provincial cricket tournament. Wettimuny said any serious restructuring of the domestic system would require significant consultation with SLC’s member clubs and associations, but was necessary for Sri Lanka to remain competitive at the international level.
